TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

INVITED The Good News is that we have all been invited--invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It's a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we

pray for guidance and acceptance of God's will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions.

A CATHOLIC’S DIVORCE SURVIVAL SERIES Bringing hope & healing to divorced Catholics

Divorce affects everyone, whether it's you, a family member, friend or coworker. It happens, and it hurts. This journey can help those who have gone through a divorce go from pain and loneliness to hope and healing. Practical advice meets pastoral care, with the help of experts and others who have suffered through divorce. As they witness to their pain and to the redemptive power of Christ, you will identify with their journey from heartache to healing.

The 12-week program takes place on Monday evenings, beginning Monday, September 19, 2016, 7:30-9pm here at Notre Dame. Register online at www.ndcarmel.com. If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact Patty Migliore-Torres at [email protected] or 973-610-3242, or Mike Letterese at [email protected] or 973-998-0750.

Our Regular DAILY MASS SCHEDULE resumes T T , S 6, 2016

Monday - Friday: 12:10 PM & 5 PM*

*Effective Monday, January 2, 2017, our 5:00 PM weekday Mass will change to 5:30 PM. Our Weekend Mass schedule remains the same

MEN OF OUR PARISH & NEIGHBORING COMMUNITY: SAVE THE DATE!

Have you attended Cornerstone (or some other spiritual retreat), and asked the question, “What's next?” If you answered “yes,” we invite you to save the date now for “The Road to Emmaus,” a retreat prepared and hosted by

the men's ministry of our parish. The retreat will take place Friday, October 7 to Sunday, October 9, 2016 at St. Mary's Abbey in Morristown. More details coming soon in our gathering space and on our website!

SAVE THE DATE: WOMEN'S CORNERSTONE XVII

Planning is in full swing for our Women's Cornerstone XVII retreat “Lead Me, Lord” scheduled for Friday evening, October 21 and Saturday, October 22, 2016, here at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel. We invite all women 25 and older who have never attended a Cornerstone retreat to join us for this awesome spiritual opportunity! Registration opens September 10, 2016. If you have any questions regarding our Cornerstone retreat, please visit us on our website at www.ndcarmel.com (click on Faith Formation/Adults and select Women's Cornerstone).”

WELCOME NEW STAFF MEMEBERS! We have a couple of staff changes to announce:

Parish Secretary

Our wonderful Maria Caivano has decided, with much regret, to not return as Parish Secretary after her summer away. Juggling the responsibilities of a busy staff position, being a successful realtor, and devoting the needed time to her family proved simply to be unmanageable. Now with more time available, Maria plans to not only continue to oversee the Altar Server ministry, but to become more engaged in the ministry life of the parish. We are enormously grateful for the many contributions Maria made to parish life at the “front desk.”

Please join us in welcoming our new Parish Secretary, Melissa Demianycz, who will join our staff on Monday, Sept. 12. Melissa and her family – her husband, Alan, and their children Steven, 14, and Johnny, 8 – have been parishioners since 2004. For the past 4 years, Melissa has been serving as a catechist, and has participated in Women’s Cornerstone, Discovering Christ, Vacation Bible School, and most recently, an Extraordinary Minister to the homebound. Alan has experienced the blessings of Men’s Cornerstone and Steven has been an altar server for the past 4 years. Melissa is excited about her new role serving the parish family!

Special thanks to Agnes Loughlin, who faithfully and competently serves at the Parish Secretary desk during July and August. Many thanks, Agnes! Youth Coordinator

We have made the decision to bring a full-time Youth Minister to Notre Dame, convinced that the shepherding and faith formation of our teens and young adults is literally the future of our Church and, as such, requires serious commitment and experience in leading young souls into a personal relationship with Christ.

The search can be a long and sometimes slow process in terms of finding someone who will be a good fit with our parish culture and vision, so… we are implementing an “interim plan” until we find the right person. Stephanie Twedt, a vibrant young woman who is experienced in youth ministry and discerning whether her future is in religious life, has joined us on a part-time basis. She will be working with Ivette Valori and our Antioch leaders to help us bridge the gap until we hire a full-time youth minister. Please join us in welcoming Stephanie to our parish team!

