PRAYER OF THE WEEK Second Sunday of Advent Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: What earthly undertakings do I need to set aside so that I can set out to meet God’s Son? We regret to inform you of the death, Juanita

Guilbeau, sister of our receptionist Vanesa

Jackson. Please keep Vanesa and her family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with another

loss in their family. You will recall, Vanesa lost her mother a few months ago.

FLOWERS FOR THE ALTAR

Remember your loved ones at Christmas with a gift of flowers for the altar. With a donation of $25, we will publish

the names of those persons in our bulletins.

Because we have very early bulletin submission dates this year, look for the names in our December 26, January 2

or January 9th bulletins.

Call and Response

The beauty of Advent is in the clear calls and messages from God through prophets, dreams, and angels to people generally, and some particular people (Zechariah, Mary, Joseph) who must respond and must act on their call. Through all of them and the Advent stories, God is also speaking to us. If we use Advent as intended, we are told to Come, to Wait, to Prepare, to Rejoice by different readings and proclamations. We hear what happens in the lives of those who respond to the Lord’s calls. They end up drawing near by letting their curiosity respond to the invitation to come. They end up reflecting patiently when they await a new birth or an answer from the Lord. They prepare for journeys to another place, for a birth, or a new special name. And they rejoice – because God keeps breaking in, using unworthy but specifically prepared people to tell the story and see God’s glory. As we look to fulfillment, the response to God’s call, I draw your attention to two new parts of the story in the upcoming weeks of Advent. First, our Confirmation candidates will be Confirmed by Bishop Lombardo on Friday night, December 10. Please keep all our candidates in your prayers – especially that they may hear the call God has for each of them, and from that place in each of them that is a uniqueness given by God, that they will respond in their own unique way. Second, you know that Old St. Mary’s Filipino Community celebrates Simbang Gabi every year. Simbang Gabi is a novena (nine days of prayer, Masses and celebrations) in anticipation of Christmas. This is similar to other novenas such as Las Posadas for Central America and La Novena de Aguinaldos in South America, and other traditions in other countries where Christmas is preceded by nine days of celebrations with prayer, processions, foods, music and ultimately, Mass in the night on Christmas Eve (in the Catholic tradition). Our celebration is December 16 at 7:00p.m. This is also a very special year for the Filipino Community throughout the world as the Philippines celebrates 500 years of Catholic Faith. This year our presider for Simbang Gabi, will be Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSP. Fr. Ricky, one of my Paulist classmates, will also give a special presentation on Simbang Gabi and the 500 years of Catholicism there on Saturday, December 18 from 9a.m. to noon, here at Old St. Mary’s. This will be an Archdiocesan event; admission is $15 and will include a boxed lunch for participants when it concludes. I wish you the blessings of the season to be open to God’s many calls to you, and that your unique response will always lead you to Christ who loves you! Fr. Brad
