FROM THE PASTOR

Disaster Relief

I am grateful for the generous response of giving to help the people affected by the hurri-

canes this fall. The devastation has been massive. We have partnered with Hardison UMC

to send a truck load of water to the areas of need. Thanks to Greg Butcher who has offered

his truck, fuel and driver for the transport. Many of you have given other gifts to UMCOR

Disaster Relief of which 100% goes to the need and not to administration.

Five-gallon buckets are available at the church for families, groups and individuals to as-

semble flood buckets which are used to clean up homes that have been flooded. Copies of

the instructions for putting them together will also be available. It is important to follow the

directions explicitly.

First UMC is growing again.

It is exciting to see our newest adult Sunday School class getting off to a great start. The

group meets in the Fellowship Hall at 9:50am each Sunday led by Lisa Prillaman. You are

welcome to come check them out.

Our nursery and preschool children are growing in numbers and we need to add another

adult volunteer to serve in the 10:55am service. We are blessed to have Holly Sinopoli and

Anita Pulaski as our paid workers. They alternate Sundays and serve for both worship ser-

vices and during Sunday school. Wink Hendricks volunteers every Sunday for the 8:45am

service. Tiffany Evans, Sandra Boyette and Megan Markland are Sunday school teachers for

the babies and pre-schoolers. More volunteers are needed to assist in the 10:55am service.

Please sign-up when given the opportunity or contact Patsy Brewer, our worship chairper-

son. The nursery ministry to our precious little ones provides peace of mind to parents who

appreciate the opportunity to be nurtured in worship.

Lots of great opportunities for ministry lie ahead in the month of October. I look forward

to serving the Lord with you.

Pastor Glenn

Deep Roots Community Garden ( Miracles Grow)

It is hardly possible to believe that we are headed into our last official garden month of the season.

Where has the time gone? We have so many, many people to thank and so much to be thankful for. If

we miss any of you by giving an official thank you for all that you have done for us, please forgive us!

Our list is long and our hearts are overflowing with your generosity.

Where would we be without Giff Basham and Jim Henderson who have kept the gardens neat and look-

ing well? We also want to thank Ray Sells who is the newest member of our garden group. Ray is at the

Storehouse location garden at least three days a week always willing to do whatever needs to be done!

Thank you to young Daniel Dzierzewski and his group of boy scouts and friends who completed our

beautiful new stairway to the Clement garden . What a great job they did!

Thank you to all my ladies and men who have helped faithfully at each Deep Roots Dinner, Nan Neal,

Alice Hanes, Sarah and Don Wood, Beth and Daryle Dixon, Kristen and John Paterson, Wink Hendrix,

Wanda Bowles, Laura Flanagan, Jerry Cozart, Cathy McClamrock, Nancy Payne, Chinera Latham, Susan

Myers, Melanie Holloway, Carolyn Cartner, Jennie Turner, Nancy Harpe, Vickie Hendricks, Doris Miller,

Donna Henderson, Patty Harris, Mary Angell, Baylie and Jennifer Smeeton, Barbara Basham, Dorothy

Corriher, Betty Ward and most especially Dave Salmon. He and Sarah made the kitchen hum!!

Thanks also for our faithful ladies of the newspapers. We depend on them to keep our soil soft and

pliable, Betty Foster, Carolyn Cartner and Wink Hendrix, and where would we be without Tommy Dunn,

Rev. Glenn Myers and Teresa Lakey! They have been a most valuable part of our functions.

Grady McClamrock, Scotty Seaford, Jeff Eaton, Weathered Rock, Rustin Wallace, Bruce Pennington of

Lowes, and Tom Brown of Davie Farm Service, have donated their time and/or equipment to keep us

running smoothly. Phillip Morris, Eddie Milholern and Johnson Irrigation Service have worked hard to

get our Clement garden water system up and running and Mike Barnhardt has done a wonderful job for

us through his newspaper. John Collins keeps the Storehouse garden lawns in great shape!

A special thanks to Alice Hanes and Sarah Wood for their help with our newly formed cooking classes

and to Sarah Wood and Beth Dixon for teaching our gardening classes both to adults and children.

As of this time our total of donations given to needy organizations is at 2253 pounds, up 703 pounds

from last year and we still have our fall gardens to include. God has been good to us! We battled many

new critters this year, but God saw fit to help us increase just the same!

God is good all the time! All the time, God is good! Thank you all!

Deep Roots Garden Committee

Happy Fall! AFTER SCHOOL is in full swing and we are blessed with over 15 children in our

program. We send 7 children to children's choir on Tuesdays, pack backpack food bags

for SDMS on Wednesdays, have chapel with Mrs. Natalie on Thursday, and Fridays we

are excited to have a partnership with 4H, guests from church lined up and lots of other

fun activities planned. Remember, if you want to join us on a Friday we would LOVE to

have you. This is a GREAT way for the kids to get to know those that support this ministry

and put a familiar face to names if they visit for church or events. We have open enroll-

ment if you still need after school care for after school care. Our number is 336-753-1900

In Matthew 25, Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was

thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in…”

We have many opportunities to respond to Jesus’ great love by showing that love to oth-

ers. Stephen Ministry is one way our congregation shows that love to people who have

deep needs for lay, Christian care.

Testimonials from other congregations:

I thank God, every day for my Stephen Minister. I don’t know how I would have made it

through the past year without her.

Before I had a Stephen Minister, I struggled with whether I even believed in God. Now I

have seen God’s love face-to-face through my Stephen Minister. It is life changing.

As a man, I found it difficult and awkward to reach out for help. But I’m glad I did. I

probably could have made it alone, but it sure was a lot easier having a Stephen Minis-

ter to talk to.

All I can say is thank you. I was so overwhelmed I didn’t know where to begin. My Ste-

phen Minister helped me sort through my challenges and regain my faith in God.

Notes from Tommy …… It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since I started leading worship and music with the Praise Band at the early service on Sunday mornings. As the band leads us in worship each week, I hope you are blessed by their skills and talent! That being said, I have a vision to increase the musical scope of the early service to include a choir, i.e. MORE SINGERS! I know there are those who would like to join us, but sometimes the thought of singing into a microphone is not what you have in mind. Therefore, I would like to begin a ensemble/choir—to sing at the early service WITH the band that’s already in place. This mu-sical group will not sing traditional choral music. I would like to do songs of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Maranatha Singers, Integrty music and the list goes on! I would like for you to think about your involvement and pray that God will lead you with your talents to join us in this new endeavor! If you’re already in the Chancel Choir and would like to sing at BOTH services, you’re welcome! If you have contemplated the idea of singing in a group, you’re welcome! All are welcome! Your input is important! Please email me at [email protected] for more information and to let me know you’d like to participate. This group will kick-off in January 2018. We will need to decide on a rehearsal schedule that works best for all! Tommy
