SCM CELEBRATES an edition ofW18 featuring big figures, inter-national attendance, innovativetechnologies and highly spe-cialised training.

The Italian Group, a long-stand-ing, reliable partner for the entirewoodworking industry, has beenone of the main attractions at theevent held at the BirminghamNational Exhibition Centre from 30September to 3 October.

At the exhibition SCM con-firmed once again its leading rolein Italy and in Europe, not only forits widest international range ofshowcased industry-specific tech-nological products, but also for itsability to innovate, opening the way to future scenarios in woodworking.

“Work simple. Work digital” was the concept underlying all SCMcommunication at the exhibition, the leitmotif of all the technologicaland digital innovations that were introduced. W18 visitors were very in-terested by the Maestro Digital Systems platform and, in particular, the in-novative IoT solution of SCM Maestro connect which, in response toIndustry 4.0 requirements, makes the most of the potential of the“Internet of Things” concept to create a system for collecting and

analysing data from SCM ma-chines, able to increasingly moni-tor and optimise productionprocesses, offering on the onehand full control of the productionperformance by the customer and,on the other hand, a number ofmicro-services such as prompt, smart maintenance and optimisedspare part management.

Among the most appreciatedtechnologies, the Morbidelli CNCmachining centres for drilling, routing and edgebanding, the Ac-cord and Balestrini housing range, the Gabbiani S among SCM cut-ting options, Olimpic and Stefaniedgebanders, the Dmc sanding

solutions, joinery machines starting from L’Invincibile and the differentsurface finishing solutions by Superfici.

The attention of SCM’s visitors has been highly focused on edge-banding, CNC routing and drilling technologies, with on the standpurchases of several machines by existing customers, that have made themost of the available choice for a quick upgrade of their productionfacilities. Great interest has also been placed on the Gabbiani S beam sawwith Maestro Optimiser, FlexCut panel handling solution and SawSet

rapid set up device for scoreralignment.

The imposing presence ofElmag Compact 3 spraying solu-tion was not missed either, offer-ing flexibility at an incrediblycompetitive price to medium sizefurniture manufacturers.

On the first day the attendanceof new smaller customers, many ofwhich were from Ireland, wasnoticeable for both classicalmachines and advanced tech-nologies. The following days saw alarge group of existing and newcustomers making the most oftheir local area sales manager, service engineers and Italian pro-duct specialist available on thestand to get in depth presenta-tions and demonstrations of theequipment on show for windows, doors and panel manufacturing.SCM Group UK LtdTel 0115 977 0044www.scmgroup.me.uk

W18 REVIEW: W EXHIBITION & ELEMENTS

THE W18 exhibition proved to be highly successful for J & C O'MearaWoodworking Machinery Ltd. The constant stream of visitors to thestand included both existing customers and new potential cus-tomers, with a significant num-ber of quality enquiries receivedduring the four day show.

The new CNC range from AESproved particularly popular withvisitors. On show was an exampleof the heavy duty, high speednesting machine the AES Extreme1632 with a working area of 3,200mm x 1,600 mm. This machinewas also fitted with the HSD bor-ing unit having 10 drills, a 12-po-sition rotary tool changer andautomatic bed cleaning. TheExtreme series is available withdifferent bed sizes and as a fullyautomated ‘Line’ machine.

On display next to the Extremewas one of the AES Vega Evo ma-chines which is considered ideal for both furniture makers and joinerycompanies alike. This machine is of pod and rail design, has an 8-positionlinear tool changer and has a dedicated double ended horizontal routerhead to allow mortising for door locks and recessing for hinges. Again, the machine comes complete with Alphacam CAD/CAM software alongwith easy to use macros written by AES for easy ‘one off’ programmingfor processing cabinets and doors.

The AES Extreme and Vega CNC machines are designed for optimumprecision, productivity and reliability. All machines come complete withOsai CNC with 17” colour TFT screen and centralised lubrication. All axesare controlled by state of the art servo motors and the machines comewith automatic tool offset. Easy referencing is available with referencepistons, and all machines come equipped with Alphacam CAD/CAM operating software (Alphacam Essential 2D).

The x-axis speed and y-axis speed are both 70 m/min for rapid posi-tioning. The z-axis speed is 20 m/min and the z-axis travel is 200 mm. Therouter motor is 9 kW (12 hp) and the router speed is 24,000 rpm maxi-mum. Options include increased vacuum; rotary tool changer;auto la-belling system with alignment; aggregate heads; and C axis head.

“We knew the AES products would be well received but were still verysurprised by the level of interest. On hand, we had technical representativesfrom AES along with our Software and Applications Engineer to discuss cus-tomer requirements. We believe there is quite a gap in the market whereAES fit perfectly,” said Carl O'Meara, managing director of J & C O'Meara.

The established Genisis machines also attracted attention. As always, the panel saw range proved popular, especially the Genisis XC compactmachine which has a sliding table length of 1,900 mm, offers saw bladetilt of 45°, a cutting width of 1,000 mm, a powerful 7.5 Hp motor and amaximum saw diameter of 400 mm. The raise and lower of the blade ismotorised and this machine is also available as a full size panel saw with3,200 mm sliding table and 1,300 mm rip.

Next to the Genisis XC was an example of the Genisis X2 which is aheavy-duty full-size machine having all motorised movements to themain blade and scorer and fitted with the optional digital displays to both

cross cut fence and rip fence. Thismachine was also equipped withthe control panel mounted at eyelevel and additional start/stop onthe end of the sliding table.

“The sliding table panel sawhas always been one of our best-selling machines with around 150installations of the Genisis ma-chines throughout the UK. Themachines are constructed to givelong term accuracy and durabilityeven in the busiest of workshops,”said Carl O'Meara.

Also popular and on display wasan example of the traditional stylebriquette machine. “We introducedthis series of briquetting machinesover 10 years ago and have many

installations throughout the UK,” Carl told PW&SS. “There are 15 models inthe range and from our experience, we can offer good sound advice to en-sure the correct model is supplied for the correct application. Briquetterscan be considered an essential for any workshop looking to manage thevolume of its wood waste. They convert what is otherwise a waste productinto a useable product reducing heating costs as well as landfill costs andcan of course provide the source for an additional income.”

