Needed: Lead Coordinator for Cold Weather Shelter

Cold Weather Shelter Thinking about taking the lead? Some key details to help you decide:!Need: Lead coordinator for the weeklong program! When: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2014!Where: New Hope Adventist Church!Who: Local men, women and children who are homeless!Questions: [email protected]

For the past two winters, New Hope has opened its doors to area men, women and children without homes for one week as part of its Cold Weather Shelter.!New Hope is one of several area churches that acts as a winter overflow shelter for one to two weeks from November through March, hosting guests from Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, a Howard County homeless shelter. For our church, the weeklong program has built on a decade of similar outreach; yet while our Winterhaven program served homeless men from the area and beyond, Cold Weather Shelter expanded our reach to women and families and focused in on individuals in Howard County. !This winter, New Hope is scheduled to house the shelter Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2014. But to do this, we need someone — a capable and energetic leader who is willing and ready to serve — to organize the program and lead in coordinating the week’s activities. This is no solo job, of course: The Cold Weather Shelter coordinator would work with other volunteers who would be responsible for specific activities and events (i.e., crafts, meals, laundry and overnight staffing) and ensure that all the necessary gears are in place for the week to run smoothly.!While we’d like to host the shelter for our third consecutive year and continue this form of outreach to our community, we will not be able to do so unless someone volunteers to lead this effort. !So think about it. Pray about it. And, if you’d like more information or feel called to take on this role.

“In a few minutes, we will be going through a severe storm. There is no avoiding it. Therefore, please buckle your seat belt; make sure your belongings are stowed away. It will be very rough for a while.”

After the copilot made that announcement, the flight attendants determinedly prepared the cabin and the passengers for the turbulence to come. There was an air of anticipation and fear. I looked out the window and saw a massive column of dark and foreboding clouds ahead. It was going to be rough.

The turbulence hit hard and the airplane jerked violently. We dropped altitude significantly, and everyone screamed. Then the plane lurched from side to side, and we felt like we were going to roll completely over. The overhead bins began to shudder and one bin popped open. Baggage rained down on people and into the aisles. The plane’s engine whined at such an intense pitch that it added to the sense of panic and chaos. It really seemed like the entire cabin was falling apart as people cried and screamed.

In the middle of the bedlam, I heard the voice of the little girl sitting behind me.

“Momma, are we going to die?” she asked.

Her mother quietly replied, “Honey, we need to trust God.”

The girl was silent for a few moments. Then she asked, “If we trust God, will He make the storm stop?”

That innocent question stayed on my mind a long time. If we trust God, will He make our difficulties go away? If we trust God, will our financial problems dissolve? Will our diseases disappear? Will our difficult coworker leave? Will our marriages get better and our children come back to church? Will He really make the storm stop?

I believe that trusting God means to trust that He will be with us in the storm. He will strengthen us and give us what we need.

When we are in the middle of difficult times, our prayers tend toward asking God to take away that difficulty. We trust God to take care of it all. But I have realized that storms come. Sometimes they stay a long time. Sometimes they never leave.

Are you willing to trust God if the storm does not stop?

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31).!

The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

Weekly Challenge Start each morning this week by asking God to help you trust Him wherever He leads you that day. Then be alert to what happens as you let God lead.!

For the Family As a family, go on a “trust walk.” Pair up, then blindfold one person in each pair. Have the sighted person lead the blindfolded person around the house or yard. (Be careful that no one gets hurt during this activity.) You could even set up a simple obstacle course for pairs to complete. Afterward, talk about what it means to trust and the importance of trusting in God.!
