Our Trip to Rutland Water
By Bethany, Melissa and

What We Planned to Achieve!
Safe and enjoyable day out with more adventurous activities. We wanted to challenge ourselves and learn new skills.
We also wanted to give ourselves the chance to try new activities and work together as a team.
A chance for us all to have a fun day out.We wanted to push ourselves further so that we were out of our
comfort zone.We wanted to encourage people to
take part in different activities that they wouldn’t usually do!We wanted to gain in
confidence.
What We Actually Achieved!
We all enjoyed the experience, which you can tell from the pictures.
Everyone worked together and supported each other. We really challenged ourselves and pushed ourselves to our
limits. Everyone was well behaved and stayed safe throughout the day. People exceeded their expectations of what they expecting to
do. We encouraged people to do more
exercise and peoplewere asking to go again. We all had great FUN!!!
Who Benefited!
Everyone benefited from the day out especially Lauren who was our most severely disabled teenager and she didn’t stop smiling throughout the day! The
parents also benefited from the day out as they watched their children scale new heights and also
took to the challenge themselves. Our younger members of the Can Do Sports Club
also enjoyed the day out as there was a
trampoline in use throughout the day.
Risk Assessment - Sailing
We all went to risk assess the Sailing club but didn’t go out on the boat that day. We learnt that all staff
and Can Do members must wear CE approved buoyancy aid when near or on the water for the risk of drowning. We were also told that if the weather
turned for the worst then we wouldn’t go out on the water and
we were told that we had to wear appropriate
clothing, waterproofsand safety jackets.
Risk Assessment – Rock Blok
We all went to risk assess the Rock Blok and tried out the high ropes and climbing wall to check on the
safety issues. We were told we couldn’t have anything in our pockets that could fall and one child at a time goes onto the obstacle (especially if it was
wobbly). We were told not to mess
with harnesses onceour instructorshad tightened
them up.
What we did - Sailing
We all went sailing (no one fell out) out onto Rutland water. We split into groups and all had a go at
steering the boat and pulling the sail out. It was great fun and everyone really enjoyed it. No one had
attempted it before and enjoyed it thoroughly. We were fairly scared before going out but
when we were back on shore we had loads
to tell everyone.
What we did - Climbing
Everyone who could went up the climbing wall to their own limits. Most people made it to the top and
some people tried the harder sides and made it to the top as well. Even adults had a go at the walls,
Roger had a go at the hardest wall there but couldn’t make it to the top. Overall
everyone loved it andhad a good go and pushed themselves
to achieve theirown personal goals!
What we did – High Ropes
After testing the high ropes out on the day we risk assessed we have to admit that we were very
nervous. It was the activity to end all activities but we all had a very good go and most people at least
went up to the platform. Everyone who started made it all the way round
the circuit and were extremely proud of
themselves when theygot to the end! Even
the adults!
What We Learnt!
That we had to check on the cancellation policy as pointed out by the panel, which was that they would charge us for 10 children but the Rock Blok would go on more or less whatever the weather. We also learnt how hard it actually is to organise a day out for
the group but have learnt a lot during this experience. No matter what the disabilty
children can achieve to theirfull potential.
THANK YOU FOR THE FUNDING!
