THE CAPITOL THEATRE… CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS.A New Century. A New Clearwater. A New Capitol.

Historic Capitol Theatre Grand Re-Opening Festivities A Smash Hit

Grand Re-opening festivities were held at the nearly century old Capitol Theatre that included Cruisin’ at the Capitol (an antique car and motorcycle show to honor Jay Leno’s passion for antique vehicles), a Street Party that featured The Nighthawks, a VIP Reception at the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa and a sold-out Jay Leno performance. Best estimates are that 3,000 arts patrons, residents, supporters and members attended these events.

Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO shared, “This is a new beginning! The newly renovated Capitol Theatre will give Downtown Clearwater its own signature. Downtown Clearwater is filled with opportunities and breathing life back into it is part of the mission. I am thrilled that the Capitol Theatre can be the cornerstone that will spark reinvestment in the area.”

According to George Cretekos, Clearwater Mayor, “The Capitol Theatre holds a long history in the hearts of Pinellas County residents. Since 2009, the City has partnered with Ruth Eckerd Hall to provide performances bringing diverse offerings back downtown to Clearwater. With this partnership came a vision to enhance and restore the theater to a prominent position – and with this Grand Re-opening we have done just that – the Capitol Theatre is a star!”

• Broadway and television star Megan Hilty held an impromptu Q&A after her sound check for 40 theater students.

CAPITOL THEATRE TRIVIA

Alan Bomstein, Creative Contractors President and CEO presents a $55,000 check to Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO to support the Expanding the Experience Capital Campaign at the Capitol Theatre and Ruth Eckerd Hall’s 9th Annual Gala – What a Feeling. Alan shared, “The Capitol Theatre is a huge game changer for Downtown Clearwater. Not only is Creative Contractors proud to have constructed this beautiful building but we have always been avid supporters of the arts. The arts are an integral part of the fabric of the community and quality arts, especially performing arts, speak to the culture of a great town. We have a long track record of supporting Ruth Eckerd Hall and we are honored to continue that tradition with this gift.”

Creative Contractors Continue Their Generosity

Volunteers Honored

A Volunteer Appreciation Night was held to demonstrate how grateful we are to our 316 administrative and volunteer ushers who donated 38,537 hours last year saving us $305,598 in payroll. They gathered at the newly-renovated Capitol Theatre and were treated to food and drinks by Ruth Eckerd Hall staff members who portrayed “ushers” for the evening. The evening gave the volunteer ushers the chance to take tours and get familiar with the layout of the Capitol Theatre. According to Elizabeth McAndrew, administrative volunteer leader and usher, “I have volunteered at Ruth Eckerd Hall for 23 years along with other wonderful volunteers who have been there much longer. I have been exposed to shows I would never have seen and made lasting friends. I have seen the rapport between artist and audience that has been inspiring. It has broadened my horizons and given me a sense of community. Additionally, the Hall does so much for the children with their arts education programs. I am very proud to be a part of it.”

A Great Way to Show Your SupportBecome a member of our Legacy Society and make Ruth Eckerd Hall part of your estate plan! Once you make that decision, one of your best options is to leave an IRA or pension account to us. Then Uncle Sam can contribute as much as $40 (or more) for every $60 you leave to Ruth Eckerd Hall. This is what happens when someone who is subject to federal estate tax leaves all or part of an IRA or pension account to Ruth Eckerd Hall. Also, besides estate tax, beneficiaries will normally pay income tax on monies inherited from an IRA or pension account. The income tax bracket is now 39.6%. If IRA or pension account monies are left directly to an IRS registered public charity like Ruth Eckerd Hall there is no tax, so Uncle Sam is in essence donating well over half of the amount in many situations. Please consider this great opportunity to allow Uncle Sam to help you enhance your support for Ruth Eckerd Hall. You can change many lives for children, music and performing arts lovers, artists and our community through support of our organization.

Thank you to Alan Gassman for writing this article.

Friends of Music Hits $ 1 Million MilestoneFriends of Music members have generously donated $1 million since the inception of the program in 2009, to bring performing arts into the lives of children who would not otherwise experience it. We extend a BIG thank you to each one of you for helping us meet this fantastic goal!

Earlier this year, Friends of Music members had a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience at Ruth Eckerd Hall at an exhilarating Olympics-themed bash with Daughtry (fifth from left). Prior to the performance, the talents of our Rhythm and Sole Tap Ensemble were featured. As students of the Marcia P. Hoffman School of Arts, they got to experience what it’s like to perform as an opening act for an internationally renowned artist. The tap dancers also had the opportunity to meet the star that night.

Stay tuned for information about the next thrilling Friends of Music event.

