Ice Box Invitational Handball Doubles January 29-30, 2010

St. Anthony AC, Minneapolis Once again the weather fit the namesake for the 16th annual Ice Box Doubles Invitational as the outside temperatures dipped below zero adding a little slickness to the walls. As is also typical of this event nearly every match was highly contested with twelve of the 30 matches decided by tie-breakers. Everyone enjoyed the closed circuit TV action, the usual non-stop great hospitality enhanced by the unique atmosphere of the St. Anthony AC.

The Open division featured the winning teams from each of the last three years. But none of these very good teams was able to gain the championship. An “up-start” team of Tim Labey and Steve Johnson took top honors winning tie-breakers in the quarters and the semis before winning in two in the finals. The semifinal match against last year’s defending champs Andy and John Nett

was a thriller with an 11-9 finish as Tim went on one of his typical serve and shoot runs. Meanwhile Pete Crouser and Ryan Maloney (2008 champs) had a heated match with 2007 winners Tom Bowman and Jeff Ryan going to an 11-5 tie-breaker. Great handball all around!!! Mike Wells and Mike Gustafson repeated as consolation champs – something they did not cherish but walked away with $20 for the effort.

The dynasty continues in the A division. Emil Weiler and John Miller squeaked out an 11-10 win in the finals over Brett Broxey and Hank Ulrich for a repeat title. Unlike last year, Emil and John pretty much cruised to the finals after a bumpy first game against Brandon Glaze and Mitch Van Eps. Ulrich and Broxey had a barn-burner in the semis against Steve Tamminga and Brian Coonce but Brett’s steady play and Hank’s kill shots from the short line made the difference. The consolation finals match prvided the most controversy of the entire tournament. In an all committee match between Sheldon Silberman and Larry Larson against Brian Mahaffy and Clancy Mylan, Mahaffy and Mylan won a convincing first game over a lackluster looking Larson and Silberman. In the second game it looked like an easy two game win until Larson started serving some incredible hops and Silberman found a kill shot with his off-hand. Somewhere around 15-18, referee Emil Weiler lost track of the score and two points might have been added or dropped from Silberman and Larson. Between the gallery and the players it took several minutes to decide on the score. Of course it went to a tie-breaker and Larson served to an 8-0 lead once he got in. But Mylan served some aces and got back in the game to 7-9 before Silberman forced a couple misses with hard drives for the 11-7 win.

There was controversy from the start as the committee allowed Rich Ryan and Mike McQuillan into the B division. But Jesse Fleck and John Laliberte proved the committee correct when they defeated these stalwarts 11-8 in a great tie-breaker. Unfortunately, the up-starts did not have enough to defeat the eventual champions Billy Craig and Brent Friedrichs in the semis. Ed Simonet and last-minute fill-in Joe Taylor defeated last year’s champs Rick Jaede and Eric Johnson in a very competitive semifinal match to gain the finals round. It was another barn-burner where only a single point separted the two teams after two games. The 11-3 tie-breaker went to the youngsters with the fresher legs. Thanks to the St. Anthony AC and the tournament committee of Sheldon Silberman, Emil Weiler, Clancy Mylan, Brian Mahaffy, Eric Johnson, Steve

Sportsmanship By Matt Johnson, MSHA Youth Director

One of the greatest joys in handball is the camaraderie that almost universally exists among its players no matter their age, skill level or personality type. Seeing two players battle like the fiercest of adversaries for over an hour only to share war stories over beers a half hour later is truly unique to our game. The post match conduct of players in our game is something to be proud of and something that we all preach to newcomers to the game and even our own children. Yet somehow, in spite of the tremendous moral compass that governs the majority of our players, some player’s conduct during their match is often not befitting of the men and women that they are. Specifically, excessive profanity, punching and kicking court walls and poor treatment of officials have become all too common in handball events. The question of on court conduct is not one of morality, religious or political beliefs – it is one of courtesy. It is undeniable that something about being inside a twenty by forty concrete bunker and playing what can be the most frustrating game on the planet will make even the most mild mannered person lose their cool. However, out of courtesy for your opponent, spectators and junior players who are watching these matches and making notes on the behavior they see, it is important that all players behave with respect for the game. No one likes to play with someone who shouts an obscenity or punches a wall after each missed shot. Similarly no one likes to officiate someone who is constantly out of the court contesting every close call like John McEnroe at the U.S. Open. Remember, for most players a handball tournament is nothing more than recreation. In almost every bracket there are a small number of players who have a chance to win yet the others choose to spend $40 to $60 to have an enjoyably weekend of handball. Playing with or reffing someone who forgets about sportsmanship is an easy way to ruin that weekend. Finally, if the above is not persuasive enough for you, the USHA Rule Book sets the standard that should be followed for sportsmanship.

