TUCKER Joinery is a long established, family run business offering a complete range of timber productsincluding joinery, furniture, staircases, conservatories and shopfitting, as well as providing a spraying & finishing service. Recently, company owner, Lee Tucker, invested in a refurbished “supersized” clamp fromLamont. Lee’s wife, Emma, also part of the company, took the time to speak to PW&SS about this purchase.

Emma explained that the refurbished clamp was re-quired as its predecessor, which Tucker Joinery hadowned for a number of years, had failed and neededto be replaced. Emma said that the company hadturned to Lamont “because it is a name we know andtrust.” Lee had spoken to Alan Lamont in the past: andit was on the basis of these conversations that theorder was placed now.

The clamp is used across the full range of TuckerJoinery’s products, including windows, doors, cup-boards and units. Even having had a clamp before,Emma said that the main advantage of the new refur-bished clamp had brought was time saving. “Work thatwould take somebody by hand three or four days wecan now do in half a day. We can do quite a lot moreon this one, so it is a lot better for us.”

She continues: “If anybody is looking for anythingsimilar in a similar sort of business, we couldn’t praisethe clamp enough. The time it has saved us is incredi-ble and the whole process of buying it was easy. Youwere always kept up to date.” And concerning Alan, she says, “He was really helpful, kept us informed allthe time, didn’t mind us phoning up to ask questionsabout delivery, etc. He was really approachable andreally helpful.” Asked if she would recommendLamont, Emma replied, “Yes, definitely.”Lamont l Tel 01461 40017Email [email protected]

SCM CNCs for Smart Garden OfficesBASED IN rural Suffolk, SmartGarden Offices is a specialist inthe designing and manu-facturing of garden offices andstudios and is renowned for thequality and affordability, pro-viding a full customer service in-cluding delivery and installationthat includes insulation, doubleglazing, flooring, cabling and in-ternal furniture.

Smart Garden Offices offers anextensive range of buildings witheach one being personalised tomeet each of the customers’ indi-vidual requirements in terms ofoverall dimensions and position-ing in the garden after a site sur-vey. Fully fitted interiors includethe Smart Versa Desk System offer-ing an ergonomic workspace thathas been purpose designed foreach one of the Smart office range, optimising internal space and pro-viding work surfaces, shelving andcupboards, all being installed afterthe office has been erected.

Smart’s unique manufacturingsystem allows it to complete 90%of the build process within its ownfactory, with the remaining tasksbeing final assembly on site.

Smart Garden Offices manag-ing director, Charlie Dalton, com-ments: “Due to more and morepeople now being able to workfrom home rather than have tocommute long distances to theirworkplace, we have received a sig-nificant increase in both enquiriesand orders for our garden offices,so our lead times were increasing. In order to improve our lead timesand also increase capacity in ourfactory, I decided to investigatethe installation of a CNC machin-ing centre as I felt it would assistour machining capacity and pro-vide greater accuracy in assem-bling our component parts.

“As we had no CNC experience,we knew that we required a de-

gree of ‘hand-holding’, so we notonly looked at Italian and Germanmanufactured machines, but alsothe training and back-up providedin the short and long term. We ap-proached Phil Vaux of Blyth Ma-chinery, SCM’s distributor in EastAnglia, as we had previously pur-chased an SCM combinationmachine from him. He arrangeddemonstrations along with SCM’sRoger Gabb at customers produc-ing solid wood components.

“After much consideration, wedecided to purchase the SCM CNCmachining centre model Tech Z2with a 5,200 mm long table to ac-commodate our 4,800 mmlongest component.”

The inspiration behind SCM pro-

ducing the Tech Z2 is that of pro-viding the very best solution forthe most dynamic woodworking, joinery and panel sectors, setting anew benchmark for those markets.

The Tech Z2 is considered idealfor the production of customisedfurniture, panel machining and itcan also be equipped with devicessuitable for solid wood machiningfor the joinery market. It has a vec-torial positioning speed of 83m/min (X-Y axes).

High performance is due to thelatest ‘Photobumpers’ safety pro-tections (a patented solution),avoiding light cells or floor mats. Also, to save valuable floor space, the electrical cabinet and pneu-matics are installed within the ma-chine base. Customisation andflexibility are due to the widechoice of equipment pre-settings,with the high performance work-table with bars and vacuum podsand the ‘Penta’ function.

The work table consists of eight1,300 mm TV aluminium bars withpneumatic locking after positioningalong the table. Various suctioncups are located along the bars tohold the components to be ma-chined with alignment against tworows of pneumatic stops.

The mechanical fixing of thevacuum cups provides the cer-tainty and guarantee of quality re-sults by utilising a powerfulmechanical grip that locks into po-sition the vacuum cups instead ofthe widespread vacuum system.

The machine’s cantilever struc-ture is believed to be unique andvery easy to use. It is believed tobe the only structure that allowsthe loading of components along

the ‘Y’ axis far longer than the stan-dard working capacity of the ma-chine, which is 5,200 x 1,300 mm.

A powerful 11 kW electro-spindle running up to 24,000 rpmenables the Tech Z2 to machineheavy duty materials and timberwithout any problems.

The electrospindle is fitted witha vector axis with Penta digital con-trol which provides automatic rota-tion at 360° in the X-Y directionswhen angular heads are fitted.

Tooling is supplied to theelectrospindle by either an R8rapid tool changer with eight tool-ing positions or a TR10 automatictool changer with a capacity of 10tools or machining heads and islocated at the end of themachine’s table.

Programming of the Tech Z2using SCM Group’s Xilog Maestrowith the advantage of havingsimple and intuitive features andis very easy to use even for themost inexperienced operator. Anadditional key was supplied forprogramming in the office and amovable control panel with a PCadjacent to the machine.

Charlie Dalton concludes: “Weare very pleased with our SCMTech Z2 and are already experi-encing the many advantages themachine provides. For example, aQuarto Base Rail that previouslytook 40-50 minutes to machinenow takes only 10 minutes, so amajority of work is now going onthe CNC including wall panels thatare machined very fast. Lead timesare gradually reducing, making allour customers very happy.”Smart Garden OfficesTel 01473 833997www.smartgardenoffices.co.ukSCM Group (UK) LtdTel 0115 977 [email protected]

THE BRITISH Fenestration RatingCouncil (BFRC) and Leitz Toolingnow offer 18 different BFRC windowlicenses for products made usingLeitz Thermo Tech Window System.

Leading supplier of tooling toBritish industry, Leitz Tooling devel-oped its ThermoTech Window Systemtooling for the efficient manufactureof high quality ‘A’ rated thermal storm-proof and flush casement timber win-dows. The system is complete, compliant and scalable, and providesreductions in waste and sanding andincreased performance and finish.

Based on 18 variations of energyrated timber window manufacture, the BFRC licences can be purchased byany company manufacturing timberwindows using Leitz ThermoTech Win-dow System stack tooling. The licencesenable manufacturers to respond toincreasing consumer requests for en-ergy rated windows and offer a com-petitive advantage.

At launch, licences are available for18 versions, accommodating varia-tions in materials, type and thick-nesses on designs for six types ofstormproof and 12 types of flush case-ment timber windows. More are al-ready planned, including tilt & turn, box sash, aluminium-clad, ‘PassiveHouse’ compatible, and others.

Payable directly to BFRC, customers can purchase a single annualThermoTech Window System licence, or at a considerable discount canpurchase all 18 licences, again for an annual fee. Leitz can also help com-panies arrange the annual audit necessary for licences to be valid. Eachlicence comes with energy certificate labels for the finished products, PDFversions of the licences and full colour energy certificate vehicle liverystickers. Every licenced company will be listed on the BFRC website andaccording to a survey of BFRC registered installers last year, 74% of in-stallers get new customer enquiries through BFRC registration.

The features and benefits of the ThermoTech Window System meanthat on all designs, U values of timber windows are 1.4 or better, the de-signs are expandable for different hinges, and the profiles on the systemare easily changed without the need to purchase extra tools.

The system is available as dedicated sets for spindle moulders, tenoners, CNC machine centres and window machines.

BFRC is the independent authority for rating the energy efficiency of win-dows and doors in England and Wales. The BFRC energy ratings label — sim-

ilar to those found on washing machinesand fridges — means that homeownerscan be sure exactly what product theyare buying and can compare competingproducts. “BFRC is delighted to havesigned up Leitz and significantly added tothe number of timber-framed windowsthat will now be BFRC rated,” commentedBFRC managing director, Chris Mayne.“This increases the choice available forhomeowners and the numbers that willbe able to receive a BFRC HomeownerEnergy Ratings Certificate.”

Leitz Tooling UK managing director,Simon Liddell, said: “Our ThermoTechWindow System tooling is not only asaccessible and as future-proof as wecan make it, but includes all the sup-port our customers might need —which now includes making BFRC en-ergy rated timber window licencesavailable for products manufacturedwith our system. Modern timber win-dows continue to gain market share inthe UK and with companies looking todiversify and gain a competitive ad-vantage, we are doing all we can tohelp level the playing field for timberwindow manufacturers.”Leitz ToolingTel 01279 454530Email [email protected]://shopuk.leitz.org

STERLING OSB (orientedstrand board) is consid-ered perfect for today’sbuilding refurbishmentprojects.

Increasingly, buildersare substituting plywoodfor Sterling OSB; it is morecost-effective, environ-mentally-efficient andhighly versatile with manyvariations depending onthe application.

Sterling OSB (OrientedStrand Board) is a multi-layered timber product butone which is very differentfrom plywood.

Instead of being madefrom alternate sheets ofveneer placed at 90° toeach other, Sterling OSB is

made from layeringstrands of wood in specificorientations and thenbonding the layers with aresin.

Norbord, one of theworld’s leading manufac-turers of engineeredwood-based panels, nowproduces eight types ofSterling OSB.

