FEIN has introduced the Starlockmounting system across its en-tire oscillating power tool range, enabling accessory changes inless than three seconds.

Central to the improved per-formance is the greater powertransfer between machine and ac-cessory, which the Starlockmounting system makes possible. Its recessed, three-dimensional fit-ting provides a perfect bind and,as a result, the new FEIN oscillatorsdeliver up to 45 per cent morework progress than their prede-cessor models. What is more, when Starlock accessories areused on previous models of FEIN

oscillators, work progress can beincreased by 25 per cent, accord-ing to the company.

FEIN’s new oscillating machinesare available in 250 W (Multi -Talent), 350 W (MultiMaster) and450 W (SuperCut) power levels.

UK MANUFACTURER of quick-set box making machines, BCS,has recently installed a machin-ery line at its highest ever loca-tion — 4,000 metres above sealevel, in La Paz, Bolivia.

Artes Graficas Sagitario SRL isone of the largest printing com-panies in Bolivia. The family runbusiness prides itself on the qual-ity of print offered and continuallylooks for ways to improve the ser-vice it offers to customers.

As well as running offset print-ers the company has also diversi-fied into digital print and labelprinting. One area that it identifiedto improve is the quality of effi-ciency of packing the printed ma-terial prior to shipping. Each day’sproduction is different from thelast so having the correct size boxon hand was always an issue.Being the last operation in pro-duction and often being packedby hand proved costly and labourintensive, with best-fit boxes and

packaging having to be used. The acquisition of a complete

Autobox line (including flexoprint) and MultiNOVA gluer has al-lowed Sagitario to bring corru-gated box production in houseand control every aspect of thepackaging line. With the quick-setintuitive operation, even staff withno prior experience in box pro-duction can now simply producethe required quantity of correctsized boxes. Whether packingfolding cartons, posters, labels orbooks there is no need to buy vol-umes of stock boxes or pay highprice for small quantities. Sagitariohas the right box at the right timeat a moment’s notice.

Owner, Juan Carlos, says: “It is areally good investment. I can nowhave corrugated boxes when andhow I need them.”British Converting SolutionsTel 01525 379359Email [email protected]

BIESSE GROUP was one of theprotagonists at Acimall’s booth, the Italian woodworking ma-chinery and tool manufacturers’association, which for the firsttime was present at the inter-national furnishing exhibition inMilan.

With a space of 80 m2 the Asso-ciation gave visibility to its mem-bers at Salone Internazionale delMobile, testifying the willingnessof FerlegnoArredo — the “federa-tion hub” of Italy’s wood and furni-ture industry and organiser of thefair — to facilitate rapprochementamong all the actors of the supplychain.

It has always been a reason ofpride and prestige for BiesseGroup that many design master-pieces have been made withBiesse’s technologies, so much asthe “made with Biesse” has be-come a crucial asset of the com-pany’s communication strategy.

The blend of ‘wise’ industrialisa-tion and customisable processes

are also at the basis of the so-called 4th Industrial Revolutionthat Biesse will largely showcase atXylexpo 2016.

“This revolution, which we wantto render accessible to everyone, aims to bring together the highoutput numbers seen in the as-sembly chain with the tailor-madevalue of artisan production,” com-mented Raphaël Prati, marketingand communications director forBiesse Group.

“In a world where those whooffer quality and a personalisedtouch at increasingly low pricescome out on top, factories areturning digital: the machines com-municate amongst themselves viaautomation systems and inter-action software, and can “imagine”the product, simulate construc-tion and carry out tests before ithas ever been made.”

SINCE the commencement ofbusiness in 2001, South Wales-based Wilcare Wales has seenextraordinary year-on-yeargrowth, having operated ini-tially from a 500 ft2 factoryhousing just a handful of em-ployees to the present 30,000 ft2

facility with a staff of 50.The company has achieved vir-

tual market leadership with its bril-liantly designed and engineeredelectric rise and recline chairswhich meet all Class 1 medical de-vices requirements as defined bythe EC Directive 93/42 and whichare widely specified in the mobilitysector. The company is also CE reg-istered with the MHRA (Medicines& Healthcare Regulatory Agency).

Having earlier installed its ownwood mill incorporating routerssupplied by AXYZ International, the company has subsequentlyexpanded its production capacityto accommodate further third-party requirements and most re-cently gained preferred supplierstatus with a large manufacturerof wood-based furniture products.

Over 90 per cent of the materi-als used by the company are lo-cally sourced. The company alsooperates a ‘green’ sustainable re-furbishment programme.

According to managing direc-tor Anthony Kiff, much of the com-pany’s success can be attributed tothe performance of the AXYZrouters that have been installed. These have now been supple-mented with the purchase of atop-of-the-range AXYZ Twin Headlarge-format CNC router. AnthonyKiff commented: “As a result of thegenerous trade-in offer made byAXYZ International, it was possibleto exchange one of our old AXYZmachines for a brand new higher-

performance AXYZ 8016 larger-format router. This has helpedspeed up production and furtherenhanced the quality of our workas well as dramatically reducingmaterial wastage.”

The AXYZ Twin Head 8016 is ahigh-volume and high-perfor-mance router with a standard pro-cessing width of 2,565 mm and alength of 3,048 mm that is extend-able up to 10 m in increments of610 mm. It has a maximum posi-tioning speed of 25 m/min with the

option of higher speeds if requiredand gantry clearances of up to 300mm to accommodate thicker ma-terials. Key features of the router in-clude the latest A2MC machinecontrol system that intelligentlyregulates acceleration and deceler-ation during the routing/cuttingprocess, the AXYZ Smart Consolethat rides alongside the gantry forease of start-up and a helical rackand pinion drive system.

In conclusion, Anthony Kiffstated: “Although AXYZ Inter-national has been and remains apreferred supplier, we did look atother machines on the marketprior to purchasing the AXYZ 8016but none matched this router interms of the improved quality andreliability demanded by one of ourbiggest clients. Furthermore, wehave enjoyed a long and success-ful business relationship withAXYZ International and have beenparticularly impressed with its cus-tomer support facilities, reliabilityand overt commitment to clientsatisfaction.”Wilcare WalesTel 01446 772227www.wilcarewales.co.ukAXYZ InternationalTel 01952 291600www.axyz.co.uk

ALPHACAM software was in-strumental in helping a cabinetmaker turn his passion into hisliving. Neil Haynes has beenmaking guitars as a hobby, en-tirely by hand, for 25 years; andestablished Haynes Guitarsaround two years ago to com-bine his love for music withwoodworking.

There are two strings to thecompany’s bow: firstly, makingcomplete custom-built guitars forindividual customers, and sec-ondly, producing necks and bod-ies for other luthiers.