Installations have included a number of machines which have beensited directly below dust extraction units hence eliminating the handlingof the waste. Other installations have included shopfit companies whowere looking to compact MDF dust, recycling companies processingpaper, cardboard as well as shavings and even a shoe maker who wantedto compact leather dust. All the machines are equipped with a Siemenscolour touch screen and have sensor in the hopper to allow the machinesto work in automatic mode.

“The briquette machines have always been a steady selling machineand as with all machines, it is important to match the correct machine tothe correct application. A number of points to consider include volumeof waste being produced, the type of material to be processed, how thewaste will be introduced into a machine and how the briquettes will beused,” said Carl.

Summing up, Carl added, “The W18 exhibition was by far our busiestexhibition to date. We took orders at the show and have sold machinessince the show. The level of interest and amount of enquiries have far sur-passed any expectations and have been far greater than any other show.”J & C O'Meara Woodworking Machinery LtdTel 01704 893109info@ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.ukwww.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

W18 REVIEW: W EXHIBITION & ELEMENTS

FOLLOWING the successful for-mat adopted two years ago, theDCS Group was once againrepresented at W18 by DustControl Systems Ltd, EcogateLtd and Gallito Ltd; underliningthe group’s capacity to providethe UK woodworking industrywith a ‘One Stop Source’ for dustand fume extraction productsand services.

Over the past two years the DCSGroup has continued to expandproduction at both its Dewsburyheadquarters and at the Group’smanufacturing facility at ThorpArch, near Wetherby. In 2016,Gallito announced the launch ofits FastClip Ductwork System andproduction of this high-qualityclip-fit ductwork, and associatedaccessories, now occupies aroundhalf of the 3,000 m2 of manu-facturing space; alongside thecompany’s facilities for fabricationof dry filter and water wash spraybooths, conveying systems, dryingand curing ovens, as well as designand installation of bespoketurnkey finishing systems.

Mark Carson, Gallito’s managingdirector since January this year, has been instrumental in the com-pany’s expansion since joining thecompany in 2017. “At Gallito, tradi-tional metalworking skills areemployed hand-in-hand with ad-vanced laser cutting technologyand automated machinery,” says

Mark Carson, “and we have the ca-pacity to manufacture high qual-ity products, in a range ofmaterials, to just about any shapeand size … W18 provided the idealopportunity to showcase ourmanufacturing skills, across arange of materials and finishes, aswell as being able to demonstrateour in-house design capabilities.”

The DCS Group stand was alsohost to extraction equipmentspecialist Schuko — Dust ControlSystems Ltd is the exclusive dis-tributor for the German manufac-turer’s products in the UK andvisitors to W18 were able to checkout the latest developments in ex-traction technology with the helpof a scaled-down replica filter unit.Recently-appointed sales directorfor DCS, Andy Hives, remarked:“Being able to view first-hand theadvanced technologies at work in-side a Schuko filter unit was quiteenlightening for our potential cus-tomers at the show … not easy toachieve with a telephone enquiry,or even a site visit.”

Also on display for the first timein the UK was the new SchukoVALDI which, with a footprint ofjust 2 m x 2 m and multiple buildand waste collection options, israising the bar for compact filterdesign and construction.

Ecogate Ltd provided W18 visi-tors with another practicaldemonstration of the Ecogate®

‘on-demand’ extraction optimisa-tion technology; clearly showinghow this worldwide-proven sys-tem can drastically reduce elec-tricity consumed by an extractionsystem. Ecogate was first seen inthe UK at W10, but the 2018 demofeatured the new generation Eco-gate greenBOX NXT controllerwhich allows control of up to 32Ecogates from a smartphone orother internet-connected device.Chris Oldfield, Ecogate’s managingdirector, commented: “As well asbeing able to explain the signifi-cant benefits of the Ecogate sys-tem to our potential end users,W18 also gave us the chance tomeet with like-minded estab-

lished business owners, from alliedtrades, to discuss the ongoing de-velopment of our network of au-thorised Ecogate ‘introducers’,resellers and installers.”

The general consensus fromDCS Group company directors wasthat W18 had lived up to all theirexpectations. “W18 had been amuch-anticipated show,” saysAndy Hives, “and we were not dis-appointed; it was a well-attendedshow, with a reassuringly positivevibe around the halls, and we werepleased with the flow of visitors toour stand — UK-based in themain, but also a significant repre-sentation from Irish woodworkingmanufacturers. The level of en-quiries for the Group was up on2016 — in quality as well as num-bers — and we are currently in theprocess of contacting everyonewho took the trouble to come andchat with us.”

In conclusion, DCS managingdirector, Philip Oldfield, com-mented: “I thought our standlooked great — a very profes-sional presentation and a credit toour design and installation teamwho have worked tirelessly on thisover recent months. Only time willtell if our attendance at W18generates sufficient additionalturnover to have made it worth-while but, after our initial review ofthe enquiries received over thefour days, we are optimistic thatprospective sales revenue couldbe in the region of 10 times ourspend on the show.”

Mr Oldfield confirmed that hehad booked a similar space againfor the exhibition in 2020 but, ifyou didn’t get a chance to visit theDCS Group stand at W18, checkout the new Group websites.DCS GroupTel 01924 482500www.DCSlimited.co.ukwww.ecogate.co.ukwww.gallito.co.uk

W18 REVIEW: W EXHIBITION & ELEMENTS

‘HOW CAN your products make my business more productive and efficient?”“How can your software tools help me to fully exploit my significant investmentin CNC equipment?” Those were just two of the questions woodworking com-panies asked Vero Software at the W18 trade fair.

And casework manufacturers wanted to know how to bridge the gap betweendesign and manufacture, which have been separate from each other in the past.

With Alphacam’s powerful automation and nesting functionality answering thosefirst two questions, and Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine module, closes the loopbetween sales and manufacture for casework manufacturers. Visitors to the showalso saw first-hand the software in action, driving a variety of CNC machine tools onmachinery suppliers’ stands.

During the four days of W18, Cabinet Vision and Alphacam between them closedmany sales, and gained hundreds of strong leads, many of which were looking to in-vest in the software in the short to medium term.

Michael Pettit, EMEA sales manager for Cabinet Vision and Alphacam, says visitorswere particularly interested in Alphacam’s new nesting engine, unveiled in the 2018 R2 release, which tests show delivers significant improvementsin material yield. “Using proprietary technology to deliver ‘best in class’ geometry and toolpath optimisation, the nesting engine provides faster cal-culation times, along with improved feedback and graphics.