These are Sterling OSB2,Sterling OSB3, Sterling OSBT&G, Sterling OSB Conti,Sterling OSB Roofcoat,Sterling OSB Sitecoat and arange of three new SterlingOSB fire solutions. Each hasbeen developed for spe-cific applications.

Each panel is made fromforest thinnings that arethe by-product when small

diameter timber is felled; this gives better quality trees space to reachmaturity.

Being produced in the UK from local, sustainable, FSC-accredited tim-ber and produced to the criteria of the environmental standard ISO14401, Sterling OSB can be employed with confidence when environ-mental credentials are demanded.NorbordTel 01786 812921 l www.norbord.co.uk

Innovation from Weinig on show at XylexpoXYLEXPO, one of the most tradi-tional trade fairs for the timbersector, was held in Milan be-tween 13-17 May. Weinig was inattendance, sharing a 500 m2

stand with Holz-Her to drive for-ward the group’s two brandstrategy.

Linked production was underthe spotlight in the solid woodsegment. Weinig now offers acommunication platform for bothprofiling and window productionfrom the product idea to the fin-ished workpiece. For derived tim-ber products specialist Holz-Her,the Evolution vertical CNC pro-cessing centre is claimed to setnew standards in its class. Thecost-effective Glu Jet glue applica-tion system for edge banding ma-chines also proved highly popular.

“It finally felt like a trade fairagain,” says Klaus Müller, head ofmarketing and communication insummary of Xylexpo 2014. Afterthe internal squabbles of recentyears, the trade fair gave an im-pression of stability and drewlarger crowds than anticipated de-spite the continued weakness inthe Italian economy.

On the Weinig stand, the notice-

ably high proportion of interna-tional professional visitors (60%)underlined the trade fair’s statusfor customers from Southern Eu-rope as well as the far reaches ofEastern Europe and Asia.

Although deals were againbelow expectations, Weinig be-lieves that the worst of the stormin Milan has passed. “Willingnessto invest has returned in manycountries,” observes CEO Wolfgang

Pöschle with cautions optimism.Amidst a buoyant atmosphere

on the stand, Weinig was able toimpress as a complete provider forprofiling, pre-cutting and windowmanufacturing.

Large companies are increas-ingly seeking complete solutionsfrom a single source and viewWeinig as a highly competentpartner to implement their de-manding projects.

Such customers are also attach-ing ever more importance to theservice sector, which has alwaysbeen a priority for Weinig and isassociated with the Weinig brandworldwide.Michael Weinig (UK) LtdTel 01235 557600

Brilliant Kündig sander for Hi-tec JoineryHI-TEC Joinery was established in June 2002, for the productionand supply of certificated fire doors, linings and screens, all tothe commercial markets. Quickly outgrowing its first site, thecompany has twice moved to larger premises, most recently in2012. The company supplies doors and screens to schools, uni-versities and colleges; hospitals, care homes and surgeries; aswell as refurbished offices or new premises for blue chip com-panies. The fire doors are certified under the BM TRADA QMarkscheme and are tested to BS 476:Part 22 Fire Doors.

As part of his programme of investing in the best machinery todo the job, company owner Ian Matthews recently purchased a Bril-liant-2 1350 REd-L sander from Kündig, through Southamptondealer Sawtec, which was delivered and commissioned in March2014.

As a growing company, Ian explained that his aim is to reduce hisdependence on outsourcing by bringing more processes in house, making the company more self-sufficient. This is an ongoing process, and as such further investment is expected in the future. The choiceof the Brilliant-2 exemplifies Ian’s attitude: although at present it isused for general sanding, Ian selected the “L” option where “L” standsfor Lacquer, meaning that he has the capability to sand veneered and lac-quered doors as well, as his business continues to develop.

Hi-tec doors are available in a range of veneers, including Walnut,Cherry, Maple, Beech, Oak, Ash, Koto, Eucalyptus and Sapele, and thecompany supplies a full range of lami-nate faces from all the main manufac-turers, including Formica and Polyrey, sothe ability to work with these materialsin the future was important to Ian.

Ian investigated four different ma-chines, and settled on the Kündig for avariety of reasons. He has a long stand-ing relationship with Sawtec, which pro-vides the company’s saws and cuttersfor the CNC machinery. Ian also appreci-ated Kündig’s quality: “Because they area specialist in the field, all they do issanding: they were the best on the mar-ket,” Ian told PW&SS.

Ian added, “I like to look at the ma-chines we are considering being made, and I also like to have contact with thepeople doing the manufacturing.”

To this end, says Carl O’Meara ofKündig Ltd, “We took Ian for a tour of theKündig factory in Switzerland to seewhat I believe to be the largest static dis-

play of sanding machinery in different configurations (and all available fordemonstration purposes), along with machines in production and themanufacture of the sanding belts.” According to Ian, this tour helped in-fluence his decision to purchase the Kündig sander.

When asked, Ian said he would defi-nitely recommend the sander, citing theimproved quality of finish as well as thegreater control that he has now that hemanufactures in-house.

The sander selected by Ian was atwin-belt machine configured with aroller and an electronic sanding pad andlacquer options for solid wood, veneersand lacquer. A constant passline ma-chine, where the sanding group raisesand lowers to the desired thicknessrather than adjusting the height of theworktable, the machine has a standardworking height of 3-200 mm and aworking width of 1,350 mm: the Bril-liant-2 is also available with a workingwidth of 1,100 mm and 1,600 mm, and awide variety of head configurations areavailable. The full Brilliant range offersfrom one to four working heads, gener-ally with the final head being “oblique”:a Kündig feature believed to be unique

which reduces oscillation marks and thereby improves the qualityof the final workpiece. Optional foldaway infeed and outfeed tablesare also available with this range.

Brian Bourne of Southampton authorised dealer, Sawtec, com-mented: “I had no doubt that the best machine for Ian would be aKündig. The demonstration in Switzerland represented a comprehen-sive range and their knowledge of the machinery with the potentialapplications is unprecedented. Our visit confirmed that the Brilliant-21350 REd-L would not only meet Ian’s exacting standards, but also hasthe capabilities to help him exceed his exceptional quality.”

The growth that Hi-tec Joinery has seen in the past speaks of at-tention to detail as well as a focus on quality, and this is where aKündig sander is a good fit for the company.

As Carl O’Meara summed up: “We are delighted to welcome Ian asone of our latest customers and for his recognition that at Kündigwe are constantly striving to be the best at what we do. EXHIBITION Plinths is makinguse of Medite’s Premier MDFpanel in the creation of itsplinths and bespoke items suchas display cabinets. The com-pany, which manufactures theproducts at its workshop inAxbridge in Somerset, selected

Medite for its reliability andhigh quality.

As what is believed to be theUK’s premier plinth maker, Exhibi-tion Plinths’ products are suppliedto museums, exhibitions, retail, television, galleries, artists, photoshoots and sporting events. As

well as a standard range ofwhite matt or satin-sprayedexhibition art plinths, thecompany can also providecustom-made products too, meeting specific size andcolour requirements. Theplinths are available for pur-chase or hire.

Having started work withMedite back in 2008, Exhi-bition Plinths now regularlyuses Medite Premier in the12 mm option.

Produced using superiorwood refining technologyand specially designedresins, Medite Premier MDFfeatures excellent faceproperties making it suit-able for application of thethinnest laminates and sur-face coatings.

For manufacturers suchas Exhibition Plinths, consis-

tency of quality and thickness, aswell as reduced tool wear are alsoimportant factors. The materialhas weight advantages, too, mak-ing it even more flexible for arange of installation and tempo-rary design possibilities.

Richard Williams at ExhibitionPlinths commented: “We are ex-tremely pleased with the MediteMDF product. When spraying itgives a great surface to start from,is incredibly flat and shows very lit-tle, if any, surface texture. Whenmachining we create a lot of lock

mitre joints and for this purposeMedite is the best.

“It machines beautifully and evenat the core of the MDF it is strong, giving a clean-cut lock mitre joint. Ihave tried other manufacturers butnothing matches the core boardstrength that Medite MDF offers.”

Production doubledAN AXYZ CNC router supplied by AXYZ International has helpeddouble the production capacity of West Midlands-based Porter &Woodman.

The company is a major user of wood, primarily plywood and MDF, fora diverse range of pro ducts distributed by the various business opera-tions within the Porter & Woodman Group. These include wooden boxesand crates for packaging high-quality wine and hamper gifts and point-of-sale and signage products, including chalkboards, blackboards, A-boards, shop fitting units and menu and poster holders.

The AXYZ 4010 CNC router recently installed supplements an AXYZ ma-chine purchased three years ago. The router is part of phase one of a£100,000 investment programme that has enabled additional staff to beemployed and fuelled growth by the introduction of new business. This, inturn, has led to the requirement for a second phase of investment that willsee the addition of a third warehouse to enhance the group’s packagingand distribution capabilities whilst enabling more staff to be employed.

Sales and marketing director at Porter & Woodman Group, Mike Hodgetts, said: “We are delighted with the new router and how it has helped double ourproduction capacity. Towards the end of last year we experienced a bottle-neck in production. This has now been comprehensively resolved with in-stallation of the AXYZ 4010 machine and has enabled us to keep up to speedon existing work whilst securing new business with confidence.”

Manager of the CNC Machining Shop, Colin Inchley, added: “I amthrilled with the new machine and how it has helped increase our pro-duction capacity. It is much quicker and more efficient but perhaps ofgreater significance it has assisted the group’s expansion and securednew jobs. The addition of the 4010 router means we can split the work-flow between the two machines to ensure that at no time either is tied upon a specific job, leading to guaranteed delivery on time to meet cus-tomers’ requirements.”

The AXYZ 4010 router is part of the 4000 Series that is recognised asone of the most popular routing, cutting and drilling solutions for woodprocessing currently available. It provides a work area width of 1,524 mmand lengths starting at 1,220 mm, with incremental increases of 610 mm.

