Enclosure connection guidelines

IMPORTANT: Mixing 3Gb and 6Gb devicesmay result in data throughput at the lower 3Gb/srate. For more information, see the HP P2000 G3MSA System Cable Configuration Guide.

• Use only supported SAS 4x cables.

• Mini-SAS to mini-SAS 0.5 m cables are providedwith the P2000, D2700, and MSA70 driveenclosures (one per I/O module).

• SAS to SAS 0.6 m cables are provided with theMSA2000 drive enclosure (one per I/O module).

• Longer cables than those supplied with the enclosuremust be purchased separately. See the MSA QuickSpecs for details.

• The maximum length cable allowed in anyconfiguration is 2 m.

• A maximum of eight (8) enclosures (including thearray enclosure) OR one hundred forty-nine (149)drives are allowed in the array configuration.

Consider the following when cabling HP P2000 G3MSA Systems:• P2000 G3 FC/iSCSI MSA System LUNs may be

presented through either the iSCSI or FC host ports;presenting the same LUN through both protocols isnot supported.

• P2000 G3 MSA System Fibre Channel and iSCSIcontroller ports can both be used for connecting tohosts as well as for replication purposes.

• P2000 G3 10GbE iSCSI MSA Systems mustconnect to 10GbE-enabled devices (server, switch,or interconnect).

P2000 G3 iSCSI MSA connected to four switches/fourserversConnecting a P2000 G3 iSCSI MSA dual-controllerarray enclosure to four switches/four servers in adual-path configuration requires sixteen (16) Ethernetcables.

Step 5. Connect the P2000 G3 MSA Systemto a remote management hostThe remote management host directly manages systemsout-of-band over an Ethernet network. If included in yourenvironment, do the following to connect the P2000 G3MSA System to a remote management host:1. Connect an RJ-45 Ethernet cable to the Ethernet

network management port on each P2000 G3MSASystem controller.

2. Connect the other end of each Ethernet cable to anetwork that your management host can access(preferably on the same subnet).

Step 6. Connect two P2000 G3 MSASystems to replicate volumesIf included in your environment, Remote Snap replicationis a licensed disaster-recovery feature that performsasynchronous (batch) replication of block-level data froma volume on a primary P2000 G3 MSA System to asecondary volume on the same system or on a separate, independent P2000 G3 MSA System. Two associatedmaster volumes form a replication set, with only theprimary volume (source of data) mapped for access bya server. Both systems must be licensed to use replicationand must be connected through switches to the samefabric or network (direct attach is not supported).Cabling configuration possibilities are many, including:• Single-controller — Multiple servers/single

network/two switches• Dual-controller — Multiple servers/different

networks/multiple switches• Dual-controller — Multiple servers/single

network/single switchFor more information about Remote Snap and RemoteSnap cabling requirements and examples, see“Connecting two storage systems to replicate volumes”in the HP P2000 G3 iSCSI MSA System User Guide. After the P2000 G3 MSA Systems are physically cabled, see the HP P2000 G3 MSA System SMU ReferenceGuide or online help for information about configuring, provisioning, and using this optional Remote Snapfeature.

Step 7. Power on the components

IMPORTANT: Important safety information aboutpower cords can be found on the SoftwareSupport/Documentation DVD provided with yourMSA chassis. To locate this information look forthe Safety and Disposal guide located on theDocuments tab.

Power on the enclosures and associated server(s) in theorder documented below.1. Connect the primary power cords from the rack to

separate external power sources. Note that PowerDistribution Unit (PDU) power cords are the onlytype of power cord supplied.

2. Using the provided power cords, plug in eachattached drive enclosure power supply module toone power source in the rack. If needed, power onthe drive enclosures using the power switch on therear of the units. Wait one minute to ensure that alldrives can be recognized by the array controller.

3. Plug in the P2000 G3 MSA array controller. Ifneeded, power on the array controller using thepower switch on the rear of the unit.

4. Power on servers (if they are powered down formaintenance purposes).

Step 8. Update firmwareAfter installing hardware and powering on componentsfor the first time, be sure to verify that the controllermodules, drive modules, and disk drives are running thelatest available firmware.Using the Storage Management Utility (SMU), right-clickthe system in the Configuration View panel and selectTools > Update Firmware. This panel shows the currentlyinstalled firmware versions and enables you to updatethem. To find and download the latest software and firmwareupdate for your product, go to the HP Downloadswebsite at http://www.hp.com/support/downloads.

Step 9. Configure the MSASee the HP P2000 G3 MSA System User Guide, HPP2000 G3 MSA System Reference Guide, and HPP2000 G3 MSA System Cable Configuration Guide forconfiguration and setup information. The latest versionsof these manuals are available at: http://www.hp.com/support/manuals.