“Customers are also moving away from having to program individual parts for their CNC production, and were impressed when they saw demon-strations showing how Alphacam’s latest automation tools in Automa-tion Manager can reduce programming time by several days each week.”

Cabinet Vision demonstrated its latest release, which includes all-newphoto rendering technology that provides a considerable enhancementin rendering capabilities from previous versions.

“It now gives manufacturers almost photo-like images which they canuse as a sales tool to show their customers exactly what the products willlook like in situ.”

And Cabinet Vision also partners with a number of machine tool sup-pliers, providing a total machine and software solution.

In conclusion, Michael Pettit says: “W18 gave us the opportunity tomeet new customers and gain significant leads. Also, it was good to catchup with existing customers, many who are our customers for many yearsand hear their stories and about how our market-leading solutions forthe woodworking industry have driven productivity and profitability intheir businesses.”Cabinet Vision l Tel 0118 922 6644 l www.cabinetvision.comAlphacam l Tel 0118 922 6677 l www.alphacam.com

SCHELLING UK Ltd enjoyed yetanother successful year at W18:on display were the Schellingfh4 cut-to-size saw completewith Barbaric LCV feeding sys-tems, a Votecs shredder with in-dustrial inline magnet for metal, ducting by Norduct and a filterby Modesta, all sold bySchelling UK Ltd.

Visitors to the Schelling UKstand were left impressed by theBarbaric LCV feeding system, which displayed smooth, fast andeasy feeding directly into theSchelling fh4.

The Barbaric feeder demon-strated how it can load either single sheets in longitudinal or head cut po-sitions straight onto the roller table of the fh4, then push the book or singlesheet up against the aligners in the rollertable to then proceed automati-cally with the cutting pattern. The number of boards and their loading di-rection are easily selected from the cutting patterns created by SchellingHPO optimisation on the Schelling FH4 saw control of the machine.

The Barbaric LCV feeding system, which is renowned for offeringcustom-made systems built with simple yet high-quality components, also showed off simple operation and seamless linking to the Schellingsoftware. Other benefits of this system include low-space requirementsfor those with restricted space, and physical relief on production workersdue to the automated nature of the feeder.

Schelling also showed off Votecs’ EZ 6/1 shredder which is believed tobe unique in the industry due to its exclusive features for veneershredding. Special features of the Votecs EZ 6/1 include: segmentedfloors; special cutting knives; veneer adapted rotor speeds; special screenfor veneer shredding.

Of course, the main event at the Schelling UK stand was the display

put on by the Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw. As withall of Schelling’s machines, the fh4 maintains thehighest precision possible over the entire service life, plus it has the highest level of automation in its class.

At W18 Schelling was proud to show off how thissaw offers maximum precision alongside speed andflexibility, to process cuts of both individual andmultiple panels.

Visitors to the stand watched the impressivedemonstration of the saw’s varied automatic settingsand automatically monitored functions, and wereshown a few of the special features of the saw withautospeed and double side aligner/dual strip aligner.

The dual strip aligners (one before and one afterthe saw line) remain on the material during the cut toensure maximum angular precision. The alignmentforce, along with various other saw settings, adjustsautomatically to the material thickness or packageheight with the aid of a frequency converter, mean-ing even thin panel strips can be cut and aligned withhigh precision.Schelling UK Ltd l Tel 01937 [email protected] l www.schelling.co.uk

W18 REVIEW: W EXHIBITION & ELEMENTS

LEADING woodworking machin-ery supplier, TM MachinerySales, showcased its largestrange of Striebig vertical panelsaws and ALKO dust extractionsystems to date at this year’swoodworking machinery andmaterials show, the W Exhibition.

Promoting the two well-knownbrands at the four-day event, tech-nical specialists and engineerswere on hand to demonstrate thevery latest models and softwareavailable, including the brand newStandard S vertical panel saw, which was demonstrated for thevery first time in the UK.

Based on the original ‘Standard’model, which has been a bestseller in the UK for over a decade, the Standard S TRK1 and TRK2now have new, integrated featuresto assist the user even further.

Differentiated by either an alu-minium or wooden support, theComfort package features a digitalmeasuring system with motorisedY-axis locking and adjustment asstandard. The digital display hassimple to operate positioning but-tons that allow the user to adjust

the saw’s position at the touch of abutton and a new VSA scoring sawunit, which is fully adjustable, thatallows the saw to work easily withcoated panel materials. It is alsoequipped with 17 rollers and eitherpedal or pneumatic brakes, as wellas a TRK dust extraction system.

The stand also provided an op-portunity to highlight Striebig’sfirst retro-fittable panel optimisa-tion programme (POP), Opti-Divide. Until now, the POP systemwas only available as a fully inte-

grated optimisation package onthe top-of-the-range Striebig ‘4D’vertical panel saw. However, withthe addition of this latest retro-fit-table device, users of existingStriebig vertical panel saws — re-gardless of the age or model ofmachine — can benefit from thevery latest optimisation technol-ogy. The intelligent software, which is only available in the UKthrough the Leicester-based ma-chinery supplier, has been createdto calculate the most effective cut-

ting strategy for each panel —maximising the user’s time andsubstantially reducing materialwaste. The system can also be con-nected to the Wi-Fi, allowing panelsizes to be sent to the machinequickly, reducing errors on eventhe most challenging of panels orduring strip cutting work.

OptiDivide, which was demon-strated at the show on the newStandard S vertical panel saw, con-sists of a single, compact computerthat is easily fitted to the machine. It comes equipped with a labelprinter for simple handling so,once pieces have been cut, eachpart can be labelled with a barcodeor the necessary product informa-tion for quick and simple handling.

Sitting alongside TM Machinery’sexclusive range of Striebig verticalpanel saws was its comprehensiverange of ALKO extraction powerunits, the 120, 160, 200 and 250, bri-quette press and the AST 1.0 Basicsanding bench, which made its UKdebut at the W Exhibition.TM MachineryTel 0116 271 7155www.tmmachinery.co.uk

THE RANGE of wide belt andedge sanding machines fromKündig UK Ltd on display at W18proved to be exceptionally pop-ular with visitors.

