PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE June 24 is almost here, the date of the Maryland Primary Election. In fact, early voting runs from June 12 – June 19. This year we will be nominating and electing a new Governor, members of the State House of Delegates, State Senate, a County Executive, members of the County Council and the Board of Education.
The results of this election will have significant effects on us, our families and all the residents of our state and county. Unfortunately, many citizens are not fully aware of many of the candidates and their positions. In fact, most voters don't get to know candidates for local and state legislative office and, therefore, our effort is not to tell members how to vote, but to inform members about those we have interviewed and we are recommending, i.e. candidates that your colleagues think will be good public officials. I know I am frequently asked by neighbors “Who is running for the Board of Education and whom should I vote for?” They know that, as a retired MCPS employee, I might have more insight into some of these races and the impact of planks in the candidate’s platforms. Therefore, our being “informed voters” can have a multiplier effect on the election. Thanks to the hard work of our Political Action Committee, chaired by LeeAnn Kaye, you and I are in a better position to respond to these neighbors with insights into the candidates’ positions as it effects public education, school system employees and retirees. Through many hours of hard work, including written questionnaires, interviews and deliberation, this committee has created a list of the MCPSRA Recommended Candidates for County Executive, County Council, State Legislature (House and Senate) and Board of Education. Please consider it carefully so you can be an informed voter and an advocate for the issues identified as important to retirees and education. (Continued on p.2) VOTING RECOMMENDATIONS The Association’s Political Action Committee is recommending to MCPSRA members to vote for the following candidates in the Primary Election, Tuesday, June 24, 2014. June 19, 2014 PRESIDENT’S LETTER cont.
I found it interesting, both during the candidate interview process and in talking with elected officials, that many candidates, including incumbents, are not fully aware of some of our issues or the details surrounding them. For example, we had to educate many candidates to understand that retiree health care benefits are NOT paid for by the State Pension System but are a local Board of Education/County Council program. Most did NOT know that retirees have no contractual agreement with the school board and no bargaining power through the school system’s unions over health care or other non-pension retirement benefits. While most adamantly stated that “a promise once made must be kept” few understood that there was no force of law to guarantee that promise. In fact, the opportunity to interview candidates proved to be a great opportunity to help educate many of them about “our issues”. MCPSRA is NOT a political body, but we do believe we owe it to our members (and their neighbors) to find out how candidates for public office feel about issues near and dear to us and to let others know what we discovered. I therefore highly recommend you consider the list of recommended candidates and VOTE. Turnout for the primary is predicted to be “light”, as school will be out of session and summer vacations will have started. Let’s show the pollsters that we, MCPS Retirees, are committed to the democratic process and defy these predictions by VOTING in both the Primary Election (June 24) and General Election (November 4) so our voices are heard loudly and clearly on the issues that affect us!

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER With the arrival of spring and summer , the abundance of warm, sunny weather brings new life and beauty to the world around us. We are surrounded by a profusion of color in the flowers and trees in our yards and neighborhoods. Even the clothes we wear are brighter and more cheerful than those we stored away at winter's end. We are all so happy that the dreadful winter with its heavier than usual snowfalls is long gone. " But wait a minute !" some people may say. "Speak for yourself! I LOVE the snow! I am an avid skier! It's been far too many years since we had as wonderful a snow season as we did this year! There's nothing more beautiful than freshly fallen snow on a ski slope!" Snow IS beautiful as it glistens in bright moonlight. BUT, if you were the one that had to shovel out your driveway time and time again, well, somehow you may not have seen the beauty in the snow! How do we usually define beauty? Do we necessarily need to see it with our own eyes to be able to describe it? Have you ever heard someone say, "She is a truly beautiful person inside and out." What is it about certain individuals that leads people to describe them in such an endearing way? Obviously, it is much more than what we "see" -- it has more to do with what our hearts feel. Selfless, caring, compassionate, giving, genuine, gracious, helpful, and encouraging people are truly beautiful gifts to everyone around them. Such individuals radiate beauty. "She has the most beautiful smile. She just makes me happy!" Do you know someone like that? A beautiful smile is contagious and can lift our spirits when we're feeling down. This is particularly true of children. It is nearly impossible not to be infected by the smiles and laughter of happy children. They, too, need lots of smiles sent their way to assure them that they are special, valued, and loved. Every child is beautiful. Our Special Projects Committee is asking you to open your hearts and let your inner beauty shine for needy little kindergartners this summer who will know just how wonderful you are when they receive the toolkits of school supplies that you purchased just for them. Everyone should experience seeing the joy and delight on their faces when the children first open their kits. It is a memory to cherish for life and makes all the hard work put into the project worthwhile. We are at a critical point if we are to continue the project this year and in the future. Our fundraising efforts have fallen considerably shorter than we had hoped. To date 165 donations have been received for around $11,500 but our expenditures last year totaled nearly $24,000. We will not be assembling backpacks for the homeless children in the Title I Extended Learning Opportunities Summer Adventures in Learning Program this summer for two reasons. First, this summer's program is being offered to only K through Grade 2 students, not K through Grade 5. The majority of the backpacks in the past went to children in grades 3 through 5. Secondly, Dr. Starr, Superintendent of MCPS, initiated a yearly project to provide backpacks to all needy child in Montgomery County. Therefore, that component of our own project is no long necessary. The dilemma for our association is whether or not we can purchase new books for one or two grade levels of students attending ELO SAIL this summer as we have done for several years now. We need to make that decision very soon but in order to do so we must raise an additional $8,000 or more in a very short period of time. The money collected thus far this year will not even cover the cost of the toolkits. PLEASE help our Toolkits and Books Project stay alive by sending in a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE contribution as soon as possible. There is a beautiful child out there waiting to smile just for you because you cared. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _

August 21, 2014 8:00 am Depart Georgia Avenue Park and Ride 10:30 am Arrive Museums Enjoy Museums and lunch on own 3:30 pm Depart for home 6:00 pm Arrive back at Park and Ride
Philadelphia is a treasure trove of world class art. Join us on a day trip to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum, and the Barnes Foundation Museum. All are within a short walk of each other. Shuttle service is available between the Philadelphia Museum and the Rodin, and the Barnes is a five-minute walk from the Rodin.
The famous Philadelphia Museum covers ten acres and houses work spanning two thousand years. Its impressive holdings include Renaissance, American, Impressionist, and Modern Art.
The Rodin Museum houses a distinguished collection of the sculptor's work, representing every phase of his career. Most of the works are displayed indoors; however, the garden displays eight pieces. This Philadelphia presentation is considered one of the best in the world with over 140 bronzes, marbles, and plasters.
The new Barnes Foundation Museum houses what may be the greatest private collection of Renoir, Matisse, and Cezanne in the world. The recent controversial move from the Barnes home resulted in a beautifully planned space replicating the original housing. A printed guide for each room was contributed by Artist Alice Pritchard Fichter.
Your ticket to the Philadelphia Museum is valid also for the Rodin Museum with no additional charge. Basic pricesare $20.00, $18 for seniors. The ticket for the Barnes Museum is $20.00 (over 65). The ticket for Rodin Museum is $7.00 and is not free with Barnes Museum ticket.
Lunch is available in the Barnes Museum and the Philadelphia Museum.
The coach will let off those who wish to visit the Barnes Museum first and then go on to the Philadelphia Museum.
You may make arrangements for tickets on your own. For further information, call