“It’s great making things byhand, but there’s not a lot ofmoney in it. Everything I’ve evermade is a good instrument, butusing Alphacam to drive my CNCrouter means I can produce a lotmore guitars, and every one willbe to the highest standard.

“When I’m making repeat guitarbodies I need to be able to walkaway from the machine knowingeach one will be perfect when thecycle finishes. I invested in a FelderFormat Profit HO8 router, andhave been using it with Alphacamfor the last 12 months. It’s the onlyway I can show a profit.”

He says it has revolutionised theway he works, and given him abusiness with a future; already ex-porting to many countries, includ-ing New Zealand, USA, Norway,Germany, Italy and NorthernIreland.

Currently selling around 40bodies and necks a month —which he says makes up aroundtwo-thirds of his total output, withthe remaining third being com-plete custom-made guitars — he

says each body used to takearound two days to produce byhand. Now, the back and front of aguitar body with 2D geometry isdone in about 30 minutes usingAlphacam, while a 3D carved toptakes around 45 minutes. He saysthis will lead to him doubling thatoutput in the coming months.“And I can create a neck with fin-gerboard and inlay in about anhour and a quarter. Previously I’dspend well over a day on thewoodwork side of it.”

As a complete novice for bothCAD and CAM, the quick learningcurve was music to his ears. “I nowenjoy programming with Alpha-cam just as much as I did doingeverything by hand. There’s stillsome hand finishing, but Alpha-cam does all the actual wood-working and carving, and givesme full confidence that each gui-tar will come out exactly as I wantit to.”

The components making upthe guitar have to be 100 per centaccurate, he says, especially thepockets for attaching the neck tothe body. “If it’s not a good joint, the instrument’s tone won’t beright.”

A luthier’s skills also includeknowing which timbers work welltogether, and the finish required.Bodies are made from variouswoods, including Alder for itsstrong, clear, full-bodied beefymids and excellent lows; SwampAsh, with its twangy, airy sound;and the warm, resonant Korina,Maple and Walnut are also popu-lar for veneered tops. The finger-boards are mainly Padauk,Rosewood or Maple.

The biggest challenge to hismanufacturing process is continu-ity of quality — which Alphacamovercomes with ease. “For in-stance, the fretwork has to be per-fect. If a slot for the wire should be0.6 mm wide, that’s what it has tobe. And using Alphacam to pro-gram the router, that’s never goingto waiver … it’ll be the same onevery guitar. If the fingerboardneeds a 7.5-inch radius, that’s ex-actly what it’ll be.”

He says Alphacam’s ability to

easily manipulate toolpaths is oneof its best features. “If someone re-quires a neck which is a littledeeper in some parts, and thinnerin others, it’s so easy to alter it. Orif a customer wants dot inlays tobe 4 mm instead of the traditional6 mm I simply change the diame-ter of the circle with a tick of thebox, and that updates the tool-path. It takes seconds, but doing itby hand would take hours.”

Being a one-man band, Alpha-cam has given him a business thatturns a profit, and worth investinghis time in. “At first I was nervousabout learning and using CAD andCNC machinery, never havingdone it before. But I needn’t havebeen. Alphacam means I can drawa product that is easily machine-able, maintains consistent qualitythrough perfect toolpaths, andsells.”

All in all, Alphacam struck justthe right note in ensuring NeilHaynes’ dream of turning his pas-sion into his living was not onlypossible, but enjoyable, too.Haynes Guitarswww.haynesguitars.co.uk

BROTHERS Antony and MatthewGuppy, owners of Beehive Join-ery, purchased Joinerysoft’sJoinery Management Software(JMS) in 2015 when they decidedthat software would be vital inmoving forward and give themgreater control of their business.

The brothers took over their fa-ther’s workshop and started Bee-hive Joinery in 2000. Sixteen yearslater they have four joiners, oneapprentice, a glazier, and a parttime admin member. They have ahigh staff retention rate amongsttheir unusually young workforcewith one member starting withthe company at aged fourteen.Another fourteen years later thesame joiner is now experiencedand a valuable member of theteam. Antony says, “It is key havingthe right people as we are workingclosely together.” Their father nowruns the glazing company, part ofBeehive Joinery also.

Within the last three years theyhave purchased high performancetooling and manufacture predom-inantly using Accoya engineeredtimber. Following these changesthey purchased software for quot-ing and manufacturing from Join-erysoft to improve the logistics ofthe business. Antony confirms,“Joinerysoft is instrumental to thedirection that we are going. Weuse JMS as a tool from quotationto a detailed job sheet coveringthe smallest details.

“We purchased Joinerysoft aswe recognised we had a bottle-neck in the office,” says Antony.“Quoting with pen and paper andthen typing out the quotes, adding drawings, all took toomuch time.” He adds, “Our newtooling has improved our produc-

tion times. We need to push outestimates as quickly as we can tokeep orders coming in to keep themachines going.”

Customers of Beehive Joineryhave commented how clear thenew JMS quotes are and the pro-fessional response provides acompetitive advantage for Bee-hive Joinery. Antony says, “JMS hasenabled us to quote for larger jobswhich we wouldn’t have consid-ered previously. We are able toquote 50% quicker and can makeamendments to quotes easily to

reflect job revisions.” The JMS soft-ware makes it easy to give eachjoinery item a unique reference solater revisions are easy.

Joiners in the workshop havealso welcomed the new JMS gen-erated job sheets and cutting lists. They like having all information inone place so they can start the job.Antony confirms, “It makes theirlife easier and speeds up produc-tion.” The JMS job sheets displayedon a newly introduced board inthe workshop enable all joiners toclearly see what work is inprogress. It also makes planningwork much easier.

JMS has transformed more thanjust their quoting process with theadded benefit of allowing them tolook deeper into other sections oftheir business to introduce newprocesses and highlight other ca-pabilities. Antony explains: “JMShas allowed us to analyse our busi-ness as well as change our attitudeabout our capabilities. It has madeus ask questions that we wouldhave never thought of before, such as why certain processeswere taking us so long. We canalso see whether we are under orover charging.” Though waiting forthe results of his financial yearend, Antony has no doubt that thefigures will be good. Joinerysofthas definitely played a part in this.

Joinerysoft’s time served joinersprovide full support for its JMS soft-ware. This includes two days’ train-

ing and full telephone support.Antony says, “The support team al-ways get back to us when they saythey will. They are also happy topoint us in the right direction whenwe have a silly question!”

Joinerysoft’s newly introducedJMS-Setup Wizard has made cus-tomising the software to their re-quirements much easier. Antonyexplains how they have been toobusy to fully setup JMS, but theyhave benefited from using only30% of the software. The new wiz-ard will be the push they need tostart using it 100%. Antony says,“The wizard is pictorial based so itis easy to add our high perform-ance tooling: even staff with noexperience of joinery could use it.”