Rule 4.9: A technical foul is assessed for unsportsmanlike conduct… If a referee issues a technical, one point shall be deducted from the offender’s score… Three technicals in a match will result in a forfeiture… Some examples of actions that may result in technicals are: 1) Too frequent complaints against an officials judgment. 2) Profanity. 3) Excessive arguing. 4) Excessive or hard striking (of court walls) or a ball between rallies.

It is important that all officials enforce rule 4.9 with increased vigilance to attempt to curb some of the unsportsmanlike actions that continue to appear in our great game. In any MSHA event, the tournament director reserves the right to enforce the penalty in Rule 4.9 if the match official fails to. If you have any questions about what constitutes any of the above scenarios, please consult the tournament desk prior to the beginning of your match. If we all work together both on our own behavior and on enforcement of Rule 4.9 we can ensure that handball remains the enjoyable, sportsmanly game that we all love.

Minnesota State Handball Championships

Masters Doubles Handball Central Courts, Columbia Heights,

MN March 5-6, 2010

A small but dedicated group met to contest the Seniors (30+), Masters (40+), Super Masters (60+) and Diamond Masters (70+) Minnesota State Handball Doubles titles. The Masters division was organized into an A/B drop-down arrangement to accommodate the wide variety in capabilities of the players and still create competitive matches. Everyone had a great time and we all saw some very good matches at the end of the tournament.

Only three teams entered the Seniors (30+) division. Each team included at least one golden master eligible player and one included a super master eligible player. Andy Nett, in his first year of eligibility took another title with his father John. Sheldon Silberman and Larry Larson squeaked out a second place victory over George Langhorst and Alan Leveille.

Tim Labey and Steve Johnson continued their early domination in doubles in 2010 with convincing wins over Lee Anderson and Glen Solin and then Mike Wells and John Stoffel before a very entertaining and tough win against Paul Dorland and Andy Hoisington in the Masters A. Wells and Stoffel proved too much for Emil Weiler and Brett Broxey in the third place match.

Losers in the first rounds of the Masters A division dropped into the Masters B division where golden master eligible Phil Kleineschay and Mike Kloos dominated everyone. Brian Mahaffy and Brian Coonce took second and iron man Tom Bordenave and Tim Zigmund defeated Lee Anderson and Glen Solin for third place.

Rich Ryan and Greg Taylor attempted to defend their streak in the Super Masters but Gary Rohrer (with two new hips) and second iron man John Nett easily dispatched them in the finals. Paul Nelson and Jack Leveille took third place honors defeating John Stout and Jim Stephenson. Tom Bordenave, playing in both the Maters and Super Masters divisions took consolation with partner Ed Simonet in a very competitive match over Bill Brown and Chris Foley.

It’s great to see the real masters – the Diamond Masters (70+) gentlemen still fight it out for top honors in the state. Don Krocak and Arnie Wells never let their opponents get into double figures. Skip Kiland and Ted Bergstrom took second. The Central Courts once again provided a perfect venue for the Championships, Masters (40+) A Doubles Quarter Finals • Paul Dorland (Mankato)/Andy

Open Doubles Handball University of Minnesota

Recreational Sports Center, Minneapolis, MN

March 26-27, 2010 Some mighty fine handball was played at the 2010 Open Doubles championship at the university of Minnesota Rec. Center the weekend of March 26-27. A dozen teams squared off in the Open Division. Last years winners, Steve Christoff and Matt Hiber did not return as a team to defend their title. Instead,

Matt team up with Ray Miller to draw the #1 seed. The team looked destined to take the title with relatively straight forward wins including a 21-11, 21-13 semifinal over Ryan Maloney and Mike Gustafson.

However, last years third place team of Andy Nett and John Nett worked their way to the finals defeating a strong Mike Wells/ John Stoffel team and then Steve Johnson and Tim Labey, both in two contested games. Hiber and Miller looked strong taking the first game at 12 with accurate serves and great driving v-passes until they got the kill opportunity. Andy did a great job digging the kills but the left side serves gave him trouble. The Netts regrouped for the second game and Andy showed his conditioning and youthfulness. There is a new drive and competitiveness in Andy and it carried them to a 19 point win to set up the tie-breaker. The Netts got a quick lead and looked like they would run away with the game but Hiber and Miller worked their way back into only to fall short at 6. Minnesota crowned a new (Andy) and a very seasoned (John) championship doubles team. Maloney and Gustafson claimed third over a defeated Tim Labey and Steve Johnson.

