Noise surveys conducted
Montréal-Ouest:
• December 2008: Noise survey – Road component (study area of 300 metres from autoroute 20)
• November 2011: Cumulative noise impact – Road and rail components (study area of 300 metres from autoroute 20)
• 2017: Noise survey – Rail component (study area at more than 300 metres from autoroute 20)
13 Some information: Noise indicator
Noise level A-weighted Leq,24h (dBA) (L = Level and eq = equivalent) Indicator that cumulates all noise variations over a 24-hour period
Why use an indicator: • Mathematical expression used to represent a complex situation that varies in
time and space • Makes it possible to measure and compare the sound environment at different
geographical points, at different times of the day or year • Represents the impact of noise on a person’s health and discomfort
14
Noise scale
3 dBA barely perceptible variation 5 dBA perceptible variation 10 dBA double or halves noise level 55 dBA et - Recognized as an acceptable level
Noise levels do not ad up in a linear manner 2x noise sources ≠ 2x noise levels

Observations during noise readings (October 25-26, 2017)
2017: Noise impacts (study area at more than 300 metres from autoroute 20)
Area delimited by Brock, Carnavon, Ballantyne and Avon: • Noise from trains passing on CN railways is not the main source of noise • Passenger trains are barely or not audible • Freight trains are audible but noise is similar to ambient noise • Night: freight trains are more easily audible at night since noise levels from
roads are reduced

24 Noise follow-up: after completion of work
Noise follow-up required by government Decree No. 890-2010 (condition No. 15)
Must be conducted 1, 5 and 10 years after completion of work (2021, 2026 and 2030)
Objectives: • Ensure that noise levels from the infrastructure of the Turcot project have not
increased since before the project • Assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures (noise barriers)
If noise levels are too high:
• Adjustment of measures in place or implementation of new mitigation measures
25