Antony concludes, “The endproduct produced by JMS allowsus to present a professional imageto our customers. JMS is also keyfor allowing me to orchestrate ourflow of work. It has made ourprocesses much smoother whichmakes it much more enjoyable tocome to work.” He adds, “OverallJMS has given us control and di-rection which we can see in our fi-nancial figures.”Beehive Joinery LtdTel 01963 364088info@beehivejoinery.co.ukwww.beehivejoinery.co.ukJoinerysoft LtdTel 01608 [email protected]

WHEN DUTY CALLS for John Dunne, owner of Mother Hubbards Cupboards,to design a new kitchen, he says it is apleasure, not a chore, thanks to CabinetVision.

“Some people play computer gamessuch as Call of Duty for leisure, as a pass-time. I have Cabinet Vision — that’s gamingfor me.”

Designing bespoke kitchens for individ-ual customers in and around Leeds, JohnDunne finds it ideal for his popular lay-on,modular system. And he says it is the onlyCAD software he has come across that canhandle his speciality — a traditional framesystem.

Cabinet Vision is able to create the framesas one continuous run of bespoke units, asopposed to the modular system where allthe separate units butt together. “Before in-stalling Cabinet Vision I had to physicallydraw my frame system designs using penciland paper on an old-fashioned drawingboard. No other software could do it.”

Even curved frames incorporating thefront and side of the cabinet can be handledwith ease by Cabinet Vision. “I call it a tradi-tional frame because this is how cabinets used to look in the old days, be-fore the advent of modular systems. I first saw a skilled joiner in Irelanduse this traditional structure, creating cabinets by hand, and I thoughtthey looked so much better thanthe lay-on modular cabinets.”

He says another of Cabinet Vi-sion’s great strengths is not only itsperfect 3D rendered image of thedesign, but its ability to show theengineering behind the kitchen, with the wire frame view detailingexactly how everything is put to-gether. “Many kitchen design sys-tems seem more geared towardspresentation than technical sub-stance, but I find this software’sconstructional detail to be partic-ularly valuable.

“It will also give me the sizes ofhousings for the standard drawers, tool and pan containers and stor-

age boxes, along with housings for ovens and microwaves.” As he becamemore confident with using Cabinet Vision he found he was re-honing hisdrawing skills and becoming a better designer. “And that’s after 14 years’

experience on a traditional draw-ing board. It allows me to ‘go into’each cabinet and literally re-inventits properties. I can customise itsdimensions, composition andfunctionality.

“As a design tool, I have foundthat Cabinet Vision has an almostmolecular grasp of detail and anability to re-jig and move that de-tail around as required.” Which is avital aspect for every kitchen pro-duced by Mother Hubbards Cup-boards. “The bespoke element ofmy work means everything comesdown to detail, and I frequentlyneed a cabinet that is 1 mm or 2mm above or below a normal size.”Because the software allows him

to readily design such bespoke cabinets, he is able to use standard tim-ber doors. “With standard doors I need greater flexibiity in the cabinets tocompensate. And, as a technophobe, even my limited knowledge of thesoftware means I have been able to take my business to another level.”

Regarding his own cabinetry, he says nothing is off the shelf, unless heputs it there. “I have built my own library, which helps to enhance theoverall design process of each individual kitchen.”

Whether customers choose the modular kitchen or the high end tra-ditional frame system, they always experience what he calls a ‘eureka’ mo-ment when he shows them the 3D image of how it will look in situ.

Summing up, he says the software gives him a feeling of positivity andconfidence, lightening the workload because he now regards designingas a pleasure, rather than work. “Cabinet Vision provides a win, win, situ-ation — I love the designing side of the business, and it is the closest cus-tomers will see what their kitchen is going to be like without it actuallybeing there.”Mother Hubbards Cupboards l www.motherhubbards.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION specialist Dust ControlSystems (DCS) has recently completed amajor installation at Starbank Panel Pro-ducts’ new manufacturing facility atNewton-le-Willows on Merseyside.

After almost two years of planning andconstruction, Starbank Panel Products Ltd isnow fully operational at its new 16 acre site onthe Sankey Valley Industrial Estate, just a shortdistance from the premises occupied by thecompany for the past 26 years. Starbank’smanaging director, Phil Darbyshire, explains:“This move provides us with a platform to fur-ther grow the company and, just as impor-tantly, ensures that the services we providewill meet our customers’ changing demandsin the future. Since acquiring the site we havecomprehensively redeveloped the existing116,000 ft2 building; doubling our manufac-turing space, and allowing the opportunity forincreased production capacity and flexibility.”

Investment in production machinery forthe new site includes the introduction of asecond Homag BAZ 723 CNC processing cen-tre, complete with bespoke 3D acrylic edge-banding facilities and automated loadinggantry. The company has also installed a cus-tomised Homag VFL 610 through-feed post-

forming line which is configured for the fabrication of wrapped fire doorsand frames.

For dust extraction at the new site, Starbank’s requirement was for asingle, externally-sited, high-efficiency filter that would serve the wholefactory, as well as efficiently feeding woodwaste to a new state-of-the-artbiomass heating system. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, says:“Having worked with Phil and his team for many years we are aware of thecompany’s commitment to a green manufacturing strat-egy, and DCS was able to propose an energy-efficientdust extraction scheme which featured an ECOGATEenergy-saving extraction optimisation system, togetherwith the latest ECOVAR Validus filter from Schuko.”

The Validus 2330 filter, sized at an air volume of115,000 m3/hr, extracts from a total of 16 machines.Waste collected by the filter is discharged, pressure-free,into a screw conveyor which feeds a bucket elevator. Thewaste material, via a second screw, is then dischargedinto a large storage silo. The new generation Schuko fil-ter features a 5 x 37 kW fan cascade system whereby fansare brought on-line or taken off-line according toextraction demand. Cleaning cycles are also tailored tospecific needs by employing a cleaning train regenera-tion system.

Extraction ductwork throughout the new factory isdesigned to ensure optimum extraction velocities, andpneumatic dampers strategically located in the ductingruns enable plastic waste and wood waste to be ex-tracted separately. Furthermore, the ductwork betweenthe fan outlet and filter inlet incorporates ATEX-approvedCARZ back-pressure flap valves which prevent the effectsof a dust explosion from travelling from the filter, backalong ductwork, and into the factory.

All production machines are fitted with Ecogate automatic damperswhich open and close as machines come on-line or shut down — the endresult is a highly-efficient, optimised system that only uses energy whenrequired.Dust Control Systems LtdTel 0800 040 7116Email [email protected] l www.DCSlimited.co.uk

For the VFL 610 postformer, a damper system redirects extraction for either woodor plastic waste.