CANONIZATION OF MOTHER TERESA OF KOLKATA

Blessed Teresa of Kolkata will be proclaimed a saint on September 4th, 2016.

On Thursday, December 17th, 2015 Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate a decree regarding a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Teresa. The Pope’s approval for these decrees came during a private audience with Cardinal Angelo Amato SDB, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Blessed Teresa, known around the world as Mother Teresa was born August 26, 1910 in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire, into a Kosovar Albanian family. She was the foundress of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. It’s been almost nineteen years since Mother Teresa suffered a heart attack and died at 87 years old on Sept. 5, 1997 in Calcutta.

Mother Teresa was proclaimed blessed by her friend, St. John Paul II, on October 19, 2003. A crowning gift of the Jubilee of Mercy will be Mother Teresa's canonization by Pope Francis in 2016.

Let us ask this great woman of faith to intercede for a world at war, nations filled with fear, terror and dread. May this tiny woman and towering spiritual giant help us to open the doors of our nations, communities, homes and hearts to welcome strangers and offer them hospitality and love. May soon-to-be St. Teresa of Calcutta pray for us and teach us how to love God and neighbor in unity and harmony. May teach us how to be the face of mercy and charity in our world today.

MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT SOCIAL

Our Marriage Ministry invites married couples in our parish to come to the first of our events this ministry year, a Marriage Enrichment Social, Friday, September 16, 7:30-9pm, at the home of parishioners Pat & Mike Guarino. No schedules, no stress, no pressure, no commitments, just an evening of fellowship with other married couples! Please RSVP to Pat & Mike Guarino at 973-625-4713.

POPE FRANCIS TO MARRIED COUPLES…

Pope Francis recently listed and explained “three key words” for married couples to embrace in their every-day lives, a theme he returns to often. These three words, which Pope Francis said strengthen marriages, are “permission, thanks, and forgiveness.” Pope Francis advised spouses to seek out the opinion of the other before making decisions. He also suggested that

spouses express gratitude to each other frequently, for “the sacra-mental relationship is maintained with this sentiment of gratitude, of thanks.” Finally, Pope Francis concluded his address by empha-sizing the value and importance of forgiveness in the context of married life. The pope encouraged married persons to strive to end each day in harmony and peace with each other.

ANNUAL HAITI FOOD DRIVE IS COMING SOON!

Many of the people living in Cap-Haitien continually turn to the Missionaries of the Poor for daily food and supplies. Because of this increased demand, their food supplies are being stretched to the limit and are running low at present. As we begin the food drive in the upcoming weeks, we ask that you please keep in mind the tremendous needs of the people of Haiti and be as generous as you always have been to this ministry in the past. This year's drive at Notre Dame will take place in our Gathering Space as follows:

The cards describing the items needed for the drive, will be available the weekend of September 17 & 18, before and after the weekend Masses.

The collection of food etc., will take place the weekends of September 24 & 25 and October 1 & 2.

We are also in need of volunteers to help staff the table in the Gathering Space before and after Mass, and also to help transport the collected food to St. Matthew's in Randolph on the weekend of October 1 & 2.

Your support of this effort will be a blessing to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. If you have any questions regarding the drive, or can volunteer to help during the drive, please contact John Verga via e-mail at [email protected], or by phone at 973-714-6604.

CAN YOU HELP? Storage space needed for our Annual Haiti Food Drive!

Do you or someone you know have access to warehouse space? As you may be aware the Annual Haiti Food drive is accomplished through the support of six local parishes. The food is collected from September through mid-November when the

collected goods are shipped to Haiti. The leaders of this significant effort are looking for warehouse space to store the collections – about 1,500 sq./ft., to be available during that time frame. If needed, funds can be allocated to secure the space. Please contact John Verga at [email protected], or by phone at 973-714-6604.

COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS

The Compassionate Friends, a self-help group for bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents will be meeting on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 7:30pm, at St. Christopher's Church, 1050 Littleton Road (Rt. 202), Parsippany, Rm. 101. The guest speaker will be Grief Specialist Lisa Athens. For more information please call Lily Capriglione at 973-568-4164.
