DALKEITH NEDLANDS No. 2 NOVEMBER 1990 the committee. DALKEITH/NEDLANDS BOWLING CLUB REVIVED The new sign outside the Bowling Club reflects the new mood prevailing at Dalkeith/Nedlands. Having exceeded the goal of 50 new members during 1989/90, the Club is now reaping the reward. Seventeen new players have nominated for pennants for the 1990/91 season, a full team. Many of those new players are now introducing their friends to bowls on Sunday roll-ups. With thirty sets of bowls available, casual dress being the standard, and coaches in attendance, we have found a most successful way of recruitment. It is obvious the Club is now at its lowest point as far as pennant bowls is concerned - one 3rd and two 5th division teams. The object in 1990/ 91 will be to hold our 3rd and seek promotion of one 5th Division. With the continuing influx of new bowlers, time will be required for them to gain the experience in order to advance to further grades, and establish more teams. Due to the Club's healthy financial position, the Committee has seen fit to air-condition the Clubhouse and install a gas heater in the bar. These additions have been made for the comfort of members, which has to be a major consideration for Dalkeith/N edlands, with 312 members, is now the 9th largest Club in the Metro area. Our tWQ other great strengths for the future are Greenkeeper, Brendon Joyce (7 years service) and Bar Manager, Henry Stevens Cl year). Both make a tremendous contribution for the benefit of members who have the use of some of the best greens and bar service in the Metro area, on one of the most magnificent sites on the Swan River. ETIQUETTE OF BOWLSThere is a very informative notice on theClub board entitled "Etiquette of Bowls".All members are encouraged to study thedocument as it sets out clearly the "do's"and don'ts" to be followed by bowlers.

The following' important points arestressed:- ,(i) Directions by Skippers and Thirds

Skippers and Thirds, when directingthe head, are only entitled to instructor comment to their team when they

- "hav the mat:'.~-The..JL..havR..the...matas soon as their opponent's last bowlcomes to rest. At -that stage, theopposing director should stand clearof the head. They lose control of thehead as soon as their team's bowlcomes to rest. They must then standclear of the head until they get themat again.

(ii) Where to StandRule 50 states - "Players of eachteam not in the act of playing orcontrolling play shall stand behindthe jack and away from the head,or 900mm behind the mat. As soonas the bowl is delivered, the Skipperor player directing it - if in front'of the jack - shall retire behind it".

(iii) Kickirig the BowlsAt the end of a head, players -including the scorer - are expectedto assist in returning the bowls tothe mat area so that the next endmay commence without delay. Thelead in charge of the mat will indicatewhere he desires to lay the mat.

DECEMB~R 18

For the second time in 1990, oneof our active members is to turn "90"- Ted Ryan - who still regularlybowls.

Having joined' the Club in 1961, Tedhas never played pennant bowls, saying he was far too .good a golferat Cottesloe (6 handicap at ·best)to play pennant bowls. WifeDorothy, has also been a.champio~golfer at Cottesloe and ChidleyPoint.

Ted spent 30 years with "Ryan andThomas" tyre business in Subiaco.

A very popular chap at the bar, wewish Ted and Dorothy all the bestfor the future.

suddenly on a Monday after enjoyinghis bowls on the Saturday.

Robin had a long history with theUniversity of W.A, and Currie Hall.

As with his other pursuits in life,Robin served the Bowling Club witha great deal of enthusiasm. He firstheaded up the RecruitmentCommittee, then took over Greensthree years ago. The three majorgreens are now in excellent shape, with two others to be replanted.

Allwill sadly miss Robin. We pass onour sympathy to his widow, Norma.

VALE -JOCKJORDANAfter a long illness, Jock Jordan -...:...a recent Past President of the Club- passed away.

Jock, who spent his working dayswith E.S. Wigg & Son, will be long

a friend to all and one who had ~great affection for the Bowling Club;he will be missed. Our sympathy tohis widow, Alison.
