NEW SOURCES OF ENERGY

Biomass: Organic compound created in biologic process, unexpected or expected. It can

be used as a source of energy.

Solar: Is the energy which comes from the radiation of the sun.

Wind: Is the energy which comes from the wind. It is taken from bulk flow of water.

Water: Generating electricity by conversion of the energy of running water.

Geothermal: Is all the energy that can be taken from the heath inside the Earth.

GLOBAL WARMING

The global warming is the rise in the average temperature of

Earth´s atmosphere and oceans.

CAUSES OF

GLOBAL WARMING:

Carbon dioxide emissions from fuel.

Carbon dioxide emissions from

gasoline for transportation.

Methane emissions from animals and

agriculture.

Deforestation.

Increase in usage of chemical

fertilizers on agriculture.

EFFECTS OF GLOBAL

WARMING:

Rise in sea levels.

More killer storms (hurricanes and

cyclones).

More crop failures.

More extinction of species.

Disappearance of coral reefs.

Disappearance of coral reefs.

Gas Emissions of cars

The gas emissions of cars are considered as one of the

biggest problem of the atmosphere. The gas emissions of

cars are created by the combustion of fuels in our vehicles.

How to stop this situation?

A way to stop the gas emissions of cars is the HYBRID CAR. The hybrid car is

better for the environment because they produce 80% less pollutants and

greenhouse gases than petrol cars. With the hybrid car people save money

because they use less petrol. Some famous people concerned with the

environment have already bought and hybrid car (Leonardo Di Caprio).

Causes Of Endangerment Of Endangered Species

Habitat destruction: Our planet is changing causing habitats to be

altered, modified and destructed. The most cases of habitat destruction

are due to human activities.

Introduction of exotic species: Native species are those plants and animals that are part of

a specific geographic area, and have been part of that particular biological landscape for a

lengthy period of time. They are well adapted to their local environment and are adapted to

the presence of other native species within the same general habitat. Exotic species,

however, are interlopers. These species are introduced into new environments by way of

human activities, either intentionally or accidentally. These interlopers are viewed by the

native species as foreign elements.

Overexploitation: A species that faces overexploitation is one that may become severely

endangered or even extinct due to the rate in which the species is being used. Unrestricted whaling during the 20th century is an example of overexploitation, and the whaling industry brought many species of whales to extremely low population sizes.

YOU SHOULD KNOW:

٥ 266 of these listed species have recovery plans currently under development. ٥ There are more than 1,000 animal species endangered worldwide.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO SAVE ENDANGERED

SPECIES?

٥ Plants and animals hold medicinal, agricultural, ecological, commercial and recreational value. Endangered species must be protected and saved so that future generations can experience their presence and value.

٥ MEDICAL: Plants and animals are responsible for a variety of useful medications. ٥ AGRICULTURAL: There are an estimated 80,000 edible plants in the world. Humans

depend upon only 20 species of these plants, such as wheat and corn, to provide 90% of the world's food.

٥ ECOLOGICAL: Plant and animal species are the foundation of healthy ecosystems. Humans depend on ecosystems such as coastal estuaries, prairie grasslands, and ancient forests to purify their air, clean their water, and supply them with food.

٥ RECREATIONAL: Plant and animal species and their ecosystems form the basis of America’s multi-billion dollar, job-intensive tourism industry. They also supply recreational, spiritual, and quality-of-life values as well.

٥ Each year over 108 million people in the United States participate in wildlife-related recreation including observing, feeding, and photographing wildlife. Americans spend over $59 billion annually on travel, lodging, equipment, and food to engage in non-consumptive wildlife recreation.

ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

Actually there are many environmental organizations working on the environment. The goal

of all this organizations are to help our environment and keep it save for future generations.

Organizations are divided in

World Wide Organizations:

Earth System Governance Project

Global Environment Facility (GEF)

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

World Nature Organization (WNO)

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)

Regional Organizations:

European Environment Agency (EEA)

Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia(PEMSEA)

Governmental Organizations: They belong to different countries. They are also concerned with their environment. Here is a list of the countries that have environmental organizations.

OPINION ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

I love the environment. Unfortunately it is being damaged by umans. I think we should keep

the environment clean for many reasons: the environment is our home, it is beautiful and

future generations need it.

James, 13 years old, Atalanta.

WATER CONFLICTS

In most of the countries there are conflicts or wars regarding water.

In the world 1 of 7 people do not have access to drinkable water. A big part of these

people come from the big cities of the south.
