YEAR 12 RETREAT - My lor and LongwoodFrom Monday 23 February until Wednesday 25 February the Year 12 cohort travelled to two Retreat sites to take a break and reflect on the future. These three days were a memorable way to mark the half way point of the first term of school for the 2015 Year 12s. The students’ enthusiasm and willingness to participate was encouraging. Their positivity was contagious and everyone fully embraced the experiences on offer. The Retreat exceeded our expectations and we returned with a refreshed outlook. We now look forward to embracing the remainder of the year, having been energised by this experience.

Students’ Reflections

In the midst of school work, assignments and other formal assessments, the Year 12 Retreat provided an exciting ‘vacation’ for the senior students. The short period of three days and two nights was a time for the Year 12s to leave behind their work and outside stresses and take a well-deserved break. The Retreat provided an opportunity for relaxation and reflection and also building and strengthening the friendships between fellow students. We were all encouraged to step outside our comfort zones and share our personal thoughts and experiences with each other. Three bus loads of eager and enthusiastic girls were off to Mylor Baptist Retreat Centre or Longwood Camp for fun filled days. On Mylor Camp, we participated in memorable sessions which focused on our loved ones, coping with Year 12 work and other important aspects in our lives. After reflection we had an opportunity to strengthen bonds between our friends and have some fun participating in raft-making, canoeing, swinging from a 12m giant swing or crawling through mud on a military inspired challenge course. Each activity not only tested and strengthened our team building skills, but also our muscles which were aching by the end of each day. At the Longwood Camp, students were separated into groups to reflect and share thoughts before coming together again to discuss as a whole group. Interspersed between these spiritual gatherings were small yet lively games and many well-prepared meals. Longwood students also participated in a blindfold trust activity and a fun, yet extremely competitive, Mini Olympics competition. Each night we all spent time preparing for the SAC Low Talent Night. Acts ranged from magic tricks, dancing, singing, poetry and unforgettable skits made by staff and students. After returning from the Retreat it was clear that the Year 12 cohort had united as one large Class of 2015, even though we were not all together at the same site. The Year 12 Retreat was filled with challenges, laughter, happiness, memories as well as many mixed emotions. It was one to remember and will surely resonate with us for the rest of our lives.Karen Short & Theresa Chav 12MN

YEAR 8 CAMP - Glenhaven Park Camps i teDuring Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 1, the Year 8s set off for the Glenhaven Park campsite. The camps were split into two groups. Students in 8KF, 8SB and 8SG attended camp from Wednesday 11 February to Friday 13 February and students in 8KM and 8LC attended from Wednesday 18 February to Friday 20 February. The camps were designed to allow students to attempt new things and explore new experiences, learn how to not give up and to accept people for who they are. The program started with team building challenges through initiatives and the ‘Tower Challenge’ which puts groups of ten to twelve students into scenarios that can only be completed as a group. This then set the theme for the next couple of days, where challenge and tests were placed on individuals and on teams to achieve to the best of their abilities. The three days gave the opportunity for students to get to know one another, break the ice, build trust and reliance and develop new skills. Activities included raft building, bush skills, archery, 10m high ropes course, giant swing and a river hike. It was fantastic to see so many students overcome their fears as well as the encouragement that the girls gave to each other as their peers attempted the different activities. Night time activities included ‘Hide and Seek’ in the dark and the ‘SAC’s Got Talent’, a talent show which revealed the girls’ excellent skills and abilities. On the last night, a disco was held in the hall at the campsite which gave everyone on the camp a chance to let their hair down on the dance floor - even the teachers showed off some of their funky dance moves!

2015 International Student Chinese New Year DinnerOn Thursday 26 February international students from SAC gathered at the T Chow Restaurant in Market Street to celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Goat with a delicious Chinese banquet. The girls enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time together and get to know each other better. As they represent many different year levels, from Years 9 to 12, their paths do not necessarily cross during the busyness of their school week. Also invited were some students who will join the international student cohort during the year and who are presently developing their English language skills at the South Australian College of English in Waymouth Street. There was much laughter which reflected the good mood of those present and many photographs taken to help remember an enjoyable evening.

Getting Involved In A Better Future!

On Wednesday 11 March 2015 the Year 11 Society and Culture students visited Oxfam International. They were informed about Oxfam’s aims to reduce poverty and injustice. There are many campaigns such as ‘Close the Gap’, ‘Fair Trade’ and ‘Behind the Brands’ which assist other countries to sustain a better lifestyle for their citizens. Oxfam is run by over 40 volunteers who have set up an amazing bookshop. We were warmly welcomed by Mr Chris Leaver who taught us about the history and work of Oxfam and opened an invitation for us to let others know of this work. YEAR 6 EXCURSION - Par l iament HouseThis term Year 6 students have been learning about the Australian government and parliament in Humanities and Social Sciences. As part of this unit, the Year 6 classes attended a tour of Parliament House, led by Member of Parliament for Adelaide, Ms Rachel Sanderson on Tuesday 10 March 2015. The girls were guided through the Upper and Lower Houses as well as the State Parliament Library. They were taught about parliamentary processes, the history of the buildings and the significance of the different spaces within Parliament House. The girls enjoyed being immersed in hands-on learning and experiencing what a day at work feels like for State Parliamentary Members.

