~~ April 5, 2020 ~ Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Dear Parishioners: Today we enter into Holy Week with Palm Sunday as we begin our walk with Jesus day
by day through His last week on earth, the week that changed the world. This week continues and comes to its climax with the Sacred Triduum, which is Latin for “holy three days:” Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, ending in the evening on Sunday after the Easter Sunday Masses. This is such a special and sacred time for us. God has in store special graces and blessings for us this week if we just give Him our time. We need those graces and blessings so much right now. We need to live this week well close to the Heart of Jesus more than ever.
The Gospel for Palm Sunday today recounts the day on which Our Lord entered into Jerusalem on a donkey, when the people hailed Him as King while waiving Palm branches and crying out: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” Those shouts of “Hosana,” however, would soon turn into shouts of “Away with Him, Crucify Him!” Jesus entered the Holy City of Jerusalem hailed as a King, but His Kingdom is not of this world.
The solemn reading of the full account of the Lord’s Passion is a highlight of the Palm Sunday Liturgy as we become a part of the story, not just recalling an event from the past, but experiencing it and making it present right here and now. In the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ we see all the darkness and sin that lurks in the human heart come to the surface and do its worst on Jesus. Jesus submitted Himself for a brief time to the power of evil in order to swallow it up in the Power of Divine Love. Even though the battle between good and evil still goes on in our world and in our hearts, it is only for a time. The Cross and Resurrection of Jesus assures us that evil does not have the last word, that good will triumph over evil, love will triumph over hate, life will triumph over death. We have to live through the darkness of Good Friday in order to arrive at the Light of Easter Sunday. That is what we are doing in a very real way right now in this strange and uncertain time.
Even though the beautiful and solemn Liturgies of Holy Week have to be done in private without a congregation this year, please enter into them at home. We will tape and upload the Mass of
Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday celebrated in our Church on our Parish Website. We also have uploaded for you to pray with us from home the Stations of the Cross, and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and Benediction from our own Church.
The Solemn Liturgies of the Sacred Triduum – the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday Night - can be seen live streamed from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Television on Pix channel 11, or on EWTN which will also carry the Liturgies from the Vatican with Pope Francis.
This is the Week for all of us to join forces in prayer for an end to this pandemic, that the spread of this virus will begin to subside, and that our way of life will return to normal very soon after Easter. May the power of the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus change our hearts and bring healing and peace to our world, to our Country, to our Church, to our families, and to our hearts. And may the graces and blessings of Easter be yours in abundance. “We adore you O Christ and we praise you, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.” May God bless us all.
Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J. Furey
As directed by the Archdiocese, so that we remain mindful of everyone’s health, palms will not to be distributed to the faithful at this time. They will be blessed
at a later date using the form of blessing outside of Mass. We will announce the date of distribution as time goes on.
HOLY WEEK We have been directed by the
Archdiocese that all Holy Week services, Easter Triduum and Easter Masses, cannot be open to the public
but will be celebrated by parish priests & deacons in private. This is to comply with the civil ban on public gatherings
until this crisis passes. Daily Mass offered in our church by our Priests is now uploaded every day on our parish website stmartindeporres.org for you to watch at home. We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

A Message from Cardinal Dolan: Just like you and your family, the parishes of the archdiocese are suffering from this crisis as well. Now, perhaps more than at any time in recent history, your parish and the archdiocese need your help. It can’t survive without you. Now that our public Masses have been cancelled for an undetermined period of time, I am appealing to you to support your parish by continuing to share your gift of Sunday offertory. These funds are critical for the continued operation of your parish at this unprecedented moment in time. Your parish does so much more than offer Sunday Mass. It is there in the happiest moments in your life – wedding, baptisms, first communions – and is a source of comfort during some of the most challenging, during times of sorrow like the death of a loved one. There are prayer groups, food pantries, social activities, schools, and on-going religious education. All of this depends on you! Please continue, at a minimum, with your current level of support. One easy way to do so is through your parish’s online giving provider; a majority of our parishes use WeShare. Your parish’s online giving account can be accessed through the parish’s website. I know your pastors will be most appreciative and relieved to know that they can depend on receiving your continued offertory support each Sunday. I am not being alarmist when I say that without your support, your parish may be seriously undermined.
25th, 50th, 60th, 65th, 70th, 75th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION All couples who will be married either 25, 50, 60, 65, 70, or 75 years in the year 2020 are invited to the parish celebration on Sunday, May 3rd at the 11:30am Mass. There will be a reception following the Mass in the school. Please call the parish office to Register by Monday, April 27th
St. Corona: Patron Saint of plagues and epidemics. (believe it or not, St. Corona really is the Patron Saint of plagues and epidemics. She is believed to have been martyred in the second century in Roman
Syria during the reign of Marcus Aurelius). Lord Jesus Christ, You came into this world for our salvation. Look kindly on us now, we pray, that we, and all those who serve You, might be kept safe from this pandemic. Heal those who are sick, comfort the suffering, bring back those who have gone astray, and above all, increase our faith, O Lord. Give us the grace to follow You and, like the martyr St. Corona, who gave her life for love of You, to take up our crosses daily without fear or hesitation. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on us and on the whole world. St. Corona, patroness of epidemic victims, pray for us.
Nine Day Novena for an end to the
Coronavirus Pandemic (as adapted from Bishop Douglas J. Lucia special novena prayer for an end to Coronavirus pandemic) O Mary, full of Grace, Patroness of this nation and Mother of the Church, in this time of illness and worldwide need we seek your intercession for the human family before your Son’s throne of grace and mercy. We ask for strength in adversity, health in weakness, and comfort in sorrow. Help us O Blessed Mother to be filled with confidence and trust in the tender compassion of our God. Let us not be afraid like our own St. Martin de Porres who entrusted his life and ministry among the outcast of society into the care of our Divine Physician. Continue to watch over all who are sick as well as those who care for them and give wisdom to all who are seeking a cure. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen
