From the Pastor’s Computer …

Are you familiar with the 3M Company? Founded in 1902 as the Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co., today the products that we most readily associate with this multinational conglomerate are Post-It Notes, Duct Tape and Scotch Tape.

Lately, I have been thinking about three other “M” words that flow from our Pentecost celebration of last weekend. Those words are: Membership, Maintenance and Mission.

Membership is about belonging to a group or organization. When you join a group, sometimes there are fees to be paid, whether they be one-time or annual. There might even be some type of initiation ceremony. You also may receive discounts or perks because you are a member. For example, when checking out at Barnes & Noble, they ask if I am a member of their Book Club, which will give me savings on things that I am buying. There are even some organizations in which after you become a member, nothing else will be required of you and you can always claim membership in that organization or group!

These same things can be said about being a member of the Catholic Church and / or being a member of a parish. Baptism alone makes us members of the Church. Receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist allows us to become a fully initiated member of the Church. One can stop practicing one’s faith or one can do or say something that removes you from being in communion with the Church (“excommunication”). But in the end, you are still a Catholic.

So, what are some of the perks that come with membership? Even though we may not know each other, we are “related,” for “we are one body, one body in Christ, and we do not stand alone.” (John Michael Talbot) Moreover, in the words of St. Paul, when one member of the body rejoices, they all rejoice; when one member is suffering, they all suffer. We are also invited to not just be receivers of sacraments, but we are called to be active participants in the celebration of the sacraments.

Later on in June, I will share some other reflections on maintenance and mission. Until then, ask yourself these 2 questions: What does it mean for me to be a member of the

Catholic Church, to be member of this parish? What are some of the perks that come with

membership?

ACA Update There are three numbers that I look at each week when I receive my ACA Update. They are: Amount pledged — % of pledge cards returned — # of new donors. As of Tuesday, May 25, those numbers are:

Amount Pledged: $89,604 > Goal = $90,004

Pledge Cards Returned: 25% > Goal = 30%

New Donors: 36 > Goal = 67 Just as you might do, the eyes of each pastor gravitate towards one of those 3 numbers. The amount that you have pledged is amazing. That’s because your generosity is amazing. We have almost matched last year’s amount pledged with 3% fewer participants. I am also grateful for 36 new donors who have made a commitment to help those in need via the various ministries in our Archdiocese. The number I look to the most and wish was higher is the percentage of cards returned. As I have said before, what is most important to me is a returned pledge card, even if you are not able to make a financial pledge. The returned card says you have talked and prayed about your decision, and that you will pray for the success of the campaign. That’s all I could ask for! - Fr. Chuck Barthel

A Thank You! Dear Parishioners, I would like to thank everyone who donated to my Eagle Scout project. In total the Church generously donated $1,386. Through your donations, I have been able to accomplish the project of making 30 blankets for the City Hope St. Louis homeless shelter. Benjamin Torrence Eagle Scout candidate

CDC Guidelines:

We are adjusting to CDC’s latest new guidelines r/e mask mandates 2 weeks ago. Children over age 2 and adults who have not been vaccinated for COVID-19 are to continue to wear properly fitting masks and maintain distance of 6 feet from others. Mandates have been lifted for those who have received the vaccine. They are not required to wear a mask or maintain 6 ft. distance when out although certainly can continue precautions. It is recommended that anyone with a compromised im-mune system continues to wear a mask. Other chang-es: Students in school, whether vaccinated or not, may be closer in distance to one another (now 3 ft. apart). But any who are over 12 years old and vaccinated, are not required to wear a mask unless it is required in school. Currently, all schools, to my knowledge, still require this. Many businesses have increased capacity. However, if specific adherence is indicated by federal, state, or local businesses and workplaces, all guidance toward mask wearing remains. Source: www.cdc.gov entitled “When you’ve been fully vaccinated.” Much in-formation is given on this website and we are encour-aged to check it often for updates. Request vs. requirement:

Many who have been vaccinated have a new sense of “freedom” in choosing to not wear a mask. However, others may wish to continue even if vaccinated. Per-haps each situation determines our actions. Example: If not in close proximity, and not talking to others, would I feel comfortable keeping mask off? When in a setting where I am close to and am talking with others, would I want to put the mask on, especially if “others” I am talk-ing with are not wearing a mask? We are still learning from this pandemic.

