Dear bar anD founDation leaDers:

We welcome you to Orlando for the midyear meetings of the National Association of Bar Executives, the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the National Conference of Bar Foundations, February 2 through February 6, 2010. This booklet covers programming sponsored jointly by NABE, NCBP and NCBF, as well as events individually sponsored by each group.

NABE substantive programming begins on Wednesday, February 3, with an opening plenary by Chris Crowley, a retired litigator and author of the best-selling book, Younger Next Year. Crowley will share valuable, yet humorous insights on how exercise and healthful eating can help one feel better and look younger. Thirteen breakout sessions will follow, examining social media strategy and tactics, programs to entice young lawyers, reinventing non-dues revenues ideas, protecting data in a hostile technological environment and other key issues. NABE programming concludes on Thursday, February 4, with speaker Jay Gubrud’s comedic take on life balance.

Joint NCBP/NABE/NCBF programming starts on Friday, February 5, with the plenary session, “State Budgets, Court Funding and Access to Justice.” During this program, a panel of national experts will discuss the impact of the economic downturn on state court funding and how bars have proactively addressed the issue. Workshops will include a follow-up discussion on state court funding as well as sessions covering the use of technology by bars to help small firms and solo practitioners, effective message delivery, diversity in a post-Obama era, Ethics 20/20, membership recruitment and retention strategies, and other topics of interest.

The joint awards luncheon will recognize recipients of the NCBP Fellows Award, the NCBF /ALPS Foundation Services Innovations in Fundraising Award, Outstanding Law Day Awards, the Judge Edward R. Finch Law Day Award and the Louis M. Brown Awards. Following lunch, NCBP and the Metropolitan Bar Caucus will co-host the afternoon program, “Bar Leaders and Young Lawyers: Partnering Together to Shape the Future of the Profession,” a first-time conversation among state and local bar association leaders and young lawyer leaders with a common commitment to creating a better profession. NCBF ends the afternoon with “30 Ideas in 90 Minutes,” a session that will explore great lawyer/grantee mission linking events, Facebook and Twitter experiences—good and bad, and how to motivate boards to fundraise.

For NCBP, Saturday morning program highlights include lively breakfast roundtable discussions, a Town Hall meeting with ABA President Carolyn Lamm, an informative and entertaining presentation by Mike Rubin on “hot” legal issues and a session featuring great program ideas bars can easily replicate at home. NCBF will look at how bar foundations can measure and communicate the impact of their grant awards.

Each group hosts evening events designed to provide networking opportunities and a way to relax after busy days of travel or meet-ings. See your specific organization’s section of this program for further information on these activities.

Many individuals are to be acknowledged and thanked for putting these meetings together, including members of the program and sponsorship committees of each group. And, speaking of sponsorship, please attend the sponsor networking breaks to say thanks to our generous supporters and to determine if their products and services are right for your bar or members. We also thank the staff of the ABA Division for Bar Services for their help in planning our events.

We hope that you find the programming beneficial. Your feedback and suggestions are useful as we plan for future meetings, so please complete the evaluations that will be sent to you via email after the meeting. Have a “magical” time in Orlando!

Sincerely,

Jack Lockridge, NABE President

Track 5B: What’s In It for Me? Making the Case for the Value of Bar MembershipNorthern Hemisphere E3, 5th LevelFrom high-tech networking opportunities to the personal touch, bar associations are scrambling to remind members-and potential members-of the many tangible and intangible benefits that come with bar membership. What is at stake? For unified bars, it is an opportunity to ensure continued member interest and involvement; for voluntary bars, convincing lawyers that bar membership is a “must have” may mean the difference between survival and irrelevance. Join an outstanding panel of bar communicators to learn more about the innovative actions they are taking in identifying members’ needs, adapting to meet those needs and then enhancing member awareness. Track 6A: Loving---and Leaving---Your JobSouthern Hemisphere IV, 5th LevelThe question that looms in everyone’s future is: How do you leave this job that you love? The key to every successful transition is preparation—preparing your board, members, and staff. And then you must prepare your successor and yourself. How much time will you and your association need, and what is your role in the selection and training of your successor? Find out how other bar executives are handling this important issue. First, a state bar executive director will review the process his association used to develop a widely-acclaimed succession plan. Then, two retiring metropolitan bar executive directors will share the processes they have developed and are executing as they make the transition. MODERATOR

