Northbrook Woman’s Club Elisa Glass, President February 2015 Julie Blaszak, Editor What we have done for ourselves dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. The words above by Albert Pike impressed me. It reminds me that you, our members past and present, are leaving a legacy of service, care and kindness that will last. You give of your money and time to help the hungry (e.g. PADS, the Northfield Food Pantry), the needy (YWCA Women’s Shelter, Northfield Food Pantry), the elderly (lunches for seniors, Dec the Doors), and the sick (Blood Drive, Helping Hands, Magazine drive for Glenbrook Hospital). You bring comfort to the small and vulnerable (Project Linus, Little Dresses for Africa, Halloween Costume Drive, and Fleece for Furry Friends.) These are just a few of the many contributions you have made just this year alone pretty impressive. Trust me; you have made a difference. In this newsletter, you will find the proposed slate for the 2015-16 NWC & NWCF Board. Please look it over; we will be voting on it at the March Luncheon. My gratitude to the Nominating Committee: Karen Spooner (Chair), Kim Gruemmer, Jean Imperato, Karla Irving, Nadine Minnig, Mary Otis, and Mary Beth Smith. Nice job selecting a slate, ladies. THANK YOU!! I am looking forward to the General Meeting on February 5 th at Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook. Jen Eisen, Chef/Owner of House 406 in downtown Northbrook, will be our guest speaker. My family had the pleasure of eating at her restaurant a few weeks ago and we were very impressed with her establishment. I am eager to hear what she has to say about her experiences in the restaurant world. Want to have fun and be creative? The Typsy Paint event on February 3 rd in the Glen looks to be a fun time. Although I haven’t done it, I hear it’s a lot of fun and even those lacking artistic ability (like myself) can produce a wonderful piece of art. It’s a great opportunity to step out of our comfort zone. Finally a reminder from Charles Schultz: “All you need is love. Now Collecting Fabric Donations Little Dresses for Africa Community Project

This will be the fourth year for Community Projects' "Little Dresses for Africa". Simple dresses are made from cotton fabric and distributed through the orphanages, churches and schools in Africa to show these little girls they are worthy. This year we will add a few "Britches for Boys" which are easy pull-on shorts. We are looking for donations of cheerful cotton fabrics. If you get coupons for Hancock or Joanne's, please consider buying a yard or two of fabric to donate. These can be dropped off a Buffy's house, or call Buffy at (847) 205-0597 for a pick up. Turn the Tables Night Out Thursday, April 16th at 7 pm

Join us as Turn the Tables welcomes us into their shop at 1955 Cherry Lane in downtown Northbrook. Turn The Tables carries upscale consignment furniture and home decor. What makes the store unique is an ability to recreate furniture through decorative painting, wallpapering, and architectural embellishments on-site at their studio. Melly, the owner, will show us how to makeover a piece of furniture. You might have an old dresser in your basement or maybe you are tired of a piece in your living room. Melly will show us how to breathe new life into a piece of furniture. She will demonstrate different painting techniques to all of us. There will be goodies and drinks for you to enjoy while you look around the shop and perhaps purchase a treasure to take home with you that night. Please RSVP to one of us by April 9th!

Rusty Golfers -- Spring is really coming!

Hi current Rusty Golfers and maybe golfers-to-be! Carol Diaz and I will be organizing the league this year and want to get the word out early. We will play at Sportsman’s from early May until mid-September on Tuesday mornings starting about 8:21 until about 9:15. When we find the exact number of golfers, this will be finalized. If you played with us last year, please confirm that you plan on golfing again this year by emailing me at [email protected]. If you had not played with us, come on out! We are a very casual 9-hole league. You do not even need to keep score—just have fun! We will be getting more information from Sportsman very shortly and I will forward it to all interested parties.

Best-Selling Author to Speak at Spring Luncheon

In the spirit of Loving Frank and The Paris Wife, acclaimed novelist Melanie Benjamin pulls back the curtain on the marriage of one of America’s most extraordinary couples: Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Attend our March 7th Spring Luncheon and get the chance the hear her talk about this wonderful book!

Melanie Benjamin incorporates her passion for history and biography by writing historical fiction, concentrating on the “stories behind the stories.” She and her family live in the Chicago area; when she’s not writing, she’s gardening, taking long walks and rooting for the Cubs.

When Anne Morrow, a shy college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family, she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness.
