Estimados amigos:Ya se ha levantando el telón . Delan-te de nuestros ojos tenemos un nue-vo Mutua Madrid Open. Ya son once años disfrutando juntos del que es el mejor tenis del mundo, lo que ha otor-gado a Madrid la categoría de refe-rente dentro de este deporte . La Caja Mágica será, una vez más, el epicen-tro tenístico del 4 al 13 de mayo . Y, para nosotros, es un orgullo daros a todos, independientemente de vues-tra nacionalidad, la bienvenida . Perte-necerá al mismo circuito que éstos, porque la pista no será de hierba ni rápida, será de tierra” .

To know how you get the blue clay, we must begin by explaining how to get the traditional red clay . This comes primarily from the crushing of se-lected bricks being sieving to a par-ticle size of 1 to 1 .5 mm . That tritu-rated brick is obtained in three steps: 1 . A base white clay is kneaded, ob-tained after removing the iron oxide .

Para ver cómo se fabrica la tierra azul, tenemos que empezar por expli-car cómo obtenemos la tierra batida tradicional roja . Ésta proviene bási-camente de la trituración del ladrillo seleccionado y tamizado a una granu-lometría de 1 a 1,5 mm . Ese ladrillo que se tritura se obtiene en tres pa-sos: 1 . Se amasa una base de arcilla blanca, que se obtiene tras extraer el óxido férrico de la misma . 2 . El bloque que se obtiene hay que cocerlo a una temperatura de en-tre 900 y 950 grados . 3 . El último paso es el de la tritu-ración, el molido y el tamizado de ese ladrillo que hemos obtenido con la granulometría adecuada .

Es importante tener en cuenta que no podríamos nunca tintar direc-tamente el polvo de ladrillo rojo, porque no adquiriríamos nunca el color azul, ya que la base de ladri-llo roja modificaría el color final . Por eso hay que retirar el óxido férrico .

The emergence of Agnieszka Radwanska, the comeback of veter-ans like the Williams sisters or Kim Clijsters and the determination of players like Caroline Wozniacki or Ana Ivanovic to regain their place among the best are an encourag-ing picture for the immediate future . A year ago Petra Kvitova and Victo-ria Azarenka reaffirmed themselves in the Mutua Madrid Open as ris-ing stars of the Women’s Tour . And only twelve months later they re-

El año pasa-do se vio superada en Madrid por el empuje de Petra Kvitova y desde esa final en La Caja Mágica la tra-yectoria de ambas ha seguido cami-nos paralelos. Las dos han logrado consagrarse en la élite y ganar un Grand Slam, aunque sólo una, la bielorrusa, ha conseguido ocupar de momento el número uno de la cla-sificación.

El espléndido inicio de 2012 de Aza-renka la llevó a ganar primero en Sidney y poco después el Open de Australia. El primer Grand Slam del año vivió una emoción que no se recordaba desde hacía años en el circuito de la WTA. La entonces número uno Caroline Wozniacki no

Parece que la gente tiene poca me-moria y ya no recuerda la polémica que hubo en su momento cuando los tenistas empezaron a dejar de vestir de blanco, o cuando las pelo-ta amarilla sustituyó a la blanca, o cuando se empezó a jugar con ra-queta metálica… Polémicas que, con el paso del tiempo, hoy nadie en-tiende . En mi idioma, y creo que en el suyo también, se dice que siem-pre hay una tormenta en un vaso de agua . ¡El ‘tie-break’! Hubo tenistas

que amenazaron con no volver a ju-gar nunca más si se implantaba . ¡La raqueta metálica! Pri-mero, porque son otras medidas y, segundo, porque en Estados Unidos, la meca del golf, no hay ni el diez por ciento de los jugadores, federados o no, que tiene el tenis .

¿La bola amarilla es la que se ve me-jor o piensa que en el futuro será sustituida por la bola de otro color?

Lo vamos a ver . Estoy trabajando en ello . Volver a la bola blanca, desde luego que no . Si no le pega él a la pelota como si fuera la última de su vida, le va a pe-gar Djokovic, que lo tiene enfrente . Y si no es Djokovic, será Federer . Hace once años, cuando empezaron ustedes a organizar el Madrid Mu-tua Open, ¿pensaban que llegaría a este nivel tan alto?

¿Cómo puede crecer más, en el plano deportivo, el Mutua Madrid Open?

Es una cuestión de educación tam-bién . Nuestra obligación es educar al público, no sólo al español, sino al de

todo el tenis, en el sentido de que la importancia de un evento así no tiene por qué estar relacionada con que haya o deje de haber un español en la final . Wimbledon no tiene un inglés en la final desde hace más de seten-ta años, pero es el torneo con mayor afluencia de público en todo el mun-do . Es un trabajo que hay que hacer con tiempo y creo que es el momento de empezar con esa labor educativa .