The machine can handle materials in excess of four feet wide by virtuallyany length, while the 150 mm gantry clearance will accommodate thickersubstrates.

The AXYZ 4010 router installed at Porter & Woodman is supported byArtCAM Express design and production software. The router incorporatesa seven-tool Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facility and is used to cut out fre-quently complex shapes and process wooden sheets. In common with allAXYZ routers, however, the machine can be supplied with a host of op-tional production enhancements. Most recently, these have included newservo drives and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system featuringmultiple gear teeth. These production features are supplemented with thelatest A2MC Smart Console that eliminates ‘bounce’ and vibration causedby sudden acceleration or deceleration, while the AXYZ Auto Zone Man-agement System provides a greatly improved material hold-down capa-bility as well as reducing or eliminating material wastage and machinedowntime caused by incorrectly set vacuum valves.Porter & WoodmanTel 01384 445844 l www.porterandwoodmangroup.co.ukAXYZ InternationalTel 01902 375600 l www.axyz.com

DESIGN & INNOVATION

Innovation in Design at Decorative Panels Lamination LtdINNOVATION in design is always at the forefront of Decorative Panels’ minds withcontinual development in the latest surface textures and finishes.

Decorative Panels Group Design Director, Julian Tatham, reports on the company’sexciting developments that are ready to sample into the market.

“Working closely with our printing partners we have developed a wide range of 3Ddesigns featuring the latest in textured surface development. The surface creates apremium look, with superb print quality but best of all it makes you want to reach out andtouch it to achieve the full sensory experience. It is so authentic that this collection ofdesigns not only looks like, but now also feels like the real thing — natural wood products.

“The range consists of nine designs offering a broad spectrum of tonal shades andsurface textures, modern and on trend designs suitable for a wide range of markets.

“White woodgrain is a clean bright design, the surface texture creates intrinsic interestand adds character to the simplest of décors.

“Katthult is a furniture décor that epitomises the current trend for Scandinavian design.Bright, light and full of life with an abundant use of colour that can be appreciated to

the full when viewedalongside natural tones.

“With gentle planking,an open and structuredpore and small cut flowerswhich together create a remarkable overall appearance for our next design, Redgate.Redgate has a strong structure that is curiously calm and soft.

“Iconic Beech brings new life to this recently overlooked design. Full of life with anatural fine balance and, of course, superbly tactile.

“Nash Oak is a very different and special design, nothing like the ones we know.Correspondingly lively and natural, it has a mellow, warm and homely used look.

“Strong in expression with a distinctive structure, Nelson has a grey-whitish pore anda gold-bronze hue to the overtone, allowing infinite toning with trend colours.

“Bobs Pine brings the look of driftwood to the market, textured and sculptured by theelements, roughly honedusing basic tools withmasses of character.

“Maxim Rich is a real eyecatcher. A mixture ofelegant graining enhancedby the darker lines gives

this design real substance and presence reinforced by its power when used side by sidewith a single colour.

“Maxim Dark completes the full palate of colours and surface textures. The 3D rangethat we now have available to sample opens opportunities in design like never before.”

Julian goes on to expand on the latest uni-colour offering that Decorative PanelsLamination has ready to launch.

“All woodgrains are now developed to be used with uni-colours, they must contrast, compliment, co-ordinate and create a harmonious combination. The use of unicolours isevolving and is becoming enormously important within furniture and interior design.

To this end we are continu-ously looking to updateour range of unicolours, the latest products readyto launch from DPL are,Ruby Red, Electric Blue, Petrol Blue, Duck Egg Blue, Lime Wash, Shaded White, VirginiaGrey, Moon Grey & Praline. Colours that compliment and work well with our stock colourssuch as Sand Beige, Dakar, Mussel, Cashmere and Alabaster plus, of course, many of thedesigns in our dp-décor and dp-specialist ranges.”

Finally, Julian talks about a ground breaking development in acrylic surfaces. “We havefor many years sought to develop an alternative to traditional glass mirrors and nowbelieve we have succeeded. This acrylic surface is bonded to MDF in exactly the same wayas we process all other designs in our dp-specialist portfolio. An easy solution to thedeveloping trend for mirrored plinths in kitchens and mirrored fronts in bedrooms. Anadded advantage is that this material won’t crack or shatter so is ideal for situations wheresafety is a priority. Why not take a look?

“Book a visit to our brand new Marketing Suite where these and many more innovativeproducts are on permanent display — I am sure you will be amazed at what we have to offer.Keep looking out for our latest developments: new designs are coming out all the time.”

Seamless joints: laser edging from NeyEVERY manufacturer knows the im-portance of using high-quality con-sumables, but when it comes tochoosing your edging, what is im-portant to you? Does price dominateyour decision or does the assuranceof rigorous expert testing, greaterproduction quality and the promiseof a perfect finish score highly onyour wish list? Or is the importanceof a dependable supplier that canguarantee over 10 million linear me-tres of instock edging, ready for nextday delivery?

If your answer is “all of the above”,then Ney’s laser edging is certainlyworth a closer look.

Designed to create a seamless joint,Ney’s laser edging is coated at the timeof manufacturing to guarantee a per-fect colour match with no visible glueline. By replacing the conventionalglue, an edgebander with Laser, Hot Airor Plasma technology can be used tobond the edge and board together —flawlessly.

Manufactured from polypropylene,Ney’s laser edging has been created towithstand the harshest environmentalconditions.

Able to endure temperatures of –20to +75° C, testing has also seen edgeddoors and carcasses submerged intowater and used in rooms with an 85%moisture level to ensure the highest

heat, water and mois-ture resistance possible.

Available for nextday delivery in 13colours, includingwhite, cream andblack, Ney is set to ex-tend its range later thisyear to reflect new andexisting trends. Aspeedy quotation ser-vice and a minimumorder quantity of only50 metres is also avail-able — ideal for thesmalller manufacturer.

EDGEBANDERS & EDGEBANDING

THE GENISIS range of edge-banders is now available fromJ & C O’Meara, with special in-troductory prices available for alimited time.

Carl O’Meara comments, “For anumber of years we have beenlooking for a hot melt edgebanderthat can apply tapes up to 2 mm inthickness and, having attendednumerous international tradeshows, we became very aware ofthe vast array of machines avail-able from many producers aroundthe globe.

“To complement the estab-lished Genisis range of slidingtable panel saws, we had a num-ber of explicit requirements themachines had to meet, which in-cluded the build quality, the com-ponents used in construction, andbeing produced by a reputablemanufacturer.

“In short, we wanted a machine

that would offer that little bit morein all capabilities, yet be priced forthe small to medium sized furni-ture manufacturer.

“What we found was that assoon as 2 mm PVC was men-tioned, the majority of machinerymanufacturers started talkingabout machines with essentiallythe same specification, separateend saws, separate flush trim, sep-arate rounding cutters, etc, etc, making the machine very longand very expensive …

“But then we met a small butestablished machinery producerwho had developed a systemwhich allowed the flush trimmersto also do the corner roundingand also the end trimming.

“The advantage of this system isthat it makes the machine a lotmore compact, which in turn alsosubstantially reduces the price, whilst making the machine easier

to set up and making it lesscomplicated.”

Introducing the Genisis 412S(above), a machine which has atraditional heavy duty track feedand is considered ideal for tapesup to 2 mm in thickness. The ma-chine can end trim, flush trim, cor-ner round, has scrapers, solventcleaner and buffers, with all thisbeing in a machine less than 3.5 min length and currently being pro-moted at a special introductoryprice sure to attract attention.

For those looking for a fullerspecification, the Genisis 512S(below) has the same working sta-tions as the 412S but also benefitsfrom pre milling. The pre millingunit can allow manufacturers eas-ier planning of cutting lists by set-ting the pre mill to the samethickness of the tape being usedwhilst offering all the benefits ofremoving scorer marks or any

chipping that may occur when thepanel has been handled or, ofcourse, re-referencing the edge ifthe edge has been left overnight, absorbed moisture and becomeswollen.

The 512S also has the sameheavy duty track feed system butalso has the benefit of a colourtouch screen control along withpre heating of the edge, which as-sists in the bonding process, espe-cially in the cold winter months.

The Genisis 512S is just over 4.2m long and currently being pro-moted at a price that has to beseen to be believed (for a limitedtime only).

EDGEBANDERS & EDGEBANDING

TAKE A CLOSER look at EBM’s new KDP 117 SLK-P Airtronic and you will seeit is much more than an edgebander. The fully automatic machine, whichhas long been considered the German manufacturer’s flagship model,is the first edgebander in the range to include EBM’s first zero gluelinesolution, Airtronic.

Designed exclusively for woodworking machinery andconsumables supplier, Ney Ltd, the Airtronic system (whichcan also be added to the KDP 114 SLK-P, KDP 115 SLK-P andKDB 116 SLK-P models) eradicates unwanted glue lines, cre-ating a perfect transition from edgeband to panel and pro-

viding a hygienic, seamless join.Gerd Ney, managing director of Ney, explains:

“The new system will apply premium-coated edgingmaterials up to 3 mm thick and, whilst it is compatiblewith hot-melt glues, laser edges and PUR, it does notcome with the hefty price tag often associated with itslaser counterparts.

“Whilst the technology behind the design is complex, the con-cept is simple,” explains Gerd. “The machine heats compressed airthrough a fan equipped heater until it reaches its operational tempera-ture. It then irradiates through a nozzle to the inside of the premium-coated edge. It is this process which creates a perfectly seamless edgethat is highly heat, moisture and water resistant.”

With a heat-up time of just three minutes, the parameters of temper-ature, air pressure and speed are optimised for ease of use but can bechanged and saved via a touch screen console to work with different edg-ing materials.

All machines in the range feature an extendable panel support to pro-vide stability to large panels during processing and can be specified witha touch screen controller offering the operator the use of 32 pre-definedprogrammes, as well as a full diagnostic.