New generation ECOVAR Validus filter extracts waste from all production machinery at Starbank, and woodwaste is delivered into a16 m tall storage silo.

WHEN DAVID WALDRON, MD of GP Cases Ltd inWiltshire, began researching new dust extractionfor his wooden packaging business to upgrade anold and “rather tired” system in their 20,000 ft2

factory in Royal Wootton Bassett, he knew heneeded specialist help. The old, labour-intensivelayout had been running for years and towardsthe end of 2015 he wanted to combine a new dustfilter and extractor with the installation of a bio-mass heating system.

So Steve Matuska made a number of visits fromDustraction to assess the requirements on a sitewhere dust extraction and waste wood fuel neededto be chipped, integrated and conveyed into a pur-pose built storage silo to feed the biomass boilermanufactured and supplied by Wood Waste Technol-ogy. Heat is generated from wood fuel and used tosupply hot water to radiators throughout the factorybuildings and offices.

“The old extraction system was inefficient and verylabour intensive,” says David Waldron. “Filtered wastewas discharged into plastic bags which, as they werefilled, were taken off outflows manually, the bags re-placed and the waste then taken outside to a skip fordumping to landfill. This, together with the disposalof offcuts, represented at least five man-hours perweek so the new automatic layout brings a significantreduction in man power that can now be redeployedmore productively.” Waste is now converted into fuelby a chipper and transported along Dustraction’s ductwork runs to the filter system and up theinclined conveyor to a new purpose-built storage silo.

GP Cases has a very good website — www.gpcases.co.uk — explaining the range and extent ofbespoke timber packaging the company designs, manufactures and supplies. It is a successfulfamily business which has been based in Royal Wootton Bassett for the last 50 years.

Dustraction replaced all ducting mains throughout the GP Cases factory for the fully automatictransportation of dust and wood-chip fuel from all existing drops serving band, panel and cross-cut saws, plus the range of timber-dimensioning machinery in use at any one time, and transport-ing waste via noise reductive, aerodynamically designed branch ducts on tapered sections. SteveMatuska reports that a new fully-sequenced control panel services around a dozen individual ma-chines via fully enclosed fans on anti-vibration mounts, using flexible isolation sleeves and outletattenuators to reduce break-out noise to an absolute minimum.

A No. 27 RV four-section modular filter by Dustraction is mounted on a steelwork support gantryand discharges all waste via Dustrax No. 33 floor-mounted, heavy-duty fanset to an inclined con-veyor and an externally mounted silo that is now also feeding a new biomass boiler by Wood WasteTechnology fully automatically. This is the latest 199 kW boiler which generates 92.4% heat from fuelwaste burned compared with 68% by Wood Waste Technology’s 150 kW model that it supersedes.

Dustraction’s filtersystem comprisesmore than 1,000 ft2 ofcloth with a filtrationvelocity of around2.38 m/min and anautomatic shaker sys-tem which is de-signed for periodicremoval of cake dustfrom the filter areasduring manufactur-ing and also on shut-down. “I must give allcredit to the menfrom Dustraction fortheir help, expertise and sensitivity in providing us with what is to us arevolutionary new extraction and conveyor system,” says David Waldron.

This was a difficult job for various reasons, Steve Matuska added, butthe planning and attention to detail was meticulous from the outset andthat made a major difference when it came to the installation. “We hadvery little margin for error because of constraints on height and lengthbut it all came together in the end: we are very pleased with the newsystem and, more importantly, so is Mr Waldron!”Dustraction l Tel 0116 271 3212Email [email protected] l www.dustraction.co.uk

WOOD WASTE Technology has recently installed one of its new bio-mass hot water boiler systems into a Northamptonshire companythat was looking to reduce its carbon footprint and lower its billswhilst benefiting from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

The state-of-the-art boiler was installed into Astabridge Ltd, a manu-facturer and installer of specialist furniture, display, shop fittings andpoint of sale equipment that has supplied premium quality fixtures to re-tailers, beauty salons, international airports and commercial premisessince 1989.

The management team at Astabridge was keen to embrace more en-vironmentally friendly solutions, and had read about the benefits of bio-mass boilers in trade journals. When they calculated how much moneywas being spent each year on hiring skips to remove wood waste, andthen on gas-fired heating to keep the 65employees in the 30,000 ft2 factory in Corbywarm during the colder months, they re-alised that the business could benefit finan-cially from investing in a biomass boiler.

Whilst doing more research, the teamlearnt that the business could qualify forgenerous RHI payments by purchasing oneof Wood Waste Technology’s new biomassboilers, which provide space heating for thefactory, plus heating and domestic hotwater for the rest of the building.

The Government’s Renewable Heat In-centive (RHI) offers substantial financial ben-efits to companies who invest in newbiomass technology. For example, com-panies with successful RHI applicationscould earn around £17,000-£21,500 a year, for 20 years, with a 209 kW boiler.

The boiler at Astabridge has been de-signed to be user friendly, and contains

many innovative features that give Astabridge flexibility of use. For in-stance, the boiler can run from 30% up to full capacity, so it can be turneddown when the factory is empty, which makes better use of resourcesand gives the company a greater return on each kilogram of wood waste. The boiler can also work in ‘low fire’ mode if the business ever finds itselfwith limited wood waste to feed the boiler, or alternatively can be oper-ated in ‘turbo’ mode to boost heat output if required.

Astabridge also purchased a GAZ82 shredder, to enable the companyto more easily store any wood waste they preferred not to use straightaway. Wood Waste Technology is the official UK distributor for Gross Ap-paratebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision en-gineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes andspecifications to suit all business applications.

The team at Astabridge purchased its boilerat a time when a drop in the RHI tariff was im-minent. Although it was a race against time,Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engi-neers pulled out all the stops to finish every-thing by the deadline, to allow Astabridge toclaim the highest rate of RHI possible.

Martin Pope, finance director at Asta -bridge, says: “Buying a biomass boiler hashelped solve our long term problem of ex-pensive waste removal and heating costs inthe business, and we are pleased we havefound this solution. The team at Wood WasteTechnology has really helped us incorporatethe new boiler into our usual working prac-tices, and worked hard to help us maximisethe financial benefits available from the RHIscheme.”Wood Waste TechnologyTel 01785 250400www.woodwastetechnology.com

PASQUILL, believed to be the largest supplier of trussed rafters inthe UK, has manufactured and delivered over 500 metal web floorcassettes plus 50 14.5 m wide roof trusses for a new school underconstruction at Kidsgrove in Staffordshire.

Manufactured at a rate of over 180/week at the company’s Chorleybranch, the floor cassettes were delivered within three weeks on behalfof Innovaré Systems, a major UK provider of SIP solutions. The high widthof the roof trusses was necessary in order to accommodate the school’smechanical and electrical plant requirements.

