Pastoral Reflections – “A Round of Applause”
It’s usually my favorite part of the play. When the final scene has concluded, when the lines have
been said and the drama is complete, the actors and actresses coming running back on state to take
a bow. The audience responds by applauding the efforts of their evening’s work. I love that. I love
to give the accolades. I love to see the actors and actresses receive the applause. Because I have
enjoyed their skill and craft, I then enjoy congratulating them on “a job well done.”
Oh how I wish we did this in all parts of our lives. I wish we could give an ovation to the neighbors
who make life a little safer, a little sweeter. I wish we could give a hand to the store clerks who go
out of their way and give special attention to our needs. I wish the waitresses who accommodate us
would run out of the kitchen after a well served repast and take a bow. I wish the moms and dads in
our church families could receive applause for “raising children in the way they should go.”
But not only them – I wish our policemen and fire-fighters could hear the thanks from grateful
neighbors and citizens. I wish the bus drivers and “cabbies” would be duly appreciated by their
patrons. I wish, I wish, I wish . . . I can’t help but think this would be a better world if we could give
applause to all those who help and serve us. I think our community would be more about civility and
courtesy instead of complaining and cranking. Our neighborhoods would represent our decency and
our kindness instead of our isolationism and self-indulgence. Could this be why St. Paul wrote the
words of Colossians 3:12-14? I think so. Listen: “Therefore as God’s chosen people holy and dearly
loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with
each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have for one another. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in unity.”

Pastoral Reflections cont’d…
Jesus was all about these virtues. He not only practiced them. He embodied them! And now He
has given us the power to do them too. In His forgiveness given from the cross on which He died,
He poured out His blood. His blood cleanses us from our old ways, but also fills us with ability to
live the new life in Him. At our Baptism this power was granted to us. Now everyday of our lives the
Holy Spirit grants us the will, strength and ability to live the new life Christ gives us. I believe giving
due thanks, praise, affirmation and affection is a way to be about these virtues. As we celebrate this
Pentecost season, pray that we may use what He has given to us. Pray that we can applaud one
another.
I am yours in Christ,
Pastor Yonker

The famed author Robert Louis Stevenson once entered in his diary what he considered to be an
extraordinary thing. He wrote, “I have been to church today and surprisingly I am not depressed.” Maybe you
know people like that who look worse walking out of church than they did walking into the Lord’s house.
Some claim that you have to give up everything to be a Christian and yet the Lord never requires of us to give
up anything except for that which is sinful in our lives. We don’t give up our joy in order to be a Christian.
The fullness of Christ’s love was never designed to make anyone sad. He only wishes to take from us those
things that would hinder our highest enjoyment here, and our eternal happiness beyond. Jesus didn’t come that
you might have sadness but He has come that you might have life and have it more abundantly.
The Jewish Encyclopedia states that no language has as many words for joy and rejoicing as Hebrew.
In the Old Testament there are twenty-seven different words used for some aspect of joy. Hebrew worship sees
God as the only source of joy and with the psalmist of old we confess, “you show me the path of life; in your
presence there is fullness of joy, in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
So where does this joy come from? Certainly not from earthly things. An observant author once wrote:
“The most miserable people I have known have not been those who suffered from catastrophes—which they
could blame on fate or accident—but those who had everything they wanted, except the power to enjoy it.”
Let me tell you where joy is not found—not in unbelief—Voltaire, the famed atheist, wrote, “I wish I had never
been born.” Joy is not found in pleasure—Lord Byron lives a life of sinful pleasure, yet he wrote, The worm,
the canker, and the grief are mine alone.” Joy is not found in money as an American millionaire said on his
deathbed, “I suppose I am the most miserable man on earth.”
And this joy can not be found in your family for someone inevitably will disappoint you and cause you
sadness, this joy can not be found in your friends for they too let us down and betray us, this joy can not be
found in your work for that too is shifting and temporary as life itself, and as the events of this past week testify
to so loudly, this joy can not be found in life which is so fragile and the joy of one moment can be shattered so
quickly and easily. This joy cannot be found in us for we are painfully aware of our natural inclination away
from joy toward envy, malice, hatred and anger.
Remember the words of Jesus as He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well as she was drawing
water. Jesus said to her and to us, “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water
I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4). Jesus who for the joy set
before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, did so for you, so that all your sins are washed away in the
blood He shed for you, so that your hearts are open to receive more and more of His joy, peace and life, so that
the joy of your salvation may be complete.
With that Samaritan woman we respond to Jesus and say, “give us some of that water so that we may
drink.” And Jesus does as He pours out His Holy Spirit into our lives as we rejoice in being His children
through Baptism and the gift of faith, as we rejoice in opportunities we have to dig deep into the wells of joy
that God gives to us in His love letter to us, His holy Word.
I am praying that this joy of Jesus fills your heart these summer months. I am praying that this joy of
Jesus compels you to come often here to the Lord’s holy house as we worship and praise and thank the God of
our salvation for all He has done in seeing us through this pandemic. I am praying that this joy of Jesus
overflows out of your heart into the hearts of others as you share Jesus with those around you.
Peace, love and much joy—Pastor Baerwolf 3
