Vol. 05 No. 08 August 2012 Circulation: 2100 A Great 4th of July! The Mission Viejo community had a great 4th of July celebration this year. Like in years past, children and families participated in a bike, wagon and pet parade. The HOA would especially like to thank Amador’s Air Jumpers whose owner lives in Mission Viejo for provid- ing the HOA with three bouncy castles free of charge! The day was also enhanced by the music from the classic rock n’ roll band Ugly Rumor. We also had many politicians, a dunk tank, and the Aurora firefighters. Thank you also to several of our Smoky Hill High School students and residents that volunteered for the event. It was an excel- lent community happening sponsored by your HOA and made possible by our Trash and Recycling program. Our Senior Vice-president Troy Haller did an excellent job this year and his company generously donated all the hot dogs. Thanks for making the 4th of July in 2012 a special neighborhood event! National Night Out in Mission Viejo Park – August 7th! Bring your own food and join us for an informal gathering on the evening of August 7th in Mission Viejo Park. As the Aurora Fire and Police Departments make their way through the City they will be stop- ping in our neighborhood to greet each of you. This is a great opportunity to meet and thank each of our brave firefighters and police officers who work so hard for us. National Night Out is an annual event designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and with their local law enforce- ment partners. The goal is to heighten crime-prevention awareness, build support and participation in local anti-crime programs, and most impor- tantly, send a message that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. It’s also the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors even better. See you there. Music in the Park Concert With Free Floats – August 18th! Our annual Music in the Park concert will be Saturday August 18th in Mission Viejo Park. Please bring your family and a picnic for a musical evening featuring the brass quartet of the Aurora Symphony Orchestra. New this year – free ice cream floats to the first 100 concert listeners. Be sure not to miss it! The music will begin at 5:30 p.m. Mission Viejo Library Happenings Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m.: Preschool Storytime Saturday, August 25: Movie Matinee: Hachi: a Dogs Tale New Literacy Center opening the first few weeks of August! Volunteer Newsletter Carriers Needed Many of the volunteers who deliver the newsletter report that they enjoy the walk and look forward to delivering the newsletter each month. The newsletter does an excellent job of unifying the neighborhood and most routes can be done within one hour. We are presently looking for more volunteers. Please call us on our Mission Viejo Hot Line at 720- 443-0HOA (720-443- 0462) if you are able to help us out. Thank you for this great neighbor- hood service! New Asphalt Paving in Mission Viejo The Mission Viejo HOA has learned that the City will be repaving many of the streets in our community. Some areas have already seen new slurry poured on top of existing pavement. Soon Mission Parkway and Marguerite Parkways will be completely re-asphalted starting on September 4th to 18th. Please be aware of temporary closures and detours in the community during this time. We thank the City’s for addressing our roadway needs.

The budget includes $16 million in General Fund Reserves, which were necessary to prevent additional budget cuts and maintain current class sizes and quality educational programs. The district has cut more than $40 million from its budget over the last four years because of dramatic decreases in state funding for education. “It is about funding the mission of our school district,” said Superintendent Mary Chesley. “Those things don’t happen if we don’t properly fund our schools. We are at a place where we are stretched. This is the best thinking we can bring forward in less than the best of times.” The 2012-2013 budget provides per pupil funding of $6,398, slightly less than last year’s figure of $6,403. On April 16, the Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution calling for a bond and budget election on November. 6, as recommended by the district’s Long Range Facility Planning Committee. The budget election would provide $25 million to maintain class sizes and provide curriculum and instruction neces-sary for student success in college and the workplace. The bond election would provide $125 million for long-term costs including Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focused class-rooms, renovations to buildings across the district, and expansions at Grandview and Cherokee Trail high schools, which are over capac-ity and using mobile classrooms to accommodate student growth.REGISTER NOW FOR THE FIRST AMERICAN STATE BANK FITNESS FESTIVAL! Watch Carrie tell her story by visiting parkerhospital.org/spine

It’s hard to keep Carrie down; she proved that 15 years ago, recovering from a serious car accident. But over time, she began to experience extreme pain and numbness throughout her body. Soon, the bubbly, energetic Carrie was nowhere to be found. So she met with Dr. Scott Stanley, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Parker Adventist Hospital. He quickly discovered profound damage to her spine, and performed a highly specialized surgical procedure using stem cell technology. Today, Carrie is back in the saddle enjoying life, pain-free. That’s why Parker Adventist Hospital is here.

It is a point of pride that schools are community buildings. History shows that homes in the Cherry Creek School District have held higher property values than most other areas in the Metro Area due the reputation of the schools. “So much of the value of the homes in our district is dependent on the outstanding reputation of the Cherry Creek School District,” said Edie Marks, one of the top Realtors in the Denver Metro area. “It is the magnet that draws people to our area. You can expect the reputation of the Cherry Creek School District to increase the value of the home and increase the number of buyers.”

The district’s Long Range Facility Planning Committee, a group of citizens and district employees, recommended the bond election after it completed a Five-Year Needs Assessment, cover-ing 2012 to 2017. The budget election would provide $25 million in operating funds to:• Maintain class size• Provide curriculum and instruction necessary for success in college and the workplace• Continue the district’s commitment to academic excellence• Utilize technology to ensure student success in the 21st century The goal is to ensure that every student and teacher has a classroom in which high quality curriculum and instruction are enhanced by class sizes that provide support to all students and the technological tools and programming that are required for success. The bond election would provide $125 million for long-term costs, including:• Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) focused facilities• Renovations and building additions across the district• New technology• Upgraded safety and security systems Instead of spending $125 million (the entire bond amount) on a new high school, new wings of classrooms will be added to Cherokee Trail High School and Grandview High School. All of the high schools will receive complete science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classrooms, material, and programmatic renovation. (The Overland High School STEM facility was part of the 2008 bond and was completed on time and on budget.)

Passage of both issues would raise the property taxes on an average priced home about $8 a month. The district will face a budget shortfall of more than $16.4 million for the 2012-2013 school year. Current funding for the district is about the same funding levels as for the 2006-2007 school year, despite adding 2700 students, along with other increasing costs. For more information about how the bond money will be spent, please visit www.cherrycreekschools.org/Planning/Pages/2012Recommendation.aspx Please visit www.citizensforcherrycreekschools.com for more information about 3A and 3B and where to vote.

Covenants and City Code Corner My neighbor in Mission Viejo seems to get away with storing his boat and trailer in their driveway – why can’t I? Don’t fool yourself or get fooled by your neighbor. Mission Viejo covenants are very clear, all boats, trailers and RV’s must be kept in a semi-enclosed area and concealed from the surrounding street and neighborhood. The Mission Viejo HOA facilitates covenant issues and just because your neighbor seemingly “is getting away with it” usually only means that their issue hasn’t yet been brought to the attention of the HOA. Don’t gamble with thinking you can get away with it too. You may be asked to comply and pay for all the HOA legal fees as well. So please comply with our covenants and don’t gamble on it. To find out more about the HOA’s covenant enforcement policy see our web site under cov-enants or go to: http://missionviejohoa.org/files/52291695.pdf
