Follow the bread crumbs! That’s the advice New Hope member Sherri Ingram-Hudgins would give anyone trying to figure out what God’s plan is for them.

Her trail of crumbs began in a quiet moment, in intensive care, not knowing whether she was going to live or die. Ingram-Hudgins, a mother of two who has attended New Hope for nearly a decade, felt God telling her, “I have more for you to do.” (One crumb.) She didn’t know what that “more” was at the time, but she knew she would discover what it was.

Before her hospital stay, Ingram-Hudgins, who is married to Worship Director Steve Hudgins, recalled being touched by her daughter’s generosity and desire to help people they would see on the street asking for food. It wasn’t long before Ingram-Hudgins found herself distributing care packages to the homeless in Langley Park, a community in southern Maryland.

After volunteering at a Howard County shelter, she was referred to the Rt. 1 Day Resource Center, a service of county shelter Grassroots that serves the many homeless individuals living along the Route 1 corridor. In working with the center’s clients, Ingram-Hudgins would hear story after story about how just $20, $35 or $50 could get someone on the road to hope. It was heartbreaking, knowing that literally a few dollars could make a world of difference in a person’s life.

Some advice from an old college classmate, who also happened to volunteer at the center, helped her look beyond the overwhelmingly sad stories to action. “What you have to do is figure out what YOU can do,” he told her,” and do it.” (Another crumb.)

It was enough to get her going. Armed with her background in computers, Ingram-Hudgins set out to show the center’s residents how to create a newsletter, The Homeless Gazette, and teach them to set up email addresses, search for jobs online, fill out online job

applications, post classifieds and more.

Inspired to go further by the many resident stories she’d heard, she came up with the idea of giving micro-loans ($20, $30 or more) to the residents. In

September 2012, about a year after her hospital stay, A Hat for Harold —

Ingram-Hudgins’ nonprofit designed to give microgrants to homeless individuals — was born.

What inspires her to do what she does?  Following Christ’s example to

“mingle with everyone,” in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-40: “‘For I was hungry and you

gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in’....‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

So what can YOU do the next time you see a homeless person? Make eye contact, smile, and say “Hi!”

MYNEWHOPECHURCH.COM/GIVE

A few years ago, I had the privilege of going through a corporate team-building program that involved a high ropes course. For three days, my colleagues and I climbed, jumped and repelled off walls, poles and platforms. Before beginning, we were instructed on the basics of climbing equipment, safety and how to use and adjust our harnesses. Most importantly, we were introduced to the concept of belaying.

Belaying refers to the techniques climbers use on a rope so that a falling climber does not fall or fall very far. Belaying is a critical part of the climbing system. The responsibility of belaying is usually given to a companion, the belayer, who remains on solid ground to support the climber. The belayer provides just the right amount of tension and technique on the climbing rope that holds the entire weight of the climber, often with relatively little force. By utilizing a mix of belaying angles and hand-grips on the rope a belayer can gently lower a climber to the ground or a safe point.

My assignment was to climb a 25 foot pole to a small platform at the top. I was to stand on that platform and attach a clip from my harness to the zip-line above me. Then upon my signal, I was to jump. My teammates were then to belay me gently and safely down to the ground.

I had never felt greater fear than when I stood on that small platform. I could not jump. I was paralyzed with fear. My teammates began encouraging me with positive reinforcement. They began a chant intended to bolster my courage. One teammate even offered to climb up the pole to be with me as I jumped. All the words and chants became jumbled noise to me. Then, I heard someone say, "Ann, we will not let you fall." And he kept repeating it until everyone else joined in. In one collective voice, my teammates assured me, "We will not let you fall."

"The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand" Psalm 37:23-24.

Do you trust God to be your belayer?
