FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today’s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the

great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God!

OUR LADY OF GOOD HEALTH, VELANKANNI At Saint Joseph’s Shrine, Stirling, NJ

Staring from July 8, 2017 ~Every First Saturday~ Rosary & Healing Mass at 5:30 pm

Our Lady of Good Health (Arogya Madha) also known as Our Lady of Velankanni, is one of the names of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is believed to have appeared in Velankanni, a rural village in Tamil Nadu, India. According to the history of the people who lived in Velankanni, first, Mother Mary, carrying a child in her arms , appeared to a Hindu shepherd boy, who offered her child milk. Secondly, she is subsequently said to have appeared and healed a crippled boy who was selling yogurt (butter milk). Thirdly, a group of Portuguese sailors prayed to Mother Mary when there was a violent storm and their life was at risk; they prayed that they would build a temple to Mother Mary on the shore where they would reach safely. The current Basilica in Velankanni was constructed by the sailors who survived the deadly storm. The Basilica comes under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India, headed by Bishop Devadass Ambrose Mariadoss under the Leadership of Pope Francis.

HAVE NO FEAR

One can have a natural fear of talking to others about God. Sherry Weddell (author of the book Forming Intentional Disciples) says that before you talk to someone about God, you first have to have a relationship of trust. There must be a ‘safe place’ wherein someone feels comfortable enough to share about his or her relationship with God (or lack thereof). If you don't have that yet, then don't bring up the topic. But once this trust is in place, people are surprisingly open to what Weddell has termed the ‘threshold conversation.’ The threshold conversation is the initial step, whereby one invites another to share about his or her lived relationship with God. It could be done anywhere (e.g. a coffee shop. the back of the church, a ministry at the parish, etc.) and within the span of mere minutes (or hours, of course). What you do is simply ask a question such as: Can you describe your relationship with God to this point in your life? Or: Can you tell me the story of your relationship with God so far?

Notice how open-ended these questions are. It is more about listening prayerfully and seeking to learn what the other’s faith-journey has been like. It is not about catechizing and correcting ideas. It is not about sharing your own faith—not yet. It is not time for counseling, and it is never judgmental. The focus is on listening to the other and most especially the Holy Spirit as He prompts us with questions.

In short, the threshold conversation breaks the code of silence that often exists in our relationships with others on things related to faith in God. It raises the issue that underlies all we say and do as Catholic Christians—a personal God. It allows one to listen for the desire for God which often lies hidden in our neighbor.

Your initiative may be the first time anyone has asked that person a question about the relationship with God. Sometimes simply asking the question may begin a life-transforming journey towards Jesus—towards “the free gift” (Rom 5:15), the free gift of grace that can transform one’s life.
