News from the Pastor Nominating Committee
The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) met with Neeta Nichols, our liaison from the Detroit Presbytery, Committee on Ministry. Rev. Nichols will assist us through the process of selecting our next pastor. During this meeting, Rev. Nichols provided an overview of the next steps and assisted us in understanding and how to complete the Ministry Information Form. The Ministry Information Form is much like a resume for the Church and reflects the information gathered during the Self Study. Potential candidates submit a Pastor Information Form (PIF). This information is fed into the Presbytery Church Opportunity database and matches Northbrook with possible candidates, much like an on-line dating site. In addition to receiving possible candidates through the matching, pastors can self-nominate and provide their PIF directly to Northbrook for consideration.
Over the next several weeks, we will be completing and finalizing our Ministry Information Form (MIF). This is a very important step, and we want to be prayerful and thoughtful as we complete the form that identifies Northbrook’s unique character and mission statement to Live the Love of Jesus Christ.
Prayerfully, your PNC: Kathy Bauhof, Kim Bowden-Adair, Matt Broadwell, Ken Stetson, Dave Vander Weide and Penny Willey
STEWARDSHIP 2019 - FINANCE MATTERS! Thank you to all of you who have shared in telling your stories either during worship or in
filling out the colorful "story" cards.
Please take time in the next few weeks to enjoy the stories posted around the church.
If you have not yet shared your story, you can still do so by filling out the cards available in the church office which asks the faith questions:
You will receive your pledge cards with a letter from your Finance Committee the week of
October 28, 2019.
Please prayerfully consider your own call to Stewardship as you make your commitment to the ministry and mission of Northbrook for 2020.
Consecration Sunday is November 10, 2019 at which time we will dedicate our pledges. Please bring your pledge cards to church that day.
Guest Preacher, The Reverend Rick Peters, will bring us an inspiring sermon on Consecration Sunday.
We are also going to have a time during worship that day to dedicate our new Steeple Cross.
A Thank You luncheon will be held immediately after worship on November 10, Consecration Sunday, for all to enjoy.
Why Christian? Why Northbrook? Why Give?

Finance Matters
As we enter the home stretch of the 2019 calendar year, we thought it would be nice to look back on some of the things that have taken place at Northbrook so far this year. As you browse the immensity of this collection, take a moment to realize this could not have happened without the generous financial contributions of our members.
Potlucks, Brunches and Senior Souper Lunches • Knit Wits • Book Clubs • Bible Studies • Holy Casserollers • Countless Coffee Hour Celebrations • Pub Theology • Backyard Bible & Beverage • Men’s Group • Choir • AA Meetings • LOGOS • Lock-Ins • Retreats • Senior High Mission Trip • PC(USA)’s Triennium National Youth Gathering • Summer Camp • Vacation Bible School • Movie Nights • Cornhole Tournaments • BBQs • Bingo de Mayo • Silent Auctions • Annual Golf Outing • Halloween Hoot • Trunk or Treat • Northbrook Preschool • New LED Lighting throughout the Church • Brand New Steeple Cross • DSO Chamber Concerts • Spectrum Orchestra Concerts
Let’s not overlook some of the missions Northbrook supports beyond our church walls as well:
South Oakland Shelter, Lathrup Village • Fort Street Open Door, Detroit • The Welcome Inn, Southfield • Second Mile Center, Detroit • The WORD Children’s Literacy Program at Calvin East Presbyterian Church in Detroit • The Baldwin Center in Pontiac • The Open Door Outreach Center in Waterford • Freedom House, Detroit • Gambell Presbyterian Church in Gambell, Alaska • Vallengas Ministries in Nicaragua • American Indian Health & Family Services • Rebuilding Together Southeast MI • Baby Basics of Troy Ministry • Health Emergency Lifeline Programs
In addition to the life-changing activities and missions listed above, Northbrook Church routinely hosts numerous local support groups such as Kensington Women’s Group and AA, and we have continued to host with open arms the Church of Christ Scientists as their welcoming temporary home. None of this could transpire without the stewardship commitments of our members.
Stewardship is not simply a function of doing business in the local congregation, but it is an act of worship that flows from God’s Word. It is the joyous activity of managing life’s resources for His purposes. There is a joy associated with giving, but this joy can only be experienced by giving. We hope you have found inspiration in the church’s use of your contributions, and we hope that you continue your generosity as you have in the past so that Northbrook can endure as a place of joy and comfort for many within, and beyond, these walls.
With endless gratitude for the ways you show that Finance Matters, Amy Annett, Mark Best, Dan Gross and Rev. Anne Schaefer
Northbrook’s Mission Tithe Dollars at Work as We Share the Love of Jesus Christ
As part of Northbrook’s mission to Live the Love of Jesus Christ, a tithing of our offering and pledge collections is the basis of most of our financial support to our long list of mission partner organizations. This disbursement process is one of the functions of the Mission Connection Committee. In October, we made disbursements to the following: $650 to South Oakland Shelter, $250 to Ecumenical Theological Seminary and $1825 to Freedom House – Detroit. We also delivered over $1700 worth of new winter clothing to Open Door at Fort Street Presbyterian Church.

