Dear Members,
Fall at Germania has been a very active and successful season. During the past few
weeks, I've had the privilege of attending our first Disco Night; the annual Schlachtfest;
and this past Sunday, the Singers' Fall Concert, "Wir Wandern Durch die Berge". The
Germania Singers sang their hearts out, thrilling their audience with several songs from
"The Sound of Music". My sincere congratulations are offered to Pat Kemmerer and Katherine Ulrich, who were
each awarded plaques from the New York State Sängerbund, commemorating their 60 years in the Germania
Chorus.
The Germania Almrausch Schuhplattlers have just completed their busy fall season, where they showcased our
German heritage, in very popular performances, especially those featuring our delightful Kindergruppe,
who are always sure to draw many smiles from their audiences.
Congratulations are also due our Blue and White Soccer Teams, who just finished their fall schedules by placing first
in the "Over 30 League" and also were the champions of the "Open League Tournament."
On November 2, I had the honor of attending the Steuben Society Memorial Service, at the Wartburg in Mt. Vernon,
NY, together with 14 members of the Dr. Charles G. Spross Unit 167, which is one of our affiliated clubs. Members
of the national Steuben Society, from units throughout the USA, who had passed away during the past two years,
were memorialized. These included our own members, Jon Wagner, Karl Holl and Werner Gross.
The approaching holidays always remind us that none of the many events and accomplishments achieved by
Germania would be possible without the members, who have again given so generously and tirelessly of their
talents, time, and financial support, which deserve our thanks and gratitude. So far, we've been able to keep our
heads above water, in spite of decreasing attendance at our Friday Night Dinners and Biergartens. However, the
lunch crowd has been increasing nicely, thanks to the efforts of Grete Licis and Jim Gordon and their team.
Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Kinder Halloween Party, due to lack of participation. Please keep in mind that
only your continued support will make 2014 another banner year for Germania. It's important to remember that we
are always in need of volunteers for bar-keeping, baking, cooking, serving, decorating, gardening, and other
committee work.
As of this writing, plans for our annual Christkindlmarkt, on November 22, and 23, are in their final stages. The
baking has begun, decorations are going up, vendors are in place, and kitchen and bar staff are ready. Helga Nowak-
Razey and her committee have done everything possible to ensure a festive and fun event, which allows us to shop in
pleasant surroundings, and to enjoy fellowship at the beginning of the Yuletide season. Christmas has always been
my favorite holiday, not just because of the exchange of gifts, but for the joyous spirit that fills our hearts at this time
of the year. Celebrating German traditions with our families and friends, as well as forging new traditions, make it
possible for us to keep the spirit of joy alive, no matter what the weather of the circumstances may be. I hope that
we all can spend time celebrating the season together. There are many opportunities for us to enjoy each other's
company, starting with the Christkindlmarkt; the adult Christmas Party on December 7; the Kinder, and the Soccer
Club Christmas Parties, on December 14; the Weihnachtsmesse at the First Lutheran Church in Poughkeepsie, on
December 15; and of course, the finale to 2013, our New Year's Eve Party. I hope you can attend some (or all) of
these outstanding occasions.
I wish you and your families eine recht froehliches Weihnachten und eine guten Rutsch ins Neues Jahr 2014.
Sincerely yours, Carol Ann Fischer, President

NOTES FROM GERMANIA MEN & LADIES SINGERS
By Janett Frank
We are happy and proud to once again donate funds as in years past, for the Annual
Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, under the
guidance of our long-time member, Theresia Kizina.
We have sent sympathy cards to Mrs. Oskar Benzenhoefer on the passing of her husband in September. Oskar,
a tenor, sang with the Kingston Maennerchor and Dammenchor. He also was known as “The Father of
Saugerties Soccer”. He coached and managed teams, officiated games, lined fields, put up nets and organized
competitions. In 1995, he was inducted into the Saugerties Hall of Fame. In 1997, he had a field named after
him in the Washington Avenue Sports Complex. Oskar had his own business with his sons and worked on
many homes throughout the Hudson Valley Region. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth, his sons
Gerhard and Robert, daughters Ann Koehler and Inge Mesiina, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren
and his sister Gertrude Fischer.
We also extended our sympathy to Jerry Van Duzer on the passing of his sister, Ann Jecks. Ann, a past member
of Germania, attended many of our concerts and affairs along with her friend Frank. We will all miss her, Jerry.
The Singers cooked and served Pork Schnitzel under the supervision of Helga Nowak-Razey and her volunteers
on Friday night, November 15th
.
There will be Carol Singing during the first week of December for members who are home bound or are in
nursing homes. On Sunday, December 15th
at 2PM, we will be participating in the Weihnachtsmesse at First
Lutheran Church, along with singers from the Entwicklungszeiter (Teenager) Chorus, and the Men and Ladies
chorus. Readings during the service in German will be by members of Germania, including the Singers, Soccer
Club and Steuben Society. Fellowship will follow after the Service.
Closing with our sincere greetings of Merry Christmas to one and all and hopes of a Wonderful New Year to
Follow!!!! Fröhliche Weihnacten und Glückliches Neues Jahr!!!!!
GERMAN LANGUAGE CLASSES AT GERMANIA
After a 6 month hiatus, the German classes will resume on January 9, 2014.
The classes will be held every Thursday from 6:00pm to 6:45pm. Beatrix Clarke
will be teaching the class, replacing Hans Heinrich Franzen-Nicholson who has
resigned due to health issues. We sincerely thank Hans for all the work, time
and effort he dedicated as our German class instructor the past two years.
Beatrix Clarke (nee Bausch) was born and grew up in Zurich, Switzerland and
immigrated to the United States in 1979. She has lived in Poughkeepsie for the
past 23 years. Beatrix has a BA in Foreign Languages (GERMAN) from Manhattan College and taught at
Manhattan College and in the Poughkeepsie Continuing Education Program. She is currently a school nurse in
the City of Poughkeepsie’s Early Learning Center. She is looking forward to meeting all the members and
friends who are interested in attending the class.
For further information and to sign up for the class, please call Sylvia Reuter at 914-882-0200 or email her at

