From the Pastor

The last Sunday of April was exciting as we recognized our 2016 Confirmation class and received five of them into full membership in our Church. The following participated in the class that began in early Jan-uary: Jackson Clark, London Dirks, Kaitlyn Foil, Bradley Harris, D.J. Hatley, Ryan O’Connor, and Reece Yount. I appreciate the mentors who worked individually with the confirmands to encourage and sup-port them on their faith journey. I hope you will be in worship on May 1 as I welcome Pastor David Kelly from Honduras. He is a local church pastor and works with the Carolina Honduras Medical Teams that come to work and serve in Honduras. He and Dr. Joel Edwards have been working together to bring much-needed medical service to the people of Honduras. I look forward to participating in the next medical mission team leaving in late June. On Monday, May 2 at 6pm we will offer a Welcome Class for those who have recently joined, are considering joining or just want to know more about our church. Please call the church office to let us know you are coming. May 8 will be a day of celebrating our Moth-ers and recognizing the youngest and oldest mothers. We will also baptize Walker Thomas Evans, son of Matt and Tiffany Evans. Our church cleanup day will be on May 14th. We want to clean out the many things that we have in storage, but have not used recently. If you or your group have things in storage and cannot be there that day, please do your cleaning in advance and identify it as having been purged. Sunday, May 15 is Pentecost Sunday. Our children will help us make it a day of celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. On Sunday, May 29 we plan a Fifth Sunday Brunch dur-ing the Sunday School hour in the Family Life Center, and we will welcome and celebrate all those who have joined our church in the past year. Our Building Committee has met and is planning to identify and work with an architect to develop plans to help us meet the objectives we have identified for us to re-main relevant and effective in the years to come. Let us be in prayer that we will be exactly the church God desires us to be. Also be in prayer for the General Conference of the United Methodist Church that meets in Portland, Oregon May 10-20. Updates can be found at www.umc.org. Blessings,

Pastor Glenn

DEEP ROOTS COMMUNITY GARDENS

Miracles Grow

As we look forward to another month – (They are passing by so quickly!) we at Deep Roots continue to find miracles in abundance coming from this church and our wonderful community! Sarah Carter, one of our Early College students did a miniature square foot garden display to demonstrate to her class how we put together the soil in our raised beds. She was hoping to put some plexiglass along one side of the project so the students could see the division of the soil,

compost, straw, newspaper, etc. Mr. Freddie Brewer stepped forward and attached the plexiglass to her project and did it without charge! Sarah was so thankful as were all of us! Just another wonderful display of Christian behavior on the part of our church! Mr. Jesse Ledbetter, a young teacher at the Davie High School also donated enough plants to fill 5 raised beds at the Storehouse garden and plant-ed them for us! Thank you, Jesse! Rebekah Brown also donated many, many plants that she started from scratch for us! This is her second year of doing that for us! Thank you Rebekah! On April 9th Sa-rah Wood held a class for Parents/Children at our Clement Garden sponsored by the Cooperative Ex-tension. We had close to 30 people that attended that class! Sarah was amazing!!! On April 16th we held our first garden work day. We spread wood chips at the Clement Garden and at the Storehouse garden, painted a compost bin donated to us, stained fence markers, got rid of debris and set up our picnic table area! Again, we had about 12 different people at each garden participating in that won-derful work day, including the boy scout troop 732 from Advance, Tess and Katy from the high school and Sarah from the Early College. Thank you all so much! Hope Cain from “Righteous Way” painted a beautiful quilt sign that will grace our Storehouse garden! We do not have it displayed yet, but you will have to take a look soon! Melanie Holloway made a beautiful stepping stone for the Clement Gar-den and displayed it at our dinner held on April 20th in honor of Earth Day! Melanie inscribed a poem on the stone and it touched me deeply as it was the very same poem that was read at my father-in-law’s funeral! He was a Dairy Farmer, and it is his truck that I drive back and forth to the garden! Dave and Betty Poteat donated a new wheel barrow, soaker hose and sprinkler to our gardens! They also helped tremendously with the collecting of 5-gallon pails for us last month! Thanks so much! Laura Flanagan donated the use of her wheel barrow for the summer and continues to supply us with egg shells for our compost bin. Laura is one of our Clement gardeners and is the wonderful lady that does the baking at Ketchie Creek! April 20th was our last dinner for this early Spring season. We will pick up again in August after the busy garden season begins to slow down! We cannot thank all of you enough for your support. Never once did anyone say “no” when we called for donations of any kind. The food donations especially, were soooo good! Truly, God is good to us!

Thank you from the bottom of our roots!!

Newsletter Deadline for June/July

The next newsletter will be combined for June and July. The deadline

for information for this newsletter is Monday, May 23rd. The newslet-

ters will be mailed on May 26, 2016. Please adjust accordingly. The

August newsletter will be mailed on July 28.

May is a busy month for families! Field trips, concerts, testing – all those activities that wind up another year of school. As everyone knows, it is a very busy time! How can we keep our faith focus with our family when we seem to be pulled in so many directions? Remember the little things! May is often a month when we start to look for flowers and signs of new life all around us. This month, when you see a flower, stop and talk to God with your child(ren): “God, thank you for flowers. Help us remember that we are growing too. Guide us as we grow, sharing your love with others.” Be thankful! Make batches of munch mix with your children , package it in small bags, add a note of thanks, and give it to people who are helpful to your family (school staff, mail carriers, librarians, neighbors, baby sitters, trash collectors…) On May 8th participate in the Pentecost Workshop. Talk with your children during the week about Pentecost and then return to worship together on May 15th, Pentecost Sunday.

Monday, May 16 – UMW Covered Dish Meal

All ladies are invited to attend a UMW Covered Dish meal at 6:00 pm on Monday, May 16 in the Family Life Center. UMW’s primary focus this year is local poverty and hunger. Our guest speaker will be Rev. Beverly Gaska, interim pastor of Union Chapel UMC on 601N, Mocksville. Beverly is a retired Methodist minister who has worked for many years with the homeless. A couple of years ago she started a pocketbook minis-try for homeless women as she volunteered with women at New Story Shelter in Winston-Salem on Trade Mart Blvd. You might wish to bring a pocketbook (filled or unfilled) with you to the meal. Rev. Gaska’s idea is to provide some basic items but keep the purses lightweight.

Krystal Dumas of Just Hope has agreed to be a distributor for our pocketbooks and she has been invit-ed to speak briefly.

Sherri Hendrix will share with us regarding their work with Family Promise of Davie County and the plans that are underway for providing shelter for the homeless in Davie County. Following the meeting, some circles will break into their regular monthly meetings.

Some items you might include in a pocketbook: travel size shampoo and conditioner; sanitary supplies for ladies; sanitary wipes; purse size tissues; comb; small tube of toothpaste and a tooth-brush.

Sunday, May 29 – 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center

A Habitat house is being built for our custodian, Natalie Sanders and her family. Their plan is to move into their very first house in mid-May (Hillcrest St. off Campbell Rd. across from Central Davie). On Sunday after-noon, May 29, UMW is sponsoring a floating housewarming. The entire Sanders family is invited: husband, Chuck, and their children (Lilly-11 and Jake-8 years old). Please join us as we show them how special and loved they are by our entire church family. Natalie has registered at Target under college registry (since there is no housewarming option on Target’s registry). This is not a shower so ladies, please bring your hus-band and children as we share the Sanders family’s excitement. Teresa West, UMW President
