NEWSLETTER MAY 2016 Sheep at Baradine to be fed with ease Allan and Jennifer Hotchkiss had been looking for an easier and more efficient way to feed round bales out to their sheep, as often the sheep did not need a full bale. The Hustler SL-350 with its own inbuilt loading system means that the sheep can be fed using one tractor and operator, the bale can be loaded, transported to paddock and then fed out in as small or large a quantity as required. The Hustler SL-350 is a 3 point linkage, hydraulic drive, chain feeder. It can safely and efficiently tease apart and feed almost any shaped round bale into a windrow that stock will clean up very effectively. Allan and Jennifer are pictured with Tony Housden. New John Shearer Direct Drill waiting for rain at Gunnedah Chris Burgess of Gunnedah recently took delivery of a John Shearer 21 Run Direct Drill Combine. The 6 Row Combine was fitted with heavy duty 350lb tynes with direct drill points. Rear mounted finger harrows and a small seeds box for pasture sowing were also added. Chris opted for the John Shearer machine for its reliability and ease of operation. Due to the ongoing dry spell the Combine will have to be in the shed until there is sufficient moisture to sow on. Pictures shows Peter Kenny, Max Lees and Chris Burgess on delivery. Upgrade from Comfort King Cliff Wallace was recently looking to upgrade his old Case Comfort King tractor for his Hay making operations at Maules Creek. While on a visit to Gunnedah he was able to get pricing on a New Holland TT4.75 Tractor with a Challenge Loader . This was the perfect fit for him and his farm. The Loader was also fitted with a 4 in 1 Bucket and Pallet Forks to make the loading operations easier. Picture shows Cliff Wallace with his new rig at delivery. Another New Holland T7.185 for Inglewood Wallabadah With a good track record of success with their first T7.185 Inglewood Manager, David Caslick, has decided that another New Holland T7.185 would make operations more efficient. This new T7.185 has the same 140hp but has been supplied with the Auto Command CVT transmission, Terraglide front axle suspension and fully integrated Navigation and Auto Steer. The Challenge L4200 Front End Loader also has a couple of upgrades to the norm with the fitment of a Hydraulic Quick Coupler for bucket and forks, Hydro Ride Loader Suspension and Single Lever Multi-coupler to remove hydraulic hoses easily. Pictured at the delivery and start-up are Goodwin Kenny Service Technician Levi Alley and David Caslick. Upgrading the New Holland TM150 with a new Challenge With an additional property some distance away Jonathan St Clair saw the need for a second loader tractor to eliminate the need to move tractors between farms. After consideration of a new tractor and loader package Jonathan concluded that the best option would be to utilise his New Holland TM150 fully by fitting a loader to it. A Challenge L4500 Front end loader with 4.5m lift height to bottom pins was chosen along with various implements including a 4in1 Bucket, Dual Round Bale Spike, Pallet Forks and a Big Bag lifter. This combination will mean that Jonathan can carry out all the tasks needed in a timely and efficient manner. The Loader has also been fitted with Hydro Ride – this is effectively a loader suspension system that takes all the bang out of the loader frame in travel. Josh Peake Gunnedah

New to the Service Team at Gunnedah, Josh is keen to get to know more about the New Holland product and meet our customers.

At the Premer Field Day by Peter Kenny The annual Premer Field Day was held recently starting at the Premer Oval. The convoy headed to “Bungaree” to look at the Sorghum crop entered in the competition by Romani Pastoral Co. From there we went to “Marylands” for morning tea hosted by Phil and Jacki Whillock. Michael Casey from NFS Ag gave a demonstration on Drones and their capabilities. Rob Eveleigh from Cotton Seed Distributors spoke about the new Bollgard III Cotton Seed coming onto the market which be able to reduce the cultivation needed after the crop is picked and also reduce the residual buffer zone needed from 10% down to 5% (the buffer zone is non Bollgard cotton that can’t be sprayed for Heliothis). From there we went to “Plantation” to inspect Ed Simmons Sorghum crop, also entered in the competition, and we all went in a “yield” judging exercise. This competition was won by me, with an estimate of 8.96 ton per hectare. The crop was judged to be yielding 8.93 ton per hectare. A carton of beer was graciously accepted. Also at “Plantation” Loretta Serafin from the DPI spoke at the trial sites. The growers assembled indicated plant population and time of planting as the key factors for producing high yielding crops. Lunch was held back at the Premer Sports ground where David McGavin from Precision Seeding Solutions gave a brief talk on his products which can upgrade older Row Crop Planters to current metering devices. The photo shows L-R Allan Marney from Plantation Trading, Simon Thomson ,Frank Elsley, Rep from Parraweena Past Co, Mike Noman Staplegrove, Ross Durham Mullaley, at rear Ed Simpson from Plantation Trading. Following David's talk the presentations were held and he winners were as follows: Premer Shield for Champion Sorghum Crop: Mike Norman, Norman Investments, Staplegrove. Premer Rosebowl for Champion Sunflower Crop: Parraweena Pastoral Co. Premer Plate for Champion Wheat Crop: Frank Elsley, Spring Ridge. Mick Gaynor Trophy for Local Farmer of the Year: Plantation Trading, Spring Ridge. Wilf Hockings Memorial Trophy for Wheat Competition combined Mullaley, Tambar Springs and Premer: Ross Durham, Durham Farming, Mullaley. Local Competition Winners: Canola Crop: Doug Campbell Wheat Crop: Simon Thomson, Namoi Pty Ltd Sorghum Crop: Plantation Trading Pty Ltd