The flagship KDP 117 SLK-P is the most comprehensively equippededgebander in the EBM 110 range and includes pre-milling and infeedstations, end trimming, top and bottom rough trim, top and bottom ra-dius trim, corner rounding, edge scraping, glue scraping and buffing. Itwill work with components which have a minimum size of just 220 mmand will apply edging materials of up to 3 mm thick.

The addition of the Airtronic system brings increased productivity andproduction quality.

Gerd adds, “The EBM Airtronic system is a welcome addition to Ney’swoodworking machinery range and, with our new range of zero glue lineedging available in stock for next day delivery, Ney will always be a de-pendable partner for you to rely on.”Ney Ltd l Tel 024 7630 8100 l www.ney.co.uk

2014 sees the launch of 20 newdecors with seven unique struc-tures into Egger’s ZOOM collec-tion. Customers need look nofurther, Hranipex has the ans -wer — with seven structuresbringing its own challenges forABS edgebanding producers, noproblems as the structure hasbeen perfectly mimicked fromthe original MFC. For example,ST27 has perfect line structure,Hranipex has developed newcylinder heads to cater for thesenew and complex surfaces.

For example, the complexity ofST28 provides knots that perfectlymimic the characteristics of natu-ral wood giving it a more naturalfeel than the traditional porewoodgrain finishes currently avail-able on the market, while ST36contains a uniquely irregular pat-tern coupled with a finish that isvery similar to a brush effect com-monly associated with solid wood furniture. For an example of the diversity and options avail-able — Hranipex can offer standard dimensions of 22 mm x 0.45 mm, 22 mm x 1 mm, 22 mmx 2 mm, 42 mm x 2 mm and Jumbos in each thickness (0.45 mm-2 mm). The jumbo rolls allowmaximum flexibility for the customer meaning the only limitations will be imagination of thefurniture producer. Couple this with slitting from a jumbo roll in quantities as small as 100 mwith a short turnaround of just one week, the furniture producer can react quickly tocustomers’ requirements, with minimal disruption to production.

UK managing director, Alexandr Alexandrov, adds: “Hranipex is excited about this newtechnology and is looking forward to providing the market with edging that can ignite thesenew innovations and truly bring furniture to life.”

It is generally the norm with new innovations that manufacturers often like to producesample pieces to exhibit in their showroom or distribute among their clients, so it is alsoworth remembering that Hranipex offer “rewinding” which allows a producer to take verysmall quantities of a product without the need to purchase the entire roll. The rewindingservice is available throughout the Hranipex Express collection in quantities from just 1 m andstarts with a standard 24 hour delivery lifetime.

EDGEBANDERS & EDGEBANDING

FRONTLINE Cabinet Design Ltdis a well-established companywith over 35 years’ trading inthe kitchen and bedroom furni-ture industry. The business op-erates nationally from modernpremises in Nottingham, sup-plying mainly to the trade, pre-dominantly to showrooms, property development com -panies, holiday home specialistsand other supply and installa-tion outlets.

As well as standard kitchen cab-inets as featured in the company’son-line brochure, Frontline also of-fers a custom-made service, capa-ble of producing cabinets to anysize, height, width and depth andin any combination.

Utilising the latest CNC machin-ery and technology, Frontline pro-duces a high quality and variedrange of products and has the in-creased flexibility necessary to

meet all its customers’ various re-quirements. The company boastsa wealth of experience in the pro-duction of custom made units ofany size for both kitchens andbedrooms.

Frontline bedroom and kitchencabinets are manufactured to thehighest standards and feature 18mm high density MFC and 18 mmMFC backs. In addition to standardedging, for an additional 10 percent cost Frontline also offers 2mm edging to all front edges andinternal shelves.

With a focus on a Zero-glue-linefinish, as well as all the exposededges being lipped, the companyneeded to purchase a suitableedgebander and it was to FEN UK,based in Derby, that managing di-rector, Ian MacCall, turned whenthe decision was made to pur-chase a new edgebander.

Following comprehensive re-

search into the various models ofedgebanders currently on themarket, Ian MacCall chose theTwister edgebanding machinemanufactured by Austrian com-pany, Paul Ott GmbH and distrib-uted in the United Kingdom &Ireland by FEN UK, because hewanted to achieve the best possi-ble edge-banding quality. His re-search has certainly paid off, as Iannow finds that it is possible toachieve his aim of an entirely re-peatable zero-glue-line finish timeafter time.

“The finish simply blew usaway,” says Ian MacCall. “It by faroutweighed that produced by anyother edgebander we have seen.It was a very easy decision for us topurchase this machine.”

The Twister edgebander as pur-chased by Frontline Cabinet De-sign is considered ideal for quickprocessing from coiled material to

solid wood lippings. It is capableof applying edgings ranging from0.4 mm to 15 mm and these canbe applied to panel thicknesses upto 60 mm.

The machine was commis-sioned for installation at the end ofMarch and, now that it is up andrunning, it is not only used in themanufacture of acrylic high glossdoors, but is also used in the pro-duction of zero glue-line cabinetry.

“We are now producing thebest possible edge-banding qual-ity,” says Ian McCall.

The Twister is a heavy-duty ma-chine, and is designed to copewith high production environ-ments; all the time producing aconsistent industry leading finishat 20 m/min, straight out of themachine.

Standard equipment includes apre-milling unit and the patentedelectronically controlled Combi-Melt glue application system. Thechange-over to different types ofedgings is truly fully automatic, ensuring maximum repeatabilityat the same time.

Thanks to the spray finishingstations supplied by LCM, all thefinishing work is completed by themachine, without the need for anymanual cleaning of panel faces af-terwards.

Additionally there are diversesolutions available for all mannerof possible finishing treatments, including the new deep graindecors coming to the market.FEN UKTel 01332 516557Email [email protected]

THE MANUFACTURING arm of awell-known high street retailerhas purchased a wood wasteheater and shredder from WoodWaste Technology.

Sofa manufacturer, DFS, pur-chased the WT25A automaticwood waste heater at the end oflast year, for one of its wood millsin Alfreton, Derbyshire.

Management at the mill, wherethe wooden frames for DFS sofasare manufactured, realised a woodwaste heater could help them re-duce manufacturing costs. Thecompany was spending around£1,200 a week on skips for woodwaste, and around £30,000 per yearon gas heating for the workplace.

A colleague recommended DFSspeak with Wood Waste Technol-ogy, so Wood Mill Manager, EddieMcDermott, got in contact withKurt Cockroft, managing directorat Wood Waste Technology, to findout more.

Once the team at DFS realised

they would make a return on theinvestment in less than 12 months, they placed the order.

They also purchased a GAZ102shredder from Wood Waste Tech-nology, the UK official distributorfor Gross Apparatebau GmbH, aGerman manufacturer of depend-able, precision engineered shred-ders and briquetters.

The wood waste heater andshredder were installed just beforeChristmas, and the DFS team werevery impressed that Wood WasteTechnology was able to install theitems outside factory workinghours, to avoid any disruption tomanufacture.

Everyone at the mill is delightedwith the wood waste heater. EddieMcDermott says: “It’s absolutelybrilliant. I wish we had invested inone several years ago when wefirst heard about them. We are sav-ing a fortune on skips and heatingbills. The shredder gives us theflexibility of either burning the

wood waste or putting it in oursawdust skip (which gets emptiedfree of charge). The team at WoodWaste Technology has been excel-lent, from helping us make a deci-sion about buying the right heater, through to the installation andafter service. We cannot recom-mend them highly enough.”

Wood Waste Technology’s yearsof expertise in wood waste solu-tions have helped many compa-

nies reduce their waste disposaland heating costs. As well as offer-ing site survey, design, manufac-ture, installation and on-goingmaintenance for new units, thecompany also services all types ofwood waste heaters and suppliesgenuine spares.Wood Waste TechnologyTel 01785 250400www.woodwastetechnology.comwww.grossuk.co.uk

Dustraction centre stage at PinewoodDUSTRACTION won the contractto put a new face on waste at theshop floor that makes all thefilm-sets at Pinewood Studios.

Pinewood, at Iver Heath inBucks, is Britain’s Hollywood — thestudios that made the Bond Filmsfamous, and made Michael Caine astar, first as Harry Palmer in movieslike the Ipcress File and later TheItalian Job; Pinewood is also thehome of the Carry-On films.

The workshops at Pinewoodhelp make all the film sets formovies which, in the present day, include recently released Malefi-cent starring Angelina Jolie; manu-facturing in wood and wood-basedpanels for film-sets of movies likethese gets busier and busier.

Dustraction’s new installationservices many traditional wood-working machines from makers suchas Wadkin, that have been on thefloor at Pinewood doing the samework for years, together now withmore up-to-date names such as SCMthat share the work-load of today.

One of the most importantwatchwords at Pinewood, who-ever you are, is noise because film-ing is always going on somewhereon the million square feet of stag-

ing the film-makers are now work-ing with. Dustraction has been

tasked with reducing the soundsof dust extraction and disposal,

noise with which we, in this indus-try of ours, is eminently familiar tous but which is outlawed by thesound recording teams workingon today’s movies.

Because of the importance ofnoise abatement around the filmsets, Steve Matuska says all thenew filters and fans at Pinewoodare now located indoors and havebeen partitioned off inside a ded-icated new plant room. Systemscontain several fans and ductmains, each serving a separatearea of the shop floor, in a layoutthat enables individual areas to beshut down when not in use, mak-ing savings in power as well asnoise.

Dustraction has been workingon impeller noise generated bythe traditional paddle-blade styleof fan-set and Steve Matuska re-ports on big increases in efficiencyas well as lower noise output.Work done by the R&D Team in thedrawing office at Oadby has re-sulted in a new generation ofruggedly constructed wood-wastehandling fan-sets that retain theself-cleaning characteristics of theold paddle-blade styles but whichcan also now operate at muchhigher pressures with increasedefficiency as well as lower noise

The sounds of waste extraction at Pinewood Studios are now housed in a dedicated Plant Room atthe back of the Woodworking & Panel Mill where re-designed fan-sets operate at higher pressure andat lower noise output.