The floor cassettes feature Posi-Joists, which combine the light weightof timber with the strength of a steel web. They offer easy access for theinstallation and maintenance of the services in a floor zone. This is a par-ticular benefit with the move towards more sustainable buildings, whichhave an increasing number of mechanical ventilation and heat recoverysystems being installed, driving architects and specifiers to look for moreversatile solutions.

Pasquill’s client, Innovaré Systems, is providing an energy efficientstructure using its i-SIP Structural Insulated Panel system. Commenting

on the project, Alex Banks, head of project delivery forInnovaré, said: “As a SIPs supplier from design to build, thekey benefit to our clients is speed with design flexibility. Thepartnership we have developed with Pasquill has really en-abled us to speed up the installation process through useof their Posi-Joist cassette floors. Our construction processenables us to reduce time spent on-site by up to 50%, whichhas been assisted in no small part by the cassette floors sup-plied by Pasquill.”

At the Kidsgrove site the existing upper school was de-molished to enable the new building to be constructed andopened in 2016. The project has been registered with theConsiderate Constructors scheme.

The new three-storey school building with state-of-the-art facilities will greatly enhance the educational opportu-nities of the young people of Kidsgrove and surroundingareas. The school will feature, amongst other things, a mod-ern hall with retractable theatre style seating; an open-planlearning resource centre overlooking spacious dining facil-ities; and specialist teaching rooms for all subjects.Pasquill l www.pasquill.co.uk

THE FOREST Proprietary Gram-mar School was opened on Oc-tober 1, 1834, with 22 boys inall, and under the headship ofDr Thomas Dry.

The great William Morris’ fatherwas a founding shareholder inForest School and some of hisbrothers were pupils there.

The original intake of 22 pupilshas grown significantly to nearly1,400 today and the School edu-cates boys and girls aged 4-18with outstanding results.

As estate staff member, RobColes, explained, “For some timethere has been a need to cut a lotof board for various projectsaround the school, with class-rooms needing extra cupboards, and scenery for the active moderntheatre. Previously it was not pos-sible to cut up sheets in the con-fined space of the workshop.”

He went on to explain: “Wewere having to use a hand heldportable saw outside, with all theinefficiencies of creating consider-able mess and the problem ofnoise disruption within the class-rooms, as well as being limited bythe weather.”

In addition, Rob highlightedthat every cut had to be individu-ally marked out, which all tooktime.

Both Rob and the Estates Man-ager independently came to theconclusion that a vertical panelsaw such that they had seen in theDIY sheds would make an ideal so-lution, and it was through the in-ternet that Rob found details ofthe Sagetech machine, which wasparticularly appropriate with themonly cutting 8 ft x 4 ft sheets, asSagetech offers a very small, com-pact unit for this purpose.

The school opted for one of theSagetech Koolkut KK12 verysolidly built machines.

As Rob added, “We are so busyat present that I use this machinealmost every day.

“It really has saved us space, with the added extraction facilitythere is virtually no dust.

“It is much more accurate thanour previous methods. The finish isbetter, and if we are doing a num-ber of repetitive cuts, it is so muchfaster.

“I can just set the gauge and Iknow I have got an accuratesquare cut. I would strongly rec-ommend this machine to others.”

The Koolkut KK range of ma-chines starts with an 8 ft x 4ft(2,500 x 1,250 mm) capacity unit.

This is just one of the now fourranges of machines offered byBritish manufacturer Sagetech, who specialise in vertical panelsaws for the smaller business.

The Zapkut brand is for lighterduties, and in addition to the ZMrange the company also offers aZK portable unit, believed to beunique, in two sizes, which whennot in use can be folded up com-pactly and stored conveniently, say by hanging on the wall.

The Koolkut brand is for thoseneeding a heavier duty machine, where the KF and KK Koolkut unitsoffer capacities up to 3.1 x 2.1 m,so these are easily capable of han-dling big 3 m x 2 m sheets.

Sagetech thus provides a verycomprehensive range of sizes andmodels, enabling its customers, whose needs range from intermit-tent cutting to the higher endusers (with some even cutting anaverage of 150 sheets a week), toselect the most compact, space-saving solution appropriate totheir business.SagetechTel 0118 970 [email protected]

AN AMATEUR beekeeper has used Norbord’s SterlingOSB to house his three colonies ofbees in Maidenhead, Berkshire and Egham, Surrey.

Beekeper, Richard Emmett, has used SterlingOSB as a ready substitute to build his three‘National’ hives to house his bee colonies. Due to the single-walled nature of the hive, and thesensitivities of wild bees, it is imperative that they are made using light, weatherproof, un-treated materials. Many National hives used by British beekeepers are made of cedar woodor pine but these materials are relatively expensive.

“A single National beehive, including bees, made from a flat pack, self-assembly kit madeof cedar can cost up to £750 to make. SterlingOSB provides a great value for money alterna-tive, being light and durable, to cedar wood. As SterlingOSB dosn’t need treating like cedarit really is a perfect substitute for building a beehive!” says Richard.

Norbord is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engineered wood-based panelproducts. All products are FSC-certified and used extensively in the construction, DIY andfurniture sectors. THE WEINIG Cube has becomesynonymous with simple planingand work pieces perfectlyprocessed on four sides in a sin-gle throughfeed. Sales of morethan 500 machines, mostly inGerman-speaking territories, bear impressive testimony tothis. However, that was no reasonfor Weinig to rest on its laurels.

Instead, Weinig presented thesecond generation of the machineat Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg:the Cube Plus. The Cube Plus com-bines proven features such as in-tuitive operation and automaticpositioning with additional con-venience functions. Thus, theCube Plus underlines its claim asthe easiest planing machine to op-erate worldwide and is severaltimes faster than processing witha straightener and planer.

The standard controls of theCube Plus are managed via atouch panel with a 10.4 in screen(diagonal measurement), which ismore than three times larger thanthe previous panel. Dimensionsand feed speed can be enteredmore easily thanks to the corre-spondingly larger buttons.

The tool situation has also beensignificantly improved on theCube Plus: The new model retainsthe EasyLock tool system that fa-cilitates changes of the reversibleknives in the machine. However, are-design of the tools provides im-proved flying of chips for extrac-tion while simultaneously

reducing noise emissions for theoperator significantly.

The Cube Plus can also be fittedwith optional spiral planer headsequipped with wear-resistant car-bide planing cutters. This pro-duces good surface quality, particularly when processinghardwood, as well as a reductionin tears in branch areas.

To make the necessary toolchanges of the spiral planingheads as user-friendly as possible, the Cube Plus comes with toolclamping nuts as standard, whichallow the use of a conventionalkey. Alternatively, quick clampingnuts can also be used.