Wide belt sanders were repre-sented by both the Premium andBrilliant ranges. All Kündig wide beltsanders are constant passline ma-chines, with the sanding group rais-ing and lowering to the desiredthickness rather than the work-piece. This has been quoted bymany companies interviewed bythis magazine, as well as visitors toKündig's stand at W18, as a particu-lar advantage. The sanders are avail-able in working widths of 1,100mm, 1,350 mm and 1,600 mm.

The Premium range can be sup-plied with one to three sandingbelts. The first head is a calibrationroller, and in a two-head machine, such as that on display at W18,, thesecond head was a sanding padfor joinery, with an electronicsanding pad for joinery and ve-neers available as an option.

The Kündig Premium sandershave a host of options to offereven more versatility, includingcombinations of rollers and padsas well as the option of a cut-terblock, for jointed panels wherethere are strong glue lines.

The Brilliant range of Kündigsanders (yes, Brilliant is the modelname!) offer even more options. Inaddition to the head configura-tions available for the Premiumrange, there are additional optionsfor electronic sanding pads for thesanding of veneers and highersensitivity electronic sanding padsfor the sanding of lacquers.Machines can be provided withmultiple sanding heads as well astop and bottom sanding line.

At least one of the sandingheads in a Brilliant machine is po-

sitioned at an oblique angle, usu-ally the last one. Oblique sanding, developed by Kündig, has beenshown by Kündig to produce anexceptionally high quality finish, and this is again reflected in thecomments that companies usingthese sanders have provided tothis magazine. Sanding belts areof course always supplied to endusers in perfect condition, butover time tiny flaws may develop. These can be transferred to theworkpiece in the same way thattrack lines used to appear on faxmachines (remember those?). Byorienting the oblique sandinghead at a slight angle to the otherheads, so it is not perpendicular tothe direction of travel, the obliquesanding method obviates thisproblem. With surfaces such as ve-neers and lacquers, this can be asignificant advantage.

“We were joined by Mr ThomasTenburg from Kundig (Germany)who performed a number ofdemonstrations throughout theshow,” said Kündig UK's CarlO'Meara. “The part where we have

a purposely damaged sanding beltand show the difference betweentraditional ‘straight line’ sandingwhich shows the defect as opposedto oblique sanding giving a perfectfinish always amazes people, espe-cially those that have a constantstruggle with their existing straightline sanders.”

Also popular were the edgesanders, represented on the standby the Uniq model. These edgesanding machines are used bothfor solid wood and veneerededges. The oscillation of the abra-sive is programmable to optimisethe use of the sanding belt andthe whole sanding unit can tilt al-lowing the sanding of a beveledge whilst keeping the work-piece flat on the cast iron table.

The Uniq model comes withmany advantages. A heavy castiron work table is provided on oneside for solid wood sanding, and asimilar table is provided for veneersanding on the other side, the twotables being stepped in height to

allow both sides to be worked si-multaneously whilst using differ-ent parts of the abrasive.

Motorised height adjustmentand tilting of the abrasive belt isprovided as standard, therefore noadjustment of the working table isrequired. Mechanical inclination ofup to 45° without resetting of thetables, a patented feature, is in-cluded as standard.

The oscillation stroke is pro-grammable from 10 mm to 90mm. Dust extraction is providedby two suction caps. The beltwidth is 150-200 mm, and the beltlength is 2,000 mm. The workinglevel is approximately 830 mm onthe solid sanding side and 900mm on the veneer sanding side. The floor space required for theUniq model is 1,150 x 800 mm.

“The edge sanders have alwaysbeen met with a warm welcomeinto any workshop with a com-mon report being that it ends upbeing one of the most used ma-chines,” said Carl. “In particular, weare seeing an increase of sales ofthe Uniq-S which has an inte-grated feed system and thereforebrings automation to what isotherwise a time consuming andsomewhat tedious process.”

Carl concluded, “It is always apleasure to greet existing users andmeet potential new users alike. Sev-eral customers commented on howheavily built and easy to use ourmachines are and for those whosaw the Brilliant in action, they weretotally amazed at the finish, evenusing a purposely damaged sand-ing belt.”Kündig UK LtdTel 0845 833 [email protected]

GREG COX studied fine art and started his career as a setbuilder before starting up his own company in 2011 mak-ing fitted furniture, wardrobes and kitchens all from hisworkshop in East London.

Greg commented, “I saw some furniture and thought, Icould make that and it had a big price tag so I thought I wouldgive it a go and it has evolved naturally from making smallpieces into what I make today.”

In 2012 Greg purchased his first machines from the FelderGroup: an A3-31 planer-thicknesser and a N4400 bandsawfrom the Hammer range. “A friend of mine had a Hammerplaner-thicknesser and I was blown away, you could take thisrough bit of wood, put it through the planer and it comes outthis beautiful piece. I went straight online and found a reviewfor the Hammer A3-31, which I purchased because it had

great reviews and I then got a bandsaw at thesame time.”

Since then he has added to his collectionpurchasing, a K3 winner panel saw which hasbeen upgraded to a Felder K 700 S as the busi-ness has grown as well as buying a RL 200 dustextractor, a FAT 300 work table and recently aFelder F 700 Z spindle moulder.

“The spindle moulder is amazing, we havedigital rise and fall on this machine as well asthe table saw and being able to get it that ac-curate is amazing! It has allowed us to makenew things like handles and edge pulls as wellas our own mouldings. It’s made everythingmuch easier and with the power feeder it is alot safer.”

Speaking about his FAT 300 work table, Gregsaid, “I’ve wanted it for years; I like the fact it isa work bench, it is a table for storing stuff on,you can finish things on it, you can change theheight and wheel it around, I can make it thesame height as my van, slide everything ontoit, wheel it into my workshop, pump it up andslide it onto my bench. After that, I can use itas an infeed or outfeed for the planer, it’s soversatile it’s amazing like having an extra pairof hands.”

When asked about the service he receivesfrom Felder Group UK, Greg commented, “I likethe fact that if everything is with one company,it is one port of call. If an engineer comes, theycan service all the machines in one hit, which isbrilliant and makes my life much easier.”Felder GroupTel 01908 635000www.felder-group.co.uk

SANDING & FINISHING

GALLITO Ltd, a member of theDCS Group of companies, hasrecently installed a comprehen-sive product finishing facility forthe UK’s premier manufacturerand supplier of themed propsand accessories.

