The Fal l in to Books

Conference, held annually in

the late fall, brings together

school and public librarians

from eight counties within the

H u d s o n Va l l e y. T h i s

collaborative event features

book discussion sessions,

ranging from picture books to young adult, a keynote

speaker covering a current library-related topic, an author

presentation and book signing and a beautifully catered

meal.

This year the event is scheduled for Wednesday, October

25 at the Best Western Plus Kingston Hotel and Conference

Center located in Kingston, NY. Award winning author

Kwame Alexander will give the author presentation.

Keynote Speaker Christopher Wyble, Professional

Development Coordinator for GLSEN Hudson Valley, will

speak on “Safe Space for Every Student: LGBTQ 101.”

NYLA PLS Awards and Scholarships

The Public Libraries Section (PLS) is currently taking

applications for New York Library Association (NYLA)

Conference Scholarships, Building Awards, and the L.

Marion Moshier/Asa Wynkoop Award for

Distinguished Librarianship. The deadline to

submit nominations for 2017 is Friday,

Youth Education Programs Funded

The American Honda Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and educational institutions

nationwide that address the areas of youth and scientific education. The Foundation’s primary funding

priority is youth education, specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics,

the environment, job training, and literacy. Grants range from $20,000 to $75,000. The annual

application deadlines are February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1. Visit the Foundation’s website

to take the required eligibility quiz and submit an online application by the upcoming deadline of

Tuesday, August 1.

The Volunteer of the Year award was established in 2013 by the Moffat Library Board of Trustees. Each year since then the award has been bestowed on an outstanding volunteer or organization that has made a significant contribution in service to the Moffat Library of Washingtonville and its pro-grams in the previous year.

Brendan Coyne, a representative of State Assemblyman James Skoufis of the 99th District attended this year’s reception and presented Maureen Knipp with a citation in recognition for her significant volunteer work for the Moffat Library.

Board President Dennis Barnett and Committee Chair Jeanne Versweyveld presented Maureen with the 2016 Volunteer of the Year Award.

Call for Nominations: 2017 NYLA SMART Awards

The New York Library Association (NYLA) SMART (Section on Management of Information

Resources and Technology) Board seeks nominations for its annual awards to be presented at the 2017

NYLA Conference. Please read the award descriptions below and send us your nominations!

SMART Ellen C. Rappaport Professional Achievement Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize the outstanding professional achievements of a current or former

member of the Section on Management of Information Resources and Technology (SMART). A recipient shall

have been a member of the Section for a minimum of three years and shall have made outstanding contributions

in one or more of the following areas: acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, collection management, conservation/

preservation, serials control, or automation. The recipient selected by the Section’s award committee will receive

a plaque and award of $100 to be presented at the NYLA Annual Conference.

The Teresa Strozik Award for Innovation in Library Technology

Teresa Strozik exemplified leadership within the New York State Library community through innovations in

technical services. In 2009, the SMART Board created this award to honor Teresa and those who follow in her

path. This award recognizes a current NYLA member for the innovative use of technology in a library or

information setting. The recipient of this award is one who embraces new and emerging technologies by

incorporating them into their work and/or programs. For the purposes of this award, technology may be defined

as traditional library technologies (cataloging, ILL, ILS, etc.) or other technologies (Web sites, communication

tools, etc.). The recipient selected by the Section’s award committee will receive a plaque and award of $100 to

be presented at the NYLA Annual Conference. The recipient will also be asked to give a brief overview of his or

her technology innovation during the NYLA Annual Conference.

A description of the candidate’s innovative use of technology, stating the benefits or impact of the

technology usage.

NYLA Dewey Fellowship Award

Apply now and receive funds to attend the NYLA Conference November 8-11 in Saratoga Springs!

SMART is one of four NYLA sections eligible for awarding the Dewey Fellowship Award to one of its

members to attend the NYLA Annual Conference this year.

Dewey Fellows are chosen based on the following criteria:

Five or more years of experience as a librarian (MLS not required)

A record of accomplishment in the library profession

Involvement in activities to advance the library community

Must be a SMART member.

The Dewey Fellowship pays for up to $1,000 of the cost of conference attendance. Additionally, each Dewey

Fellow will be acknowledged on NYLA’s website, at the conference and in the NYLA Bulletin.

Candidates must be nominated by eligible Section leadership. Contact Section leadership if you would like to

nominate someone for consideration or be considered yourself.
