Cianbro Inc., with expertise ranging from bridge building to steel fabrication to modular construction, and STARCON International, with a respected reputation across the country and Latin America in the oil refinery and chemical plant industries, are joining forces in a strategic alliance that promises to make each of them stronger. “The strategic alliance is an agreement that both compa- nies have entered into to work together, to pool our strengths. Both companies have unique strengths and we complement one another, because their strengths are not necessarily the same as ours,” said Peter Vigue, president of Cianbro. “Their customer base is different than ours, and, by working togeth- er, we can provide more value to a broader base of cus- tomers.” “I think it’s going to bring a great opportunity to both com- panies to expand our market share and also provide more diverse services to our clients,” said Michael Uremovich, CEO of STARCON. “Cianbro brings a unique set of skills and abilities to the table with their module shop, and their experience in the pulp and paper in the energy industry. STARCON brings our diverse market share across the United States, working with the oil industry and our field experience providing maintenance and capital construction in the refineries. And having Cianbro’s shop to back us up, to provide more diverse services to our clients is going to be a really big help to STARCON.” Like the fleet of equipment housed at Cianbro’s Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer, Maine, the deal, accord- ing to both sides, has many “moving parts,” but the agree- ment is expected to mean significantly improved job oppor- tunities for team members and for the Brewer facility. “We also have a scaffolding and insulation group. expertise in a widearray of construc-tion disciplines, thecompany nowbecomes an allywith the team atSTARCON to bidjobs which wereformerly out ofreach. For their part,STARCON allowsCianbro to gainsome of the respectin the oil and chem-ical industrieswhich took theHouston- andC h i c a g o - b a s e dcompany threedecades to earn.

“This alliancecreates an industry

powerhouse which willleverage our ability to cap-ture and execute large scalecapital, turnaround andmaintenance constructionprojects for our clients,”said Cianbro ChairmanPeter Vigue andSTARCON’s Uremovichin a joint statementannouncing the move.“The alliance is made pos-sible by the close align-ment of our individualcompanies’ culture, corevalues and team memberfocus.”

STARCON primarilyoffers mechanical andindustrial services to petro-chemical clients in theMidwest, the Gulf Coastand the West Coast, andhas international projectand maintenance experi-ence. Cianbro provides anarray of heavy constructionservices to industrial, civiland private clients on theeastern seaboard of the

United States. Both firms have significant

experience mobilizing to performlarge construction and mainte-nance projects throughout NorthAmerica. Cianbro operates thatworld class module facility inBrewer, Maine, sized to service theglobal fabrication market. STAR-CON enjoys a stellar reputation inthe refinery and chemical plantindustry across the nation and inLatin America.

“The oil industry and oil refiner-ies, particularly, aren’t places you

can just walk in and ask to bidwork,” said Vigue. “Reputationsmean a lot, past performancemeans a lot, the safety record isvery important to them. So, it takesyears to knock those barriers downand get opportunities to even bidwork. The fact that STARCON isalready established with theserefineries, gives us a leg up. Wecan go right in and establish our-selves as a company that can deliv-er without having to take the yearsof marketing and building trust andconfidence with people.”

“STARCON, at the same time, sees opportunities they can lever-age. They just don’t have theresources to do so,” he added. “So,we’re joining. It’s huge.”

John’s Gradall Service Flourishes With Collective Effort In Just Five Years, Small Family Company Has Grown Well Beyond Founders’Expectations

By Jay AdamsCEG CORRESPONDENT

Just five short years ago, a secretary for aconstruction company decided to leave heroffice to join forces with her husband’s sonto form a new company.

It was 2004 when Laura Scott and JohnSmith founded John’s Gradall Service inMansfield, Mass. They started as simply aspossible, with just the two of them asemployees and one machine.

Fast forward only a brief five years, andthe company has quickly grown to a dozenworkers and two-dozen machines.

The family brought a lot of experience tothe operation. John’s Gradall Service repre-sents years of collective teamwork, from thesmallest projects to the most complicated.Laura’s husband, Jack Smith, brought morethan 45 years of construction work to thefold, while his son, John, had been in heavyconstruction for all of his adult life.

What began with one Gradall has grownto more than a dozen, all on active rental.Additionally, the company offers a largeassortment of other equipment, such astrucks, Bobcats, dozers, excavators, loadersand various pieces of specialty equipment tomeet a variety of construction needs.

Beyond equipment rental, John’s GradallService performs vast assortments of otherheavy iron work, including road construc-tion, sidewalk reconstruction, septic sys-tems, and sewer collection systems, build-ing construction, site work, hydro-seeding,grading and all manner of excavation work.

A union company, John’s Gradallemploys union operators and all of itsemployees are 40-hour Hazmat and OSHAtrained. Its fleet of later model equipment iscompletely maintained by in-house staff, bolstered by the recent addition of notedregional technician George Ford, who is acertified Gradall mechanic.

“Everybody knows him,” said General

Manager Jack Smith.“He’s a top man. And we are already sell-

ing parts. We are a Gradall dealer, sellingused Gradall parts, repairing and replacingthem.”

The dream of John’s Gradall started sim-ply enough.

“I was a secretary at a construction com-pany. I wanted to start my own company,”said Laura Scott. “I financed this businesswith the sale of my house. I was trying to bea woman-owned company.”

Laura has been studying hard to satisfy astate and federal rule that requires that 10percent of people on job sites be a minority.

“I am on the way of becoming W.B.E.[Woman Business Enterprise].

Gradall’s XL Series excavators aredesigned to meet contractors’ needs forcompact, cost-efficient machines that canperform high productivity digging and dem-olition, as well as fine grading, according to

Scott, adding that “[these] low-profile, tele-scoping boom machines can work underbridges and tree limbs where conventional, knuckle boom excavators cannot, and areeasy to operate and maintain.”

Father and son, Jack and John Smith, have a lot of experience with Gradall. Johnhad run them for several years before start-ing the new family business.

“They are a unique unit, a special piece ofequipment,” he said. “They don’t knuckleunder. They are totally different from exca-vators. They can work in low clearanceareas, well under power lines. They don’tneed high clearance. They do the samework, with a lower profile. They can workhorizontally. That’s why they are unique.

“The rubber-tire machines will do 6 milesper hour down the highway,” he added.“You don’t need a lowbed [trailer] to movethem. They move well down the highwayand we use them a lot on the highways for

road work. They help get into really tightareas.”

John’s Gradall can cast materials fromone Gradall to another.

“Every size and model that Gradallmakes, we own it,” said Jack Smith. “Weown every model for every situation.”

These include the XL2300, XL2200,XL3100, XL4200, XL5100 Gradall withhammer, the XL5200 with hammer, and theXL2200 Gradall, which has a 360-degreeboom rotation. The milling head for theXL5100 and XL5200 also are available.

“We bought our first machine in Floridaand, in five short years, went from onemachine to 20 to 25. And some 90 percentgo out with our operators,” added JackSmith.

Since its 2004 founding, the small firmhas been gaining in reputation.

“We had a big job in the town ofWalpole,” said John Smith. “We built side-walks from absolutely nothing to the finish.City officials rented machines from me andthey did all the work in house, so they couldunderstand the process and [how] it wouldsave them money.”

Jack said word has spread quickly aboutthe new, small company located amid thedirt piles just after the concrete bridge southof the new mall at Mansfield Crossing.

“We have grown out of word of mouth. We’d like to keep getting out name outthere,” said Jack Smith. “We provide goodservice and we have good operators, gooddrivers and great mechanics.”

“Very few people have Gradall equip-ment,” added John. “And that’s how wegrew.”