5K, 6 Churches, 7,000 Hours of Service With the overwhelming success of last year's service challenge, this year we have upped the ante! Join in the fun and plan to take part in service opportunities and tracking your hours throughout the month of November. Northbrook is again working with area
Presbyterian churches including First Pontiac, First Troy, Kirk in the Hills, Orchard Lake and University to collectively track 7,000 hours of service. We will kick off the month with a 5K walk/run around Kirk in the Hills on Saturday, November 2. We are still looking for walkers, runners and volunteers.
There also will be devotions included in our weekly e-mail update as well as challenge updates in worship and information about service opportunities among the churches all month. You're also welcome to count hours achieved on your own. Northbrook will be hosting clean up days with The Welcome Inn as well as an opportunity for the youth to cook for area homeless. Watch for details about these and other specific service opportunities.
Sunday, November 24 following Worship Join us on Sunday, Novembe4 24 following worship to help decorate for the holiday season.
There will be trees to trim, wreathes to hang and fun to be had.

Northbrook Book Club Meeting—Monday, November 4 We will meet on Monday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Library to discuss The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. Books are available and may be signed out in the office. Overview: At first glance Harold Fry is a sad, lonely English milquetoast, the human equivalent of a potted geranium. Rachel Joyce’s first novel contrives a way to shake him out of his monotonous life and send him on a voyage of self-discovery. Harold will learn that there is more to life than mowing one’s lawn. Readers will learn that one man’s quiet timidity should not be taken at face value. Potted geraniums have feelings too.
Upcoming dates and book selections include: December 16—The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (book provided) January 27, 2020 – Beloved by Toni Morrison (readers obtain their own copy)
Golf Outing Appreciation! Thank you so much on behalf of the Second Mile Center of Detroit. Because of your donations, golfing, dining and prayers, we once again had a very successful event! The weather was great. We had 20 more people than last year, fun was had by all and we made $21,800! Sadly, we lost the trophy for the most players from one church by just 1 golfer! So, let’s get it back next year! Next year’s date is Sunday, September 20, 2020. Put it on your calendar!
2019 Angel Tree Christmas Present Drive Sunday, November 24—Friday, December 13
Sharing the love of Jesus Christ this Christmas with the families, residents and clients of:
Oakland Family Services - a private human services agency, serving families who are facing financial difficulty. While most families in our community look forward to the holidays with joy and anticipation, there are some who are struggling to meet the financial demands of day-to-day life and do not have the means to provide gifts for their children on Christmas day. For them the holidays bring a sense of dread and disappointment. We can help make their holidays brighter by providing clothing, gifts, food and household items. Our Angel Tree will be decorated with angel tags that describe specific needs and gift wishes for the members of one of these families.
A Place of Refuge - a home providing safe transitional housing to homeless youth who have aged out or will soon age out of foster care. For youth who are transitioning out of foster care, the holidays can be a lonely and difficult time. Through our angel tree gifts, we can show our love and support to the young men who are currently living at A Place of Refuge. Our Angel Tree will include tags representing their personal needs and gift wishes as well as items that are needed for the house.
Open Door Ministry - a mission supplying meals and clothing to the homeless and those in great need. Our Angel Tree will include tags detailing general clothing donations that are needed to help keep the clients of Open Door warm this winter.
To adopt an angel, simply detach the bottom portion of the angel tag from the tree and record your name on the sign-out sheet.
Wrapped gifts and donations should be placed under the tree by Noon, Friday, December 13.

Northbrook Preschool We want to thank Michael Campion for attaching our new cubbies! We really appreciate all that he does for us. We are having a busy fall, and we are getting ready for Thanksgiving. We have been learning about the Native Americans and Pilgrims. We will be preparing and eating our very own Thanksgiving Brunch. We are in need of metal 3 pound coffee cans to make our Indian Drums. If you have a metal coffee can, we would greatly appreciate it if you would drop it off in Room #4 (the preschool office).
Thank you so much and we hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving with family and friends.
