Mission Statement

My mission as a Kindergarten teacher is to establish a developmentally appropriate learning environment that will empower all my students to discover the fundamentals of reading, writing, and math. I will strive to foster in my students a love of learning and an interest in their community. I look forward to accomplishing this goal by promoting a safe, secure, flexible, and welcoming environment that will address the entire individual learning intelligences. I will give all students the opportunity to create their own path that will lead them towards self-fulfilling success in life.

Learning Community

Several of my students enjoying the Cider Festival.

This annual festival is done with the students in our high school vocational center.

Proposition 1 Accomplished teachers are committed to students and their

learning.

Rationale:

Artifacts:

Reflection:

One of the standards that we must reach in Kindergarten to to teach science. I love this subject area especially when we do living and non-living in Kindergarten. To see the students excited to learn the differences through hands-on experience is so exciting as a teacher.

Living and Non- Living Unit(attached)

For the first trimester in my Kindergarten classroom we teach the concept of Living and Non-Living. This is implemented through our classroom pet. The students are responsible through one of our

classroom jobs to be the veterinarian. . They have to feed the crabs on a daily basis. This is one part of theLiving section for the standard. One of the activities that we do to reinforce the difference between living

and non-living is through classification of different items.

Proposition 2 Accomplished teachers know the subjects they teach and to teach those

subjects.

Rationale: I decided to choose this artifact that would attest to my knowledge and my ability to work with Kindergarten students. The best way to recognize if a teacher is a knowledgeable teacher is to observe their abilities to teach in front of an audience. In order to accomplish this proposition I have included a short video clip from a teaching lesson with a student that have made tremendous gains since the beginning of the school year.

Artifacts: Teaching certificate and endorsement and student activity. Video clip of students growth.

Reflection: As a kindergarten teacher, I need to have a broader baseline knowledge of all subject areas in order to teach each subject area. Being able to teach all students at their individual ability level is critical in Kindergarten.

This activity really depicts the true meaning of a developmentally appropriate teacher. Showing that students should have differentiated instruction for all students.

Proposition 3 Accomplished teachers are responsible for managing and

monitoring student learning.

Rationale: Part of my role as a teacher is to teach my students social and self-help skills especially in the early stages of Kindergarten. At the beginning of the school year we establish a social story that depicts our daily routine. Once the students have been in school for roughly a week, we establish classroom rules and everyone signs the large classroom chart.

Artifacts: “Classroom Rules Chart” and “Keeping the Green” behavioral chart.

Reflection: Once a majority of the students have become a custom to our classroom room we establish classroom rules. These rules are brainstorms by all of the students in our room. This chart makes the students aware and involved in the process of becoming good school citizens.

The “Keeping the Green” chart enables me to monitor with the parents on a daily basis how their child has behaved. Students are rewarded at the end of the week for keeping the green. This has been a great behavioral modification in my classroom for all students. Because they are all treated equally.

Proposition 4

Accomplished teachers think systemically about their practices and learn from experience.

Rationale: I chose an example of a Kindergarten assessment that is implemented three times a year for assessing students letter knowledge and letter sounds ability. This assessment is given to all kindergarten students before the report card are sent home to parents. I deeply believe that this assessment is valid & reliable and is designed to follow the State of Maine learning Standards. The prep work is minimal as a teacher as long as one has photocopied the scoring sheet and the alphabet chart for students to read from.

Artifact: Letter Identification and Letter Sound Assessment (attached)

Reflection: I enjoy seeing the growth of the students from trimester to trimester. This assessment is important for detecting students that do not demonstrate growth with their letter knowledge skills. For these students that are not making growth, I immediately refer them to the Student Assistants Team. For the students that make growth from each trimester this validates that I have accomplished one of the major teaching standards as a teacher.

Proposition 5 Accomplished teachers are members of learning communities.

Rationale: The artifacts that used for this proposition includes my involvement with learning about weather at Mountain Washington Observatory. Mount Washington provided professional training for teachers that were involved in teach elementary school students about the importance of weather in New England. Additional artifacts that I have been involved with is the SAT/RTI Team at Songo Locks Elementary School. This group meets on a weekly basis to discuss and implement with the classroom teacher and parents an action plan to support the student in both academic and behavioral skills. My professional development ranges from attending conferences, teaching skills to other professionals in at my grade level and being involved with graduate courses at the University of New England.

Artifacts: Two pictures documenting a week long visit to Mount Washington with fellow colleagues from SAD #61. The picture to the left is extremely exciting because we actually climbed to the top of the tower, which is not open to the general public.

Reflection: Being involve with professional learning communities is particularly important to ensure that I grow professionally. I feel that it is important to collaborate with fellow teachers, community members, parents and presenters at conferences or through college courses. Through the University of New England, I have found it extremely important and beneficial to collaborate in order to reach my highest potential. In the future, I look forward to continuing a path of self-discovery and professional growth.

Objective: To continue working in a collaborative environment at the Kindergarten through Third grade level.

Qualities and Strengths: Creative, Intuitive, Dedicated, Resourceful, Flexible, Organized, and a Team Player.

My Reflection and My Reflection and Future EndeavorsFuture Endeavors

“Throughout our lives we all have chosen different paths. These paths take us to different places, to different things and to different people.

Having the opportunity to experience the masters program through UNE and reflect on my educational experiences has allowed me to walk up a path that has led to enormous professional growth. I am now only at the top of this sandy path ready to go forth and engage in my future endeavors.

I would love to know what exactly was on the other side of my path, but then again it is like education where it is unknown territory. I look forward to involving all students in my life an opportunity to create their own path that will led them towards a self-fulfilling success.”

My Reflection on the University of New England

Experience Over the past four years, I have been involved in the University of New England’s masters in education program. Throughout this journey I have discovered the importance of becoming a lifelong learner. This experience has shown me a true love for the spirit of sharing, giving, and caring for the teaching profession and the students that I have influenced. By becoming a lifelong learner through the course work at UNE, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the importance of the educational system from the preschool level up to to the masters level. This journey has been a remarkable experience by working independently, collaborating with fellow teachers, to collaborating with professors on my valuable coursework that can immediately be implemented in my teaching profession.
