THOSE WHO SERVE SEPTEMBER 2016 From the Pastor

As school schedules resume and the weather begins to change we move into a new season in the

Church year. September 18-20 we look forward to our Annual Sprinkle Preaching Mission. This year

we welcome Dr. James W. Moore as our guest preacher. As Minister in Residence at Highland Park

United Methodist Church in Dallas Texas, he spends his time teaching, preaching and writing. Dr.

Moore retired from St. Luke’s UMC in Houston, TX after a successful 22-year tenure as senior minister.

In addition to our Handbell Choir, Children’s Choir and Chancel Choir we will welcome guest soloist,

Celia Whitler from Nashville, TN. She and Dr. Moore will have special time with our youth and she will

lead a pre-service sing-a-long starting at 6:45pm each evening.

On Monday and Tuesday at 5:30pm a meal will be provided to make it easier for families to attend.

We will conclude the month with a joint, outdoor worship service at 10:30am on Sunday, September

25 on the new lot we recently acquired next to the Family Life Center. We’ll have special music and a

great picnic.

I hope you will look around for people in your sphere of influence to invite to these special services or

any of our regularly scheduled services and activities. Let’s be:

CHRIST-CENTERED SPIRIT-EMPOWERED OTHER-FOCUSED

Anticipating great blessings,

Pastor Glenn

We want to make you aware of two significant staff changes: John Huneycutt feels that the Lord is leading him in a different direction in his ministry and he has submitted his letter of resignation effec-tive Sept.15. John has faithfully served our church for the past 6 years. John, Tracy and Reid have been a vital part of our church family and we wish them God's best in every way. Megan Seaford is leaving our After School program for another position while she continues her college education. Megan along with Allison Gupton started this program, and we are grateful for her many im-portant contributions. We wish Megan and Jacob the very best in their service to the Lord.

CELIA WHITLER is a singer-songwriter who makes music in a

wide variety of venues both sacred and secular. Celia communicates with a powerful and unique voice as she tells stories and sings songs with an intimacy that captures the listening community. Celia most often travels with a single acoustic guitar, but also takes bands composed of three to eight musicians.

As a performer, music and worship leader, Celia has sung more than a thousand concerts and events for groups numbering from 1 to

37,000, covering 45 states and Europe. Celia sings for a variety of events including concerts, concert se-ries, women’s events, worship services, retreats, corporate events, camps, local church, regional and na-tional gatherings of all ages, seminary, workshops on writing and worship leading, and christian retail per-sonnel. She has provided leadership at the national level for: the United Methodist Church; the Lutheran Church, ELCA; Christian Church, Disciples of Christ; Acteens, Southern Baptist Girls; the American Bap-tist Church and Group Publishing; and an ecumenical gathering of denominational youth leaders. As a recording artist, Celia has released eight independent recordings to date. Five of those are still in print. Follow the cds link for more information. She also sang on a Thomas Kincade recording.

As a songwriter, Celia writes both Christian and secular songs. She writes many of the songs that she records. She performs regularly at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, the premier songwriters venue in Nash-ville. Celia recently co-wrote an anthem for choir (SATTBB with solo and congregation) with Ken Medema. Visit the choral link to hear a performance or to learn more about the anthem. Several of her songs appear on recordings released by Oregon Catholic Press and other sing-a-long projects.

As an author, Celia has written three books. Two were published in February 2009. Follow the “author” link left to learn more. “On the Way to Somewhere” was published by Abingdon Press in April 2006. All three books include an audio CD of original music. Follow the author link to learn more about “On the Way to Somewhere”. She has written several curriculum pieces (and songs): “Firelight”, a middle school curricu-lum for Augsburg Fortress with 5 songs; “A Time to Praise”, a Cokesbury youth worship curriculum. Celia is currently working on two books. Stay tuned for more information on these upcoming releases. We welcome Celia to our Sprinkle Preaching Mission September 18-20.

FROM THE ADVOCACY CENTER Thanks to your gifts to the Pastor's Discretionary Fund and to our budget you enable us to extend the love of Christ to people in need in our community through the Advocacy Center. We helped a family whose husband's job ended and got behind on rent, a young man who lost his job, is starting another and got behind on rent, and a family that moved to the county after their house burned in Salisbury. Our contributions are given as direct assis-tance. The director works with other helping agencies in the county to counsel the clients in their time of need. Thanks for your generosity.

We are in full force for Before and After School Care! We ended up serving 39 kids over the course of the sum-

mer!!! YAY God that we got to impact so many kids and families and a huge THANKS to you all for your continued pray-

ers and support. We are still taking registrations for before and after school care and would love to have your child or

grandchild. We offer daily: snack and devotion, homework help, outside time, free play and more! We also offer

weekly/monthly: missions opportunities, chapel, and more! We would love to have them! Contact Allison at 336-753-

1900 for more. Our enrollment is open all year and we offer full time and part time care! We are also looking for peo-

ple who would like to come on Fridays during the hours of 3-6pm (an hour or so) and share a talent with us, or do mis-

sions, or an arts or craft project, etc. Please let Allison know if you would be interested! Allison

From Deep Roots Community Garden Committee

Hope everyone is surviving this 90 plus heat wave that seems to have found a new home here! Now this is heat!!!

In spite of it all, the gardens seem to be doing well! We have finished picking our watermelon and have donated 86

pounds of sugar babies . Our pumpkins came on early, and we had to pick them. Our corn has done well in spite of

the raccoons finding our patch. (30 pounds) Our tomatoes came in late, but are doing well. Jesse Ledbetter, the high

school Ag teacher actually planted cotton in our SFJ garden this year to show his students what it looked like and how

difficult it was to pick. In spite of my eager hands to get rid of “weeds”, most of his crop was saved and is doing well!

In addition to our donations to the Storehouse and Just Hope, we have added the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-

Salem. They cook for the parents of the children at the House and a member of our “Y” asked Dave if we would have

any produce that they could use for these dinners. We were only too happy to add them to our list. We would like to

add that we will be more than happy to donate veggies to any of our church organizations especially those who hold

Wednesday night dinners. Just contact us. We will be more than happy to donate the produce. We are planting,

beets, carrots, Kale, Spinach and lettuce for the fall season so please just let us know . We have a new gardener. Bren-

da Freeman. She is a volunteer at the SFJ. She lives at Willow Pond and has asked us to help them start a small com-

munity garden for their residents. Part of our mission is to help other groups get established with their own communi-

ty gardens, so we delighted to help Brenda out!

Our Clement Garden work day was Saturday, August 20th. We had seven members attend: John Jdecki, the boy scout

leader from Advance, Laura Flanagan, Jim Henderson, Nancy Payne, Beth Dixon, Dave and myself, but we had more

help in the background. We were putting another layer of wood chips down ( donated by Seaford Lumber) inside the

entire garden. Cardboard is put down before the wood chips to help keep out weeds.. Carolyn Cartner and our

Mocksville Wal-Mart provided all the cardboard that was needed. We thank them all so very much! We need to give

Giff Basham, Bill Bowers and Dave Salmon a very big thank you for taking such good care of both gardens. Giff over-

sees the Clement Garden on a daily basis and keeps the lawns mowed. Bill has been our man at the Storehouse for

Jesus garden. He has kept us roto-tilled and weeded all summer long. Dave fills in for both men when they are not

available. Thanks to all three men for giving us continued service!

Our first fall dinner that was scheduled for August 31 will be held at a later date.

God is good all the time! All the time, God is good!