Similarly, setting of the straight-ening spindle has also been madesignificantly easier. There is nowfine adjustment on the front of themachine for adjusting the traveledge of the planing head on themachine table. This allows radialpositioning to be performedquickly and conveniently. Thosewho want to get even more out ofthe Cube Plus can extend the ma-chine with an automatic stacker atthe outfeed. This enables prof-itable one-man operation. The dis-play on the infeed ensures that theoperator always has sight of howmany work pieces the automaticstacker can still take.

The Cube Plus has a number ofintelligent innovations for evengreater ease of use in terms ofcontrols, noise emissions and toolchange. All of the innovations

could be experienced live on theWeinig stand at Nuremberg.Michael Weinig (UK) LtdTel 01235 557600

SANDING & FINISHING

A VIET wide belt sander hasboosted efficiency at an Oxford-shire door manufacturer.

Shaker Doors, a family-ownedbusiness employing 12 staff, spe-cialises in the manufacture of high-end bespoke ‘Shaker Style’ kitchencabinet doors as well as internaland external doors. The descrip-tion ‘Shaker Style’ refers to a frameand panel door with a flat centrepanel and generally square edgeswithout any profiling, giving asimple straight and clean look.

Shaker Doors’ customer base issplit equally between trade anddomestic customers. An impor-tant part of its domestic revenuestream is the production of re-placement IKEA kitchen andwardrobe doors, or made-to-mea-sure doors for consumers whohave purchased IKEA carcasses. Afitting service within a 50 mile ra-dius of Oxford is available.

The quality doors are producedusing MDF and a wide variety ofhardwoods such as tulip, oak andwalnut.

Before buying the Viet the join-ery company was equipped with

sanders, an entry-level 900 mmwide belt model and a 1,300 mmwide brush sander.

Managing director, OliverBryan, said: “Unfortunately thewide belt sander wasn’t really sat-isfactory. After the doors hadpassed through it they had to besent to the bench for sanding withan orbital sander before being putthrough the brush sander. Theywere then oiled or sprayed in ourspray shop.”

As part of a drive to improve ef-ficiency Mr Bryan decided to buya wide belt sander that would takeaway the need for the additoinalbench work.

He carried out some initial re-search on three sander manufac-turers before deciding to take acloser look at the Viet, whose arti-san models are supplied by TMMachinery of Leicester.

“I went along for a demo at TM’sshowroom and told them exactlywhat I needed the sander to do,”he said. “I was impressed with thequality of the finish produced bythe Viet as well as the build of thesanders. I then spoke to an impar-tial service engineer who works inthe woodworking industry and hesaid I couldn’t go far wrong with aViet.”

The S1 model he has bought isa popular 1,350 mm twin-headwide belt sander that offers a win-ning combination of high preci-sion, versatility and a tough build

quality to give it a long workinglife. It is considered an ideal sanderfor use where high levels ofthroughput are required at an af-fordable cost.

Featuring a thick anti-wear steelwork bed that guarantees preci-sion for any job, it has a widerange of sanding units allowingcustomisation to suit a range ofapplications. There’s a choice ofpush button or touch screen con-trols with automatic positioningfor thickness setting, while ad-justable pressure rollers guaranteethe stability of items placed on thework bed.

“Having the Viet has meant wehave become far more efficient inour joinery workshop,” said MrBryan. “The quality of the ma-chine’s calibrating and fine sand-ing means that doors can now gostraight to the brush sander with-out the need for any additionalbench work.

“When I bought it I calculated itmight save us between 15 and 20per cent of the time it used to taketo prepare doors for the brushsander, and this is exactly what weare achieving with it. As well assaving on time and labour it hasalso substantially reduce theamount of product handlingrequired.”TM Machinery SalesTel 0116 271 [email protected]

TIMBERTONE Design Ltd has 25 years’ experience in the kitchen andbedroom industry. The factory, which is modern and purpose built,is based on a two acre site, near Moneymore in Northern Ireland. Itis equipped with the latest production machinery and is constantlyinvesting in new technology. As part of this program, TimbertoneDesign Ltd recently purchased adrawer clamp from Lamont, whichhas helped enhance the quality ofthe company’s dovetail drawers.

Director, David Anderson, explainedthat the company had previously useda wooden mallet to tap the drawers to-gether: when working manually, thereis the risk of the drawer not beingsquare, which would mean that itwould not run properly in the runner. With the drawer clamp from Lamont, this simply doesn’t happen: “Thisclamping system squeezes the drawerwithout putting pressure on the joints:the pressure is evenly spread acrossthe drawer. The drawer is never offsquare now. This gives enormouspeace of mind. I don’t know how I havedone without it for so long, actually!”

One reason why David turned toAlan Lamont of Lamont is that 10 yearsago he purchased a matrix table fromAlan for use with solid timber doors, atable which continues to give excellentservice and is used on a daily basis.David speaks highly of the personal

service he received from Alan. “I phoned Alan and described to him themachine I wanted, I told him what I needed, supplied him with three sam-ples of different sizes of drawers, including curved drawers, and whenthe machine arrived it did exactly what I wanted. It was made to my re-quirements, to suit what I am doing, not something off the shelf,” says

David.“Alan is a gentleman and took time

to go through the order with me. Anyinformation I requested he forwardedto me. I got all the time and attentionneeded to ensure that the product wasmade to suit my requirements.

“The machine was delivered soonerthan I thought it would be: that was abonus. Alan gave me the option ofpicking the machine up myself or hav-ing it delivered, and we chose to haveit delivered. When the machine arrivedwe took the wrapping off and set it inplace: everything was self-explanatory.We have had no hassles with it what-soever, and everything is as it shouldbe.”

When asked if he would recom-mend it, David replied, “Certainly, yes. Iwould recommend the company andthe product, we received excellentservice.”LamontTel 01461 40017Email [email protected]

SANDING & FINISHING

FROM HUMBLE beginnings in 1989, deVOL has grown into arenowned design led manufacturer of bespoke kitchens, in-teriors and bedrooms, all designed and built in Leicestershire.

The company is continually moving forward, as shown by itspurchase of Cotes Mill, a historic 16th century water mill, whichnow boasts four floors of showrooms displaying not only thecompany’s four kitchen ranges but an eclectic mix of vintagefurniture, gifts and unusual home wares all sourced and boughtespecially for Cotes Mill.

In 2013 bathroom cabinets were added to the Shaker range, part of the continual process of designing new pieces to add tothe company’s ranges.

In 2014 a showroom opened in Clerkenwell, London, and in2015 the Sebastian Cox Kitchen was launched: a kitchen thatutilises sustainable British timber combining good taste, mod-ern innovation, traditional techniques and true inspiration.

