Transcript of OUTILTEC Single Flute Gundrill · Outilec Gundrill Outiltec's gundrill consists of a single piece...
Outilec GundrillOutiltec's gundrill consists of a single piececarbide head, a streamlined shank and a driverthrough which coolant flows to the working endwhere it is most needed. Chips are evacuatedalong the “v”-shaped external flute.
The Drilling HeadThe carbide head is tapered on its length toreduce friction. The taper angle depends on thetype of material to be drilled. For high precisiondrilling, the taper should be reduced to aminimum (see page 3). Note that when the headis resharpened, the diameter of the drill changes, effecting the hole tolerance.
The ShankThe cross-section of the shank is V-shaped withcoolant holes. It is made of hardened steel that ishighly resistant to twisting (for information oncarbide shanks, see next page). This cross-section provides the optimal conditions for twistresistance, coolant flow and chip evacuation.
The DriverThe driver ensures the connection between thegundrill and the machine tool, (see pages 6-7 fordetailed driver information).
Outiltec’s advanced Gundrill technology providessuperior geometric and dimensional quality forboth deep and shallow drilling. The drills are available in the range of 2.5 to 32mm in 0.1 mm increment diameters. Largerdiameters, between 32 and 40 mm, are availableupon request. In addition, any other drilling headconfiguration or coated drilling head can beproduced upon request.
Advantages• Drilling precision of IT7 to IT9 tolerances can
be reached.• Excellent straightness and concentricity.• Maintains high precision hole center alignment. • Surface roughness of R0.4 - R1.6 is easily
obtained.• Reboring operations are often unnecessary.

Another type of gundrill is made with integraltip and shank, made of solid carbide with eithera steel or a carbide driver. These drills aredesigned for conventional machines, machiningcenters and lathes. This style of gundrill isavailable from 1.4-16 mm and can be used onvarious types of materials. It provides superiorrigidity and optimal coolant flow rates. As aresult of its rigidity, up to 100% higher feedsand speeds can be reached. When using the small diameter drills, it iscrucial to adhere closely to recommendeddrilling parameters.

User GuideThe gundrill is not a self-centering tool. Therefore an external means must be used toguide it to the point of entry into the workpieceIt is recommended that the machine tool beequipped with a means for guiding the gundrill, preferably during the entire drilling process. Analternative method is a pre-drilled guide hole(figure 2), which is common for machiningcenters. Once the drill has been fully engagedinto this hole, it continues being self-guided.The guiding pads contribute to the high degreeof calibration and provide burnishing of thedrilled hole.

Deep DrillingToolsThe Grinding Wheel
The gundrill should be re-sharpened with aspecial diamond grinding wheel. The double-function wheel is divided into two areas. Theexternal area is for rough grinding - during thisoperation the temperature of the drill does notrise significantly. The internal, fine-grained diamond is forfinishing and it ensures high surface quality.
The Grinding Machine
A standard grinding machine (adjustable onthree planes) for the gundrill range of 2.5 - 40mm must be equipped with a special supportfor long gundrills.

Drilling Tolerances Obtainable InDeep Hole Drilling
Tolerance range under normal conditions. Tolerance range under optimal conditions.
Surface quality of 0.2 Ra can be achieved when usinggundrills under recommended conditions.
Surface Quality
Tolerance range under normal conditions. Tolerance range under optimal conditions.
The resulting quality depends on different factors such as:• Drilling depth and diameter• Type of machining and cutting parameters• Quality and uniformity of the workpiece material• Machine tool conditions• Gundrill support.
Concentricity and Straightness
The geometric quality of bores obtained fromdeep hole drill bits is clearly higher than thatobtained with the use of twist drills. It ispossible to obtain precision with deviations ofless than 4µm.

Deep DrillingToolsCutting Parameters
The most effective machining depends on the workpiece material and its structure. The shape of the chip produced during machiningoperation determines their ease of evacuation from the cutting area. The chip shape is influenced by the feed, speed and cutting headgeometry. The ideal chip shape for materials with normalmachinability is a short helix, cork screw shape.

Gundrill Lubrication and Cooling
The best performance is obtained by using oil. On Equipment that uses water-soluble fluids (i.e., on machining centers and CNC machines) a concentrationbetween 10% and 15% is recommended.
Guidelines for Optimal Gundrill Performance:• Coolant pressure and flow:
It is recommended to use a strong coolant flow for efficient chip flushing andcooling of the cutting edge.
• Filtration:It is suggested that a filter under 20 µm be used.Note: Improper filtration may result in interrupted flow of the lubricating oil. This creates a sticky surface on the bearing pads and leads to prematurewear of the tool and overloading coolant pump and spindle seals.
• Temperature of the coolant:The coolant temperature should be between 20 and 22ºC.Note: Above 50ºC the viscosity of the coolant is reduced by 50% andbecomes ineffective.
Choice of coolant:
OUTILTEC, in cooperation with JP INDUSTRIE, recommends the following oilsand water-soluble fluids to obtain the finest performance from your gundrills.