New ducting by Dustraction is now feeding many more machine stations at Pinewood Studios.

output due to improvements inblade design.

The new cyclofilters are Dustrax5s which between them handle atotal air volume of 11.3 m3/sec,which represents a spare volumecapacity of almost 50% for the fu-ture, which Pinewood’s manJonathan Ash says may be neededsooner rather than later! AtPinewood, Dustraction has now in-stalled two new indoor cyclo-filtersystems together with a number offansets; one cyclofilter handlesclean wood and the other plasticsand non-recyclables, each plantdischarging to externally mountedskips via closed loop cyclones.

The filter sleeves of Pinewood’snew reverse pulse cleaning sys-tems generate good cake-wasterelease without significant clothmovement and meet continuoususe requirements. Work done by the R&D Team in the drawing office at Oadby has resulted in a new generation ofruggedly constructed wood-waste handling fan-sets that retain the self-cleaning characteristicsof the old paddle-blade styles but which can also now operate at much higher pressures with in-creased efficiency as well as lower noise output due to improvements in blade design.

Work was completed on schedule, by the end of May 2014, by theefficient Dustraction team in a layout that serves many wood-working machines, from traditional models with years of servicebehind them to the latest modern machinery.

NEWS FROM THE BWF

BWF: working for British woodworkersIMPROVING the profitability ofjoinery manufacturing andshouting about timber prod-ucts’ green credentials were thekey areas of focus for the BritishWoodworking Federation (BWF)at this year’s Members Day.

Rupert Oliver from Forest indus-tries Intelligence gave the keynoteaddress on what he highlightedwas “true sustainability” in thewood sector. He urged joinery andwoodworking business to pro-mote their products more vigor-ously to head off the “single-issuegreenwash” from other materialsectors that risks skewing the de-bate on sustainable products.

Workshops and masterclassesfollowed, covering business guid-ance for joinery firms, the nextchapter of CPR and CE Marking, and technical issues such as win-dow thermal transmittance values.

The afternoon session beganwith a minute silence to note thepassing of former director andTechnical Committee Chairman ofthe BWF, Keith Clark. Keith made aphenomenal contribution to theBWF and the development of theFire Door Scheme over many yearsand was always a source of wisecounsel and dedicated support tothe BWF team. Various speakersthen spoke on a variety of issuesfacing those working with wood, including prospects for the future, chain of custody and training.

Concluding the event, Liz Malefrom the Construction LeadershipCouncil facilitated a ‘QuestionTime’ style debate addressing hottopics such as the new construc-tion industry fair payment charterand the proposed changes in theapprenticeship scheme.

The day was hailed by membersas informative and a great success. As one BWF member, Paul Kingfrom Vicaima, said: “It was an ex-cellent and well attended event, with good structure and relevanceto joinery businesses today.”l The BWF has appointed a newtechnical liaison manager to keep

on top of its technical advisory serv-ice for joiners and woodworkers.

Hannah Mansell joins the techni-cal team following former technicalofficer Chris Addison’s retirement.Hannah will be responsible for pro-viding both BWF members andnon-members with up-to-date, ac-curate technical advice and re-sponding to their queries.

With a wealth of experience oftimber and joinery manufacture,Hannah has worked for both largeand small companies and has ex-tensive knowledge of manufac-turing, developing and testing ofjoinery products and providingengineering support and projectmanagement solutions.

Hannah said: “Becoming amember of the BWF team is a fan-tastic opportunity as I am alreadyso familiar with what they do. I amlooking forward to dealing with allof the different queries and alsocontributing to the BWF’s manyschemes. I am also looking for-ward to developing my ownknowledge of the timber joineryindustry, as this is a fast moving

sector for both regulation changeand product development.”

As part of the role, Hannah willsupport Kevin Underwood, BWFtechnical director, in maintainingand updating technical guidanceand will carry out thermal per-formance calculations of windowsand doors for BWF members. Han-nah will also represent the BWF onvarious technical committees ad-vising on material and producttimber joinery specification.

Ian McIlwee, BWF chief execu-tive, said: “Hannah is a great addi-tion to the team. Her previous skill, knowledge and experience of thejoinery industry is an invaluableattribute for BWF members.

“Being able to offer membersthe most up-to-date and concisetechnical information is funda-mental to their business and welook forward to seeing this servicecontinue to grow.”l Major concerns are beingraised around environmental sus-tainability following the Queen’sSpeech, as timber industry groupsattack proposals in the Infrastruc-ture Bill which, they say, will putback the low carbon homesagenda by 10 years.

The UK Timber Industry Associ-ations’ Accord has written again toBuilding Regulations Minister,Stephen Williams MP, urgently ask-ing for embodied carbon to be re-instated into the zero carbonstandard for new homes.

Embodied carbon (reflectingthe energy that goes into makingbuilding materials) accounts forbetween 30-50% of the carbonimpact of a typical new buildingthrough its lifetime.

It follows a survey by Wood for

Good of 100 MPs earlier this year, which found that sustainable con-struction is the lowest priority fornew house building.

More than half (57) ranked theenvironmental credentials ofbuilding products and materialsamong their bottom two prioritiesfor the development of newhomes, while only a third (36%)placed the energy efficiency ofnew properties as being amongtheir top two concerns.

The BWF’s chief executive, IanMcIlwee, said: “The proposed regu-lations are a throwback to the dayswhen people assumed, completelywrongly, that more energy is con-sumed in running buildings than inconstructing them. We now knowthat reducing embodied energy inconstruction plays a huge part indecarbonisation. This move toallow developers and house-builders to ignore the true impactof future new homes on our carbonemissions leaves a damaging voidfor the best energy-saving buildingmaterials such as timber and takesus back to an age of single issuegreen-washing.”

The UK Timber Industry Associ-ations’ Accord is proposing to Gov-ernment that incentives are put inplace to encourage the selectionof inherently low carbon buildingmaterials while work continues todevelop a National Materials Stan-dard. They claim this could easilybe achieved in the Allowable So-lutions framework that is part ofthe zero carbon standard an-nounced in the Infrastructure Bill.BWFTel 0844 209 2610Email [email protected] appreciative audience at the BWF Members Day.

SPECIALIST fine art forwarderWilliams & Hill has bought twoStriebig Compact vertical panelsaws for its newly-opened ware-house near London’s HeathrowAirport.

The saws cut a variety of sheetmaterials, including plywood, OSBand Tri-Wall high performance cor-rugated board, needed for theconstruction of bespoke packingcases, plus foam and polystyreneused to line the interiors ifrequired.

They join a Striebig Econom IImodel which was purchasedshortly after the business wasformed in 2002.

Said the company’s warehousemanager, Martin Edwards: “Theoriginal Striebig has done a terrificjob and is a great piece of equip-ment.

“Before we recently opened ourfourth warehouse, needed to copewith an increase in business, I didlook at some other makes of saws.

“The fact that we have had noproblems with the Striebig ineleven years, coupled with the ex-cellent service we get from thesupplier, prompted us to buy twomore.”

The entry-level Compact modelwas chosen as best for the job

because every packing case thatis made needs to be a differentsize, with numerous repeat cutsunnecessary.

The two new Compacts are amodel 5220, with a cutting rangeof 4,600 x 2,200 x 60 mm, and a

larger model 6220, cutting 5,350 x2,200 x 60 mm.

All Compact series models com-bine exemplary ergonomics andhigh-quality visual appearancewith unmatched functionality.

They feature central support

and small parts support over theentire length of the saw, makingthe cutting of small workpiecesvery easy.

They are suitable for cuttingpractically all sheet materials, in-cluding MDF, plaster board, plas-tics and aluminium panels.

A scoring saw is available as anoption to prevent laminate paneledges from tearing out.

Each of the nine models inthe Compact series is nowavailable in an AV version incorpo-rating an automatic cut cycle facil-ity to make them even moreproductive.

This feature was previously onlyfound on Striebig’s more expen-sive models.

AS SCHELLING UK looks to thefuture, it has moved into larger,22,000 ft2 premises in Wetherby. As well as new office space, thenew building will provide roomto show and demonstrate bothnew machines and the increas-ingly popular used machines.

The building was officiallyopened by managing partner,Wolfgang Rohner, and managingdirector, Markus Freuis, on Thurs-day 17th April at an event to whichthe trade press were invited.

Mr Rohner commented that hehad visited Wetherby back in 1989to open Schelling UK’s first prem-ises, when it was the second of theeight daughter companies ofSchelling Anlagenbau GmbH ofAustria to be set up. He was “veryhappy to be back to open the newbuilding, and see how the com-pany has developed. Space hadbeen a problem to fulfil the plansthat Markus has for the future: webelieve in Markus and his team, and in their commitment to thecustomer and partnership withcustomers, whose loyalty makesus optimistic for the future.

“We will continue manufactur-ing reliable machinery for workingwith wood, aluminium and steel, and we have the right partner inthe UK to market and develop ourrange.”

Schelling UK’s Paul Rustomji ex-plained that Schelling UK openedin June 1989 with three engineers, and now has eight dedicated en-gineers and four office staff.

Markus Freuis described how, in

2010, the company noted that thedemand for used machines hadincreased, so a showroom wasleased in Sherburn-in-Elmet to testthe market. When this proved suc-cessful, the search began for a newpremises to purchase whichwould be large enough to house ashowroom: about four weeks later,Osborne House became available.

The company philosophy is toexcel at everything it does, so thecompany only sells second handmachines that it can provide a

service for: Schelling saws, orthose manufactured by com pa-nies that Schelling since acquired. An example is the 1984 Smid alu-minium saw (pictured below)which, until March 2014, was stillwith its Bolton-based originalowner in the aerospace industry, who replaced it with an fm8: an-other is the 1998 Schelling fm saw(below left) which had been in-stalled at an MDF manufacturer inWales until January 2014, when ithad been replaced by a new fh6.Already, one potential customer isinterested in the Smid machine, and two are interested in the fmsaw.

