MIAMI 2017 NABE NCBP NCBF MIDYEAR MEETING 1

Dear Bar and Foundation Leaders,

Welcome to Miami! We know your time here will be well spent, whether attending the meeting of the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE), January 31–Feb-ruary 2, the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP), February 2–4, or the National Conference of Bar Foundations (NCBF), February 2–4—or all three!

We’re glad to welcome you to the colorful, cosmopolitan city of Miami. With its trendy nightlife, Art Deco district, historic hideaways, shopping, sports, food and endless miles of beaches, Miami is the place to be! It’s also a great place for bar as-sociation and foundation leaders to gather to share ideas and learn from each oth-er, network, and attend the informative program sessions scheduled for this year’s Midyear Meeting. This booklet is designed to be your guide to the meetings, and includes descriptions of all three groups’ programming and events.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank the individuals who made this meet-ing possible. Please join us in extending our appreciation to our program sponsors by visiting them during the meeting sponsor breaks to explore their products and services. We also thank the NABE, NCBP, NCBF and MBC program committees and boards for their efforts to make the Midyear Meeting a success.

Finally, thank you for your attendance. We hope you enjoy all that Miami has to offer!

8:45 a.m.–9:30 a.m.Plenary Session—Foundations for Practice: Educating and Supporting the Whole LawyerBrickell/Flagler, Terrace LevelToday, bar leaders are faced with an ever-changing marketplace. Members expect value for their membership and their bar asso-ciations to provide real answers to their real problems. We’ve known change is coming, and that we must be nimble and adaptive to this wave of change. Well, that change is here, and it is real, and it will impact what we face daily. In this new environment, how do we ad-dress the needs of our members? What can we do to increase the value we provide our members as well as this very real change? Join Alli Gerkman as she presents an eye-opening report, Foundations for Practice, which pro-vides insight into what lawyers and law firms will need to be competitive now and into the foreseeable future. Alli will outline how bar as-sociations can play a unique role in addressing these needs for our members and how we can continue to provide meaningful value and real solutions. Don’t miss this opportunity to get a glimpse of the future of the legal profession and why bar associations still will matter to their members.INTRODUCTION

Even as work-life balance, meditation, and increased fulfillment and satisfaction have become a more central part of a profession-al’s goals, those aspirations may seem harder than ever to achieve. Our panelists have learned through law and life experience how challenging incorporating practices such as self-care and mindfulness can be, but they have also discovered the many wonderful benefits of these practices, including more joy and satisfaction. During this session they will talk about the importance of mind-fulness for the attorney. They also will offer practical tips and next steps to create robust mindfulness programs at your bar.SPEAKERS

How you communicate with all stakeholders from bar association staff, to the community at large, is just as, if not more, important. Track 3B—Gender Equality… It’s ComplicatedHibiscus A/B, Terrace Level For more than two decades, women and men have been graduating from law school in almost equal numbers, yet women re-

main poorly represented in leadership lev-els across the profession. In law firms and corporate legal departments, in academia, on the bench and in our legislatures, de-spite some well-intentioned efforts toward greater gender diversity and equality, little meaningful progress has been made to im-prove the stature of women in the law. Bar associations are not immune to the effects, with women attorneys leaving the profes-sion and our associations in greater num-bers than men. Recent studies confirm the complex nature of the problem and the challenges for the profession as a whole. The Florida Bar’s 2015 Young Lawyers Di-vision survey revealed that a great deal of gender bias still exists in the profession. Nationwide, that bias has been addressed and discussed in a variety of ways in the past year. Join us as we discuss the system-ic barriers to progress for women in law and what we as bar associations are doing and can do to help achieve greater gender equality in the legal profession.MODERATOR

The first virtual law office was created over 20 years ago, but the practice is still a new concept to many bar leaders. How do bars regulate law firms that don’t have “walls”? What models are out there for law firms to work in this new technology? What is the bar’s role in training, educating and mentor-ing virtual lawyers who have a completely different orientation from the “traditional” law firm? What are the career paths for vir-tual lawyers? This workshop will showcase services bars can offer to members who are operating without walls.MODERATOR

METROPOLITAN BAR C AUCUSThe Metropolitan Bar Caucus (MBC) is a sub-group of the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) that seeks to address the interests and the concerns of major metropolitan bar associations throughout the United States. Established in 1979 as the National Caucus of Metropolitan Bar Leaders, the organization became the Metropolitan Bar Caucus in 1993. At annual and midyear meetings held in conjunction with the ABA and the NCBP, the MBC presents programs exploring a variety of topics of importance to metropolitan bars.

9:00 a.m.–10:15 a.m.Friday Morning Plenary—Building Bridges Across Deep Divides—Bar Leaders As Trusted Conveners In Troubled TimesMonroe/Tuttle, Terrace LevelEvery day, news outlets and social media ex-pose deep community divisions—arising from police-involved shootings, immigration and religious differences, water rights disputes, etc.—that lurk below the surface, or erupt with violent and lasting consequences. Each of us faces the same big question: What are the roles of lawyers and the organized bar in addressing distrust, protecting rights, resolv-ing disputes and upholding the rule of law? We will examine recent flash points and bar responses—what bars can do, have done and should have done proactively, to keep and de-velop trust among diverse community stake-holders. We will share lessons learned, actions taken, plans in progress and communications

This conversion happens when donors un-derstand your organization’s dream, and what you need to make that vision happen. Learn how to take a coordinated approach to your public image, starting with your vi-sion and mission, and incorporating your public documents, like the 990. Whether you fill a seat on the Bar Foundation board or serve as its Executive Director, learn how donors and validators like Charity Navigator and the BBB Wise Giving Alli-ance use the 990 to evaluate performance, and how to implement the best business practices to attract sustainable investment.SPEAKERS

Workshop Session 5B— What Donors Want, Part II—Talk Impact, not Overhead: Strategies to end the Nonprofit Starvation CyclePearson I/II, 3rd FloorWe’ve all heard it. “For every $1 you give, 90¢ goes back into the community.” But is this the best metric to describe your results? Learn ways to shift the conversa-tion from overhead to impact, and identify operational strategies to end the nonprofit starvation cycle. Identify what drives do-nors to give and to stop giving, and how to position your work so that donors ask “What do good outcomes cost?” instead of focusing on overhead. SPEAKER

as the philanthropic arms of the legal profes-sion, and how to use that purpose and posi-tion to address the flash points that disrupt our society. In many cases, the bar foundation is the supporting partner of its respective bar association. Through charitable contributions, it also funds program that directly uphold the rule of law and ensure access to justice.Through this moderator-led discussion, you will learn about the actions some bar founda-tions have taken to address challenges in their communities and are invited to share your perspectives on how to facilitate the healing and conversation so necessary to a civil society.MODERATOR

The winner of this award must be a past president of a bar association; have demonstrated a continuing commitment to leadership, service, the work of the organized bar and the purpose of the NCBP; and have demonstrated a lifetime of achievement or exceptional service to lawyers or the public.

AWARD WINNERKarol Corbin Walker, New Jersey State Bar AssociationKarol Corbin Walker of Newark, NJ, has more than exemplified this award, serving as the first African American President of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA); the first African American female President of the Na-tional Conference of Bar Presidents; the first African American President of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey and the first New Jersey attorney appointed as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Standing Com-mittee on the Federal Judiciary (“SCFJ”).