8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.State Budgets, Court Funding and Access to Justice: Sobering Facts and Tentative SolutionsState court funding has been dramatically impacted by the economic downturn. A New York Times editorial last November cited examples across the country of diminishing services, “a tangible narrowing of access to justice.” Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, in a speech to the New York City Bar Association, stated that state courts are “at the tipping point of dysfunction.” A panel of national experts and state and local bar leaders will discuss the impact of the crisis and share measures being taken to affirmatively address problems. A subsequent workshop session will feature additional approaches by other bar associations.

Joint Workshop 3A – Ethics 20/20: The Future is HereNorthern Hemisphere E2, 5th Level For U.S. lawyers and law firms from any demographic, technology and globalization are and will continue to be transformative. The profession must not just keep pace; it must look forward and think creatively to ensure contin-ued effective and ethical representation of 21st Century clients. ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm created the Commission on Ethics 20/20 to identify and propose, where necessary, solutions to the ethical and regulatory challenges that technology and globalization pose. Dur-ing this session members of the Commission will discuss with you the issues before it, and how you, as leaders of the organized bar, can help the Commission successfully complete its mission. Joint Workshop 5A – Setting Grant Priorities and Managing Community RelationshipsNorthern Hemisphere A4, 5th LevelWell-articulated criteria and a grant priority statement are central to the selection of charitable activities that match the bar foundation’s mission. Grant guidelines that specify clearly what a foundation can and cannot fund provide critical assistance to grant seekers and thus play a valuable role in managing community expectations. In addition to receiving more targeted requests, such information can also help decrease the number of proposals for programs that are not a good fit with your objectives. METROPOLITAN BAR CAUCUSthe Metropolitan Bar Caucus (MBC) is a sub-group of the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) that seeks to address the interests and the concerns of major metropolitan bar associations throughout the United states. Estab-lished in 1979 as the National Caucus of Metropolitan Bar Leaders, the organization became the Metropolitan Bar

Caucus in 1993. At annual and midyear meetings held in conjunction with the ABA and the NCBP, the MBC presents programs exploring a variety of topics including pro bono activities, diversity, membership, financial issues facing met-ropolitan bars, community involvement and recruitment of young lawyers to join and participate in metropolitan bars.

4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.ABA Legislative and Governmental Advocacy Update – Program and ReceptionNorthern Hemisphere A3, 5th LevelThe 111th Congress is debating many issues of vital concern to the legal profession and the justice system. The program will begin with ABA President Carolyn Lamm’s update on several hot-topic issues, including Legal Services Corporation reauthorization and funding, and ABA efforts to address the impact of the economic crisis on the legal profession, including student loan relief. Following the update, a panel of experts will discuss significant ways Congress and Federal agencies are attempting to regulate lawyers. The presentation, “Preventing Federal Intrusion into State Supreme Court Regulation of Lawyers,” focuses on pending federal legis-lation and what the ABA is doing to support maintaining the historic jurisdiction of the respective state supreme courts. Learn about these issues and what you, your bar association or your ABA entity can do to get involved.Produced by the ABA Office of Governmental Affairs and Cosponsored by the National Conference of Bar Presidents, National Association of Bar Executives, ABA Section Officers Conference, ABA Young Lawyers Divi-sion and the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants MODERATOR

Joint Workshop 5A – Setting Grant Priorities and Managing Community RelationshipsNorthern Hemisphere A4, 5th LevelWell-articulated criteria and a grant priority statement are central to the selection of charitable activities that match the bar foundation’s mission. Grant guidelines that specify clearly what a foundation can and cannot fund provide criti-cal assistance to grant seekers and thus play a valuable role in managing community expectations. In addition to receiv-ing more targeted requests, such information can also help decrease the number of proposals for programs that are not a good fit with your objectives. Join us for this discussion on developing a transparent grant-making process.PRESENTER