Based at Thorp Arch Estate, nearWetherby in West Yorkshire, EventProp Hire provides a (literally) incred-ible range of goods on hire for anykind of themed event; ranging fromindulgent private parties, to glam-orous corporate events, new productlaunches, and have even adornedthe sets of ‘Strictly’ and ‘X-Factor’!

Event Prop hire was founded 15years ago by co-directors MatthewEast and Rosie Ellis — the duo hadstudied together through univer-sity, graduating in 2002 with de-grees in Entertainment Designand dreams of setting up in busi-ness designing, building and sell-ing props. Within a couple of years, those dreams had become realityand the business, originally calledScenecraft, was operating from a150 m2 workshop and sellingprops ranging from alien cos-tumes to giant sets of teeth.

Many of the company’s clientswere involved with the events in-dustry and, from early on, it be-came apparent that the themedprops they were being commis-sioned to build would generallybe used just once … and then

scrapped. It occurred to Matt andRosie that it would be much morecost-effective for their clients ifthey were able to hire the props, certainly much less wasteful, andpotentially a much more lucrativebusiness model. The upshot of thisinspired notion was a relocation ofthe business to larger premises, employment for an extra pair ofhands, a company van … and areincarnation of the business asEvent Prop Hire.

Event Prop Hire rapidly ac-quired a reputation for excep-tional quality and service withinthe industry and, over the nextfew years, as the company’s clientbase grew exponentially, EventProp Hire grew to meet the de-mand. In 2014, with its head officeand manufacturing facility locatedon the outskirts of York, the com-pany had accumulated tens ofthousands of stock items whichwere now being stored in rentedwarehouse buildings at ThorpArch Estate. With around 60 em-ployees operating across the twoYorkshire sites, the company tookanother giant step forward byopening a showroom in The Cityof London, close to Aldgate TubeStation; giving Event Prop Hire ashop window on the doorstep ofthree quarters of the company’sexpanding clientele.

In 2017, with turnover now ex-

ceeding £3 million, this continuedgrowth had in no small way beendue to the company’s commit-ment to quality and service, and inorder to sustain this ethos the de-cision was taken to streamline thebusiness by bringing admin, man-ufacturing and storage under oneroof. The availability of one vastspace at Thorp Arch provided theobvious solution, and the com-pany’s new headquarters is spreadacross some 13,500 m2, storingthousands of props and housing abrand new, custom-built manu-facturing facility.

Before this major step could beaccomplished successfully, a planto deliver a smooth transition ofproduction from York to ThorpArch had to be put in place, withthe assurance that the new manu-facturing facility was fit and readyfrom the get go to create new be-spoke props, repair and maintainexisting stock, and to constantlyprepare items for dispatch to anevent in ‘as good as new’ condi-tion. Event Prop Hire now hasstate-of-the-art production facili-ties including 3-D scanning, threeand four axis CNC machining, aswell as a design and print studio— and all of these facilities are en-joyed to the full by a team of pas-sionate professionals, each skilledin different areas of expertise.

In setting up the new produc-

tion facility, the directors recog-nised that investment in the bestavailable plant and equipmentwas a major contributory factor intheir quest for unrivalled quality offinish. And, when it came toprocuring design and construc-tion of new enclosures for the fin-ishing department, a Googlesearch for prospective suppliersturned up an ace within half a mileof their new premises, on thesame industrial estate … GallitoLtd has been involved with the de-sign, manufacture and installationof quality spray booths and paintfinishing systems for over 40 years, and has itself expanded rapidlysince becoming part of the DCSGroup of companies. Today, Gallitooffers advanced, cost-effective so-lutions, and a capability that ex-tends from standard spray boothsand ovens, through to turnkey fin-ishing systems.

Gallito’s sales manager, MikeLodge, handled the initial enquiryand, following site visits and dis-cussions with Matt to assess therequirements, was able to presenta proposal to Event Prop Hirewhich fully met the company’sneeds for a range of different sizedenclosures; providing a series ofclean, safe areas for carrying out amultiplicity of manufacturing andmaintenance tasks — but all withthe same common requirement

for efficient and effective extrac-tion of potentially harmful fumesand particulates.

“Matthew knew what hewanted to achieve from the instal-lation of new spray booths and en-closures, and it was then our job to

interpret those requirements andcome up with a design that ful-filled all his needs, and providedan extraction capacity that wouldcope effectively and easily withthe many and varied demands ofthe manufacturing and mainte-

nance departments,” Mike Lodgeexplained. Before commencing onany design work for the new facil-ity Gallito undertook three-di-mensional scanning at thewarehouse and, utilising thisscanned data within their profes-

sional engineering design soft-ware, the team’s designers createda virtual 3D environment in whichto develop a design layout for thestructure — ensuring precision inmanufacture and guaranteeing aperfect fit when the enclosureswere installed on site.

The result is an imposing two-storey construction, providing atotal floor space of around 800 m2,with nine individual enclosures, utilising 12 separate belt-drivenaxial fans, sized at 710 mm and813 mm diameter, from 5.5 kW to7.5 kW, and capable of extractinga combined total of over 280,000m3 of air per hour. In addition to aventilated paint storeroom, thereare seven enclosures on theground floor, including four iden-tical enclosures, used primarily forsanding operations, sized at 4.5 mx 4.5 m x 3 m high, each with adedicated extraction fan, double-width sliding access doors, and aseries of interconnecting person-nel doors to permit unrestrictedaccess from one room to another. On the opposite side of a 20 mlong covered access corridor aretwo further enclosures; each witha floor area of around 40 m2 andvertical filtration area of approxi-mately 12 m2, again serviced by in-dependent extraction fans — one5.5 kW and the other 7.5 kW, and

Designed, manufactured and installed by Gallito Ltd, this two-storey installation comprises a total of nine enclosures; providing EventProp Hire with a clean, safe environment for product finishing operations.

In the largest enclosure, with a working height of 3.5 metres, Event Prop Hire has over 100 m2

of floor space available – allowing finishing work to be undertaken on multiple items at the sametime.

capable of extracting over 50,000m3 per hour.

