SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

SHARE THE HOPE

The readings for today’s celebration of the Ascension of the Lord once again remind us that as Christians we are people of hope. In the second reading Saint Paul eloquently exhorts the Ephesians to enlighten their hearts so that they will know the hope and glory that come from being people who

place their trust in the Lord Jesus. In the story of the Ascension, recounted in the first reading, the Lord Jesus assures the disciples that the Holy Spirit’s power will come upon them. Finally, in the Gospel, the Lord lets the disciples know that their mission is to spread the hope of the gospel to all the nations. This wonderful feast keeps our eyes focused on the hope in which we were grounded on the day of our baptism.

ANTIOCH 72: TEENS EVANGELIZING TEENS

“My Antioch weekends (back in 1985-1987!), and the people I met there, had a profound effect on my life. Even though I live down the shore now, my teenage daughter attended Antioch at Notre Dame of Mt Carmel a few years ago, and had a wonderful weekend! I am so grateful for all the folks, past and present, who work tirelessly to give the gift of this weekend to so many teenagers.”

— Past Antioch Participant

Antioch 72 took place last Friday evening and all day Saturday, May 19 & 20, 2017. We were blessed to host 26 teens from various high schools! We are so grateful for God, our pastor and pastoral staff, adult and youth volunteers, our teens and their families and members of our parish who generously offered their time, talent, monetary donations, love and prayers, in support of our youth retreat. These gifts helped make the weekend the powerful faith journey it was, bringing some very special teens closer to Christ.

Please visit our website at www.ndcarmel.com (click on the Events/News tab), or visit our Facebook page (you do not have to have a Facebook account to view our content) to browse through pictures shared from this wonderful youth experience!

NOTE ABOUT OUR FOOD & CLOTHING COLLECTIONS

A couple of gentle reminders regarding our Food & Clothing collection:

Collections take place on the 3rd weekend of each month (food bags are given out by our ushers the previous weekend). In order to help us maintain our space in an organized and welcoming manner (especially during funerals which can happen any day during the week), we would be grateful if these donations are dropped off only on the 3rd weekend of the month.

To help with the transportation of donations, please use the paper bags the ushers hand out for food donations (not for clothing) and plastic garbage bags for the clothing donations.

We are always so grateful for your donations; so many in need right here in our local

community are served by your generosity!

MOMS & TOTS NOTE

Please note that our last Moms & Tots session for the school year will be held on Wednesday, June 14. We will resume our gatherings on Wednesday, September 14 at 9:30am in the Music Room. May the Lord

continue to fill your homes with faith & music for your little ones, a beautiful reminder of God's joy and presence in your lives. Have a safe and "Son-filled" summer!

DISCIPLESHIP: IT STARTS WITH YOU An excerpt from an article by by Karl Johnson, Lt. Col.,

USMC C.S. Lewis Institute Fellow

So what’s involved in this vision? Patience, for one thing. Disciples are not mass-produced. In today’s high-tempo world, we like everything fast, but it’s not enough to hold a discipleship conference. As useful as this is for training and education, it will not bring about transformation. We must recognize what Ogden describes so well in Transforming Discipleship: the most effective way to make disciples is a few at a time over time—life-on-life engagement in which we pour ourselves into the lives of others the way our Lord did with the Twelve.

We do not need all the answers. We do not need to corner the market on spiritual maturity. We simply need a vision to share our lives with others and commit to seeing them grow and to grow with them. This can be done in simple, everyday life. In fact, it’s essential that it be done in everyday life.14 This vision must reject shortcuts and focus on commitments; it must avoid expediency and insist on relationships.15 In short, it must focus on helping others conform to the image of Christ via small, quality, long-term relationships. And it must reproduce. Similar to how I learned to balance knowing with doing, we must encourage those we disciple to do likewise. The vision must not culminate in a “holy huddle.” We must move into new relationships and help others discover what it means to follow Christ, and one of our goals must be to make disciples who will disciple. That’s what disciples do. If we don’t, we’re not.