Upper Namoi Cotton Growers’ Association Awards A record number of 120 people attended the annual presentation night dinner at the Gunnedah Rugby Club where the region’s farmers were recognised for their achievements. Ian Carter with his wife, Marilyn, and son Harry of Connamara, Pine Ridge took out Upper Namoi Cotton Grower of the Year, their outstanding farm management and innovation sealed the victory. It was their sixth cotton crop grown on the 2700ha Liverpool Plains property with the award coming as quite a surprise. In other awards, first time-time cotton growers Brady and Kate Rutter from Quirindi took out the top award for the Highest Yielding Irrigated Cotton Crop, while the Highest Yielding Dryland Crop went to Neil and Geoff Barwick of Willow Tree. (Brady is the brother of Jamie Rutter - one of our wonderful office ladies.) Irrigated Cotton Crop Consultant was awarded to agronomist Adrian Nelson, while the Dryland Award went to Pete McKenzie. The Innovation Award was presented to Andrew Watson of Boggabri. Damian & Penny Haire won the award for the Highest Ginned Farm Yield.

Kate & Brady Rutter with Adrian Nelson

Goodwin Kenny would like to congratulate all the winners.

Winner of the Kootingal Motor Show Raffle was Val Stevenson of Curlewis and his prize was collected by Raelene Higgins (pictured).

Just to keep you up-to-date: I am sad to advise the passing of Alphonse Evans. Phonse, as he was known to many, was employed at Goodwin Kenny from 1996 to 2003 as one of our Tamworth Salesmen in the era of Rod Bithrey and Allan Kedzlie. Phonse left our employ to retire and spend time with his late wife, Carol, and the family. He would often be seen at Agquip in recent years catching up with customers and having a chat - something he was pretty good at (like most salesmen!). Phonse was 83 years old and recently suffered from Kidney failure and passed away at Tamworth Base Hospital following surgery. He was one of nature’s gentlemen and I would get a phone call every now and then from Phonse and he would catch me up on all the local gossip. Our sympathies to the Evans family.

The Tamworth Taste Festival Long Lunch on 10th April was a great day out in Anzac Park with 250 people in attendance. Delicious food from local restaurants, cold beer from New England Brewery, tasty wines from Merilba Estate, great background music from Gibbo & the best ingredient of all - good company. Tindaroo’s Clearing Sale was held on Saturday 16th April at

Nundle with over 600 lots and well over 300 registered bidders - there was something for everyone. I brought home a couple of little mementos (China and Linen) of Tindaroo and also a couple of larger ones - which, when made into Garden Sculptures, I have promised to share the photos in the Newsletter as a few customers at the sale were not sure what I was going to do with a set of 1963 Wool Scales and an even older cement mixer! Thank you to a few more of our customers for the “muscle” and helping me load the ute. A great social day out catching up so many people, but a bit sad also as we say Good Bye to Helen Cowdery and we wish her a happy retirement.

As sponsors of the Tamworth Jockey Club we were invited to attend the Tamworth Cup on Sunday 24th April. Thanks to the Jockey Club Committee and Kay Jeffrey, Sponsorship Co-ordinator, for a wonderful day out. Congratulations to all the winners (thankfully I backed a few and went home with a little more money that I started with) especially Glen and Mary Morgan with their son, Cody, and their horse Pelerin which won the Goodwin Kenny Class 2 Handicap. Did you see the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience at TRECC? I attended on Wednesday 27th April at the invitation of the Commonwealth Bank and Telstra. Tamworth was so lucky to be chosen to show this exhibition - it was well set out and informative and very moving.