Ms Lisa McLaughlin, Ms Nicole Priest, Ms Renee Lambi& Ms Sharon HillYEAR 6 HOME CLASS TEACHERS

Students’ Reflections

At Parliament House we found out that the Lower House is more decorated and older than the Upper House. Parliament House was built at two separate times because of the Depression when money was scarce. I enjoyed the interesting facts that the members of Parliament shared with us. Camryn Brown 6RLThe most enjoyable thing about Parliament House was having the privilege to sit in the Lower and Upper Houses. I enjoyed looking at the library and all the rare books that looked so old. Grace Zada-Boatwright 6LM Some of my favourite experiences about visiting Parliament House were learning about its history, exploring the rooms, meeting our local Liberal Member of Parliament, Ms Rachel Sanderson who spoke to us about drafting a legislation about magazine rating for children and teenagers. I thought having the rating was a good idea because sometimes the content of the magazine may be inappropriate for young children. Casey Waterhouse 6SH

SECONDARY SPORTYEAR 5 EXCURSION - Ho ldfast Bay in G lene lg On Wednesday 25 February all Year 5 students went to Holdfast Bay in Glenelg to discover how the first settlers arrived to Australia in 1836.When we arrived, we had a few photos taken in front of a monument of the HMS Buffalo in Moseley Square on Jetty Road. There was an anchor which we believe belonged to the HMS Buffalo or the Africaine. We had our recess there and enjoyed our time while playing on the grass. We then followed the Proclamation trail. We were able to see a replica of the HMS Buffalo, which is now a family restaurant and it is one foot taller than the original ship. The HMS Buffalo was one of the first ships to arrive in Australia. The ship looked really big and unfortunately it was closed during our excursion as it is being renovated, so we couldn’t enter. The original HMS Buffalo sadly sunk around the coast of New Zealand. We did a lot of walking on the Proclamation trail but it was totally worth it!We also had the opportunity to see the Bay Discovery Centre. Here all of the students looked at and learnt about artefacts from South Australia’s history. Some of the artefacts were in a little room from the Africaine. Some of the students were able to watch a short clip of how the ships arrived and how much trouble the free settlers had when they came to Australia. We saw some old shells, how people used to dress and what life was like when the first settlers arrived. We certainly learnt a lot about South Australia’s history. We then went for a walk on the beach and everyone enjoyed playing on the sand and digging deep holes to find water. Some had competitions to see who could dig the deepest hole, others were writing their names and drawing shapes in the sand and some were doing handstand competitions. Everyone enjoyed being on the beach and having fun!Lastly, we walked along the Glenelg jetty. From the end of the jetty we were able to look at the ocean and the buildings at Glenelg. We finished our jetty walk by having our photo taken. At the end of the day we walked to the tram and got on board. The tram driver joked that there was no room for us on the tram. For a second we thought he was serious, but then we realised that he was only joking. In summary, we believe that this excursion to Glenelg was worthwhile. Everyone agreed that we learnt a lot. We would like to thank all the teachers and parents who helped to make this Glenelg experience possible. We hope the next Year 5s enjoy it as much as we did. We had an amazing time at Holdfast Bay!

Olivia Bolton 5JA & Amelia Milburn 5JA

On Wednesday 25 February we caught the tram to Holdfast Bay in Glenelg. The purpose of this excursion was to help us with our History project on the colony of South Australia. When we arrived we looked at a statue of where the first settlers arrived in Glenelg. Then we sat down on the beautiful green grass, had our recess and did lots of cartwheels. Then we went to the Bay Discovery Centre where a man talked to us about the history of South Australia. After this we took out our books and wrote our questions down and explored this wonderful place of history. It is a great place to learn and all of our questions were answered. After that we went around looking for more information on where people settled. Then we took off our shoes and walked along the beautiful Glenelg beach. We walked in puddles of water and had lunch at a playground. It was so much fun! Sadly, we then had to go back to school. The Bay Discovery Centre and Glenelg is a great place to learn new things about the history of South Australia.

The last round for Secondary Term 1 sport will take place next week (Week 9)with beach volleyball teams concluding their season on Tuesday 24 March, water polo on Thursday 26 March, lacrosse on Friday 27 March and Saturday sport teams on Saturday 28 March.

A reminder that due to the cancellation of rounds 1 and 2 for Saturday sport, the results for these competitions will not be recorded and there will be no points displayed on the premiership table. As a result these teams will not play the allocated play-offs round but instead they will play the round 1 games. Approximately 170 Years 7-12 students have nominated to play Term 2/3 sport for the winter season. We have ten netball teams, seven badminton teams, two soccer teams and one lacrosse team next term. This Friday 20 March is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

The National Day of Action provides a focus for schools and the wider school community to strengthen their everyday messages against bullying and violence.

There is a very informative website for parents and carers which provides information about bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence in schools. This can be found at: http://www.bullyingnoway.gov.au/parents/index.html

It’s well worth the look – let’s take a stand together!
