THE SACRAMENTS

About 70 years ago, when I was about 10 to 12 years old, I remember my grandmother made homemade blackberry wine. About every other week, we would take a pint of it in a brown paper bag and give it to the Sister in the lower kitchen. In exchange she would give us the best homemade bread in very large loaves to share with everyone in the family. I don’t remember the Sister’s name, but I can s!ll taste that delicious bread. *Memory of Shar Gerber Gillen The sisters followed the Rule of St. Benedict, or maybe his twin sister, St. Scholas!ca– Ora et Labora-”Pray and Work”. They also did an awful lot of singing—mostly Gregorian chants. I used to love hearing this prior to many of the services for which I would be there.

I know that at least one of them made lots of great cookies. I’m sorry, but I can’t remember all the sisters’ names. I should recall hers, since I would occasionally no!ce her waving to me from a refectory window as I was leaving the chapel. At those moments, she would hand me a batch of her cookies through the open win-dow –s!ll warm and powerfully delicious. Every Christmas, Easter and maybe a few other days all of the altar boys were showered with holiday goodies from more than one of the nuns.

*Memory of Alcuin Dornisch.

Dear people of St. Mary’s, The Solemn Feast of Corpus Chris! celebrates the mystery of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. In this mystery JESUS offered His own body & blood [Himself] in

sacrifice on the Cross for us and for all sinners AND JESUS, on the evening before He died on the Cross, in the same saving ac!on, ins!tuted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. He did this so that we personally might be able to share [par!cipate] in His sacrifice every !me we receive JESUS’ Most Holy Body & Blood in His Holy Eucharist at what we call, Mass. The Sacred Scripture readings today remind us of the sacrifices of animals in the Old Testament covenant [Exodus 24:3-8]; and also that in the New Testament covenant, Christ offers His own blood to redeem us of our sins and our transgressions under the first covenant [Hebrews 9:11-15]. And, in the Gospel [Mark 14:13-16,22-26], JESUS presents Himself as the Passover Lamb [GOD’s Lamb] as He first offers His own flesh and blood to His Father in heaven, and then to His disciples as JESUS celebrated the very first Holy Mass [Holy Eucharist] on the night before He died on the Cross. When JESUS offers His blood and body, we need to know and recall that in the biblical world blood was sacred, blood is life. From the beginning animals were offered in sacrifice. But with the offering of the body and blood of Christ JESUS, a new rela!onship has been entered into with our GOD. Through JESUS’ gi% of His body and blood, salva!on was won for us and His body and blood is present to give us a share in the fullness of life with the Father in Heaven. How do we respond to what Christ JESUS has done and con!nues to do in our midst—at each and every celebra!on of the Sacred Mysteries, the Holy Mass? Let us pray: “GOD, help us to be in awe every !me we come to Your celebra!ons of the Holy Mass. And, help us to enter in to Your Mysteries and be transformed by them! Help us to know that we are not worthy to receive You, but it is by Your Word [JESUS] that we will be healed.”

MEANINGFUL MEMORIES #11

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT…LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF.

Along with ”Considera!on” and “Understanding”, we humans need to be respected as precious individuals as we walk among our brothers and sisters. We are traveling through turbulent !mes, and the need has never been greater for peace and love to be extended wherever we go.

This past 2020 Christmas, the St. Mary’s Parish gave all parishioners a gi% bag with assorted items that included a booklet containing daily prayerful quotes from Mother Teresa of Calcu#a. The quote for May 25 seems par!cularly appropriate. In it she says:

“Choose the way of peace. Let us not use bombs and guns to overcome the world. Let us use love and compassion. Peace begins with a smile. Do it for peace. Let us radiate the peace of God. In this way let us set the world alight with His light and ex!nguish all hatred and love of power. Peace in the world, yes, but first peace in our hearts. Do you have peace in your heart today? If not, Why not?”

We are daily bombarded with so many hate-filled and disparaging remarks, in the news media, television and radio, as well as heated conversa!ons amongst acquaintances. When this happens, start with a smile, and extend your warmth wherever you are. It’s contagious. Think of the beau!ful song…”Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me”. We have the daily opportunity to live it. Don’t think about, DO IT !!!

There is another “li#le di#y” I remember my Dad o%en used to demonstrate the need for each person to be more considerate of everyone we come in contact with, no ma#er how unpleasant a situa!on might seem. Perhaps you also might have heard it. It goes like this:

There’s a lot of good in the worst of us… There’s a lot of bad in the best of us… And it ill behooves the most of us To ever find fault with the rest of us.

It’s as though each person we encounter is like an unopened gi%, and we can help bring out the goodness that is sparkling within them, just wai!ng to be released. Not only can we make our world a be#er place, as we struggle to get back to “normal??”, but we can actually come through this crisis as a be#er person, a be#er friend, and a be#er ci!zen in our beloved Unit-ed States of America. May God con!nue to watch over us and bless us with His Peace.