Losers in the Open on Friday played off for the A division title. Mike Wells and John Stoffel claimed the win over Jeff Ryan and Matt Dobbins in an exciting 13-21, 21-6, 11-7 battle. The third place match was equally entertaining as Tim Kappes and Brian Burke defeated Pete Crouser and Brian Coonce 15-21, 21-11, 11-8.

Jesse Fleck and Dane Swanson surprised a couple of teams in the B Division to advance to the finals from their fifth seed. The young pair defeated the young and the old in matches against Ed Simonet and Ed Brazman and then Mark and Clancy Mylan. Equally tough were Billy Craig and Matt Callanan, products of the Mankato State Handball program, defeating a very tough team of Matt Johnson (not from the U of M) and Danny Kieffer in their seminfinal match. The final looked to be a show-down. Craig and Callanan learned from their semifinal match and kept the pressure on to win the title in two games. Johnson and Kieffer took third in a great match against the Mylans with a come-back 16-21, 21-15, 11-5 win. John Laliberte and Gabriel Lopez took consolation honors over Simonet and Brazman.

It looked like the year for the lefty’s John Miller and Brett Broxey as they defeated Don Reiter and Bill Hickey with strong showing in the Golden Masters (50+) A Division semifinals. Meanwhile, perennial champion Paul Dorland and his new partner Mike Kloos struggled in their semifinal against Phil Kleineschay and Tim Fichtel going to a tie-breaker. Miller and Broxey looked strong winning the first game of the final at 16 and looked poised for the win serving at 20 in the second game. The 21st point just wouldn’t come so it came down to a tie-breaker. By that time, Dorland and Kloos had worked out their teamwork – let Paul take everything! It was over at 11-3. Reiter and Hickey took third place in an entertaining match against Kleineschay and Fichtel but it looked like the tough semi took a little too

much away for a second tough match on Saturday. John Nakasone and Mike Black defeated a recovering Gary Rohrer (two hip replacements) and a rusty looking Brad Baker for consolation honors.

Larry Larson took a few hours off of preparing tax returns to play a couple of tie-breakers on his way to a second place finish with Brian Mahaffy in the Golden Masters (50+) B Division. However, Tom Bordenave and Tim Zigmund outlasted Larson and Mahaffy to take the crown in an 11-3 finish. Mike Erdmanczyk and Don Weinberger took third.

It was a great showing of university students in the Novice Division where 13 year-olds Devin Ries and National Champion Tyler Stoffel beat all the first-year university students to take the title. It was the first adventure in doubles for most of the university students as they have concentrated on mostly fundamentals and singles in classes. They had a blast as they gained valuable teamwork knowledge as they played through the tournament. Instructor Jim Carlson couldn’t have been more proud if they had been his own kids! Nick Balcos and Nick Olson took second and Returning student Kristi Knudson and Wes Bussler took third place over Allan Bates and Max Stahler. Andy Bucket and Daniel Van Aartsen defeated Ryan Weber and Phil Young for the consolation title. Kate Cowger and Alisha Santorjiian took the top honors in the Womens Novice Doubles. Kudos to the U of M and the MSHA for all the hospitality and a well-run tournament.

2010 Spring Classic and State Open Singles

University of Minnesota Rec Center, Minneapolis, MN

April 16-18, 2010 It was a beautiful weekend for … golf with unusually sunny and warm weather for the middle of April. Still, over 100 handball players came in from the outdoors to compete for the top singles spots in a dozen different divisions. The tournament committee did a great job keeping the courts full and 150+ matches moving along all weekend. The traditional great Minnesota hospitality kept the players and spectators well fed for the entire weekend.

In the Open Division everyone was

pulling for a Matt Hiber - Andy Nett final and they were not disappointed. Hiber wound through the early rounds never giving up more than 10 points while the younger Nett worked much harder even going to a 11-9 tie-breaker against Pete Couser in the semifinal match. Andy came in strong but could not out-serve Hiber in the first game losing at 13. Andy refocused and attempted to step up his serve and shoot strategy. It did not look good as Matt served at 20-19. But Andy was able to dig out the serve and eventually end the rally in his favor, finally getting to 20-20 setting up an ace serve to force a tie-breaker. The tie-breaker was just as exciting as both Matt and Andy thrilled the crowd with first-class, pro-level handball. Matt gained the tenth point with Andy stuck at 6. Nett was able to dig out Hiber’s serves and force three side-outs while he advanced to 8. The fourth time at 20 was the charm as Matt finished the match at 11-8 taking his third straight title and tenth overall. Ryan Maloney showed surprising dominance over Pete Crouser in the third place match and Mike Wells defeated his regular match opponent John Stoffel 21-17, 21-11 in the consolation finals.