The paint store is centrally-lo-cated for easy access from all areas, and is situated adjacent to thelargest enclosure in the facility. With a personnel access door di-rectly into the paint store, and twofurther double-width sliding doorsproviding access to 112 m2 of work-able floor space, this enclosure pro-vides filtration across an area ofaround 45 m2; with one entire wallfitted with filter media, and extrac-tion being provided by four sepa-rate 7.5 kW fans — capable ofextracting over 90,000 m3 of air perhour from this large open space.

The mezzanine area is accessedfrom either end of the structure viasteel staircases, and a gated load-ing area on the first floor landingarea allows items to be forklifted upand down as necessary. This areaprovides two further independentspray booth enclosures, each hav-ing a filtration area of around 15m2. These enclosures have threemetre high ceilings and each roomhas independent extraction pro-vided by two 5.5 kW fans.

“This has been an interesting andnovel project for our team at Gallito,”commented Mike Lodge, “and youcan’t help but smile when you walkthrough the warehouse at EventProp Hire. The close geographical lo-cation of the two businesses en-sured excellent communication andcollaboration throughout the de-sign and construction process and, with our manufacturing plant on-hand just round the corner, anyminor design modifications re-quested by EPH were executedswiftly and efficiently.”

Everyone involved with the newfinishing department is compli-mentary about the installationwhich Gallito’s team fitted in just20 working days. “We supply prod-ucts on hire for over 2,000 eventsevery year,” says Matthew East, “in-

cluding corporate events for someof the biggest brands and blue-chip companies and, to maintainour reputation for excellent qualityand service, our production facilitymust be able to cope with any-thing and everything we throw atit, in an efficient and timely man-ner. This installation by Gallito hasachieved what we asked for andhas fulfilled all our expectations —from first enquiry through to theday of commissioning, Mike Lodgeand the team of Gallito designers, engineers and fitters have per-formed outstandingly.”

Mark Carson, who took over thereins as Gallito’s managing direc-tor in January, following the retire-

ment of former managing director,Ian Ward, has been instrumental inthe company’s expansion sincejoining the company in July 2017.The business now occupies almost3,000 m2 of manufacturing spaceat Thorp Arch, and traditional met-alworking skills are supported bya plethora of automated machin-ery, including advanced laser cut-ting technology. Gallito has thecapacity to manufacture highquality bespoke spray booths andenclosures, in a range of materials,to just about any shape and size, employing dry filter or water washfiltration systems, along with astandard range of booths, paintkitchens, drying ovens, associated

conveying equipment and ancil-laries. The company also manufac-tures the FastClip DuctworkSystem — a complete range ofclip-together ductwork sectionsand components, made from highquality galvanised steel, and avail-able in a wide range of sizes.

“I was delighted with the endresult our engineers haveachieved here,” says Mark Carson.“It was terrific to receive such ex-cellent feedback from Matt andthe team at Event Prop Hire and toobserve the plant being utilised asintended.”Gallito LtdTel 01937 844698www.gallito.co.uk

WOODWASTE & DUST CONTROL

A NORFOLK staircase manufacturer has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood WasteTechnology to continue to convert waste wood into free heating for the factory.

Cullum & Clarke Joinery is a specialist manufacturer of staircases, windows and doors as well as allother purpose-made joinery, supplying to both trade and public since the business started in 1982.The company had previously invested in a wood waste heater from another manufacturer which de-veloped a problem, so managing director Barry Cullum did some research on a replacement. Afterreading positive reviews about the UK manufactured wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Tech-nology, Barry contacted them for more information.

Following a site survey and quotation, Barry ordered a WT5 from Wood Waste Technology. Barryexplains: “We are delighted with our new wood waste heater. Wood Waste Technology’s heaters arewell made, easy to use, efficient and competitively priced, and the team at Wood Waste Technologywas great to deal with. We even managed to duct some of the heat to another area so all the em-ployees in our 6,000 ft2 workshop feel the warmth. Our business really benefits from having a woodwaste heater on the premises so we didn’t hesitate to buy a replacement once our old one devel-oped a problem. From what we’ve seen so far we think Wood Waste Technology’s products are sec-ond to none, and we are not surprised to hear that all the wood waste heaters they have everproduced are still in operation today.”

Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units tolarger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installationand on-going maintenance. WORKING in collaboration with UK Archi-tecture and Design Agency, New BritishDesign (NBD), Festool tools have been usedto help create the off-grid pop-up pub. Theunique Cornwall based project is now fullyoperational — powered solely throughhydro and solar technology.

Working with nature to enhance what wasalready there, the low-impact cabin structurewas created from a pared down materialpalate of wood, tin and polycarbonate, usingonly locally sourced products. It was importantthat the tools used were of the highest qual-ity, designed with ease-of-use and safety inmind. Without the use of electricity in such aremote location, the project required equip-ment that was both mobile and efficient, andFestool provided the ideal solution.

The Festool drills used on the project, in-cluding the T18 and C18, benefit from pre-mium battery durability which was perfect forthe 12-hour work days onsite. They also fea-ture brushless EC-TEC motor technology, mak-ing them light without compromising onpower, perfect for users in any location.

“I’ve trialled all the professional grade tool brands over the years andFestool has consistently stood out as the best,” explained Ben Huggins, ar-chitect and designer founder of New British Design, who came up withthe innovative concept. “We needed to exploit the options available to usthrough the cordless range, beyond just drills and drivers. The unique

cabin was an off-grid project, and needed anoff-grid solution.” A key tool for the project wasFestool’s TSC 55 plunge cut saw. “Being able toaccurately redimension timber sections on siteproved invaluable, and there was little it couldnot handle.,” said Ben. With a powerful S200 rev-olutions per minute and 2.2 mm standard sawblade, the TSC 55 provided the necessary preci-sion, whilst maintaining a powerful cutting ca-pacity, and the quick acting break and guidewedges were provide essential safety to users.

Festool’s commitment to the health of tradeprofessionals was demonstrated on site, withthe new Eccentric Sander ETSC connected to adust extractor to keep the working environ-ment clear of harmful dust whilst the tool is inuse. Dust extraction is an integral element ofthe Festool system, with all products er-gonomically designed to work together toprovide a comfortable and efficient environ-ment, as well as a high-quality finish.