Members Supporting Our MissionOlivia and Robin Selby meet Rick Springfield at his Ruth Eckerd Hall appearance along with Cole and Gail Selby. Robin (second from left) and Gail (far right) are Founding Friends of Music members supporting arts education opportunities for students in the Tampa Bay area. They have been members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall family since 2007 helping to sustain our mission of engaging the community to master, experience, discover and explore quality performing arts.

Season Exceeds Member’s ExpectationsRuth Eckerd Hall family members since 2007, Vicki and Steven DeGeorge, shared with us that, “Each season is beyond our expectations! Great seats, a great venue, exceptional staff, amazing friendships, evolving improvements and the talented performances are just a few of the many things that continue to bring us to Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre.

“I have been a member of the Board since the inception of Ruth Eckerd Hall. I was our first Treasurer and subsequently served as Chair. It is exciting to see the ‘roots’ that Ruth Eckerd Hall has in the Tampa Bay performing arts community. We have ignited the creative spark in many of our children and complemented the foundation of many in our cultural arts community. After a mandatory rotation off the Board, it is exciting to be back.”

“I feel that it is important to serve as a volunteer at Ruth Eckerd Hall because it is one of the world-class performing arts venues in our community. Ruth Eckerd Hall provides a diverse range of concert artists, cultural, educational and artistic experiences like Project: Shattered Silence.”

“The performing arts helps each of us be better-rounded and when individuals are better- rounded the businesses where they work and the community where they live are better-rounded. I have supported the performing arts for years because I believe they are critical to the quality of life. I am thrilled to be back on the Board of such a great institution.”

“When Michael and I moved here 42 years ago from San Francisco, we realized what a cultural oasis Clearwater was and were thrilled when the opportunity presented itself to become a part of the building and fundraising for the Performing Arts Center and Theater, better known as Ruth Eckerd Hall. This commitment has never wavered and we still feel strongly about the significant contribution the advancement of the performing arts and arts education has in our community. We take great joy and pleasure in this commitment along with the rest of the Ruth Eckerd Hall family. Thank you for the distinction of inviting me to once again serve on the Ruth Eckerd Hall Board of Directors.”

“I’m excited to be part of an organization that is making a difference in exposing the youth of our community to the arts. Every survey out there shows that children who participate in the arts have less problems in school, have higher acceptance to advanced education, and generally, lead more successful lives. The arts seem to be the first programs to be cut in education budgets, so we need to reach to the private sector and organizations like Ruth Eckerd Hall to make sure we don’t fail in this important mission.”

“The performing arts have been proven to enhance students’ confidence, self-esteem and academic abilities, which, in itself, can provide unlimited possibilities. I am proud to serve on Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Board of Directors to help reinforce their mission and provide students in the Tampa Bay area with enhanced skills that they can use as they launch their careers and throughout their lives.”

“I still remember seeing my first play when I was 10 or 11-years-old – I was mesmerized! As I got older, I was involved in student plays and the glee club even though it wasn’t cool for a jock to be “artsy.” I had a ball! My thirst for the arts will never be quenched. The arts give man his humanity. My quality of life has constantly been enhanced by the arts. Having just become a new Board member, it is important to me that I help continue the success of Ruth Eckerd Hall as well as build on its success. I’m proud to be a part of helping to expand the breadth and depth so that other 10 or 11-year-olds are given a chance to experience the wonder of the performing arts!”

“Ruth Eckerd Hall is a major economic force in the Tampa Bay area with projected impact for 2014 to be over $31 million. As a new Board member, I look forward to helping Ruth Eckerd Hall and my fellow arts patrons expand our economic value and bring top quality performing arts and arts education to our community. I believe arts education in music, dance, theater and the visual arts for the benefit of our next generations is the responsibility of the private sector and will create confident young men and women who will perpetuate a legacy of cultural fulfillment. As an ardent supporter for the revitalization of Downtown Clearwater, I am excited for the Capitol Theatre to breathe new life into an area of our community with amazing potential.”

The Nuevo Arts Group (formerly known as the Stradivarius Society) is comprised of arts patrons dedicated to supporting the classics including ballet, opera, classical music and jazz. This newly formed group

gathered for an appreciation dinner prior to the Lang Lang performance. The evening was hosted by Zev Buffman, President and CEO of Ruth Eckerd Hall and Vilma Buffman, Event Chair. The major sponsors were Betty Jo Andrews (far right) and J. Harrison and Elisabeth Smith (first and second from left) pictured with Lang Lang. Betty Jo shared, “The classics are an important part of the performing arts. I realize that the audiences for the classics are getting smaller and smaller but that doesn’t mean that audience is not important. Anyone that was at the Lang Lang performance would have been happy to join the Nuevo Arts Group… it was that outstanding.” The Smiths commented, “The arts are important… they are the mark of a civilization. We need to provide an awareness of the classics and we need to make it accessible. We think that everyone that can should support Ruth Eckerd Hall.”

