Library Trustees’ Oaths of Office
New York State Public Officer’s Law requires all public
library trustees (but not association library trustees) to take
an oath of office within 30 days of beginning
their term of office. If a public library trustee
does not properly complete and file an oath
of office, the trustee’s position may be
deemed vacant. For more information, see
the Oaths of Office FAQ on the New York
State Library’s website.

Special Interest Group: eBooks
Join convener Kristy Lee from SUNY New Paltz and
other Southeastern New York Library Resources Council
(SENYLRC) members for an open discussion on eBooks
and other similar resources in the library. This is a great
opportunity to share knowledge about what works and
doesn’t work, and connect directly with your colleagues.
The agenda is set by the participants, and they will learn
from each other, so the Special Interest Group (SIG) is
appropriate for all, from beginners to intermediate to
experts.
Possible topics can include:
Problems and solutions with the
discovery and access of eBooks.
Best practices for including eBooks
in catalogs.
Cooperative projects in the area that
are currently underway.
Choosing the best platforms, access
models, and pricing structures.
Ideas for convincing service providers to create a
consistent product.
Sharing favorite tools for managing eBooks.
The event takes place Tuesday, January 19, from 1:30 to
4:30 p.m. (Snow date: January 29) at the SENYLRC

2015 RCLS Annual Program of the Year Awards
At the RCLS Legislative Breakfast and Annual Meeting held on Friday, September 18 Annual Awards
presentations were made. The following is a description of a program that was nominated for the the
Member Library Adult Program of the Year Award:
Program: “The Sound and Story Cube” Creator: Brian Clay Jennings, Local History Librarian
Nominating Library: New City Library
Brian Jennings first became aware of the Cube when working with Eileen McAdam of the Sound
and Story Project of the Hudson Valley on a grant while employed at the Nyack Library. It became
apparent to Brian in June 2014 that it was important to initiate an oral history program at the New City
Library when he received an award from the Orangetown Museum for
work he had done in Nyack of collecting new stories and digitizing older
taped interviews. Brian knew that bringing the Cube, a ten foot tall
portable audio recording booth, to the library was the way to make a big
splash and get things started in New City. He wrote a grant proposal to the
Library Association of Rockland County, which was approved. The
Association would match funds provided by the New City Library to
obtain the Cube and begin an oral history collection based on interviews
collected in the Cube. It was also agreed to select residents that
represented all five towns in Rockland County as part of the grant.
The Cube interviews were just the start of the library’s oral history
collection. Since the initial interviews, the library has secured an RCLS
Outreach grant to train volunteers and staff in the craft of oral history
interviewing and create a series of Listening programs. Staff have
collected 17 new interviews and will make this a part of library services that will continue to connect
the library with the community in a special way.

information; and research tips you can use and share with patrons searching for historical
records, online and onsite.
Monica Gray, Archivist, Collections Management at the New York State Archives will lead the one-
hour webinar that takes place on Tuesday, January 12 beginning at noon. A fee is charged. For more