Tom Nett proved he is ready for the open division defeating several tough opponents in the A Singles to take the 2010 title. It looks there is another Nett on the open horizon. Erik Seiberlich defeated Michael Burke for the third place honors.

Mankato State alum Billy Craig demonstrated superior skill and training defeating U of Minnesota alum Jesse Fleck in the B Division in a tough two-game final, mirroring the Collegiate Cup results from the Fall Classic. Brandon Glaze narrowly defeated Matt Callanan for third place and John Laliberte demonstrated that a few more years of experience pay off in gaining the consolation honors over Matt Johnson.

National 13 year-old champion Tyler Stoffel showed skill and experience beyond his age in defeating the field in the C Division. Watch out for this youngster as he develops into what looks to be a championship caliber handball player. No one scored over 8 points against the champ until the finals. Michael Miller worked a little harder getting to the finals but was never seriously threatened. The highly anticipated final was very entertaining as the more physically mature Miller hit the ball harder but the tireless Stoffel chased everything down and made incredible gets and shots making nearly every rally an adventure. Stoffel lost the first game at 17 but rebounded with more defensive play and pin-point choices taking the second game at 13. The tie-breaker was an all-out battle finally won by the champ at 7. Ben Olson lost a little focus after a relatively easy first game in the third place match against Chris Drucker. Olson regained the momentum taking the the tie-breaker 11-1. Both Wes Bussler and Boonma Vang played four matches just to get to the consolation finals. The last match of the tournament to finish went to a great 11-10 finish in favor of Bussler. Both men were just excited to be there as the crowd cheered on the final contestants – a lifetime memory!

David Miller crushed the field in the Juniors round-robin, defeating every opponent. Coming close was 13 year-old second place finisher Devin Ries who took Miller to 21-14, 21-20 in defeat. Adrian Anderson took third. Another great crop of handball players to watch out for.

The seeding committee got right with #1 seed Brett Broxey pitted against #2 seed Phil Kleineschay in the Golden Masters (50+) A Division. Phil had a tough 3-game match against Hank Ulrich in the semis which may have played a part as Brett looked stronger in the end of their own three-game final defeating Phil in an 11-2 tie-breaker. Hank turned it around defeating Mike McGraw for third place in two very tough games.

2010 Minnesota State Handball Hall of Fame inductee Sheldon Silberman successfully defended his 2009 2nd place finish in the Golden Master (50+) B Division. George Langhorst looked to be in trouble from the start as Silberman rattled off the first dozen points in the first game. Langhorst re-focused and Silberman seemed to let up but the deficit was too great. The second game was a little different as Langhorst developed a commanding lead.

Silberman whittled the lead away but it was too little too late. Silberman once again got the jump early in the tie-breaker but seemed to run out of shots as Langhorst cruised to the title. Mark McQuillan took 3rd place over John Kunesh in another tie-breaker finish and Andy Staab defeated Mick Dobbins for consolation honors.

John Miller got a break in the semis when Greg Taylor pulled up lame with a hamstring injury. The extra rest paid off as Miller defeated John Nett for the Super Masters (60+) title. The Nett family did OK for the weekend with two seconds and championship – not what they had hoped for, but an incredible family showing! Bill Ingram took third place by default as Taylor was unable to continue play. Tom Bordenave, new the Supers this year, took consolation honors over Bill Brown in yet another tie-breaker final.

Another newby to an older age bracket, Don Krocak won in an entertaining, all-out battle against Jim Noren for the Diamond Masters (70+) championship. It is hard to believe two 70 year-olds can run around like that, let alone hit a handball – what a game! Ron Causton defeated Ted Bergstrom for third place and Skip Kiland bettered Bill Gimble for consolation.

Leah Betcher etched her name in the history books defeating all others in the Womens round-robin. Only one player got to 15 points against Leah. Kara Smith took second and Rebbeca Cole placed third.

In the Novice Womens Division, Alisha Santoorjian took top honors over fellow U of Minnesota student Kate Cowger 21-16, 21-13. Sveta Gitelzon defeated Jessi Knudson in a tie-breaker for 3rd place and Alex McDowell took consolation honors.