¿Aspira a que se convierta en el quinto torneo del Grand Slam?

Ni mucho menos ése es el objetivo . Considero que tiene más valor como está ahora, es decir, jugándose el torneo en ocho días con la presen-cia de los mejores 48 jugadores del mundo . Entiendo que es una apues-ta mucho más valiente . Eso sí, si yo pudiera decidir, haría un torneo con 32 jugadores en vez de 48 . Con una fase previa, si se quiere, pero con la presencia de los mejores 32, como sucede en el fútbol con la Champions League o con el Mundial, o como su-cede en la Fórmula 1 . Los mejores tienen que jugar siempre con los mejores .

From the 2011 edition, male and fe-male winners of the Mutua Madrid Open lift up the trophy Ion Tiriac, a wonderful piece in gold and dia-monds, which becomes a jewel for the winner . Anunció su retirada en noviembre de 2010, pero, a día de hoy, sigue jugando al tenis en el circuito de veteranos . ¿En qué ha cambiado su vida desde entonces?Cambia mucho . También se juntó a mi retirada que nació mi hija, con lo cual la reincorporación a la vida real fue más fácil . También tengo una academia en el norte de Ma-drid, que se llama Club Social San-to Domingo, formo parte del staff del Mutua Madrid Open, y todo eso hace que me mantenga ocupado y que siga ligado al tenis, que era lo que yo quería .

Ha entrado en ese circuito de vete-ranos por la puerta grande, ganando varios torneos y situándose prime-ro en el ranking, puesto que ocupa actualmente . ¿Esperaba algo así? Bueno, quizá yo era uno de los fa-voritos, porque soy el que se ha re-tirado hace menos tiempo, sigo es-tando en forma y me esperaba estar luchando por esas posiciones . Pero no me esperaba empezar jugando siete torneos y ganar seis . Estoy muy contento, sobre todo por el he-cho de competir de nuevo . Aunque sea a otro nivel aparte de los Grand Slam y del circuito profesional, en-frentarme a jugadores a los que me enfrenté hace diez años o a los que sólo había visto jugar por televisión es algo bastante excitante .

En el Mutua Madrid Open tiene un cargo importante como enla-ce de la organización con los ju-gadores . ¿Cómo lleva el hecho de trabajar desde los despachos? La verdad es que me gusta . Es una versión distinta de lo que es un tor-neo de tenis y se ve de otra manera . Es algo bonito . Los jugadores pue-den ver una cara reconocible que ha estado con ellos hace poco, con lo cual me tienen confianza, y yo veo un poco lo que son los entresijos de este torneo y lo duro que es orga-nizarlo .

But I did not expect to start playing seven tournaments and win-ning six . I am very happy, especially because I am competing again . Al-though at a different than at the Grand Slams and professional circuits, fac-ing players whom I faced against ten years ago or whom I had only seen them playing on TV is pretty exciting .

In Mutua Madrid Open you have an important position in the organiza-tion as a liaison with the players . How is for you working from the offices?

The truth is that I like that . It is a different version of what a tennis tournament is and you see from a different view . It’s nice . Players can see a familiar face that has been recently with them, so they have confidence in me, and I see somehow what are the secrets of this tournament and how hard it is to organize it .

What does your position at the Mu-tua Madrid Open exactly consist of?It is basically to be the bridge be-tween the players and the organi-zation . I try that everything is right for players . I also bring the player’s point of view to try to be a better tournament every year . Likewise I represent the tournament during the week meetings with the WTA and ATP .

How was it for you the first edition of the tournament as part of the or-ganization?It was a great experience . I had the opportunity to know what a tennis tournament is from a different per-spective and realize the enormous work involved in organizing a Mas-ters 1000 . When you are a player,

¿En qué consiste exactamente su puesto en el Mutua Madrid Open?Se trata básicamente de ser el puente entre los jugadores y la organización . Intento que esté todo bien para los jugadores . Aporto también el punto de vista del jugador para intentar ser cada año un torneo mejor . Igualmente, represento al torneo en las reuniones con la WTA y ATP que se van produ-ciendo durante la semana .

¿Cómo fue para usted la primera edición del torneo formando parte de la organización?Fue una grata experiencia . Tuve la oportunidad de conocer lo que es un torneo de tenis desde otra perspectiva y darme cuenta del enorme trabajo que supone montar un Masters 1000 . Cuando eres jugador, llegas al torneo, te entrenas, juegas y te vas en avión de nuevo al siguiente torneo… No te paras a pensar en todo el esfuerzo y trabajo que supone organizarlo .