Sales of new machines are also

doing well. Markus explained thatsales are exceeding expectations, and this is expected to continue inthe current climate.

Already on display at the timeof our visit was an fh4, with an fk6and s45 due to join them. We weregiven a demonstration of the fh4:as illustrated opposite, when theboards are first loaded they arestamped with labels.

The board is then transportedto the blade, and the safety guardscome down: the operator can stillsee what is happening beyond theguards through the on screencamera feed.

Boards were cut lengthways, fed out, and then fed in again by

Schelling looks to the future as it moves

There is a waiting list for used machines such as these, brought intothe Schelling premises for renovation prior to resale. The only usedmachinery Schelling deals in is manufactured by Schelling, or bycompanies since acquired by Schelling, such as the Smid (right).

The fh4 on show at the opening is due to be joined by an fk6 and an s45.

the operator to be cut in the per-pendicular direction. The labelsare now centrally positioned oneach component, and the boards

can be stacked ready for their nextprocess.

The fh4 comes in a range ofsizes, from 3330 x 1600 mm to

5800 x 2200 mm, and is availablein both manual and automatic de-signs. The saw blade is 350 mm indiameter, and the scorer is 300mm in diameter. The feeder rate isup to 80 m/min forward (80m/min in reverse) and the sawfeed rate is up to 120 m/min for-ward (120 m/min reverse).

The emphasis Schelling placeson service is shown by the eight en-gineers employed by the company:plans of all machines installed in theUK are stored in the company andperhaps the largest desks in thebuildings are reserved for the tele-phone support engineers.

Perhaps the best tribute toSchelling UK was given byEric Simpson of Over 2 Hills Ltd,who had popped over un-expectedly from Huddersfield tocollect a spare part. He said, “IfSchelling were a football team, itwould be top of the premiership.

Everyone gives good service!”If you would like to visit the new

Schelling office and showroom foryourself, please do not hesitate toget in touch and ask for a demon-stration. There will also be a 25thAnniversary Party and CustomerOpen Day on Thursday 18 and Fri-day 19 September.Schelling UKTel 01937 [email protected]

The official opening was performed by managing partner,Wolfgang Rohner and managing director, Markus Freuis.

The back office includes a wide range of literature on the Schellingproduct range … including some back issues of PW&SS.

Boards cut in one direction emerge from the fh4, before being fedback by the operator to be cut in a perpendicular direction. Thelabels relating to the final part can be clearly seen.

Left, boards are fed towards the sawing position: above, as they arecut the safety curtain comes down, but the operator can still see whatis happening beyond them through the camera feed on his screen. There is also a back-up label printer at the operator’s position: thepieces coming through were labelled before the board was cut.

EXTENDING its market leading range of automatic saw sharpening machines, Vollmer has now launched its new Loroch PowerStar 850 forthe manufacture of metal cutting circular saw blades. The new PowerStar 850 is a flexible CNC controlled machine that has been developedfor the precision processing of saw blades from 400 to 850 mm diameter with flexibility and ease at the heart of the machine.

With a number of circular saw blade processing machines already in its armoury, this latest addition typifies the Vollmer brand by delivering a flex-ible machine for customers with high expectations. Not only is the new PowerStar 850 capableof machining HSS and segmental saw blades, it can also process friction and solid carbide saws.Utilising user friendly symbols on a large colour touch screen monitor, all settings are availableat a glance to enable changes to be made quickly and with confidence. With all rake and clear-ance angles for standard teeth readily available, the PowerStar 850 also indicates the optimalgrinding speed required.

Like the KSC series of machines, the PowerStar 850 incorporates a powerful direct drive forthe grinding spindle as well as an expandable shaft for accepting the grinding wheel. This ensuresthat performance loss and unwanted vibration are eliminated, thereby improving the service lifeof the grinding wheel whilst enhancing surface finishes.

Following the sharpening or re-toothing process, the PowerStar 850 can move the grindinghead and cooling nozzles automatically to commence the chamfering process. A key character-istic of the new machine is its ability to infinitely adjust the chamfer angle up to a maximum of45°. To start the process, the operator can rotate the electronic hand wheel to locate the grind-ing wheel in the tooth position.

As the benchmark in saw processing technology, the new Loroch PowerStar 850 from Vollmerincorporates a host of features as standard that include a motor driven diameter adjustment fa-cility for the saw blade, saw blade bracket at the point of grinding, semi-automatic saw bladechamfering and 45° angle cutting. Additionally, the PowerStar 850 includes an integrated andadjustable input station with large LCD-Touch screen and a complete coolant system that has a300 litre tank with a 6 bar high volume pressure pump.

For end users with more specific demands, the machine offers a variety of optional extras suchas Custom and Vario tooth shape geometries, a precision grinding facility to grind multiple bladesto the exact outside diameter and an external fine filter to extract HSS or carbide chips. Other op-tional extras include modification to accept oil coolant or emulsion and internet connection forremote diagnostics. The wide ranging list of standard options make the new PowerStar 850 whatis believed to be the most comprehensive and capable machine in its class.Vollmer UK LtdTel 0115 949 1040 l Email [email protected] l www.vollmer-group.com

Vollmer takes saw blade processing to the stars

SUPPLIERS of holiday homes to the UK and European markets, Eu-ropa Caravans, aims to give all its customers value-for-money cara-vans manufactured to the highest standards. In order to do this, thecompany needs to have the right equipment on the factory floor.

Don Oades, one of the founders of Europa Caravans, explains, “Weneeded to increase production and believed that this could be achievedby investing in a new beam saw. The existing Holzma beam saw hadserved us well but was becoming a bottle neck in our production. Sinceinvesting in that original saw, technology has moved on dramatically andso the time was right to invest in one of the latest models.

“Having dealt with Homag in the past, we knew that they were thecompany we wanted to procure our new saw from. We contacted JohnShepherd, a sales representative for Homag UK, to discuss our options.

“We agreed that the best approach would be to move our existing sawto work with ply materials and invest in a Holzma HPP 380 to carry out ourmelamine cutting.”

The HPP 380 is a compact, powerful saw which is both economical andversatile thanks to the higher saw blade projection and its 18 kW motor. The saw carriage consists of a heavy-duty steel structure with the mainsaw, scoring saw and central aligner.

It features an infinitely variable saw carriage speed and a scoring sawthat is easily adjusted from the control console. Holzma’s robust clampshold the material firmly but gently, positioning it accurately onto the cut-ting line.

The rugged pressure beam has a large-area pressure zone directly atthe cutting line reducing vibrations to a minimum and guaranteeing first-class clean cut quality. The electronically controlled program fence withclamps and precision guide has an electro- magnetic measuring systemwhich guarantees positioning accuracy of ± 0.1 mm. The special designof the Holzma clamps allows even minimal trim and dust cuts.

To shorten cycle times, Holzma has integrated a side aligner directlyinto the saw carriage. The patented device reduces cycle times by up to

25% in comparison to conventional systems.“When it came to the installation process of the machine,”

continues Mr Oades, “it went very smoothly. The Homag en-gineer was extremely knowledgeable and trained our staffonsite so they were confident not only to use it, but also toget the best out of it — he was brilliant.

“The HPP 380 is very simple to operate. In addition to thesaw, we purchased Homag software that was compatiblewith the existing programs we own. This made it much eas-ier to integrate it into our factory process.

“Having the new beam saw has improved the quality of ourproducts and increased our throughput. We knew what per-formance we were expecting from the saw, but the Holzmahas far exceeded those expectations. It is faster and we cannow process more products in a day than ever before whilstat the same time maintaining our high quality standards.”Homag UK LtdTel 01332 856500 l www.homag-uk.co.uk

SAWS IN ALL SHAPES & SIZES

BASED in London, England, Tar-get Stati-CAL is a specialiststructural contractor.

As well as undertaking pilingand masonry repair and reinforce-ment, the company provides andinstalls modular, prefabricated ex-tensions, typically to housingassociations.

Steel-framed, brick-clad andcompliant with all building regu-lations, the company’s modularextensions are a quick, high-qual-ity and cost-effective solution forhousing associations needing toupgrade their housing stock.

A good example is one of thecompany’s current projects in Sut-ton, Surrey, UK, to replace terracedhouses’ bathroom extensions. In-stalled some 30 to 40 years ago,the existing bathrooms were tim-ber framed units and are now ripefor replacement. The old bath-rooms are lifted out from the rearof the properties, and the newunits lifted in from the steel.

Target Stati-CAL director, DavidHall, noted: “To minimise disrup-tion to the residents, we have tocomplete the connection work oneach house within one day.” The company’s modular extensions are fully built and finished in the factory, ready for installation and delivery. They arecraned into place, services are connected, protective skirts are installed around their bases, and their connecting doorways are then finished to thecorrect sizes for the various houses.

The skirt is made from recycled plastic board and the doorway finishing is undertaken with high pressure laminated MDF. “It’s essential we haveenough of these materials on site,” David observed, “or the entire opera-tion could grind to a halt.”

Rather than keep 8 ft x 4 ft sheets on site, consuming valuable storagespace and necessitating on-site cutting, David decided to store incom-ing sheets at the company’s facility in Newbury, Berkshire, England, cut-ting them into slightly oversized strips there and shipping these inbatches to the site in Sutton. There they can be quickly and easilytrimmed, with a hand-held circular saw, to the precise sizes required foreach installation.

Searching online for a suitable second hand vertical panel saw for theNewbury facility, David came across Sagetech’s Koolkut range. “TheKoolkut KK12 caught my eye straight away,” said David. “It is compact, handles the eight-by-four boards we need to cut, has a handy option (therip-cut-gauge) for making quick and easy repeat cuts and, critically forus, uses a standard single-phase 13 amp supply.”