Twenty players competed in the Novice Division. Bob Quinn parlayed his #1 seed into a championship winning tie-breakers in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, each one closer then the previous match. Ben Olson looked to take an easier path but could not defeat Quinn in a great 11-8 final game finish. Nico Balcos took 3rd place. In an interesting twist of fate, Brian Rue and Mikael Reiller played

a preliminary match and met again in the consolation finals. After loosing in two in their first match, Reiller demonstrated he can learn on the run by taking Rue to a tough 11-6 tie-breaker in the final match. Reiller played 6 matches and Rue played five! This was a great showing of youth in the state of Minnesota handball. Thanks to all the collegiate help, the parents and the instructors for raising the level of play and interest in handball. Thanks to all of the MSHA participants for representing us well! 3-Wall Court Situation (?) Mitch Lallier arranged a meeting in July with St Paul Councilman – Dan Bostrom – to garner additional support for new 3-wall courts in a St Paul park to be determined. Curt Schlenner is also working with a contact in the Parks & Recreation Department on the same issue. Contact Curt for more current information. Sportsmanship Focus We want to emphasize sportsmanship for the upcoming handball season. Sportsmanship is really all about respecting –

- Your opponent - The referee - The spectators - The facility we are using

Respecting your opponent means calling your own double-bounces, court hinders, etc. and not creating avoidable hinders. Respecting the referee means accepting their call, though respectful disagreement is sometimes required. It is also important to teach a novice ref about the finer points of calling the game, as well as reminding them that they can call on the tournament directors for support on tough issues. Respecting the spectators means not cursing, regardless of the level of your play on a particular day. Respecting the facility means not kicking or slamming the door, as well as cleaning-up after ourselves to leave a positive impression on the facility staff. 2010 MSHA Tournaments Following is a list of the tentative dates & locations for the 2010 MSHA Tournaments

June 18-19, 2010 The first of many handball events at Life Time Fitness Centers in the Twin Cities was held June 18th and 19th. Some players drove over 300 miles to compete in this summer tournament held at the beautiful Life Time Fitness in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Saturday morning featured an exhibition match between Matt Hiber, the Minnesota State handball champion and Isiah Jones, the North Dakota State Champ. There were some very exciting volleys, serves, kills and great gets; but in the end, Matt Hiber had a convincing victory winning 21-8, 21-7. The B division showcased four top protégés from the University of Minnesota handball program. Jesse Fleck and Dane Swanson of Minneapolis took the title by defeating the father and son team of Steve and John Laliberte of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The Laliberte’s won the first game 21-11 but Fleck/Swanson fought back to take the second game 21-15. The tiebreaker was up for grabs but in the end, Fleck/Swanson earned the title with an 11-8 victory. Upcoming Minnesota female handball star, Emily Rund teamed up with the “speedy” Chris Drucker to take 3rd place in the B division. There were several exciting matches in the Golden Masters division. In the end, number one seed Don Reiter of Stillwater, Minnesota and Dan Passolt, of Fargo, North Dakota proved to be

too tough. In the semi-finals, Reiter/Passolt defeated John Nakasone of St. Paul, Minnesota and Mike “Quick Draw” McGraw of Eden Prairie, Minnesota 21-14, 21-17. Reiter/Passolt went on to defeat Brett Broxey (Brooklyn Park, MN) and Bob McCartney, (Robbinsdale, MN) 21-13, 21 6 for the Championships. The Consolation finals was a barn burner too as Phil Kleineschay (Maple Grove, MN) and Tim Fichtel (Mendota, MN) knocked off Chris Foley (Dellwood, MN) and Bill Brown (Shoreview, MN) in a close 11-8 tiebreaker. The Open finals was a match-up of youth vs. experience. Isiah Jones teamed up with Sean Cooley (Grand Forks, ND) and came up short in hard fought battle against Tim Labey (Roseville, MN) and Steve Johnson (White Bear Lake, MN). Labey and Johnson won the first game 21-11 and seemed to be in control. However, Jones and Cooley changed their strategy and switched sides in the second game and jumped to a 17-7 lead. Labey and Johnson couldn’t keep the pace with the hard-hitting youth so they decided to change up their serves and rely on soft lobs down the left side. Their strategy prevailed as they came back and won the second game 21-17. Nick Brown (Hugo, MN) and Donovan Foley (New Brighton, MN) took third and almost knocked off Labey and Johnson in the semi-finals. Brown and Foley were serving 9-2 in the tiebreaker when they were sided out for the last time. Labey got into his groove and started serving like he did twenty five years ago when he competed on the USHA Pro-Tour and ran nine straight unanswered points. Special thanks to co-tournament director and pro racquetball instructor, John Wilinski for all his help throughout the tournament and his desire to grow handball at Life Time Fitness. Our next Life Time handball event will be a singles tournament August 13th and 14th , at the Moore Lake (Fridley, MN) Life Time Fitness.