THE GERMANIA HERITAGE PROJECT is in its halfway point, with 10
immigrants interviewed so far! I am looking for at least ten more members who would like to
share their stories of coming to America and joining Germania. The stories I have recorded
are truly inspirational and a testament to all those brave souls who overcame obstacles and
risked everything to become American citizens. I have learned so much these past few
months, and I look forward to hearing from more Germania members who would like to contribute. I only ask for an
hour of your time so I can tape your story. Your photographs or other cherished mementoes can be scanned and
included in the project as well. The stories will be
published in a book that highlights the role Germania
and other organizations played in immigrants' arrival and
assimilation. (the photos show me interviewing Herb
Wenskus and Elizabeth Szabo-Calabrese with my digital
recorder.)

VIELEN DANK PAT By Janett Frank
The Singers would like to say thank you to Patricia (Pat) Ann Fitzgerald Kemmerer, our IRISH President of the
Germania Men and Ladies Chorus since 1997.
A little background on Pat, in her own words. “In 1953, Janett (Wermter) Frank and I
were walking home from Poughkeepsie High School and she asked me if I would like
to go to Germania to have some fun and join the singers as well as to learn to dance.
So began my history with Germania. Under the guidance of member ‘Uncle’ Willi
Sattelberg, we all learned to properly approach our partners and learn to waltz,
polka, fox trot, tango and rhinelander. Under the guidance of Ruth Carlon, we
learned to present plays in German. From there we formed the Hudson Valley
Tyrolians, the first Schuhplattler group of Germania, led by Otto Schmidt. We
danced from Beacon to Gloversville for the fun of it with our dirndl’s and
lederhosen that were made in Germany. During this time, I also joined the Lady
Singers. Mr. Hochmuth, ‘Uncle Julius,’ asked me to sit next to Mrs. Martha
Kemmerer. He said that she was going to be my future mother-in-law. Who knew
that he was a psychic?”
In the mid 60’s under the guidance of Mr. Hochmuth, Pat, Katherine and Janett
revised the Germania Children’s Chorus which became the largest non-school sponsored chorus
in the Hudson Valley. The trio volunteered at that position for well over 10 years. Note: A picture of that chorus can
be found in the 150th Anniversary Germania Booklet.
Pat was the Vice-President of the Ladies Chorus from 1960 through 1970. In 1971, Pat became the Treasurer of
Germania. During 1974-1977, she became the Second Vice-President of the United Women’s Chorus of Central
New York. That was before the Men and Women’s Chorus became the New York Sängerbund. She was co-chair of
the Sängerfest held in Poughkeepsie in 1974 and also Music Committee Co-chair. In 1974 and 1975, she was a
Trustee of the Board and was Publicity and Membership Chairman for the years of 1975-1976. During her years as a
singer, but a non-member of the board, she was asked to chair many affairs, especially the New Year’s Eve Dances
with her husband, Rony, and Janett and her husband, Babe. As you can see, she has given much of herself to
Germania above and beyond the call of volunteering. It is with great pleasure that we honor her today as she is
retiring as President of the Men & Ladies Choruses at the end of this year. Thank you for all you have done. It has
been a great 60 years!!!

