10th Anniversary Celebration

Jessica Bowen, Director, Piermont Library The Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library will hold a 10th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday,

April 9, 2017, 12 - 5 p.m., to mark its first decade in the McHugh building. The library, chartered in

1896, opened the doors to its newly built Flywheel Park location on a bright and brisk Hudson Valley

day in March 2007.

Just what has taken place in that little yellow building by the river since

that day? Come find out. Join us for featured events such as library

trivia and history at 12:30 p.m. and live music by the Old No. 7

Band beginning at 2 p.m. Other festivities include mini golf in

the stacks, tech demos, children’s art, stories and crafts, food

trucks, grounds tours, and an “Edible Books” baking contest.

Our gallery space will feature a brief history of how the

library came to be, how the current building got its name, and

how the institution continues to evolve as a community hub.

As part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration, the library is

offering two excellent naming opportunities for donors: a

donation Match Challenge and a special 10th Anniversary Path

of engravable bricks to help us “build our path” to the next ten

years. Visit piermontlibrary.org for more information on donation

opportunities, and submission forms for the Edible Books contest. The Dennis P. McHugh Piermont

Public Library is located at 25 Flywheel Park West, Piermont, NY 10968. Phone: 845.359.4595. Come

out and celebrate with us!

Life-long Learning in the Learning Lab@PRPL

John Aiello, Librarian/Learning Lab@PRPL Coordinator, Pearl River Public Library

What do a 3rd grade boy, a 92-year-old woman and a middle-aged man between jobs all have in

common? Answer: the Learning Lab@PRPL. Since our Grand Opening in June of 2016, the Learning

Lab@ PRPL has offered over 100 classes, with something for every segment of our patron population,

including: Coding with Robots for 3rd-6th grade, Intro to Website for Teens (and also for adults), Intro to

Digital Technology for Seniors, Teen Writing Workshop, Writing from Life for Seniors, Digital

Photography, Tween Math Club, Tween Chess Club, YA Book Club, YA Art Club, Intro to Google Drive,

the Hour of Code for Adults, Teen Tech Tutors, the Cyber C@fe Study Zone, and Intro to Genealogy.

Most classes have filled to capacity, and many have waiting lists. Our community has shown an

enthusiastic, positive response to the Lab and to Pearl River Public

Library’s commitment to life-long learning. One octogenarian patron

recently said of our Seniors Technology class: “Coming to

classes at the Lab makes me feel like my life is just

beginning.”

Of course, we have over 100,000 books to offer as well, but,

in the age of Google and the ubiquitous download, the

Learning Lab@PRPL is offering something that can’t be found

online: people-to-people learning and actual, as opposed to virtual,

community. Our Director, our Board and our patrons clearly see the Learning

Lab@PRPL as a vital part of our library’s future. With input from our community we to hope continue

building on the work we have started in the Learning Lab@PRPL.

PR Xchange Awards

The annual PR Xchange Awards recognize the very best

public relations materials produced by libraries in the past

year. Entries are evaluated based on content, originality, and

design by a team of experts in public relations, graphic

design, communications, and marketing who select the

winner(s) in each category.

Winning entries will be on display at the PR Xchange

program during the ALA Annual Conference 2017 in

Chicago. Awards will be presented to the winners on that

day. Award winners need not be present to win, but are

encouraged to attend.

These awards are sponsored by the Library Leadership

and Management Association's Public Relations and

Marketing Community of Practice and are overseen by the

PR XChange Committee.

For more information and a submission form, visit the

ALA website. Print entries must be postmarked by

Wednesday, March 15.
