MAY 2021 In a new documentary, discover the history of Rust Belt poverty, using the city of Newark, New Jersey as a microcosm. Rust chronicles the historic rise and fall of U.S. industrialization which, coupled with aftershocks of slavery and failed government policies, has crippled cities with abandoned factories and deep persistent poverty. It also touches on how the history of racism in America, beginning with slavery, morphed into Convict Leasing, Jim Crow Laws, and, ultimately, mass incarceration. T he original Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood may have stopped producing new episodes years ago, but the influence of the program and of Fred Rogers himself are still being felt across generations. The first spinoff from the beloved children’s program, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (weekdays at 10am), welcomed four-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original programs’ Daniel Striped Tiger, who invited young viewers to learn skills necessary for growing and learning, like emotional intelligence, kindness and respect. This month, we’re excited to debut the next spinoff series Donkey Hodie, a whimsical new puppet series that encourages preschoolers to aim high, embrace challenges and work hard to achieve their goals. In the land of Someplace Else, follow the adventures of the enthusiastic Donkey Hodie — a yellow donkey with a bright magenta mane, who happens to be the granddaughter of the original character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (now, “Grampy Hodie”). Joining Donkey is her loyal and empathetic best friend Purple Panda; practical and quick-witted young mallard Duck Duck; and empathetic and eager canine Bob Dog. Together, the four follow their big dreams and work together to form creative solutions to everyday problems. Not only will kids laugh and sing along to new music and catchy tunes, kids will learn about perseverance, resilience and teamwork, while enjoying plenty of silliness along the way. Donkey Hodie’s arrival is a great complement to NJ PBS’s children’s programming lineup. Beginning at 7am, travel back in time to meet historical figures with Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum; discover science with budding superheroes in Hero Elementary (7:30am); ask questions with Elinor Wonders Why (8am); explore the arts and creativity with Pinkalicious & Peterrific (8:30am); embrace the living sciences of paleontology and natural science with Dinosaur Train (9am); and so much more! In a new documentary, discover the history of Rust Belt poverty, using the city of Newark, New Jersey as a microcosm.

The original Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood may have stopped producing new episodes years ago, but the influence of the program and of Fred Rogers himself are still being felt across generations. The first spinoff from the beloved children’s program, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

(weekdays at 10am), welcomed four-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original programs’ Daniel Striped Tiger, who invited young viewers to learn skills necessary for growing and learning, like emotional intelligence, kindness and respect.

Inspired by the book of the same name by Marc Wort-man, the film tells the story of a privileged group of Yale college students who formed a private air militia. Known as the First Yale Unit, and dubbed ‘the mil-lionaires’ unit’ by the New York press, they became the founding squadron of the U.S. Naval Air Reserve and were the first to fly for the United States in World War I.