For the second year, Ruth Eckerd Hall has been selected to receive a

$5,000 award from the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation. We were

selected as a recipient by Community Hero of the Year, Glen Schubert (left) of Instruments of Change, which gives away musical instruments

for free to children who can’t afford them. Glen has been involved

with Ruth Eckerd Hall for years and may expand his involvement in

the future. The funds will go toward general operations and tuition assistance at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts.

In 2013, the Lightning Community Hero of the Year went to another

longtime supporter of Ruth Eckerd Hall, Dwayne Scheuneman (right). After an accident 10 years ago, which paralyzed him, he started a

nonprofit organization that teaches disabled children how to dance.

The $5,000 from that year’s grant supported the costs to bring

live performances to 3,500 at-risk students at local Title One

elementary schools.

Thank you Glen, Dwayne and the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation for helping us change lives through the performing arts!

PREFERRED CORPORATE PARTNERS AND GRANTORS… CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS.

Preferred Corporate Partners Share Why They Support the Performing Arts

William “Bill” Dean Brown, (right) Chief Chocolate Officer of William Dean Chocolates, has been one of our preferred corporate partners since 2013. He was at a performance with Scott Kistler, (left) Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Suncoast Hospice and shared, At William Dean Chocolates, we feel it is important to support Ruth Eckerd Hall as they provide a tremendous value to the community. They not only provide artists for our enjoyment but also work to teach and develop the artists in our young people. Supporting the arts is really just giving a gift to ourselves. I love the quote: ‘Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.’ Ruth Eckerd provides us that opportunity when we need it most.”

Mike Bollenback, (left) Shareholder at Bollenback & Forret, PA, has been a preferred corporate partner since 2013 and a member of the Hall since 2006. He shared, “Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre are the best venues with the best music, shows, educational programs and people. What more could you ask for?”

Daniel Ruiz, (right) Financial Services Professional Agent with New York Life, and a preferred corporate partner since 2010 told us that supporting the performing arts is important to him and his company for the following reasons, “For me, it’s a combination of having an opportunity to see the best concerts in the area and also having an opportunity to rub elbows with the ‘movers and shakers’ of Tampa Bay. It also brings me much pride when I bring a possible partner to the table!”

THE MARCIA P. HOFFMAN SCHOOL OF THE ARTS… CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS.

GRAMMY® Museum’s Music Revolution Project Returns for Second YearThe GRAMMY® Museum’s acclaimed Music Revolution Project offers select talented students the chance to engage in musical workshops, songwriting courses, mentoring sessions, record the material they’ve written and perform their new work live. This free four week program will provide participants with an intensive curriculum including instruction, rehearsals and mentoring with GRAMMY® Award-winning artists, directors and composers. The workshops will conclude with a live performance at the Capitol Theatre on Friday, August 15 at 7:30 pm. Festivities from 6:00 to 7:30 pm will include performances on Cleveland Street in front of the Capitol Theatre with talented young artists from last year’s GRAMMY® Music Revolution Project including the Ries Brothers, Denim Blue and Miclain Keith, Gulf Boulevard featuring Kayla Engberg and Nat Drum – her. Call the Ticket Office at 727.791.7400 for your FREE tickets. VIP tickets are also available for $30.

Two of the students from last year’s program, Charlie and Kevin Ries, performed at the 2nd Annual Dare to Dream Awards held at the Capitol Theatre and shared their thoughts about being a part of the program, “It was an amazing experience. We got to play and write with many musicians from different musical backgrounds such as jazz, classical and reggae. It really opened our minds to other styles of playing. It was incredible to get to meet so many talented players and also people in the industry. We are so thankful for what the program gave us – a once in a lifetime experience that gave us relationships and knowledge that will last a lifetime.”

This year’s program includes:

• 34 talented students, aged 14-19 years old

• From all around the Tampa Bay area (as far south as Bradenton and as far east as Plant City)

• Program housed entirely on the campus of the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall from July 21-August 14

Technical Theater Career Training Enters Third YearThe Technical Theater Career Training program completed its second year with 70 students participating from seven partner schools. This program provides free hands-on workshops that focus on what it takes to make shows happen from behind-the-scenes. The program will be expanded to include job awareness in all areas of Ruth Eckerd Hall such as marketing and promotion, production, programming, development, education, operations and ticketing/information services. Currently, the new working title is Careers in Theater. To increase the reach of this program, invitations to master classes/ workshops will open up to all students at partner schools including those in non-theater programs. The program will continue to offer the ability for students to ”shadow” Ruth Eckerd Hall touring shows and work in or observe the total process of loading-in shows, sound checks, lighting and all elements leading up to the performance. The program partners will include Clear Track Recording Studios in Clearwater. A new element called Teaching Our Teachers will also be introduced in the coming year.