The KK12 is the smallest machine in the Koolkut KK range, which alsoincludes the KK16, for sheets up to 10 ft x 5 ft (3.1 m x 1.6 m) and the KK21,which handles sheets of up to 3.1 m x 2.1 m. All Koolkuts offer plungeand bevel capability, quick stops for rapid, precise dimensioning and mid-height supports for smaller workpieces. They form part of Sagetech’slarger range of vertical panel saws, alongside the Zapkut family ofportable and moving column units. The company offers what is probablythe widest range available for everything from occasional use throughto medium-heavy industry workloads.

With tool versatility a key requirement for many operators, “What willit cut?” is a question frequently asked of Sagetech. In addition to thefaced MDF and recycled plastic sheets that Target Stati-CAL are cutting,Koolkuts will also cut any wood or wood-based sheet, as well as acrylics, cement board, solid aluminium and aluminium composites.

Installed in December 2013, the Koolkut KK12 is an essential in TargetStati-CAL’s toolbox. “Without it, we couldn’t operate in the slick, efficientway we do,” David noted. “The Koolkut allows us to keep the site toppedup with just the right amount of sized sheet material, just in time, to allowus to maintain the required installation rate, which can be up to eightunits a week. I’d recommend it to anyone with low-to-medium sheet cut-ting workloads. It’s a good, honest, value-for-money wall saw.”Sagetech l Tel 0118 970 1950Email [email protected] l www.sagetech.co.uk

EXHIBITIONS

THE W SERIES of shows, which are the biennial national exhibition forthe joinery and furniture industries, are to be at the NEC Birminghamuntil at least 2018. The show’s organiser, Huddlestone, has announcedthat a tenancy contracthas been signed withNEC to hold the 2016and 2018 exhibitions atthis central venue.

John Smith-Bodden,managing director ofHuddlestone, said: “Weare delighted to have se-cured the future of theshow at the NEC. The de-velopment and expan-sion programme for theNEC is impressive and canonly benefit from furtherprivate capital which willbe associated with itsown re-structuring. It isthe premier UK locationfor trade exhibitions andobviously enjoys threemajor benefits for a major trade show: location, location, location.”

That point can be easily appreciated. Exhibitors and visitors alike pre-fer a central location, well connected by road links. Of course, with railand air terminals also alongside the Birmingham venue, its position is fur-ther advantaged.

Were other venues considered as the future home of the W series ofshows? John Smith-Bodden said: “You’d expect us to have fully investi-gated the alternatives. In the case of the W shows, however, other possi-

bilities were either far less convenient or lacked the internationally un-derstood profile of the NEC for trade shows.

“We also have to consider that the W show is now amongst the largestUK trade events and hasadditional complexitiesdue to large quantities ofrunning equipment.

“Most venues lack thesize, logistics or experi-ence to deal with that.”

The exhibition calen-dar in the UK becomes es-pecially crowded in theautumn slots and de-mand for space meansthat an event the size of aW exhibition needs tolook ahead to maintain itsposition. Supported bythe Eumabois federation, the body which co-ordi-nates national exhibitionson a global basis, it is im-portant that the autumn

timing is maintained — in addition, of course, this has been the under-stood timing of the exhibition for some 40 years.

With an impressive floor plan already in place for 2014, there is a lot ofinterest in this year’s show. Major names are still being added and confi-dence in the industry is reflected by boldness in the exhibition.

W14 exhibition director, Angela McGowan, said: “W14 will be aboutgiving the exhibitors every opportunity to express their brand throughtheir presence on the floor.

“Investment in stands andspace by exhibitors is higher thanfor many years and our job is tokeep it simple and encourage theinteraction of exhibitors and visit-ing manufacturers to take place.

“That is the true strength ofthe W shows: all across the flooryou see the industry actually en-gaged with each other, and doingbusiness.”

Huddlestone has plans to growthe W shows further and sees theNEC as the right place for expan-sion. Major brands such as Blumexhibiting at W14 is a clear signalof the growth in components andmaterials at the show but machin-ery space for new or returningsuppliers is also in demand.

With the Timber Expo exhibi-tion and conference event in an

adjoining hall this year, JohnSmith-Bodden welcomes the co-location concept.

“We plan to encourage otherrelevant events to join us at theNEC for 2016 onwards — the wayforward for events is to offer thebest possible value to visitors.

“That means a lot to see, seriousbusiness benefits and making it alleasy to do.

“That is why the NEC and the W

exhibitions are natural partners,”he concluded.

Meanwhile W14 continues togather strength with every day.The organisers say they expect toconfirm another raft of big nameexhibitors shortly. Register to visitW14 through the website.W14 ExhibitionTel 01629 530998Email [email protected]

SOFTWARE FOR DESIGNERS & MANUFACTURERS

MANUFACTURING curved com-ponents for unique seatingpods is a simple process for aleading joinery company, thanks to Alphacam program-ming five-axis toolpaths for itsHomag router.

Specialist Joinery Group saysthat creating the pods for theLakeside Shopping Centre in Essexwould take three times longerwithout Alphacam software, and itcould not be competitive. “Thepods involve considerable work, but the components can mainlybe cut in one set-up with Alpha-cam,” says technical manager, TerryDevlin.

As well as the Homag OptimatBOF 311, Alphacam also programsa CNC edging machine to put a 2mm PVC edge on a curve, and aHomag multi-bore. But it is thefive-axis capability that he findsthe most useful. “A growing num-ber of our projects call for five-axis

work, and we would have to sub-contract that part of the operationout if we did not have Alphacam.”

Operating with around 100 staffin 80,000 ft2 premises at Magherain Northern Ireland, the companyrecently celebrated its 25th an-niversary with a £3m expansionand commitment to create 30 newlocal jobs over the next threeyears.

Specialist Joinery Group worksthrough the construction sectormanufacturing high quality fittedfurniture and bespoke joineryitems. Marketing director, PaulaMcCloskey, explains that the prod-ucts include reception counters, feature and acoustic panelling, and a range of furniture forschools, universities, hotels, labo-ratories and healthcare.

With customers across the UKand Ireland, one contract involveddesigner items for luxury apart-ments in London priced between

£5m and £8m. Other work hasbeen for a number of hospitals, universities and colleges, Ex-change Tower in docklands, TheWorld Wildlife Fund, and theOlympic Village Legacy Project, where the company provided fur-niture for residences convertedfrom the athletes’ accommodation.

“We have won a number of con-tracts because of the five-axis ma-chining capability that Alphacamgives us, including The Guildhall inLondon. Very few companiescould have handled that particu-lar project because of the com-plexity of the design whichinvolved curved and profiledacoustic wall panels over severalfloors.

“Although an architect’s pencan create any sort of curve, it is adifferent story when it comes toactually machining it. Alphacam isparamount in enabling us to carryout five-axis machining within therequired tolerances.”

Terry Devlin agrees that Alpha-cam is vital for its manufacturingprocess. “Sometimes we have towork off a plan view, so we modelit and bring it into Alphacam …but normally customers send usjobs in DWG format, so we createour own shop drawings and startbreaking it down to see how we

are going to construct the project.Once it is in Alphacam we selectthe cutting tool, set the toolpathsand calculate the amount of ma-terial needed.

“There are two options with thecutting list: it goes down to themachine shop manager who getsthe parts ready and sends them tothe router, or we feed the cut listto the beam saw and the parts arecut there before going to therouter.” He says most jobs requirearound 20 per cent machining be-fore they can be assembled, andwith the high volume of work onthe shop floor the parts wouldtake too long to complete withoutAlphacam. And as material utilisa-tion is important to them, to avoidwastage, all nesting is donethrough Alphacam.

The Lakeside seating pods aremade from several individuallayers of MDF. Specialist JoineryGroup produces the assembledshell which is clad with Corian. Inaddition to the curves of each com-ponent, a void is created in the as-sembly to house lighting. “Basicallywe manufacture it as a jig so theCorian can be formed to the correctshape. Being able to machine it onfive-axes through Alphacam savesconsiderable time and manpower. The only alternative would be tolaminate it, and that would just betoo time-consuming.”

Specialist Joinery Group pro-cures a range of materials to man-ufacture its products from MDF tosolid walnut, it is all dependent onthe client’s specific requirements.

“Alphacam is important forrouting and multi-boring all typesof material that we use. It guaran-tees that everything is within thecorrect tolerance, which is espe-cially important for ceiling fea-tures and wall panelling. As theyare installed last, often after wallshave been painted, everything hasto fit together perfectly to ensurethere is no mess.”Specialist Joinery Groupwww.specialistjoinerygroup.co.ukAlphacamTel 0118 922 6677www.alphacam.com

SOFTWARE FOR DESIGNERS & MANUFACTURERS

THE LARGEST kitchen manufacturer in Ireland says itcould not produce the thousands of panels it does everyweek, without Cabinet Vision software.

While Cherrymore Kitchens & Bedrooms work from arange of standard units, everything is made to order off aplan, mainly for its sister retail company, Rite Price.

Operating out of 80,000 ft2 manufacturing premises inDonegal, Cherrymore uses Cabinet Vision to be 100 per centsure that the panels are cut exactly as stipulated on lists ofunits which come in from Rite Price as an XL file, with a CADdrawing for checking against.

Cherrymore co-owner and Head of Production, MartinMcLaughlin, says: “We input that information into CabinetVision, which produces the NC code for routing, as well as controlling theloading, boring and labelling on our SCM Accord machine, and optimisesour Holzma Beam Saw. As Rite Price invested in a specialist kitchen designsoftware before we installed Cabinet Vision last year, we only use the in-tegrated Screen-to-Machine module at the moment, to send accuratecode to the machines for cutting, boring and labelling the panels.Eventually we will use CabinetVision as our design package, too, producing photo rendereddrawings and cutlists.”

