HOLY WEEK ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

We will hold Adoration on Holy Thursday following our Mass of the Lord’s Supper,

from 9pm through midnight. There will be no Adoration on Good Friday. Bless you!

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY

We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from

Isaiah and Paul’s letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us “behold the Lamb of God” before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we—his Body through baptism, the church—now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph.

Our Performing Arts Ministry invites you to LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Good Friday, April 14, 2017 at 8pm in our Church

A group of faith-filled Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel parishioners gathers each year to prepare this special presentation of the Lord's journey to the Cross. Don't miss this opportunity to experience a deeper, more meaningful commemoration of Good Friday.

A NOTE FROM OUR OPERATION APPALACHIA MINISTRY

This spring we are excited to be holding our 4th Annual BEEFSTEAK DINNER & TRICKY TRAY!

Mark your calendars for the 4th Annual Operation Appalachia Beefsteak Dinner on Friday, May 12, 2017!

For the time being, we need your help! We are asking for new items to be donated so that we can make up the premium baskets for our gift auction. If you have any new items for which you have no need, please consider donating them to this important cause. Keep us in mind as you shop in the upcoming weeks and months, and

pick up an item(s) here and there to donate for this event. Your donations will be combined with others to create a selection of premium gift baskets to be raffled off during the Tricky Tray portion of this event. We also accept (and would be thrilled to receive!) full themed premium gift baskets for our auction. All donations may be brought to our parish office. We thank you for your generosity and support. If you have any questions or wish to help, contact Julia Rizos at 973-714-3748 or via e-mail at [email protected].

CHRIST’S CORNER GIFT SHOP

We invite you to stop by after Mass to check out our Easter and Confirmation greeting cards and gift items. Coming soon we'll have many gift items to commemorate First Holy Communion and Mother's Day. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: APRIL 23, 2017

Divine Mercy Sunday is the Second Sunday of the Easter season. It was named by Pope John Paul II at the canonization of St. Faustina in the year 2000, and then officially decreed by the Vatican. Jesus revealed in various revelations to St. Faustina that it was His desire that we celebrate this special feast. Jesus said, "The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy." (Diary of St. Faustina, 699)

Our Lord also revealed to St. Faustina His desire to flood us with His graces on that day: "On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon these souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy [the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist]. The soul that will go to Confession [beforehand] and receive Holy Communion [on that day] shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet." (Diary of St. Faustina, 699).

Join us on Sunday, April 23 at 3pm to celebrate this special feast day with a Prayer Service which will include a reading from the Diary of St. Faustina, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, veneration of the Divine Mercy Image, Eucharistic Adoration, and Benediction. (Confession and Holy Mass will not be included.) For more info, please visit www.thedivinemercy.org.

CERTIFICATE IN CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION

St. Paul Inside the Walls, in collaboration with Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University, is proud to offer a Certificate in Catholic Evangelization (CCE), and is now accepting applications for its 2017-2020 class.

This unique program seeks to equip Catholics to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to their homes, parishes and local communities. This corresponds with the wishes of Pope Francis, who emphasizes: "I want the Church to go out to the streets! I want us to resist everything worldly, everything static, everything comfortable, everything to do with clericalism, everything that might make us closed in on ourselves. The parishes, the schools, the institutions are made for going out."

The Certificate program offers two track options: non-credit bearing courses, or 18 credits in graduate courses through the School of

Theology. These 18 credits may be applied toward a Master of Arts in Theology. Courses include Biblical Call Narratives, Catholic Evangelization, Evangelizing Church, The Parables of Jesus, Practical Evangelization, and Prayer, Discipleship and Community. Classes meet on Tuesday evenings at St. Paul Inside the Walls, Madison, and include two Saturday sessions per semester. Please visit www.insidethewalls.org for more information and to download an application.

"The CCE program exceeded my expectations. The scope of knowledge shared was impressive and of tremendous value. From gaining greater understanding of the theological and scriptural foundations of evangelization, to navigating the practical application of principles at the parish level, this program served as a springboard for advancing the mission of evangelization throughout our diocese and beyond. “

Note: Several disciples here at ND have journeyed through this program. since it was first offered in 2012. If you would like to speak to any of them regarding their experience, please contact Cristina Folan, [email protected] / 973-538-1358, ext. 105.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION \

Now we have come to the center of the Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the

culminating event in this week’s journey of faith “The Three Days of Easter.” The origins of many of our observances, including today’s blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem.

In the late fourth century, a woman living a consecrated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich liturgies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sisters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ’s passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today’s joyous procession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer.

When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum

with worship in church and fasting at home, a very ancient tradition is within your grasp.
