    MIS-DROPBy Ferand Peek (2014)

This extremely futuristic 2014 short film, set three hundred years in the future, exploresBenamin P! "ymmonds#, a forensic accountant, $ie%in& of a $ideo stream from amercenary#s drop'pod that has een dama&ed durin& the initial sta&es of a colonial

in$asion! e is left to analyse the file, and consider %hether it %as the ne% recruit#s faultfor the mission#s failure! Ferand Peek#s creati$e and idiosyncratic use of one main camerashot enforces the audience into an intimate relationship %ith the main character* Pri$ate+ason Patrick len!

The short film e&ins %ith this piece of modern technolo&y! -ue to the fact that thistechnolo&y is $oice'controlled, the sound of "ymmonds# $oice is heard as he opens the

    $ideo stream! -espite technicallyein& a non'die&etic sound, the$oice'o$er denotes that"ymmonds is controllin& thecomputer %ith his $oice, &i$in&

connotations of a futuristic andmodern settin&! From this, theaudience can understand that theshort film is set in the future! . likethis sutle method of settin& thetime period and tone, as itcontinues to de$elop the

narrati$e, %hilst suconsciously informin& the audience, makin& them /acti$e# memers!lso, the small photo&raph of Pri$ate len introduces the main character to the audience, allo%in& them to reco&nise this face, and add this ack&round kno%led&e to the remainin&storyline!

This second rather simple frame is the e&innin& of the close'up shot that is technicallyo$er ei&ht minutes and t%enty seconds in len&th! The frame is desi&ned in a %ay thatimplies many processes and esoteric calculations are ein& made, keepin& consistent thetheme of /modern technology#! sthe camera'shot e&ins to focus, the en$ironment around Pri$atelen e&ins to appear* a $erymechanical factory'styled room!.n order to keep the audienceupdated %ith Pri$ate len#s stateand acti$ities, the frame alsosho%s a series of icons on theottom'left, representin& hiscurrent acti$ity! The camera thene&ins to turn around, sho%in&the technicians as they set him up for the mission ahead! This particular /point'of'$ie%#shot pro$ides the audience %ith a certain le$el of in$ol$ement, puttin& them into the odyof Pri$ate len and sho%in& them exactly the same as %hat he can see!

. ha$e to say, %hen . first started to %atch this film, . did not feel completely taken in y itsopenin&, ho%e$er, once the dialo&ue et%een the main characters e&an and . couldunderstand the direction in %hich the narrati$e %as &oin&, . %as rather intri&ued! nethin& that appealed to me %as the fact that %e do not learn much aout "ymmonds, yet%e still are ale to understand his role in relation to Pri$ate len and the other soldiers! This idea of e&innin& %ith a $oice'o$er is somethin& that . am thinkin& of rin&in& to thecreation of my o%n short film, as it is allo%s the audience to ecome in$ol$ed from the

offset! . do feel that this short film has &i$en me the inspiration to create a short film thathas a $ery modern feel runnin& throu&h it! Technolo&y is &oin& to e a key element, .elie$e!
