What Is Engineering?

o The branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building and use of engines, machines and structures. o The action of working artfully to bring something about.

Page 4: Engineering Our Planet

Did you see these?

Don’t you think that we should rethink engineering?

Page 5: Engineering Our Planet

We can do these…

• Synthetic Trees (Artificial trees which converts Carbon Dioxide into Oxygen even at night)

• To make designs which helps to recycle plastic waste.

• Develop vertical farming.• Avoid the use of toxic materials for the

environment.• Rural and urban areas can be benefitted by

sustainable planning.

Page 6: Engineering Our Planet
Page 7: Engineering Our Planet

• By this type of designs we can use engineering in good manner which is useful to nature and also protect the diversity of our planet. For this type of ideas we can make sustainable engineering. Sustainable engineering use less energy, fewer limited resources, don’t deplete natural resources, don’t directly or indirectly pollute environment or can be reused or recycle at the end of their useful life.

Why are we going to Sustainable Engineering?

The intension of sustainable engineering is to eliminate the negative effects of environmental impacts completely through skillful, sensitive designs. The engineers can do these…….. • Define sustainability.• The engineers can contribute to a sustainable

future.• List the 3 pillars of sustainability.

Page 9: Engineering Our Planet

The 3 Pillars• People– Fair practices for all people and does not exploit interest of

separate parties based on money, status or growth.

• Planet–Management of renewable and non renewable resources

while reducing waste.

• Profit– Financial benefit enjoyed by the majority of society.

Applications of Engineering

We know that and we see that the everything in our surroundings are the gift of engineering. There are many fields of engineering like… • Civil engineering• Mechanical Engineering• Chemical Engineering• Nano engineering… etc.

Page 11: Engineering Our Planet

Now we are able to construct…

Page 12: Engineering Our Planet

We can also consider Nano engineering

Sustainable Engineering

• Sustainable engineering is the process of designing or operating systems such that they use energy and resources sustainably, that is at a rate that does not compromise the natural environment, or the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Page 14: Engineering Our Planet

Engineering has spurred and led the industrial revolution. But in the process it has created important classes of problems, including:

• Human exposure to toxics in food, air, water and soil• Depletion of non-renewable resources (petroleum,

phosphorus, metals)• Raising demand for land, for housing, food production

and economic activities ( Production, retail and transportation)

• Ecosystem damage and habitat loss due to pollutant discharges

• Impact on global climate… etc.

Page 15: Engineering Our Planet

The only solution of all these problems is to develop Sustainable engineering.

Page 16: Engineering Our Planet

The three points considers in sustainable engineering are…

• Less energy intensity per unit of production

• Lower material intensity per unit of product or service

• Lower levels of environmental toxicity and risk

Page 17: Engineering Our Planet

Sustainable engineering can be done in several phases like…

• Sustainable design principles• Sustainable planning• Sustainable architecture• Sustainable energy production• Sustainable water management

Page 18: Engineering Our Planet

Sustainable Design Principles

While a practical application varies among disciplines, some common principles are as follow:

• Low impact materials: Choose nontoxic, sustainable produced or recycled materials which require little energy to process

• Energy efficiency: Use manufacturing processes and produce products which require less energy

• Design for reuse and recycling: Products, processes, and systems should be designed for performance in commercial afterlife…….. etc.

Sustainable Planning

• Urban planners that are interested in achieving sustainable development or sustainable cities use various designs principles and techniques when designing cities and their infrastructures. These include Smart growth theory, Transit-oriented development, sustainable urban infrastructure and new urbanism.

Sustainable Architecture

• Sustainable architecture is architecture that seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space. Sustainable architecture uses a conscious approach to energy and ecological conservation in the design of the built environment.

Sustainable Energy Production

• Sustainable energy is the sustainable provision of sustainable energy development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Sustainable Water Management

• Sustainable water technologies have become an important industry segment with several companies now providing important and scalable solutions to supply water in sustainable manner.

MethodologyModel on Sustainable Architecture

• We made a model of an apartment which is based on sustainable architecture and it is built in such a way that the rays of Sun fall directly through the window in morning. The shade for vehicle is consisting of solar plates, so it store the rays of sun and generate electricity and also gives shade to vehicles. After all we developed greenery around the apartment and for cooling purpose we painted the roof with the lime. By this type of architecture we help to conserve the nature. We arranged a tank which stores the rain water fall during the monsoon. Then we also arranged the bio gas plant beside of garden which produces bio gas by the waste of people living in the apartment. We sat the direction of the windows and doors in a such way that the direction of wind, that is i.e. from south – west, satisfy accordingly. By this type of planning we cooled the apartment naturally and minimized the use of electricity of AC and coolers.

We can conclude that…Traditional Engineering

Considers the object Focuses on technical issues Solves the immediate problem (now) Considers the local context (user) Assumes other will deal with politics, ethics

and societal issues

Sustainable Engineering

Considers the system in which the object will be used

Integrates technical and nontechnical issues Strives to solve the problem for the

indefinite future (for ever)

Considers the global context (planet)

Acknowledges the need for engineers to interact with experts in other disciplines related to the problem
