CRS Rice Bowl

I would like to invite each of you to participate in the CRS Rice Bowl during Lent. CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action program. It offers opportunities for your family to engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. And it’s an opportunity for us as a parish to come togeth-er as a community and reflect on what it means to live out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. During the next 40 days, we will encounter the stories of peo-ple in Guatemala, Uganda, Gaza, and other places around the world where CRS is at work. We’ll be invited to eat simple, meatless meals each Friday from these countries. And, through the stories, we’ll learn about the principles of Catholic social teaching –and ways we can put them into action during Lent and beyond. We will reflect on how an encounter with the resurrection can be transformative. We will see how our prayers, fasting, and alms-giving can give hope to those worldwide who are most in need, especially those forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities. We encourage everyone to take this journey with our parish community and to connect the prayer and reflections of each of our families to our global community of faith. I hope you will take home a CRS Rice Bowl located at the back of the Church. ____________________________________________________

Lenten Bible Study

You are welcome to attend a Bible Study on Sundays at 1:00pm at All Saints Church March 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st, and April 7th. No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion. Most of all, Catholics who take this study will encounter God’s love to the fullest. Pope Benedict XVI invites us to think of the Passion, not just as suffering, but also as the passion of a lover. For in the Cross, we see God fully revealed as “a lover with all the passion of a true love.” Jesus doesn’t want our applause. He wants our hearts. Are you ready to draw closer to Jesus in His passion than you ever have before?

Black and Indian Mission Collection

Recognizing a need to call the faithful to support missionary work among African American and Native American Catholics, the U.S. Catholic bishop established the Commission for the Catholic Missions in 1884 to administer a national collection –the first of its kind in the United States –to support missionary work. Ever since the first Collection in 1887, the Commission has administered the yearly, national Black and Indian Mission Collection. The generosity of the good People of God allows the Commission to give helpful grants to dioceses across the country to operate schools, parishes, and other missionary services that build the Body of Christ in Native American, Alaska Native, and Black Catholic communities. Please help with this mission in next weekend’s 2nd collection. Thank you.

St. Mary’s Parish Rosary Program

Please see Diane Trzpit regarding this program. There are tear-away calendars for each parishioner. You will tally the number of rosaries you prayed each day. After your calendar is full, just drop the results in the wooden box at the foyer of the Church. Monthly, the grand totals will be published in the parish bulletin to remind and encourage everyone to pray the rosary.

The Blessed Virgin Mary thanks you for your support!

Crisis of abuse in the Catholic Church

Listening & Dialogue Sessions

Listening sessions are scheduled for: March 18th at St. Mary’s Church in Westfield from 7-8:30pm; and Sunday, March 24th at

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Northampton from 6-7:30pm. Day of Prayer For Healing And Reconciliation

As part of a diocesan-wide effort to address the abuse crisis through prayer and action, on the first Monday of Lent, March 11th, Springfield Bishop Mitchell Rozanski has asked that all Catholic Churches remain open throughout the day for a “Day of Prayer for Healing and Reconciliation.”

Prayer Services

On Sunday, April 7th at 2:00pm, there will be two diocesan Prayer Services for Healing, in response to the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. The prayer services will be held simultane-ously at St. Michael’s Cathedral, 254 State Street, in Springfield and at St. Joseph Church, 414 North Street, in Pittsfield. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear friends in Christ, Ash Wednesday this year falls on March 6th. In my time here in the Diocese of Springfield, many priests have shared with me experiences of people returning to the prac-tice of their Faith through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I thank you for being ministers of reconciliation and healing, par-ticularly for those who have felt hurt by the Church in any way. The Lenten Season is a great reminder to us of our calling to reconcile and start anew in our relationship with God and our brothers and sisters. I pray for that time of grace for all of us ministering in the diocese of Springfield and am grateful for the efforts of scheduling Penance Services that inspire our people to make use of this sacrament. During Lent, Catholics, who are between the ages of 18 and 59, undertake at a minimum two days of fasting: Ash Wednes-day and Good Friday. To fast means to take just one full meal with two smaller meals and no eating between meals. Addition-ally, every Catholic 14 years and older is to make Ash Wednes-day and the Fridays of Lent meatless days –days on which no meat of any kind is eaten, days of abstinence. Ash Wednesday is a time for acts of penance and alms-giving, helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. A visible sign of our Lenten practices comes on Ash Wednesday when the ashes mark a sign of the cross on our forehead to re-mind us that our frail human nature needs the saving power of Christ. The imposition of ashes, fasting, and abstinence from meat are outward signs of the work we seek to do during Lent: to make our interior dispositions more of what Christ would have us be. Each of us is asked, as well, to undertake particular pray-ers, actions, alms giving, mortifications, and self-sacrifice to help us grow in our understanding of all God has done for us. A special undertaking can be the Rice Bowl program –a sacrifice by each of us for those who never have a full meal. May this Lent be for each of us a time of growth in our rela-tionship with Christ and with others and may it be a time that we find ourselves more fully in concert with all that God calls us to be. With every best wish, Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski, Bishop of Springfield

Lenten Regulations

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat as well as days of fast, when only one full meal is allowed. On days of fast two other meatless meals may be taken ac-cording to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

2. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. 3. The obligation to abstain from meat begins at fourteen (14)

years of age. 4. The obligation to fast begins at eighteen (18) years of age

and ends at fifty-nine (59) years of age. 5. Although the faithful may

excuse themselves for a just cause form these laws of fast and abstinence, there is an obligation to substitute anoth-er penance and no Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation in the Lenten season.

St. Mary’s Weekly Offertory Envelopes

We are in the process of updating our data entry system for our weekly envelopes. There are approximately 60 parishioners that have envelope numbers over 4 digits long. We are needing to assign these 60 parishioners with shorter envelope numbers. On the next mailing of our weekly envelopes for the April/May 2019 date, these parishioners will notice that they have a new envelope number. For those of you who received a new number, please be reassured that any weekly donations that you submit-ted from January to March in 2019 will to transferred over to your new number. Thank you for your understanding in this matter and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the rectory.