To all my friends at Germania, I would like to thank everyone who expressed their concern about my family in
Cebu City, Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan (known as Yolanda) left a massive scene of death and destruction.
I am very fortunate that my family are all okay and property damage is small in our city in comparison to the
northern tip of the island that was hit the hardest. Our neighbors living on the islands to the east like Leyte
(Tacloban is its capital) and Samar suffered the worst of it all. Cebu and Bohol are still experiencing aftershocks
from the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that shook the islands on October 15, 2013. Just as people are starting to get
over the powerful earthquake that shook the ground, Haiyan/Yolanda unleashes it’s fury from the sky. Our
hearts go out to the many who lost their loved ones and for the many survivors with no access to food, clean
water and medicine. Many of you have asked how you can help or where you can send your donations to.
FEED THE HUNGRY INC. is an organization which provides assistance in times of natural disasters in the
Philippines and is a good option for international donors. You can go to their website at
www.feedthehungryphil.org and click on the upper right hand corner of the page which reads “Appeal for Help
for those affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda”. This opens up to another page where below the map of the
Philippines, you will find information and options on how and where to send in your donations.
Once again, thank you for your kind expressions of concern. In the remaining days until Christmas, let us keep
the victims of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in our prayers. - Sylvia Reuter, Membership Co-Chair

RONALD HERING, age 88, died in Hudson, Florida on September 27, 2013. He was a life
member of Germania; a member since 1957. Ron was born on March 6th, 1925 in
Nuremburg, Germany to parents Karl and Katherine Kemmerer Hering. The family
immigrated to the USA in 1929 settling in Poughkeepsie, New York, thus joining family
members that had previously immigrated. A 1943 graduate, he then served with the 208th
Combat Engineers during WW II, from the Beaches of Normandy to Berlin. He retired
from IBM in 1985 and moved to Florida. He is survived by his three children; John F.
Hering of Poughkeepsie NY, Katharine and her husband Fred Gugumuck of Swanton VT,
and Ronald L. Hering and his fiancé Angela Myers of New Port Richey FLA, 6
grandchildren, and several cousins in the Poughkeepsie area.

On Sunday, November 10th
a bright shiny Sunday, the Germania Men and Ladies singers gathered once again to
delight members, guests and friends to a wonderful hiking trip through the Alps. Wir wandern durch die
Berge. While the chorus sang songs from The Sound of Music such as The Sound of Music, Edelweiss and
Climb Every Mountain, the audience was treated to a video of a journey through the mountains, presented by
singer Philip Franzen-Nicholson and Director George Calabrese. We were happy to have Honorary President,
Janett back singing recovering with her broken foot and Helmut Loibl recovering from a severe reaction to
medication.
Following the concert, hors d’oeuvres were served and a wonderful meal of chicken marsala was cooked by
Margarethe Killmer, along with the help of George and Ulrike Engelhardt, and Helga Nowak-Razey. It was
served by our kitchen helpers, Lore and Karl-Heinz Schoenfield and servers, Rosemarie Loibl, Sylvia Reuter
and Helga Nowak-Razey. We wished to thank all who volunteered for this wonderful day. Music followed by
Joe Unger.
During a break, Patricia Ann Fitzgerald Kemmerer and Katherine Kemmerer Ulrich were presented with 60
year honoree singer certificates from the New York State Saengerbund. This honor was presented by the
President of the Bund, Hermann Koelmel and Secretary of the Bund, Helga Nowak-Razey. Pat and Katherine
will be receiving in the mail special pins and certificates from the German Bund. In addition, Frances Kalble
received her 15 year certificate, as well as, Helmut Loibl and Fred Siemer who received their 5 year
certificates.
CDs and DVDs of the concert are available for $5.00 by contacting Philip at (845) 724-3209. Philip will donate
the money back to the Singers.
A special thank you to Barbel Zehnbauer for decorating for our concerts, and Margot Berghofer for handling
our publicity.
An extra-special thank you to George Calabrese, Our Italian Director, who is slowly learning our German
language from his Hungarian wife, Elizabeth (Liz), which makes our rehearsals very enjoyable. Also, we
would like to extend our appreciation to Philip Franzen-Nicholson, who arranges much of our music, and his
spouse, Hans, who is always there to help out when needed.

