SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

PEOPLE OF HOPE

Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are

people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today’s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth, who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope.

AN INTROVERT’S GUIDE TO EVANGELIZATION An excerpt from an article posted by “Mary” in

www.catholicsistas.com

I’m not an expert on evangelization, as I am just starting to make a more conscious effort at it. It’s been difficult for me to think about reaching out to others while I’m deep in the trenches of raising young children. I used to use this fact (along with my personality) as an excuse to avoid the mandate to spread the Gospel outside of the four walls of my home. But, lately, God has been calling me out of that mindset. Here is what I’ve learned about how to evangelize as an introvert:

Get out from behind the computer screen. If it were up to me, I’d just sit at my computer and stick to the written word as a way to reach out to others (like most introverts I know). Introverts can articulate their thoughts much better in writing. And, internet evangelization takes off so much of the pressure of social interactions. But more often than not, attempts at keyboard evangelization fail to bear truly good fruit. True evangelization requires making connections with people. And the irony of social media is that it can be a barrier to that. The internet certainly has its place (I am writing on a Catholic blog, after all). But, even in this digital age, human-to-human interaction is still the best way to make those connections and spread the love of Christ. Don’t be fooled into thinking you are doing your part simply by posting an article on Facebook or engaging in a combox debate on a theological or cultural issue.

Evangelize without words. I’ve been forcing myself lately to smile at strangers when I’m out and about. This probably seems silly to extroverts, but it takes a lot of willpower for me to do it. Generally, I prefer to keep my head down and avoid eye contact with people out in public. Though making eye contact and smiling at strangers is a lot easier than talking to them. (Contrast this with some extroverted relatives of mine who strike up conversations with everyone they meet!) When I do smile at people, some of them look at me strangely and maybe give a half-hearted smile back (probably fellow introverts!). But some of them light up, and respond with a genuinely warm smile. This small, seemingly insignificant interaction doesn’t impart any theological knowledge, but it does brighten their day and possibly make them feel more loved. This is a form of evangelization, too. Making a similar effort at warmth and kindness toward people you see on a regular basis but have no real relationship with (such as co-workers) eventually might lead to direct, verbal evangelization. They will be drawn to you and the light you exude. This will open the door for you to give an explanation for the hope that is in you. (1 Peter 3:15)

MINISTRY CONVOCATIONS

As of today, we have held two of four Ministry Convocations in the Parish Hall, with over 110 participants!

After bagels, coffee and fellowship, and then a beautiful opening reflection by Fr. Paddy, we took our renewed parish Vision and Mission to a deeper level, exploring the meaning of true discipleship and how that can flourish in the context of ministry as well as the formation of our youth. Our last half hour was spent in small group discussion, focusing on what had inspired and challenged everyone present. Several individuals shared what had been discussed at their table, while some shared their own very personal and unique experiences of conversion and discipleship.

We encourage ALL involved in ministry (not just leaders!) to attend one of the two remaining convocations scheduled for Saturday morning, June 10 or June 17. We also welcome at these gatherings anyone who wants to explore more deeply this path of renewal we are experiencing as individuals and as a faith community. Please visit our website to register for one of the remaining gatherings. The Holy Spirit is showering our ministry convocations with enlightenment, receptivity and great hope for our future!

NOTE ABOUT OUR FOOD & CLOTHING COLLECTIONS

A couple of gentle reminders regarding our Food & Clothing collection:

Collections take place on the 3rd weekend of each month (food bags are given out by our ushers the previous weekend). In order to help us maintain our space in an organized and welcoming manner (especially during funerals which can happen any day during the week), we would be grateful if these donations are dropped off only on the 3rd weekend of the month.

To help with the transportation of donations, please use the paper bags the ushers hand out for food donations (not for clothing) and plastic garbage bags for the clothing donations.

We are always so grateful for your donations; so many in need right here in our local

community are served by your generosity!

ALTAR SERVERS URGENTLY NEEDED!

Altar Serving is a wonderful opportunity for children and teens to be active in ministry and serve their parish, and it also counts toward Confirmation service hour requirements. If your child is in 4th grade or above and you regularly attend any of our weekend Masses, please consider participating in this ministry. For more information, please contact Maria Caivano at 201-602-3657, or [email protected].