Managing director, Robin McLellan, is always seeking thatextra 1% of performance that will enhance the quality of thecompany’s offering. As part of this process, deVOL invested in aKündig Premium-3 1100 RRP sander, delivered and commissioned in September 2015.

deVOL had already had a wide-belt sander, Robin told PW&SS, but it was a five-year-oldtwin belt sander which had been second hand when bought, and after a pass through themachine each component also needed to be sanded by hand. “The company is growing, wewere up 48% last year, so we are continually trying to improve the quality of the product andmake sure the processes are as efficient as possible.”

He continues, “In the search for a new sander, we worked through Markfield Woodwork-ing Machinery (MWM), with whom we have a long standing relationship. We have bought alot of machinery from them in the past, and they introduced us to Kündig Ltd and to CarlO’Meara.”

The Kündig sander was one of several that deVOL investigated. Carl says, “Robin went tosee an example of one of our machines working locally to him at Wreak Valley Craftsmen(who have a Premium-2 1100 RE with vacuum belt), where I met him with our area repre-sentative, Mr Gavin Cooper of MWM, and we went through the machine and carried out var-ious demonstrations using different grit configurations on a selection of kitchen doors andcomponents brought by Robin for test purposes. Following further trials using the demon-stration machine at our works, Robin ordered a new Kündig Premium-3 1100 RRP sander.”

Robin says, “We tried a variety of machines, and the Kündig sander was the one we had thebest experience with finishing wise. We were aware of their reputation, and wanted to get thebest machine on the market. The advantages of the Kündig were all very subtle things, andthat is often the case with fine finishing. These subtleties become quite critical in creating afinish that is spot on compared to one that is 99% there. We just wanted to make sure we gotthe belt and braces right.”

Robin highlights as a particular advantage the fact that this is a three belt machine with aroller-roller-pad configuration, and credits this as one of the reasons that further hand fin-ishing is no longer required.

The sander is used to sand doors, including maple doors; worktops and countertops; ply-wood carcass material; in fact, most things used in the kitchens and other furniture ranges will pass through the Kündig sander. “We require a partic-

ularly high finish on the doors, and the Kündig sander gives that,”says Robin.

Kündig’s Premium range is especially designed for the sand-ing and finishing of solid wood and panels, including veneers, and can be configured for lacquer sanding. The sanders are de-signed to be easy to operate, with a well-designed control panel. An often-quoted advantage is the fact that it is the sandingheads that rise and lower, rather than the workpiece. Kündig en-gineers design and manufacture the sanders in such a way thatthey should give reliable service for many years to come.

When asked if he would recommend the Kündig sander,Robin replied, “Yes, it is lovely.” He continued, “One of the big rea-sons for buying the machine was because we had workedthrough MWM previously and had a good relationship withGavin. There is a lot of trust there, and in addition to our ownassessment of the machine, Gavin’s recommendation was key.We received excellent service both from Carl O’Meara and fromMWM.”Kündig Ltd l Tel 0845 833 0565Email [email protected] l www.kundig.co.uk

THE knottec® system fromPower Adhesives is now avail-able with the option of a brandnew, battery powered glue gun.

This repair process, believed tobe unique, for knot defects andother forms of deep wood dam-age can now be used with thecordless b-tec 807, which is com-pletely portable.

Giving users the ability to workvirtually anywhere, it is consideredideal for awkward applicationswhere a mains power source is notavailable, or where the gun needsto be taken to the job in hand.

The b-tec 807 has been de-signed to use the widely availableRYOBI® 18 V 1.5 Ah lithium+ bat-tery and charger, which canachieve recharge times of around60 minutes. This battery, whichcan also be used to power a rangeof RYOBI® power tools, includes anon-board four-stage fuel gauge toindicate how much charge isremaining, making it easier forusers to know when a charge isrequired.

Knots and deep scratches inwood can be filled quickly and

easily using a special knot-fillingadhesive developed by the com-pany, with the help of a 12 mm hotmelt glue gun like the b-tec 807.The system also includes a pair ofhandy heat-sink blocks that can beused to create a ‘form’ around anyknot holes that go through, or areon the edge of, areas of wood thatneed repair.

Once the damaged area hasbeen filled, the knottec® knot-fill-ing adhesive takes just minutes tocool before the excess can betrimmed with a flush plane tool, such as the Mouseplane. The re-paired area can then be sanded, painted or treated as normal, achieving a high-quality finish tothe restored wood.

Because it is so tough, knottec®knot-filling adhesive is perfect forrepairs to things like woodendoors, window frames, furniture, floors and more. This knot-fillingadhesive is also available in six dif-ferent colours to help users achievethe best colour match possible.

Power Adhesives also offers achoice of two additional mains-powered 12 mm glue guns for usewith the knottec® system — thelight industrial tec 305 and theprofessional tec 820 — as well asthe Mouseplane tool for trimmingaway excess glue.

Each of three tec glue gunsavailable with the system has anarrow profile and comes fittedwith an extension nozzle as stan-dard, ensuring that the adhesivecan be applied accurately with noextra effort.

WHEN the conversation turns towide belt sanders it is not longbefore the brand “Boere” ismentioned. Not surprising re-ally as the company has beenproducing wide belt sanders forover 70 years and with over1,000 installations in the UK youare never very far away fromone.

Boere is one of the few special-ist producers of sanding machinesleft, whilst others have been di-luted into groups. Boere still re-mains a family companyproducing only sanding machines.Boere not only produces machinesfor wood, the company also offersmachines for metal, rubber, foamand plastics.

When you ask Paul Boot Boere, sales manager, what is the successof the Dutch company, his reply issimple: “We produce very goodquality machines, that’s all we do,every day.”

The design of all Boere ma-chines is based on four basic rules:the machine should be strong andreliable, not expensive to maintainand easy to operate. “We want ourmachines to operate for decades, not years,” adds Paul. “With greatcustomer service, we don’t wantour customers waiting for servicewhen they need us.”

Boere is distributed by Calder-brook Woodworking MachineryLtd in the UK, who have a networkof specialist trained engineers onBoere machines. Tony Hoyle, man-aging director, has been sellingBoere machines for over 40 years.“I installed the first Boere sanderbrought into the UK in 1974, andit’s still in and working!” he says.

One of the major leaps forward

by Boere in the last 10 years hasbeen the introduction of newtechnology. Tony explained, “Wehave technology where needed,no fancy gimmicks that are notnecessary. The touchscreen V8control is easy to use: very graphic, much like a modern tablet. It givesa platform to run basic machinesand add modules for options formore complicated machines suchas segmented pads, etc. Anotherpopular addition welcomed byusers is the Vision Window andLED lighting: the operator canreally see what is going on in themachine and understand theprocess,” adds Tony. “It’s no longera magic box!”