“The Festool range is made up of profes-sional tools designed and built to deliver out-standing results,” concluded Ben, “with theirunique value proposition of being the go-to

premium tool brand, the decision of New British Design and other pro-fessionals to pay extra for quality and precision is well justified.”New British Designhttps://www.newbritishdesign.co.uk/off-grid-pubFestool l https://www.festool.co.uk

WOODWASTE & DUST CONTROL

GEERT HERMES launched his own woodworking company in 1995.Some 23 years later he is still in business, from Nistelrode in theNetherlands with 17 employees. He has been keeping his factoryclean and safe with a Modesta chain filter for 14 years.

We meet Geert Hermes, owner and founder of G. Hermes Joinery inhis office in Nistelrode. This is where he moved in 2007 when the originalfactory became too small to house his growing business. From here heproduces and delivers wooden window frames, windows, doors, foldingwalls and sliding doors, for both consumers and businesses. Geert spe-cialises in façade units in various wood types, like mahogany, merbau andaccoya.

Many of his products go to contractors and construction companies, used in non-residential constructions, new building projects and houserenovations, among others; the rest go to consumers who might need anew window frame, for instance.

Geert was no stranger to the woodworking industry when he launchedhis business in 1995. He had operated a woodworking factory for yearsalongside his father and younger brother. After a decade and at the ageof 28 he decided to leave and do something else, but, as he likes to putit himself, “Carpentry never lost its charm”. When he found the perfect lo-cation in Nistelrode two years later, he decided to take the plunge andstart his own business. “I knew the market, the customers and suppliers, and I knew where to go. I just needed to live up to their expectations.”After two months he hired his first employee, and in the first year he hiredanother five.

Geert and his team saw the wood industry change over the years. “Westarted to get more and more small orders instead of a few big ones.” Thereason was an increase in consumers buying directly from him, but alsochanges in the housing market. As Geert explains, where a new block ofhouses would previously be built in one go, and he would have to de-liver a large order of window frames and doors, projects would now becompleted in several, smaller steps. Geert also notices a shift in what hap-pens behind a computer and what is done on the factory floor: “Before,I’d give the plan of a house to one of my carpenters to get to work. I’dmake some notes, add some explanation here and there, and trusted heknew what to do. Nowadays I have to prepare the data completely be-forehand and make sure every detail is right, because the drawing goesinto the machine. There’s not that much manual work involved any more.”

What did not change is the importance of good extraction. “Safetystandards become increasingly more demanding and machines arepacked with sensors. You can have the most beautiful woodworking ma-chines, but without dust extraction you’ll get nowhere,” says Geert. Hiscompany grew steadily through several expansions, but the biggest stepforward occurred in 2004: he leapt ahead with automation and his filtersystem’s capacity became inadequate. That’s where Modesta came in.Geert says: “I was aware of them because they were quite well known inthe industry.” At the time he was using a system delivered by anothercompany, but it had experienced plenty of problems. “There was alwayssomething wrong. We had to halt our machines on a regular basis be-cause of problems with the dust extraction. When that happens we could

be looking at two days of stock before all my workers would be left stand-ing empty-handed on the factory floor. I decided to invest in a Modestafilter system to stop this from happening.”

Geert uses a chain filter with a Reddler chain to remove sawdust fromthe factory floor safely and without concerns. Once he had bought thatfirst machine he never looked back. “I was very satisfied with Modestaright from the start. Their operational reliability and service make the dif-ference,” he says. In the 14 years he has been using Modesta’s expertise, his production has not stood still for a day. “All we have had is one ma-chine failure on a winter day because of the cold, but when it happened,Modesta’s service team made sure the problem was fixed in no time.”

Another advantage is the modular set-up of the machines, says Geert. “The good thing about those several small motorsis that the system can keep operating at all times.” Geert’spoint of contact has always been Jan Piette, with whom he’sstill in regular touch. He is also very happy with the services ofthe technicians. “It’s a good thing that it is always the sameguys who come over for the installation and maintenance. They have a lot of knowledge and deliver a good job.”

A Modesta filter system is an investment, he admits. “Butit’s totally worth it: when you experience the disadvantages ofunexpected interruptions, you’re ready to invest in a Modestasystem.”

What would he like to advise potential customers about totake their factories to the next level? “Don’t hesitate. The mostimportant thing is that you’ll always be able to keep your fac-tory running. And Modesta makes sure of that.”ModestaTel 0113 868 0247 Email: [email protected] www.modestafilters.co.uk

A LEADING UK manufacturer ofhigh quality orangeries has de-veloped a unique approach tousing Alphacam. It creates spe-cialist macros to populate vitalmanufacturing information insoftware.

David Salisbury Joinery Ltd spe-cialises in the manufacturer andinstallation of prestigious, con-temporary, high quality timberconservatories and orangeries, largely from Sapele hard wood, and Siberian Larch.

Operating with around 130 em-ployees from purpose-built prem-ises in Somerset, owner andfounder David Salisbury says: “In2003 we bought our first CNCrouter to manufacture conserva-tory roofs and process door leaves.I started creating macros for this.”

The company initially becameknown for hardwood conserva-tories; however, its flagship prod-uct is now the orangery, which inrecent years has become morepopular than conservatories dueto its flexible usage.

Processing manager GrahamHill explains this change in themarket: “Conservatories can oftenbe too hot in summer and too coldin winter. Orangeries have flat, in-sulated roofs with a glazed lanternarea in the middle, considerablyreducing the glass area.

“It combines all the good as-pects of a conservatory but with amuch more liveable room which isan extension of the house. This

means they have become hugelypopular.”

Established as a UK marketleader in these products, GrahamHill says the company’s technicalability allows them to take oncomplex and sensitive projects forlisted and graded buildings.

“We believe we are the onlycompany able to take on particu-lar projects — for example when itis a very complex or sensitive site,we have to work with authoritieson what is acceptable, due to thenature of the building it is goingon to. Our expertise is designingstructures that will meet the au-thority’s approval, while giving thecustomer what they want.”

Work has recently been com-

pleted on Arlington Hall, a Na-tional Trust property, which in-volved replacing the iconic, traditional glass roof Victorianconservatory.

The company’s technical ap-proach allowed them to automatemuch of this project using custommacros in Alphacam.

“On a typical contract at leasthalf of the components go throughAlphacam. In the Victorian dayswhen orangeries were made fromstone, the pilasters were stonecolumns. Now these are replicatedin wood using Alphacam.

