Fuel Cell Electric Buses (FCEBs) - A viable solution to meet GHG emission targets

CUTRIC’s Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration & Integration Trial (2018-2023)

Supports the development of hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) and hydrogen combustion propulsion technologies for fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs)

Conducted national consultation sessions to identify opportunities, challenges and commercial relevance of hydrogen integration among Canadian transit

Plays an instrumental role in garnering data on municipal/corporate plans on FCEB engagement, route selection and locating fuelling stations

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration & Integration Consultation Sessions

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration & Integration

Trial Phase I

On July 18 2017, CUTRIC hosted the first National Hydrogen Fuel Cell (HFC) Vehicle Demonstration &

Integration Trial: Phase I consultation session at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

On September 29 2017, CUTRIC hosted the second National Hydrogen Fuel Cell (HFC) Vehicle Demonstration &

Integration Trial: Phase I consultation session at Thales Canada, Toronto, Ontario.

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration &

Integration Trial Phase I

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration & Integration Consultation Session: Methodology

Participants formed semi-structured focus groups:

• Private sector (Manufacturers & suppliers)

• Transit agencies

• Government, academic & research organizations

Semi-structured session of

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration & Integration Consultation Session: Opportunities

Environmental Opportunities Meeting national GHG reduction targets and localized sustainability goals

Economic Opportunities Direct (selling electrons, developing IP) and indirect benefits (potential for job growth & retention as an incentive)

Global Relevance Advancing technology readiness of FCEBs, transferability of outcomes, and developing an integrated hydrogen fuelling supply chain

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration & Integration

Trial Phase I

Pan-Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration & Integration Consultation Session: Challenges

Economic Challenges High upfront costs, need for co-funding and large-scale trials, lack of long-term comparative economic assessments & lifecycle maintenance costs, and lack of educated advocacies for alternate propulsion technologies

Political Challenges Opposition to technological innovation, lack of communication, consistent funding model, lustre policy leadership and national policy mandate

Technological Challenges Lack of operating experience, technical know-how, and proactive leadership, along with extreme climatic conditions in Canada
