When there is human tragedy or natural disaster we often find ourselves raising this particular question: Why would an all loving and powerful God permit so much evil and suffering in the world? Some events that come to mind are 9/11, the tsunami in Indonesia that killed over 200,000 people, and other events. There are three principles. First, God does not cause these things, he permits them to happen. We need to recognize that God did not create evil. We experience evil wherever there is an absence of good, which comes from God. Second, they are a wake-up call to remind us that we live in a fallen world. All suffering or natural disasters can be traced back to Original Sin. So we have to turn to God. Third, we have to keep in mind that God makes good come out of evil. For example, people send in contributions where there is immense flooding of any sort. First responders at the World Trade Center were heroic. So God by his inspiration makes good come out of evil. So these are the principles we have to keep in mind in thinking why God allows evil to happen. He doesn’t cause it but He permits it to happen and then He brings good out of evil.

“With infinite power God could always create something better. But with infinite wisdom and goodness God freely willed to create a world “in a state of journeying” towards its ultimate perfection.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 310)

We don’t live in a perfect world. However, one day all things will be restored in Christ and all evil will be overcome.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE AT THE GRANITE CITY ABORTION FACILITY - PEACEFUL PRAYER TO END ABORTION

SAVE THE DATE!! St. Mary's has adopted Sunday, October 24 as our day to pray for an end to abortion, specifically at the "Hope Clinic for Women" in Granite City. This is not a sidewalk counseling ministry, and it is not a protest. It is a visible ministry of on-site prayer and penance, as well as prayer and penance on our own, throughout the 40 days. The Fall “40 Days for Life” campaign began Sept. 22 and ends Oct. 31. To learn more about the 40 Days for Life movement, please visit: www.40daysgc.com. Look for signup information in the coming weeks!

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Focus: God has joined us to one another and to himself. When we bring our questions, doubts, and concerns to God, even when we try to challenge him with the letter of the law, he responds in love, by revealing his plan of salvation. This plan is lived out in the sacrament of marriage, and in joining ourselves in faith and love to God no matter our state in life.In the first reading, God creates a suitable partner for the man – a woman. The man calls her bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. In the Letter to the Hebrews, the author writes of the one who, “for a little while” was made “lower than the angels,” that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In the Gospel, the Pharisees ask Jesus about the law regarding divorce. Jesus answers, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.

PART ONE - THE PROFESSION OF FAITHSECTION TWO – THE CREEDS

I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHERTHE FATHER243. The Father and the son revealed by the spiritBefore his Passover, Jesus announced the sending of "another Paraclete" (Advocate), the Holy Spirit. At work since creation, having previously "spoken through the prophets", the Spirit will now be with and in the disciples, to teach them and guide them "into all the truth".68 The Holy Spirit is thus revealed as another divine person with Jesus and the Father.

TRAVELING MARY IS BACK!!What is it??The traveling Mary, Our Lady of Grace statue is a tool to encourage families to come together to pray for vocations and to encourage young people to be open to the priesthood or religious life. The aim of the traveling Mary statue is to help the parish families become more aware of the need for vocations and of the possibility that God may be calling a member of their family to serve the Church in this way. Vocations become a normal conversation topic in the household, and individuals are able to learn more about the beauty of vocations. How it WorksFamilies sign up to host Mary, Our Lady of Grace statue for one week (Sunday – Friday), gathering around the statue daily and using the Lanterian Prayer booklet to pray for vocations along with any other prayers of their choosing. The family will be invited forward to pick up the statue after the announcements, just before the final blessing. They will then return the statue to the parish office on the following Friday so it can be passed along to another family within the Sunday masses. If the parish office is closed, please drop the statue off at the rectory. Families who hosted the statue do not have to be present at the mass where the statue is passed on to another family. Please call the parish office at (618) 465-4284 to schedule a time for your family to spend with Mary.