MEET THE MEMBERS
BOB AND JOAN MAGEE We were first introduced to Germania by several of our dancing friends. From the moment we entered the building we encountered a welcoming and friendly environment like no other we had experienced. That environment and our preference for traditional German music led to our applying for membership in the organization. Natives of Long Island and married for fifty one years, Bob and Joan are the proud parents of four children: Robert Jr., Thomas, William and Linda Piatek, and eight grandchildren. Bob is a Mechanical Engineer graduating from Worcester Polytechnic institute and is retired from IBM Microelectronics Division. Prior to IBM, Bob was employed by General Electric in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Joan attended SUNY Oneonta and is retired from Marist College. I guess it is no secret that we both love to dance and try to never miss an event at Germania but beyond that, we both enjoy playing golf and traveling which we do frequently as we travel to the corners of the country to visit kids and grandchildren. Bob builds furniture with his son and flies radio controlled aircraft. Joan is an avid reader and more recently, spends a substantial amount of time researching the family genealogy. We are both committed to the ongoing success of Germania, its leadership and Gemütlichkeit which permeates the organization.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Bob and Joan are also volunteers at Germania!
Both Membership co-chair, Sylvia Reuter, and myself welcome any member of Germania to contact us if you would like
to write something about how you heard about Germania, when you joined and the events you've been attending and
enjoying, if you have volunteered at any event or are volunteering for any future events, and any personal background
fellow members may enjoy. And of course we always enjoy immigration stories, and favorite pastimes at Germania.
Whether you are a new member or a longtime member, let's hear from you!!! Send all submissions, and a picture of
yourself, to [email protected]. I am also willing to "interview" you if you prefer. I also welcome suggestions
on who we should feature in future newsletters. You can call me evenings and weekends at 845-471-7442.

GERMANIA BARKEEP
Did you know Germania has a Bartender team of over ten
active members?! Bartenders, otherwise known to as our Master Mixologists, are all volunteers and log in extensive time
throughout the year supporting our club...they are always there for Germania events, weekly evening member hours,
weekend rentals and even to staff the Oktoberfest and Maifest beer truck.
In order to boost Germania's bottom line, Bartenders organize
and host the annual Fasching celebration, personally donating every bit of food for a home cooked buffet dinner, complete
with fixings and desserts. Come on out for our next Fasching, Saturday, February 22, 2014! Last year was a hit and this
year tickets are sure to be limited.
The Germania bar is a significant
source of income for our club. To help insure bar operations run
smoothly, Bartenders work to maintain an ongoing inventory
process. Daily records are kept and used to keep track of usage, as well
as help ensure efficient storage and targeted purchasing.
May sound like a load of work, but really lots of fun! The
Bartender team is always looking for volunteers. Interested in becoming a member of the Bartender team? Have ideas,
suggestions, special drink requests....get in touch with our Bar
Chair, Bill Reuter, 914-882-0307, [email protected].
So next time you see one, reach out and give high five to one of our bartenders! Thanks members for supporting our Bar and
our volunteers! Happy tending!
BAR HOURS CHANGE

MEMBERS WHO MADE NEWS IN THE POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL
by Janett Frank
Thursday, August 8th in the Sports Section- in a full page spread in PINK titled GOALS FOR
HOPE, you would find a wonderful picture of LUANNE MCDONOUGH, wife of member Jeff
Mc Donough, goalie for the over 40 Blue & White Soccer Team and her sister, ROSE GREENE,
wife of member Mitch Green, who is also a member of the over 40 Blue & White Soccer Team.
Luanne has been working as a volunteer ever since Goals for Hope started a decade ago. This
event has raised over $500,000 for breast cancer programs. It was only appropriate to honor her
in this year’s event after her own battle. Luanne was able to play once again this year along with
her daughter, Kelli, a niece and one of her six sisters, Rose, and Jane Lucente, fiancée of
member, Joseph Ulrich. Congratulations to you Luanne and all the 650 wonderful women who
took part in this tournament at the LaGrange Soccer Complex, along with their husbands who
helped out.
September (date unknown) in the Good Life Section “Your Positive Achievements” you would find a wonderful
announcement about our past Vice President and long-time member, WILFRED H. ROEHE. Wilfred, a 47 year
member, was one of 750 district governors installed at a ceremony in Hamburg, Germany for the Lions Club
International Convention. For the next year, Wilfred and the other installed members will oversee approximately
45,000 Lions clubs, consisting of 1.35 million members in 206 countries. He has been an active member of the
Amenia Lions Club, part of the 20-0 district that includes Columbia, Greene, Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess and Orange
counties. Lions in his district are involved with service projects with the visually impaired, the hungry and
environmental protection initiatives. Congratulations Wilfred and good luck to you. Keep up the good work with the
Lions.
Saturday, October 26th in section B Mid-Hudson you would find a wonderful picture of member HERB REDL and
wife Sue Ann along with Peter Bienstock of Princeton, N. J. and Joan Sherman of the City of Poughkeepsie. Dennis
J. Murray, president of Marist College, awarded them Philanthropists for Outstanding Service to the Hudson River
Valley for Dedication, Service and Excellence at the 46th Annual President’s Community Breakfast on the college
campus. President Murray said that Herb and Sue “share a commitment to give back to the community, especially
the sick and needy.” He also stated, “you’ve always gone out of your way to use your resources to help those who
have little.” Congratulations to both of you!
