A short BioNader Vadiee, PhD represents SIPI in the areas of engineering and engineering technology, student outreach, recruitment,

education, and research.

He served SIPI as educational program coordinator from August 1994 to July 1998. He has rejoined SIPI as engineering

faculty and engineering programs coordinator since August 2004.

He has more than thirty five years of experience in STEM education, academia and industry and has conducted research,

solicited funds, designed, supervised, and offered courses in electrical engineering and computer engineering.

Dr. Vadiee served as project director of the highly successful undergraduate research program, NASA PURSUE, NASA

MURED PAIR Program, at the University of New Mexico. Funded for 4 years at $500k /year, approximately 125

undergraduate and graduate research and educational projects were sponsored. SIPI was a partner school under NASA

PURSUE program.

Dr. Nader Vadiee, SIPI engineering programs coordinator had an appointment with the UNM department of electrical and

computer engineering as a research associate professor for 1998 – 2005.

He was selected by the Carnegie Foundation as the 2009 New Mexico Professor of the Year. He is the 2015 AICF Faculty

of the Year.

Nader Vadiee also serves as on the New Mexico Math and Science Advisory Council (MSAC).

NASA Office Education has awarded the SIPI Engineering Program a three-year grant of

$783,000 to build a “ Information Technology Experiences using Simulated Tele-science Robotics Exploration of Mars”

project. 3

SIPI Overview

SIPI is an accredited national Indian community college with

students from over 100 Native Nations.

Approximately 450-550 students

Located in Albuquerque, NM

USDA Land Grant Institution since 1994

SIPI Mission Statement

Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute is a National Indian

Community College that prepares Native American students to be

productive life-long learners as tribal members in an ever-changing

global environment. As a land grant institution, SIPI partners with

tribes, employers, and other organizations with a stake in Indian

education. An enduring commitment to student success is the hallmark

of SIPI’s operations.

Vertically Integrated Pyramid (VIP) Approach to Research, Outreach, and Student Education (ROSE) in Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Math. (STEM):

The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (Albuquerque, N.M.) employs paid student internships not only to retain students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but also to encourage students in developmental courses to stay in college and pursue STEM careers.

Students are linked to each other as well as graduate students, instructors, and industry professionals via the Vertically Integrated Pyramid (VIP) Model that SIPI’s Department of Advanced Technical Education has crafted to build the relationships and the sense of community that are important to Native Americans.

For their paid work on engineering-related projects, SIPI student interns are usually under the direction of graduate or post-doctoral students who also serve as mentors. Increasingly, the graduate students are SIPI alumni who are enrolled at nearby universities.

The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute's (SIPI)

renewable energy program seeks to establish renewable energy technology hardware on and around the campus, which will supplement and create the educational resources to teach

renewable energy courses at its campus. Under the program, SIPI will design, install, operate, and

maintain photovoltaic, wind and solar hot water systems to be located at the SIPI campus and educate and train Native

American students in renewable energy technology.

During Spring 2016, Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 NASA

Scientists will conduct interactive Knowledge Capture

sessions with SIPI and SIPI’s Partner Schools. Partner

schools can either:

◦ Bus their students to the SIPI Campus for these

presentations, or

◦ We will deliver the program by computer link to their

classrooms

Brandon Ray and Tomczak Billie, SIPI Engineering Programs alumni

and SIPI I-C-MARS Project teaching assistants, attended the

DISCOVER STEM Week event held at the National Museum of

Nuclear Science and History, on February 4th, 2016.

SIPI team demonstrated remote operation of Mars RoadRunner Mini-

rovers located in the SIPI Mini-Mars-Yard via the Internet. Students

were able to take control of one of our two rovers and navigate

through the Mini-Mars-Yard web link. There also were "missions" for

the students to complete using the tools on the web interface for the

Mini-Mars-Yard.

SIPI's Autonomous Vehicles Research and Development Group:

Several students and faculty teams at the pre-engineering program at

the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) are currently

engaged with several projects focused on modeling, simulation,

development, testing and evaluation of un-manned and autonomous

vehicles. Some of the projects are as follows:

SIPI Autonomous Vehicles Research and Development Group:

- Mars Rovers ( SIPI NASA TCU ELO and NCAT-UTSA-SIPI

TECHLAV Project)

- Mars Exploration using UAV ( NASA TCU ELO – Project )

- Rockets with Science Payloads ( NASA New Mexico space Grant

Project)

- Swarmies ( The University of New Mexico - NASA Swarmathon and

Traffic control and transportation management for autonomous

automobiles Projects)