TODAY IS FEAST OF THE HOLY TRINITY

The mystery of the most Holy Trinity is a basic doctrine of Faith in Christianity, understandable not with our heads but with our hearts. It teaches us that there are three distinct Persons in one God, sharing the same Divine Nature. Our mind cannot grasp this doctrine which teaches that 1+1+1 = 1 and not 3. But we believe in this Mystery because Jesus who is God taught it clearly, the Evangelists recorded it, the Fathers of the Church tried to explain it and the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople defined it as a dogma of Christian Faith. There is a very old and much-repeated story about St. Augustine, one of the intellectual giants of the Church. He was walking by the seashore one day, attempting to conceive of an intelligible explanation for the mystery of the Trinity. As he walked along, he saw a small boy on the beach, pouring seawater from a shell into a small hole in the sand. "What are you doing, my child?" asked Augustine. "I am trying to empty the sea into this hole," the boy answered with an innocent smile. "But that is impossible, my dear child,” said Augustine. The boy stood up, looked straight into the eyes of Augustine and replied, “What you are trying to do - comprehend the immensity of God with your small head - is even more impossible.” Then he vanished. The child was an angel sent by God to teach Augustine a lesson. Later, Augustine wrote: "You see the Trinity if you see love." According to him, the Father is the lover, the Son is the loved one and the Holy Spirit is the personification of the very act of loving. This means that we can understand something of the Mystery of the Holy Trinity more readily with the heart than with our feeble mind. Evagrius of Pontus, a Greek monk of the 4th century who came from what is now Turkey in Asia and later lived out his vocation in Egypt, said: "God cannot be grasped by the mind. If God could be grasped, God would not be God." http://frtonyshomilies.com/ Taken from: https://www.vaticannews.va/en/church/news/2019-06/sunday-reflections-16-june-2019.html PSR REGISTRATION FOR THE 2021-2022 PSR SCHOOL YEAR IS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED! Andy Dapron reflects: Iconographer Andrei Rublev’s work The Trinity presents a rather striking image of the three Persons of the Godhead engaged in table fellowship. Looking at the image, I am reminded of times I have spent gathered at table with people I love, and I can connect quite readily to the ease with which delight must flow between the three Persons in the icon. In some ways, I think that the Trinitarian life we engage through contemplative practice is mirrored well by a great meal between friends: a time entered into with love, sometimes comforting, sometimes challenging, sometimes surprising. Along the way, things could get messy – there may be spills, and if you’re like me, you’ll end up covered in crumbs and sauce stains. Yet, because of the affinity we share for one another, the time is always valuable, and we never, ever rush. In true table fellowship, we want to linger, as the figures in Rublev’s icon surely do. Perhaps this is the best way to express the freedom available in contemplation: the freedom to linger in the comforting, surprising, challenging, messy, but always-worth-it Presence of God, long after the meal has ended, through the night and on into early dawn…

On a Lighter Note I'm working on a new typeface to be used for church bulletins........it's called the "Baptismal Font". Thought you would enjoy. Guess which parishioner with the initials DD came up with this gem.

Our Parish Story

We kicked off our 25th anniversary with a Mass on June 2, 1996, where some of the former priests and brothers who served at the parish returned for the celebration. The theme for the anniversary year was “The Spirit – Catch It, Live It, Share It.” The parish Homecoming, Mission and Auction were held later in the year to commemorate the anniversary. The auction was held at Bishop DuBourg High School on October 26, 1996. Proceeds benefited the parish’s building projects.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

“The Lord is King; he is robed in majesty.” Psalm 93:1

We do not come before a ruler with an earthly crown. The majesty with which Jesus is robed in His perfect gift of selfless love, surrendering His life so that all who believe might be saved. Visit your Lord and King in His “royal palace” (the gilded monstrance) in our Caton Chapel.

Please consider giving yourself and Our Lord the gift of an hour of your time in quiet prayer and reflection. It will prove to be time well spent .

Our hourly Schedule is as follows: Tuesday 9:00AM - 8:00PM Wednesday 9:00AM - 7:00PM

Thursday 4:00PM - 9:00PM

Please call Pat Dean at 314-842-1887 to volunteer for a weekly time or if you have any questions regarding Adoration.

Now that many people have had their vaccines, hopefully more people will return to Adoration. Our hours are printed below. We especially need someone for the time slot of Tuesdays at 6 PM. Please call Pat Dean (314-842-1887) if you can be there at that time on a regular basis. Thanks to all who have been so consistent in adoring.

Save a Life. Contact Congress.

WHAT: Congress is trying to force Americans to pay for abortion.

HOW: The Hyde Amendment and similar laws have protected taxpayers from funding elective abortion for 45 years. Now, powerful members of Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century.

WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT THESE PROTECTIONS? Billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortion.

TAKE ACTION: Sign the petition to Congress at NoTaxpayerAbortion.com !

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

From Archbishop Rozanski’s Statement after the Derek Chauvin guilty verdict: “We acknowledge that the verdict in this trial does not erase the pain we have all felt as we witnessed someone needlessly die in such an inhumane manner. It also does not eradicate the sin of racism in our community, nation and world.”

For self-reflection: Does this statement line up with what I think and feel? Can I find a way to discuss the verdict with people with whom I both agree and disagree? Interested in joining the MMOC’s Peace and Justice Ministry?

Care for Creation Make Your Own Compost

Making your own compost for the garden can be both economical and satisfying. A compost bin can be built out of wood. The amount of dry/brown material such as leaves should be twice as much as wet/green material like fresh grass or vegetable scraps. Do not add dairy or meat as this will attract rodents. If the compost dries out spray it with the garden hose. It should also be aerated from time to time to aid decomposition. This can be done by turning it over with a garden fork. Finally, use the compost when it is fully decayed. Source: The PW Proven Winners Garden Book by Ruth Rogers Clausen and Thomas Christopher
