THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

ADVENT PENANCE SERVICES

Advent is a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord. As we await, we remember that this is a time of faith in God, hope for the future, and love for one another. The Sacrament of Reconciliation offers us the opportunity to experience again the coming of Jesus as Savior and Redeemer. We will hold Penance Services on

Wednesday, December 14 at 12:30pm (following our 12:10 daily Mass) & at 7:30pm (a meditative service with music).

ANGEL TREE REMINDER

We are so grateful for the hundreds of gifts that have already been brought to our Gathering Space in support of our Angel Tree effort. What a wonderful blessing it will be to bring Christmas joy to some many families in need. Just a gentle reminder, gifts should be put in gift bags with the angel, bell or dove firmly attached, and brought back to our Gathering Space by the end of this weekend.

Seeking to revise your relationship with Our Lord? In need of physical, spiritual or emotional healing? Seeking deliverance?

Join us for a CHARISMATIC FESTIVAL OF PRAISE Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 6:30pm

in our church

A spiritually uplifting hour of prayer, praise, and worship with contemporary

Christian music, Adoration and ending with Benediction.

ND PARISH NATIVITY ALBUM

Do you have a Nativity scene displayed in your home?

Email us a photo (and caption) at [email protected]

and we will include on our website's ND Parish Nativity Album!

A Season of Hope

Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah's vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flowers holds a message for each of us.

Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consumerism that grip so

many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, this leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can't buy.

This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this season offers hope. We are told that those who are ransomed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises.

OPERATION APPALACHIA Alternative Christmas Cards

Our Operation Appalachia ministers are selling Alternative Christmas Cards after every weekend Mass in Advent. This is the perfect gift for family and friends, or anyone on your shopping list who is hard to buy for, or perhaps “already has everything they need.” When you make a donation in someone's name to our Appalachia outreach ministry, you will receive a hand drawn card to give as a gift. The card describes our ministry and how we will use your support to help rebuild the homes of the poor. Let us help you to be God's hands amongst His poor. Thank you!

SENIOR LUNCHEON REMINDER! Monday, December 19

Following our 12:10pm Mass, We look forward to seeing you!

Special reminder: We will not hold Senior Luncheons in January or February; we will resume with our luncheon on Monday, March 20, 2017.

PRAY INTENTIONALLY FOR YOUR SPOUSE

When you pray to God, your prayers are heard. There are many passages of scripture which explain this, but it’s important we don’t take it for granted. We may get frustrated when our prayers are unanswered. But, note that the Bible never says “God will

always do what you ask no matter what”. God always answers, just not always with what we want. (“No”, and “not right now” are answers too). Scripture: 1 John 5, Hebrews 4. Prayer has staggering implications on our marriages! As you pray for your spouse, make sure to pray for:

1. Their Heart: Pray that they will be receptive to conviction (teachable); that they would continue to hear God and respond. Also pray that they would be refreshed by God – being constantly given new joy, hope, peace, and love. Ask God to protect their heart from attacks and temptation (Matt 6).

2. Their Mind: Wisdom and discernment. Pray that your spouse makes wise decisions big and small; that they have a renewed mind, one that perceives and considers choices through God’s lens.

3. Their Health and Safety: Your spouse may be fighting off a sickness or working a perilous job. Pray for protection and health. Also, make sure to give God plenty of gratitude for when health and protection are evident! (Actually, give thanks always, no matter the circumstance).

4. Their Concerns: This is what compassion is all about: taking on someone else’s situation and burdens as your own. Go to God on your spouse’s behalf, taking on their concerns as your own.

5. Their Purpose: Your spouse is God’s child before your spouse. It’s your role to support your spouse in his/her God-ordained purpose by encouraging them, watching their back, offering counsel, and most of all, praying.

NOTE FROM OUR YOUTH MINISTER...

On Wednesday, January 23rd, a dozen of our Notre Dame teens, along with some of their parents, headed down to Paterson where they helped serve a Thanksgiving dinner to brothers and sisters in need! The dinner is held every year by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and serves anywhere from 100-200 people. The kids eagerly took positions serving food, drinks, and playing with the children that attended. I was so impressed by them! Everyone jumped in and worked hard, and also took the time just to be with the guests. For most of the kids and parents who came, it was their first time serving at an event like this, and they expressed a great interest in doing it again. One of the moms had given up her afternoon that she would’ve spent preparing to host Thanksgiving the next day, but she told me, “this was more important.” I am so thankful for her, and all of them that gave up their afternoon to God and to the poor.

—Stephanie Twedt, ND Youth Coordinator

Would your teen (or a teen you know) like to be involved with similar service efforts in the future? Please reach out to Stephanie at [email protected].

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

NOT SURE WHERE TO GO? WHAT TO DO?

"His will for us is far greater than anything we can dream up ourselves. A life of true faith

means freedom, hope and love, where our desires become His desires and His will becomes our

own. He wants what is best for us and He intends to give it to us. Today in prayer, focus on the

ways that God is personally calling out to you in your own life. Pray and ask God for the courage

to take action and step out in faith and truly follow where He is calling you to be."

MARCH FOR LIFE 2017: THE POWER OF ONE Friday, January 27, 2017

Thousands upon thousands of Americans flock to the Nation’s Capital every January to remember the more than 55 million Americans who have been lost to abortion. We march to remember the moms and dads who have suffered from

the pain of abortion. We march with the vision of a culture of life, one where every child is welcomed into life, and protected by law.

Join Fr. Mariuz and members of our parish on January 27, 2017 to speak out, to stand up, and to march for life! We will have a bus leaving our Notre Dame parking lot at approximately 6am and returning at approximately 9:30pm. Thanks to the generosity of our parish and the Knights of Columbus, the transportation cost this year is only $5/person for the one day trip. But please, do not let cost keep you from joining us; our parish family will help anyone pay for the trip.

If you would like to register, please fill out the form below, place it in an envelope with your payment and drop in the collection basket or bring to our parish office. We will also have sign-ups in our Gathering Space the weekend of January 7/8. If you have any questions, please contact Rosa Fanelli at 973-428-8304. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