Machine operator JasonGallen is responsible for in-putting the lists which comprisethe size and style of the relevantRite Price base, sink and wallunits.

“We have all those units in ourlibrary, starting at 150 mm goingup to 1,200 mm. I manually dragand drop all the parts for theunits into the Cabinet Vision forthat job, and once the list’s com-plete the S2M Center createstoolpaths for all the differentparts. Then I optimise it to create the best possible nest, select the SCMor Holzma and run the program.”

Amongst the features of the Screen-to-Machine Ultimate module usedby Cherrymore are: control feeds & speed of tools by material; controlmaximum depth per pass of tools by material; ABC axis rotation; squareup and manage nest off-fall (with nesting); define multiple sheet sizes

per material. “When the SCM arrived, before we installed Cabinet Visiononto it, I used to manually put every single part on, and some units haveten parts. It took at least two hours — but it only takes ten minutes withCabinet Vision. It has completely revolutionised my job, and we couldn’tproduce the number of kitchens we do, without it.”

He says occasionally a compo-nent is called for that is off-stan-dard. “As Cabinet Vision isparametric, it is so easy to ma-nipulate an existing panel. If I ex-pand or shrink one aspect, itautomatically moves everythingelse, so I don’t have to worryabout handle and hinge holesbeing in the wrong place.”

A point echoed by MartinMcLaughlin. “It’s so flexible. Aparametric program is vital forthe type of business we are in. Itspeeds up production and elim-inates human error, both ofwhich are extremely importantto us.”

As well as driving the two ma-chines, he makes full use of Cab-

inet Vision’s facility to produce a list of sheets prior to starting machining.“It means we can prepare our sheets of two-sided laminate chipboard orMDF on a stack for either machine.

“Each unit is manufactured from a dense 18 mm board, which, whencoupled with glued and dowelled joints, makes for one of the strongestcarcases available.”

And the labelling capability ensures that every panel is clearly identi-fied with the part number, customer’s details, colour and size.

He says the fact that Cabinet Vision’s support team spent setting every-thing up accurately is paying dividends now. “You can have the best soft-ware in the world, but it is nothing without the right support. In particularCabinet Vision undertook a lot of work in optimising the Holzma and set-ting up the labelling system. Everything works perfectly, and is well worththe effort put in when we first installed it.

“We are 100 per cent confident that Cabinet Vision will produce thepanels exactly as they are detailed on the unit list produced in the spe-cialist design software by Rite Price’s showroom staff.”

Cherrymore’s manufacturing operation has been established foraround 12 years, producing a wide range of traditional and contemporarystyles at competitive prices; from modern flat and slab doors, to the clas-sic shaker and solid timbers.

MAJOR enhancements to 5-axistoolpath functionality, alongwith the ability to automaticallyconvert 2D design data to a 3Dmodel, are included in the latestrelease of Alphacam, part of theVero Software product port-folio. Updates to the FeatureExtraction function also bringadditional benefits to users.

The Alphacam 2014 R2 updateincludes several new and en-hanced features which continueto demonstrate why Alphacamleads the way in improving pro-ductivity and flexibility for manu-facturers, increasing theirprofitability.

Alphacam general manager,Nick Spurrett, says: “There are anumber of exciting new develop-ments in Alphacam 2014 R2, in-cluding the ability to optimisefive-axis toolpaths to a specificmachine configuration, and PartModeler has been enhanced toconvert DXF and DWG 2D draw-ings into 3D models.”

Amongst the new functionalityand enhancements:5-Axis Toolpath Optimiser: Using2014 R2, operators can optimise 5-axis toolpaths to their specific ma-chine configuration and rotationalaxis limits. As this is carried out atan operational level, any changesto the toolpath data or machineconfiguration will be highlightedand the operation can be easilyupdated and re-optimised. Theenhanced tooling Machine Anglesare readily available as Element at-tributes for post processing andalso driving the new simulator. Thecomplete operation is analysedagainst the user settings, and

where required the toolpath willbe automatically split into sepa-rate sections, with options tomaintain Feed Down and LeadIn/Out settings on the modifiedtoolpaths.Part Modeler: This now includesthe ability to convert an importedDXF or DWG 2D drawing into a 3Dmodel automatically. It works bysimply defining the relevant viewsfrom a 2D file by using intelligentloop selection or tracing aroundthe profile of the part. Using acombination of correctly orientedprofile projections, a 3D solidmodel can be automatically con-structed, ready for manufacture.Feature Extraction: Notable en-hancements include a complete

redesign of the Automatic FeatureExtraction dialog with improvedlayout, images for each option andcontext sensitive help. In addition, partial hole extraction is possibleby specifying a partial angle rangeand small hole chamfers can nowbe extracted with options on theFeature Configuration dialog toset the preferred tool directionsfor internal and external paths. Finally, all feature extraction com-mands will extract to the currentworkplane if possible, and theactive user layer.Clamps and Fixtures: Enhance-ments enable more exact posi-tioning and greater controlagainst collisions as containmentand positional geometry can now

be set to better position clampsand fixtures against other data.Clamp moves can now be con-trolled using the new “Can Pop Up”option with improved Post Proces-sor support.Nesting: Alphacam 2014 R2 in-cludes a number of significant en-hancements to the nestingcapabilities. The three major de-velopments to this are Kit Nesting, where each part in the nest can beassigned a kit number, so that kitsof parts can be nested to the samesheet; setting a No Nest Zone to asheet which will apply to all sub-sequent sheets; and the New Nest-ing Special Function (unique tothe Vero Group Nester) which pre-vents nesting into part apertures. This release also includes a newBridged Nesting option which willanalyse the nest to determine theouter Toolpath and bridge theparts together, keeping the tooldown in the material whilst all theparts are cut out, thus minimisingon tool lifts and re-positions.BTL Translator: New functionalitynow allows components to beproduced which are suitable fornesting, and includes the optionto create a CSV file for allprocessed nesting parts, whichcan be loaded directly into CAD orCAM, and Cabinet Door Manufac-turing. In addition, there are sev-eral new processes, including aNotch/Rabbet, House, House Mor-tise and Dovetail Tenon, all stan-dard joint and groove processesfor the woodworking industry.AlphacamTel 0118 922 6677www.alphacam.com

Joinerysoft helps Beechhall Joinery tripleturnover in a yearJAMES Gilchrist, owner ofBeechhall Joinery, bought Join-erysoft’s Joinery ManagementSoftware (JMS) one year agoand since then has more thantripled his turnover and in-creased his production capacity.

James purchased a five headmoulder after JMS because he waswinning so much work that it washis next step to improve capacity.

He says, “As well as JMS our newfive head computerised moulderhas played a part, but I would saythat JMS alongside the newmoulder is definitely the biggestpart of it.”

James viewed JMS on a numberof occasions at woodworkingshows. However, it was not untilhe was recommended it by an-other joiner that he decided topurchase it. He says: “If a joinerwho I knew was not computer lit-erate could use JMS successfullyfor his small production set up,then I knew it would help mylarger scale production.”

Fed up with manually produc-ing delivery notes and glass tick-ets, James realised that Joinerysoftprovided a complete package in-cluding initial survey, drawings, quotations, customer confirma-tion, cutting lists, timber, glass &fittings ordering, delivery notesand invoicing.

The added bonus whichclinched the matter was Join-erysoft’s ability to provide a com-plete factory production control

facility including u-valuecalculation and CE labelprinting. He says, “I inves-tigated a number of dif-ferent solutions to complywith CE marking regula-tions but they were all ex-pensive and only Joinery-soft provided a completeproduction solution.”

James Gilchrist has join-ery in his blood with fivejoinery businesses amongsthis family. From the age ofnine he was helping out athis father’s factory so it is nowonder that he became ajoiner himself. Based in WalthamAbbey, East London, James startedhis own business in 2007 and nowemploys 20 joiners manufacturingbox sash windows, all types of doorincluding bifolds, casement andstorm proof windows.

His 10,000 ft2 production work-shop includes a glass facility thatsupplies not only his own glass re-quirements but also supplies glassfor other joinery companies, utilis-ing three tonnes of toughenedglass to produce around 600double glazed units each week. The company typically manufac-tures 40-100 timber box sashesper week. James has also juststarted a PVC division supplyingand installing PVC windows tocomplement the timber joinery heproduces.

Prior to JMS, Beechhall Joinerywas more advanced than most in

providing drawings for clients butthe lack of paper trail and manualcreation of delivery notes andglass ordering created a time con-suming process. James adds, “Pre-viously I would not have botheredupdating our prices if the surveyshowed the initial sizes to be in-correct, and if a customer lost thefittings on site I would not be ableto prove that they had receivedthem. Since having JMS I can eas-ily provide an updated quotationafter the survey, and deliverynotes signed by the customerallow me to charge extra for re-placement items, protecting myprofit margins.”

Utilising JMS for not only theirown joinery production but alsofor glass manufacturing, Jamessays, “I have found JMS very easyto use; the two days’ training wasenough and if there is anything I

don’t understand, Joinerysoft areat the end of the phone.”

He adds, “We are not computergeniuses here — the training wasexcellent and provided by a timeserved joiner, which meant that Icould speak to him in joineryterms and he was able to relatethe software to my business inways I could understand.”

James says, “JMS saves us timeand money. We do not have tomanually produce paperwork, human error is removed frommanual calculations and the de-tailed paper trail allows us to orderglass and fittings ahead, allowingus to prefit ready for installation.”He adds, “Ordering is streamlined, removing guess work from ordersand ensuring there is no waste.JMS tells me everything I need in-cluding how many glass beadsand accurate lead weights.” Beech-hall even has its own lead smelttoo, which means it can produceeverything in house, only buyingin raw sawn material.

James believes that this growthis due to JMS giving him full pro-duction control from raw materialright through to installation. Hesays, “Every joinery shop shouldhave JMS if it wants to makemoney.