Jugó el Mutua Madrid Open en varias ediciones y ahora forma parte de la organización . ¿En qué ha cambiado este torneo desde sus días como jugador?Yo jugué varias ediciones cuando el torneo se celebraba en el Madrid Arena, en pista cubierta, y era totalmente diferente . De jugar en pista cubierta a jugar en tierra cambia mucho, pero éste es un torneo en constante evolución, un torneo muy querido por los jugadores . En cuanto a los jugadores, aunque haya algunos reacios a cambiar la tradición de la pista roja, cuando jueguen ahí quizá lo vean un poco extraño en el tema visual, pero a la hora de resbalar y los botes de la pelota son exactamente iguales .

En lo que va de año, el tenis espa-ñol ha ganado ya más de diez tor-neos entre individuales y dobles . ¿Cuál es el secreto para que el tenis de nuestro país se manten-ga año tras año en lo más alto? Hay una enorme tradición tenística en España desde hace muchos años, con grandísimos jugadores que hace que los niños de hoy en día no quie-ran ser sólo futbolistas, sino tam-bién ser tenistas . Hay buenos entre-nadores, buenas academias, mucho tenis en televisión y, obviamente, un torneo como el Mutua Madrid Open, que atrae a los mejores jugadores del mundo, ayuda a que esa afición siga creciendo . Ésa es la clave .

Una de las jugadoras que ha ga-nado un torneo de la WTA este año es Lara Arruabarrena, con solo 19 años, y por detrás vienen jugado-res como Garbiñe Muguruza, Carlos Boluda o Paula Arias, que conquis-tó recientemente el Open Super 12 alevín de Auray . ¿Cómo ve el futuro del tenis español?Es bueno que sigan apareciendo relevos . Estamos un poco mal acos-tumbrados a tener jugadores que están ganando todas las semanas torneos, a tener un jugador con op-ciones de estar en el número uno . Eso tarde o temprano se acabará y lo echaremos de menos . Pero sí es bueno tener a jóvenes que empiezan a ganar torneos internacionales y que espero que puedan ser un re-levo real de los grandes jugadores que tenemos hoy en día .

Del 4 al 13 de mayo, la principal calle comercial de Madrid no es Serrano, ni la Gran Vía… es la Avenida Mutua Madrid Open . Más de setenta bouti-ques se concentran en La Caja Mágica durante el torneo tenístico que tiene lugar en La Caja Mágica . En el Nivel -2, a la salida de la Pista central Ma-nolo Santana, se sitúan 45 boutiques, además de otras cuatro boutiques VIPS (Chivas 18, Marqués de Murrie-ta, Caviar World y Laurent Perrier) . Por otro lado, en el Nivel 0 están en-clavadas ocho boutiques de los patro-cinadores oficiales del Mutua Madrid Open, así como catorce stands rela-cionados todos ellos con el mundo del tenis . En definitiva, un paraíso para los aficionados a las compras y para quienes, entre las emociones de parti-do y partido, disponen de la ocasión de llevarse a casa algo relacionado con uno de los más importantes torneos tenísticos del mundo .

660 VOLUNTARIOSDE MEDIO MUNDO

El Mutua Madrid Open recibió un total de 1 .087 inscripciones para cubrir los 660 puestos de volunta-rios durante el torneo . Los selec-cionados hubieron de participar en unos cursos de formación para con-firmar su presencia .

Del total de 660 puestos, un 50% de voluntarios ya había estado anterior-mente en el torneo . La edad media es de 34 años, mientras que hay un 61% de mujeres frente al 39% de hombres .

De entre todos los voluntarios selec-cionados, hay gente de lugares tan dispares como México, China, Italia o Nueva Zelanda . En total hay siete voluntarios chinos, cuatro alemanes, dos italianos, dos ingleses, un fran-cés, un mexicano y una voluntaria procedente de Nueva Zelanda .

Mutua de Madrid Open quiere que su web sea el sitio de visita inexcu-sable para todos aquellos que inten-tan saber lo que pasa no sólo en el torneo, sino también en el mundo del tenis . Y argumentos para que esa máxima se cumpla no faltan en la web: los aficionados pueden encon-trar noticias, reportajes, entrevis-tas, vídeos, fotos, resultados, etc . Es decir, un mundo virtual dedicado al deporte que amamos .

Por otro lado, la página del Mutua Madrid Open en Facebook supera ampliamente ya los 20 .000 segui-dores, lo que convierte al torneo en uno de los eventos con mayor pre-sencia en la red social .