There are several sides toBoere’s business — standardmachines and special applicationmachines. Also they offer a rangeof edge linishers, narrow beltsanders and structuring machines.

The entry machine is the San-donomic for the smaller workshop: the most popular model isthe 950C.

The Sandrite is an industrialworkhorse well priced and offeredwith options to cover all sanding

requirements. It is available in 1-3units 1,300 mm wide.

Most popular is theCC1300SPSP, a machine suitablefor solids, veneers, paints andlacquers.

“This machine has surprisedeven us,” explained Paul Boot: “themachine out performs machinesof over twice the cost. We havecustomers who have spend hun-dreds of thousands of pounds on asanding machine, but our CC ma-

chine has outshone them on bothfinish and reliability and it is mucheasier to use.”

The Select is a machine withvery heavy construction for themost demanding processes, avail-able in widths 600-1,300 mm with1-4 sanding units in both top andbottom variation.

The Elite is used in the Boerespecial projects department, asub-division at Boere developingmachines using the latest tech-

nologies andengineering

techniques on a “tailor made” ap-proach. Anything is possible in thisrange with sanding widths up to2,500 mm, 1-4 sanding units andin both top and bottom variation.

THE DEMAND FOR HANDMADE furnishings continues to remain high across thecountry. With each product created by dedicated and skilled craftspeople, thehours of hard work that go into each product result in a unique and lastingproduct that many wholesalers cannot compete with.

Steve Slack, the owner of Wood Charm, started woodworking as a hobby but has nowhoned and fine-tuned his skill to make it his profession, creating beautiful bespokeproducts. One of his more recent projects was a handcrafted rocking chair and due tothe importance of prolonging its fine detail and look, finished the product with Osmo’sWood Protector Oil and Polyx®-Oil Rapid.

“I have been using Osmo wood finishes for the past few years,” explains Steve. “Theproducts allow the wood to breathe and do not alter the colour of the timber — twoimportant features in my eyes. Another reason why I enjoy working with Osmo finishesis they are very quick and easy to apply. For this project, I wiped the finish on with a cloth, waited five minutes, and then wiped off the excess.”

When finishing the chair, Steve applied two coats of Osmo Wood Protector, apreservative wood primer believed to be unique, and then applied Polyx®-Oil Rapid.Osmo’s Polyx®-Oil Rapid is a premium wood finish guaranteed to keep wooden surfacesin top condition. As the name suggests, this product offers rapid drying times. Ideal as adurable finish for furniture, it is a high quality, water-repellent wood finish, based onnatural ingredients. Available in a matt, clear and satin-matt finishes, the Polyx®-Oil Rapidrange offers what is believed to be the highest coverage of any oil on the market — a 2.5litre can can cover approximately 30 m2 with two coats.

As well as being suitable for furniture, Polyx®-Oil Rapid is also suitable for use on allwooden floors and can be used on cork floors and for terracotta and other unglazed tiles. It is also well suited for the treatment of internal joinery. Polyx®-Oil Rapid has a clear, quick drying, durable finish, is water repellent and extremely tough and hard-wearing.

NEWS

IAN MATTHEWS, owner of Hi-Tec Joinery, has a pol-icy of self-sufficiency. He is constantly investing innew machinery and equipment to reduce the needto outsource, giving him more control both of thequality of the end product and in ensuring dead-lines are met. His most recent investment has beenin a finishing line, a lipping machine, a saw and anOMC press.

The press, purchased with the assistance of BrianBourne of Sawtec and Carl O’Meara of J & C O’MearaLtd, has proved to be particularly beneficial.

Hi-Tec Joinery was established in June 2002, for theproduction and supply of certified fire doors, liningsand screens, all for the commercial market. Quicklyoutgrowing its first site, the company has twicemoved to larger premises, most recently in 2012. Thecompany supplies doors and screens to schools, uni-versities and colleges; hospitals, care homes and sur-geries; as well as refurbished offices or new premisesfor blue chip companies. The fire doors are certifiedunder the BM TRADA QMark scheme and are testedto BS 476: Part 22 Fire Doors.

For the new press, Ian had investigated a series ofpossibilities with Brian Bourne, with whom he has along standing relationship, and with Carl O’Meara. “I have been round anumber of door manufacturers over the years, and they all have differ-ent equipment. We were presented with a series of options, and the OMCsuited us best,” says Ian. “We have a long, narrow building, so to fit in allthe new machinery, it was essential that the press could be end fed. TheOMC met this requirement.”

Ian’s policy is to invest in equipment that will produce the best pos-sible results, and the OMC press certainly lives up to this. Ian is delightedwith the quality of the pressing. The press is used mostly for pressingveneers onto door core.

Hi-Tec doors are available in a range of veneers, including Walnut,Cherry, Maple, Beech, Oak, Ash, Koto, Eucalyptus and Sapele. The com-pany also supplies a full range of laminate faces from all the main manu-facturers, including Formica and Polyrey.

The press selected by Ian comes with an automatic loading belt witha panel grabbing device. The grabbing device receives the panel fromthe glue spreader and brings it to the automatic loading belt, which isfully synchronised with the belt inside the press. Outside the press thereis a photocell which detects the dimensions of the panel to press, ensur-ing that the machine will press only in the area scanned by the photo-cell, avoiding damage to platens and panels that may occur when thewhole area is routinely pressed.

Constructed in Italy from Fe 430 beams assembled and weldedtogether, the press is equipped with a rack and pinion guide system forperfect parallel movement while the press platen is closing or opening.

The 3,000 mm x 1,400 mm platens are heated by diathermic oil to a

maximum temperature of 120° C, and the maximum pressure of the heat-ing liquid is 10 bar. Insulating material is installed between the press andthe platen, and the platen is hooked to the structure of the press bymeans of tie rods, allowing for thermal expansion. The hydraulic systemis composed of a double stage oil submerged pump, designed both to re-duce noise and to improve lubrication of the rotating parts.

The main control board is supplied complete with a digital Logic Con-trol that allows the setting of the working temperature; the working pres-sure with automatic recovery of pressure; pressing time; pressing cyclesetting; platens opening; and a choice of a manual, semi-automatic orfully automatic cycle. Movement within the press is from top to bottom. The total pressure is 160 tonnes, with a specific pressure on 80% of thesurface of 5 kg/cm2. To ensure operator safety, the opening is controlledby the timer set on the main control board. After pressing, panels are au-tomatically unloaded onto a foldaway rolls conveyor.

Asked if he would recommend the OMC press, Ian replied, “Yes.” It fitswell with his policy of investing in the best available equipment to pro-duce the best possible results.
