Mayor's message

We’ve had a challenging and exciting year in 2019. Our multi-award-winning Jo

Wheatley All Abilities Play Space, enjoyed by many, is a fitting acknowledgement of what can be achieved when organisations and people come together for a good cause. Local government is all about working in our community at the grassroots. It’s listening and responding to your needs, to ensure our beautiful City thrives. It’s also about planning for the future. In coming years, we will respect the values and character that has made our City so liveable as we enter a new chapter to meet the needs of changing demographics and demand for modern, efficient services. I am honoured and delighted to be Mayor of the Council at this very important time. I’m looking forward to engaging with you, as residents of the City, so that we can work

cooperatively on projects and plans, and to ensure that your best interests are considered in everything we do. I’m also looking forward to creating better relationships with other agencies and levels of government, as well as our neighbouring local governments. As we move into the summer months, I hope you will enjoy the many activities we have planned for you and your family, and that you will continue to engage with us throughout the year.

Happy holidays,Cilla de LacyMayor – City of Nedlands

The City of Nedlands is home to some of the most prestigious bushland in the

metropolitan area and we pride ourselves on the care and maintenance of these unique assets. Our Urban Forest Strategic Plan is a five-year process reviewed annually. By the year 2023, we aim to have increased the City’s urban canopy by a further 10 per cent.

Our urban forest enriches the quality of our lives and significantly reduces surface temperatures. We measure urban forests by the size of the tree canopy cover including branches and leaves, not just the number of trees. Having said that, the City is currently caring for an estimated 22,400 individual trees throughout our local government area.

This year we’ve replaced public trees where necessary, provided street trees to residents and ratepayers who have asked for them, planted infill street trees for road rehabilitations and progressed with greenway and bushland management plans. Our City’s Parks Services Officers have planted 547 trees this year, putting us right on target to meet our objectives.

Our Officers regularly check and analyse the health and condition of all public trees and record this information for planning purposes. Of all the trees planted this year, only 30 did not survive. This represents a high survival success rate of 94.5 per cent.

Keeping Nedlands green and thriving

The City will soon be starting work on Stage 3 of the river wall along the Nedlands foreshore. Have you wondered why we're building it the way we are?

The revetment and biscuit boulder style of wall has been used successfully in other river locations around South Perth, under the Narrows Bridge and the Old Swan Brewery. This style was chosen because:

• there’s less environmental impact than vertical walls

• it has the ability to weaken wave energy which reduces wave spray and damage to the foreshore

• it is cost effective and easier to construct and maintain

• Provides a great opportunity for landscape softening, and

• Prolongs the life of the wall

Which altogether means it’s an ideal long-term solution for our river foreshore.

New artwork on the way for Annie Dorrington Park The installation of a unique aluminium sculpture by local artist Tony Pankiw is soon to take pride of place at the new Annie Dorrington Park in Mt Claremont. Keep an eye open for its arrival before the end of the year.

At an award presentation held in Melbourne last month, the Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space won a coveted Architecture Award in the 'Play Spaces' Category of the 2019 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Awards.

The award cites Rotary Clubs from Nedlands, Subiaco and West Perth, the City of Nedlands and Earthcare Landscapes as project partners of this landmark facility.

Landscape Architect Fiona Robbé of Architects of Arcadia accepted the award on behalf of the project partners, stating the win as a tribute to the City’s visionary approach and ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders.

The City of Nedlands thanks all project partners for their insight and creativity from concept to construction, making the project an outstanding success.

The Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space is open from 8am-8.30pm seven days a week during summer, and is free of charge to enter.

Happy dog, happy daysWith summer now upon us, the dogs of Nedlands will be out and about at the park and on the beach. Be sure to keep your dogs on lead when walking in the street or in places not designated for off-lead activities. Accidents can happen if your dog is not under effective control.

We’ve had several distressing situations this year, where dogs off-lead have been injured or have caused injury to others, including two dog deaths. This year we’ve also had 91 reports of found or wandering dogs. Please follow the rules as infringements can range from $400 to $10,000.

Just remember,

• Training your dog to be sociable and obedient makes a happy dog, appreciated by you and your neighbours.

• Help to keep your parks and beaches healthy and clean by picking up after your dog.

• Mason Gardens is an on-lead reserve.

• Register and microchip your dog so we can contact you if your dog is found wandering.

• Dogs found without identification are taken to Swanbourne Veterinary Centre on Devon Road, Swanbourne. Additional costs will apply to collect your dog.

More information about dog exercise areas and responsible dog ownership is available on the City’s website or by contacting Ranger Services on 9273 3500.

Underground power progressesThe completion of the West Hollywood underground power project was a success, coming in under budget and ahead of schedule.

This landmark initiative was the first customer-funded joint project between the City and Western Power and proved a great example of cross-utility cooperation. As a result of this, and sound project management, Nedlands ratepayers will have approximately $250,000 distributed as a refund via their 2019-20 rates.

Two other projects, Claremont Triangle and Alfred Road (Town of Claremont project) and Alderbury Street, Floreat (Town of Cambridge project) include residents within the City. These projects have progressed during the year and when completed, will result in 78.5 per cent of the City having underground power installed.

Future underground power for the remainder of Nedlands is scheduled and updates will be provided in due course.

Christmas closureThe City of Nedlands offices will close for the holiday break at 3pm on Tuesday 24 December 2019. This will affect the Administration Centre, Depot, Nedlands Community Care and Nedlands and Mt Claremont Libraries. Tresillian Arts Centre and Point Resolution Child Care will be closed from Monday 23 December 2019. All offices will re-open on Monday 6 January 2020.

We’re a top performing local government in WA with high diversion from landfill, low waste costs

and strong customer service satisfaction levels. To keep annual waste charges low, we continue to work with our community to encourage positive behaviour towards minimising waste and maximising recycling.

In the past year, the City has achieved a 53 per cent diversion rate from landfill, meaning this waste was either recycled, reused or recovered. More than 22 per cent of residents are also using the second recycle bin option.

Our current waste services contract is due to expire in late 2020 and we will soon be preparing a new tender. Before this happens, we need your help to to find out more about waste management behaviours in your household.

Our quick and easy survey on the back page of this newsletter will provide valuable information on your household's waste and recycling behaviours. By completing the survey you'll also have the chance to win one of five $50 gift vouchers.

If you prefer, the survey is also available online at yourvoice.nedlands.wa.gov.au

Help us minimise waste

Reduce, re-use and recycle – a top priority for Nedlands

The City's Waste Minimisation Coordinator Chaminda Mendis knows how important children can be in influencing family members to be more engaged with recycling and sustainable living.

Through the Waste-Wise Program, the City has been working with students from Nedlands, Dalkeith and Swanbourne primary schools, playing educational games with practical activities explaining how waste management impacts their local community and the environment. If you’d like your school to become Waste-Wise, please contact Chaminda Mendis on 9273 3500 to book a free waste education workshop.