“We also put the enhancedfacias through Alphacam for theoutside cutting on our MAKA CNCmachine tools. Then the whole of

the roof is done through the CNC.”The company has a unique ap-

proach to Alphacam, as DavidSalisbury explains: “I’d always hada keen interest in the differentgeometry of conservatory roofs. Iwanted a software solution thatwould allow us to solve any geo-metry issue.”

Alphacam is used in two ways;first, traditionally for complex be-spoke parts and curved workwhich is generally unique; andsecond, with macros to automatelarge repetitive jobs.

Graham Hill says: “We usemacros that we write ourselves foraround 75 per cent of the work wedo, which import the relevant in-formation into Alphacam. Themacros effectively provide a plat-form for telling Alphacam what todo by populating all the relevantfields.”

Working to tolerances of 1 mmor less, high accuracy is vital to en-sure the completed product is cor-rect. “We have honed ourprocesses over many years, to theextent that we don’t assemble anyof our roof structures in the fac-tory … each component is takento the customer’s site and erectedthere, without ever having beenput together before, because weare completely confident of theaccuracy that when it goes up onsite it will all fit perfectly.”

The Alphacam macros playsuch a key role in the running ofthe business that they employ afull time software developer,Adrian Fear, who supports existingmacros with improvements, andcreates new ones.

“The macros allow us to auto-

mate production without havingto do manual CNC work. We drivemost of it from a database, push-ing through all manner of infor-mation, including length, breadth, width, tenon information, pocketinformation that the tenons gointo, rebates, mitres … it is all theinformation needed to cut thecomponent.

“Without the macro we wouldhave to input that informationinto Alphacam either manually ordrop in an existing drawing andadjust it.”

Adrian Fear is currently devel-oping new software for the com-pany’s Oak Building range and, once finished, the macro-basedsolution should reduce CNC pro-

gramming time down from fourdays, to about three hours.

Alphacam’s ability to take themacros in its stride to create theNC code is a huge benefit. For adesign that has already beenproven out, it takes only 30 sec-onds to pull in the component, run a standard simulation test, andthen post straight to the machine.

CAD/CAM programmerJames Davis uses Alpha-cam and macros on a dailybasis.

He says the macroscreen requests the datawhich opens a drop-downlist of components.

“All components havedifferent features, but theindividual macro can pop-ulate all the fields for mostof the components weneed. So simply pickingthe component from thedrop-down menu gener-ally populates all the re-quired fields. Once thecode’s created and posted, that’s the macro’s job fin-ished for that component.”

Alphacam 3D simulator is usedto check before posting to theCNC machine. The two machinesused, MAKA 1 and 2, have 32 toolson each and are capable of fullfive-axis routing, with MAKA 1working with bigger pieces of tim-ber. MAKA 2 has twin channelswith automated pods in line forrobot loading.

The machine sets them upwherever they are programmed tobe, and the robot loads the timberon. David Salisbury says roboticloading presented the mostdifficult programming challenge,to position the vacuum podsautomatically.

“We worked closely with Alpha-cam’s application engineers on de-veloping this.

“Now we have got a fully auto-mated system where a bar code tiesin with the NC code generated byAlphacam. It goes onto the ma-chine, which reads the bar code andcalls up the right NC code. That hasbeen very successful.”AlphacamTel 0118 922 6677www.alphacam.com

FOLLOWING INSTALLATION of ahigh-performance CNC routersupplied by AXYZ International,Burton upon Trent-based WHMason & Son (Timber Mer-chants) has boosted productionand enabled further diversifica-tion into new markets. Estab-lished in 1897, the company isone of the longest establishedand most successful businessesin Staffordshire, founded on animpressive pedigree and sup-ported by a continually expand-ing customer base.

As a major importer, stockist anddistributor of different kinds of tim-ber, the company enables a widerange of applications in many dif-ferent markets, including the in-dustrial woodworking, furnituremanufacturing, joinery and panelprocessing sectors.

A key activity, however, is thesupply of bespoke products suchas exhibition stands, retail displayunits and shelving, garden furni-ture and, somewhat uniquely,

wooden casks for the wine, brew-ing and distilling industries.

Director of WH Mason & Son,Mike Cherry, commented: “Our suc-cessful business relationship withAXYZ International dates back tothe time we installed a smaller CNCrouter supplied by Pacer Systemsprior to its acquisition by AXYZ. Atthat time, we were sourcing onlyproduction tools from the AXYZ24/7 online purchasing facility andit was due to AXYZ International’sknown reputation for reliabilitythat we decided to purchase a newand higher-performance AXYZ ma-chine that would better meet cur-rent and predicted future customerrequirements.”

The AXYZ CNC router installed isone of the 4000 series and arguablythe most popular within the indus-tries being served by WH Mason &Son. Sales manager of the com-pany, Jason Cherry, commented:“The AXYZ 4010 machine has aprocessing area of 3 m x 1.5 m. Itwill handle all sizes and volumes of

the work we undertake and incor-porates a 10-station ATC (Auto-matic Tool Change) facility for workinvolving multiple tooling require-ments and the latest AXYZ A2MCmachine controller.

“As explained by AXYZ Inter-national, this particular machineenhancement is designed to com-prehensively resolve problems as-sociated with ‘bounce’ andvibration caused by sudden accel-eration/deceleration frequently ex-perienced with less technicallyadvanced control systems.”

The router is supported by thenon-standard VECTRIC Aspire de-sign and production softwarerather than the standard VECTRICPro version generally supplied withAXYZ machines.

Jason Cherry added: “The choiceof software was based on our needfor greater flexibility and ease ofuse and because the VECTRIC As-pire software is fully compatiblewith the laser cutting systems wealso use.”

On the service provided byAXYZ International, prior to, duringand following installation of theAXYZ 4010 router, both Mike andJason Cherry concurred: “The serv-ice was excellent, from the initialdiscussions covering our precise re-quirements, the ability to visit theAXYZ main facility in Telford for ademonstration of the router beforeplacing an order through to thesubsequent on-site product train-ing and ongoing technical supportprovided.”

As to the future, Mike Cherryconcluded: “We have the space andcapacity to increase the number ofmachines and make additions toour workforce to meet customer re-quirements. For both, the serviceprovided by AXYZ International willcontinue to be a key factor.”W H MasonTel 01283 563455www.whmasonandsonltd.co.uk