According to Jerry L. Shaver, Retired Theater Educator and Director with Pinellas County Schools, “I recommend that you take advantage of the fantastic opportunities that Ruth Eckerd Hall is offering for free to the school system. The chance to meet and network with professionals in various fields, to learn about technical theater and how that knowledge could be applied to other areas and the various jobs to which theater training could lead are just some of the excellent worthwhile outcomes.”

Thank you to our partner schools:

• Berkeley Preparatory School• Calvary Christian High School• Clearwater High School • Countryside High School • East Lake High School • St. Petersburg College • University of Tampa

Project: Shattered Silence ShinesBy age 15, Ana had suffered unbelievable abuse at the hands of her stepfather. After three years and many beatings, Ana and her family bravely fled. After battling homelessness and tremendous anger, Ana has become an honor student, received prestigious leadership awards and has a very promising future. Thanks to Project: Shattered Silence, Ana was given an outlet to share her experiences and a way to work toward forgiveness and healing.

Since being formed six years ago, Project: Shattered Silence, featuring the real-life experiences of young people in our community, told in their voices, has given nearly 120 teenagers a way to share their personal struggles. Project: Shattered Silence has been the topic of a documentary created in partnership with WEDU, won a regional Emmy Award®, has been accepted for national distribution by American Public Television, was the recipient of the Images and Voices of Hope National Award of Excellence and was the topic of an article in the Playbill® VIP Spotlight series.

This year’s sixth original production, Compositions, touched on topics that all ages could relate to such as personal identity and family while delving into the minds and lives of those we pass every day on the street to learn about everyone’s truly unique “composition.” Over the course of 10 months, a theatrical work was put together, based entirely on truth. As in past years, students performed to sold out crowds.

According to Jared O’Roark, Artistic Director, Project: Shattered Silence captures “the catharsis of a group of courageous teenagers who are willing to bare their souls, share their intriguing, heart-wrenching stories of struggle and survival, rejection and acceptance and ultimately unwavering hope.”

THE MARCIA P. HOFFMAN SCHOOL OF THE ARTS… CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS.

Jazz Students Attend Prestigious Competition Members of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Jazz Band were selected as one of the 12 finest jazz bands in the country and the only one representing the entire U.S. East Coast to participate in the Savannah Musical Festival’s 9th Annual High School Jazz Band competition, where 25 students worked with jazz masters for three days, performed in showcases, played in competition rounds and attended a variety of performances. Jason, one of the talented jazz students who went on this trip shared, “I want to express my appreciation for the tremendous opportunity of participating in the Savannah Music Festival. My experience there was nothing short of life changing! Meeting musicians like Christian McBride (jazz bassist) and Terell Stafford (jazz trumpeter) and seeing them play was positively inspiring. I feel that my playing has consistently improved since my experience in Savannah.” Thank you to the members of the Volunteer Usher Fund, Terrell and Joe Clark, Fred and Aleta Fisher, Clearwater Jazz Holiday and all the donors who demonstrated their generosity through the Power2Give campaign to make this trip possible. Your support helped us change more lives through the performing arts!

Fred Travalena Memorial Scholarship AwardedLois Travalena (right) presented the Fred Travalena Memorial Scholarship to Kylie Couture at the 2nd Annual Dare to Dream Awards held at the Capitol Theatre. In keeping with Fred’s special relationship with and commitment to our military, the Fred Travalena Memorial Scholarship provides opportunities for members of military families to study music, drama and/or dance at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Kylie is a 16-year-old junior who has been a student at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts since 2010 participating in camps, classes and private lessons. She also placed third in the vocal category in this year’s Dare to Dream Awards. Kylie shared, “I know that this scholarship will be invaluable in helping me get to college and in letting me study what I love on my own terms.”

Landon Korabek Memorial Scholarship Winner NamedSusan and Greg Korabek established the Landon Korabek Foundation to remember their son Landon who died unexpectedly at the age of 17. Part of the foundation’s mission focuses on fostering musical education in the community. In order to honor Landon’s love of music and ensure that his song will live on to be sung by others, Susan and Greg hold the OneLove Memorial JamFest each spring. Susan and Greg Korabek (second and third from left) along with event committee member Kendra Pilson (fourth from left) presented $6,500 raised from this year’s event to Sharon Reid-Kane, Senior Director of Education (far left), Suzanne Ruley, Interim Chief Development Officer (second from right) and Melissa Nolan, Registrar (far right) to fund a scholarship in

Landon’s name that provides one year of private music lessons for a deserving student at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The recipient of this year’s scholarship is fourteen-year-old student, Daniel Boelke (in hat) who shared, “I was elated and honored to receive the Landon Korabek Memorial Scholarship. If I had not received this scholarship, my family would not have been able to pay for me to ontinue private lessons. Private lessons are helping me to improve vocally and theatrically. I am very lucky and thankful.”
